"Jesse Coley and his older brother, John Wesley Coley were among the early
settlers of the Pleasant Vally Comunity of Stewart Co.; he was b. May 29
1823, Montgomery Co., NC. They settled in Newton County, Georgia in 1834
and came to Stewart in 1840. Jesse Coley was a carpenter by trade of very
large physical stature and helped Dr. Childress build the Pleasant Valley
Church in 1842. He was licensed to preach in 1845, and among other charges
was Junior preacher at Wesley Chapel and later was sent to preach to the
negroes. He was licensed to exhort after the Civil War and continued until
his death in 1902, He and his wife and several children are buried in
Pleasant
Valley Cemetery.

Oh no I guess when I answered the lost ggg I failed to explain it was
some of the information I bought from e-bay. My clan all evolved from
Robert Childress born in Tennessee abut 1803. Then he moved to Marshall
Co. Alabama and died there. The story was with some group sheets from
Ford Childers. My family always was Childress back as far as I have
researched. I bought a packet of group sheets and was trying to help some
one who posted they had a lost ggg father. I am sorry for the confusion.
Jim
I tried a couple of years ago to contact Ford Childers (Informant Ford
Childers 914 Carsins run Road Aber deen, Md. 21001-1425) to verify his
information and was unable to get a response. I haven't been able to verify
the sources of any of his information.
For the past 3 years Mark and I have been working on sorting out the
Childresses of Amherst County, Virginia and it's parent county of Albemarle
County Virginia and some of the surrounding geography.
When we started collecting and examining 18th Century and early 19th Century
Amherst and Albemarle documents we thought we might be finished with those
Counties in 6 months or so and then move on the other jurisdictions... Six
months was our estimate of when our hired researchers would finish Xeroxing
every extant record with a CHIL prefix. When we started, we thought we
might be looking at 1 Abraham emanating from this cluster of Childresses and
Childers...We were wrong again and again. Now we think there may be 3 or 4
Abraham Childresses and perhaps an additionaly 3 or 4 Abraham "Childers" in
the general area... ie. a total of 6 to 8 Abrahams not 1. Also when we
started looking at Amherst and Albemarle Counties we thought there might be
2 or 3 John's based on the publicized lineages that are seen on the
Internet. Now our latest count is about 9 or 10 John Childresses and
several John Childers in the area and that number may well increase too as
we try to sort out who is who with inadequate records. There are at least 4
Josephs and 4 Henrys.
Some of the ability to differentiate multiple people using the same name
comes from records that show one person illiterate, another literate,
different handwriting of their signatures, different wives, different
estimates of birth dates, creating two records in two different locations at
the same time (being Sheriff in one county and showing up on a census in
another county), court cases that show relationships and where-abouts on
certain dates, and just trying to track each of these people throughout thei
r independent lives. Every record eventually needs to be made consistent
with every other record. What has become apparent to us is that there is a
mass simplification of the records on the Internet.
The conclusion we draw reinforces what others have drawn, that perhaps two
thirds of all genealogical records are just fragmentary shards, ghosts of
ancestors who didn't leave enough records to easily identify themselves as
separate living people. It has made me very skeptical of all the research I
have seen on the Internet that combine these ghosts...conflate...is the
word...into one or two persons instead of the multitude of similarly named
people that created the records. These ghosts of ancestors are not
invisible, (it might be simpler if they were invisible), they leave
fragments, ... these ghosts of people who once lived are out there in
greater numbers than all the identifiable, traceable ancestors combined. If
you think you have 100 Childress ancestors in your data files, I'd wager
that the actual number is closer to 300 individuals with 200 ghosts of
similarly named individuals that you aren't even aware of. Phrased another
way I'm persuaded that up to two thirds off all the records are fragments
belonging to these ghosts which are then combined together by researchers to
make far fewer ancestors. It makes for massive errors.
Gary
I have some Childers in Surry Co. NC in 1791 to mid 1800 with a William
M. Childers born 1832. Need more to try to connect him to you. His
parents were John Childers and Rody (Rhoda?) an dwife #2 Elizabeth
Smith. Siblings Hendon (Hiram Childers 9-14-1812 - George Washington
Childers G b 3-01-1817 - James Franklin Childers b 4-1-1818 - Mehulda
Childers 2-17-1821 - Holbert Childers 3-8-1823 - Delilah Childers
11-28-1825 all listed as born in Surry Co. N.C. moved to Ashe Co. then
to Knox Co Ky.
Informant Ford Childers 914 Carsins run Road Aber deen, Md. 21001-1425 He
says information is from census Wills and marriage bonds. and John
Childers bible.
These are the notes attached---John Childress (the way he spelled it in
Surry Co. NC) where he is said to have been born, had a family in Surry
and many of his childern were born there. His first wife was named Rody
(Rhoda?) no record of maiden name. They went from Surry to Ashe Co. where
he married his second wife in1834. Rody either died in Surry or Ashe
prior to 1834. Elizabeth Smith was in Ashe Co. a widow with children when
they were married. Their youngest son Elias was born in Ashe Co. and the
other 2 children also. They were in Ashe Co until after 1843. A story was
handed down by word of mouth concerning three Childress brothers going to
Tennessee by way of Cades Cove. We believe it was actually John and his 2
sons Holbert by Rody and Zeb Alfred by Elizabeth. John has been found in
Davidson Co. Tn., while Holbert and Alfred went to Knox Co. Ky. at a
later date. Elias settled down in Pulaske Co. Ky. around Cumberland
falls . Holbert married Mary Parry in Ashe Co. after he had been ,married
to Elizabeth Jane Jones in Tn. His half brother Zeb Alfred married Mary's
sister Milly Ann Parry in Ashe Co. Bible records do exist that prove that
John changed the spelling of his sur name to childris after going to Knox
Co. Ky. Rody appears in the Bible record but no maiden name is listed.
Martha married Westly Williams in Knox Co. Ky 10-10-1856. Alfred settled
in Knox as did his father John and Elizabeth. He is in Knox Ky in
1850-1860 census. John died in Knox. Co. 7-7-1859 and left a will naming
on the 3 children by Elizabeth Smith. William M Childers youngest son of
John and Rody is not listed in the family bible records which makes me
wonder if he died at birth or shortly after. Not so!! William M. is 19 in
the 1850 Knox Co Ky census living in the household of John and Elizabeth
along with Alfred, Martha and Eli. Alfred and Milly Ann named their first
son B 12-1856 in N. C. Willliam who M. Polly Taylor. Could he have been
named after his uncle William? This verifies that Alfred and Milly Ann
left Ashe Co. between 12-1856-1860 where they appear on the Knox Co. Ky
census. Since John died 7-7-1859 I believe Alfred was already in Knox.
Do. Also Rody must have died between 1831 and 12-4-1834 ( the date John
married Elizabeth Smith. Another question comes to mind here - was Joseph
Childers born 1790-1800 living in Knox Co in 1840 census related to our
John If so how? Much of our info on John was obtained from the 1820 Perry
Co. Census the 1850-1860 Knox census as well as the John Childers family
Bible . We also received info from cousins Danny Miller, Kelly Childers,
Rosemary Childers Evon along with census records as well as John's will.
Marriage bonds were found in Stokes Co. NC where he married widow of John
Smith Elizabeth.
The notes are stamped with Ford Childers address but no indication as to
whether he wrote this summary. There are 5 group sheets with the stamp of
members of this group.

Subject: {not a subscriber} Laban or Laben in VA
Hello fellow Childress/Childers researchers!
I'm stuck in a rut, please help if you can.
I have a Laban ( Laben?) CHILDRESS born in 1824 in
Franklin Co., VA he married Sarah BOARD on March 17,
1841. I have 3 children, but have no real proof of
parentage, I found a census with a Sarah married to a
Jacob Sink with children with the same names.
The children are
Franklin
Margaret
Joseph
So, now I'm really confused, I need to know who
Franklin's natural father was. Franklin took the name
Childress.
Thanks in advance,
Philisha Riddell

Subject: [MILAM] NEWSPAPER ARTICLE-1884--MASSEY GOES TO ROCKDALE
Nashville, Tennessee DAILY AMERICAN, November 16, 1884.
Hempstead, TX. Nov 13, about half-past o o'clock this morning the north
bound
train on the houston and texas central railroad was wrecked at ClearCreek, a
station about two miles south of this place, as as far as known ten people
were killed outright and fifteen wounded, more or less dangerously. An
investigation by the railway authorities reveals that the diabolical work
was
done by discharged employees and thieves in the vicinity, who sought to
wreck
a freight train for the spoils it contained. Breaking into the section
house,
the wreckers obtained the nevessary tools, and, by pulling spikes and
unfastening the flash plates, arranged a rail to yield to the pressures
without, however, the entire thing was not removed. It so happened that a
passenger train, having the right of way and being behind hand, was the
first
to reach the scene of the disaster. Striking the loosened rail the engine
and
tendar got over safely, while the two baggage cars , mail and express,
and two Pullman sleepers went over the thirty foot embankment into the
creek.
In the baggage car, L. Cardoza. Traveling Passsenger agent of the new york,
texas and mexican railroad was drowned together with E.f. Loris,
