Dear Jay
Thank you for your postings regarding the Fraterville mine disaster of 1902.
They have been most informative. And your earlier posting of the letter by
the dying miner to his wife was very moving.
Your recent posting and analysis of the identity of P.C. [Peter Carter(?)]
Childress whose memorial is to be found at the Mount Harmony Baptist Church,
Heiskell Station, Knox Co., TN and who died in the 1902 mine disaster has
persuaded me that you have solved the mystery of his lineage - that P.C.
Childress (d. 1902) is the son of William Carter Childress who is buried
near by.
Thank you for your valuable contributions.

Do you know anything about Henry's parents. Where was he from? Parents Name? etc... First place he would show up would be 1900 census, but under who and what state, city, or county.

Henry married again and left OK, perhaps for CA. I don't know his 2nd wife's name. Henry had 6 children: Henry Lee (1917-1985). Newton Junior, Wanda, Tommy, Jimmy, and my grandfather Johnny (b. 1922 Durant, OK). Henry was a WWI veteran and is buried in Sulphur, OK. Any info. will be greatly appreciated!

I am looking for info. on my great-grandparents: Henry Childress (1890-1963) was married at least twice. My g-grandmother was (?) Floy Cameron d. (?) est. 1932 OK. Henry married again and left OK, perhaps for CA. I don't know his 2nd wife's name. Henry had 6 children: Henry Lee (1917-1985). Hi Group
I refer you to a very neat site
<http://www.coalcreekaml.com/cemeteries.htm> It is about a scouting
project that is attempting to find the grave sites of the 194 men who
died in the single deadliest mining accident in the South. The grave
stone of the four members of the P. C. (Peter Carter) Childress family
and his three oldest sons is pictured on the web site. There will be a
100 year reunion next year for descendants of this disaster.
The P(eter) C. Childress who lost his life is listed in the 1900
census of Anderson Co. TN as follows:
Peter C born Sept. 1853 Age 46 married 18 years, Coal Miner
Liza born Aug. 1866 age 34 wife
Wm. L. born Mar 1884 age 16 son
James C. born June 1886 age 13 son
John C. born Aug. 1889 age 11 son
Charlie born Mar 1890 age 10 son
Hattie J. born July 1892 age 7 dau.
Albert born June 1895 age 5 son
Jesse born Dec 1896 age 3 son
Laura E. born Nov 1898 age 1 dau..
There is little doubt in my mind that the family who lost their lives at
Fraterville descend from Robert Childress and wife Kesiah Carter
Childress who are buried at the Mt. Harmony Cemetery on Raccoon Valley
Rd in North Knox Co. TN. The father of Kesiah was named Peter Carter and
she named her first son Peter Carter Childress and the the names Peter
and Carter are found in several following generations of the family.
Robert and Kesiah had four sons Peter Carter of Campbell Co., William
Carter and Elisha who lived in both Knox and Campbell Co. and James
of Knox Co. Two of the sons, William and James, are buried in Mt.
Harmony Cem. Robert and Kesiah's oldest son Peter had a son named
Peter M(adison) who was age 1 in 1850, Elisha had a son Peter L. who was
also 1 yo in 1850, and James had a son Peter Carter who was age 6 in
1860 but he has been accounted for William Carter Childress and
wife Jane have a son age 7 in the 1860 census and is listed as 25 in
the 1880 census which is not a perfect match with the birth date listed
in the 1900 Anderson Census, but does appear to be the strongest
candidate for the head of the family who died with his three children at
Fraterville.
Does anyone have info that would confirm or reject this theory?
.
