Does anyone know of a William or Bill Childress that lived in California? I
was told that he passed away sometime within the last week. Any info would be
appreciated.
Julia Childress
Dear Listmembers,
I am helping somebody on another list who wanted to know the following
"Does anybody have a record of a Thomas CHILDRESS/CHILDERS born in VA abt
1777 married to a Phebe from MD (as counted in 1850 census for Preble Co.,
OH)
He was the leader of the Stillwater Church in Darke Co., OH, but retired to
where he began the congregation. Audrey is a descendant. I have settled on
CHILDERS as the proper way to spell his name, but I would like to be
sure.... "
Any input is apprreciated
Gary
The Thomas you speak of is one of Childers/Childress that I have been trying
to track down. What do we need to know? No, I don't have his parents. But,
He and my ancestor John bought property together in Miami County, prior to
Thomas moving to Preble County. He also was a circuit baptist minister, early
in that area of Ohio. Got other little tidbits of stuff. Put me in contact,
Gary!!! I think I have information on his wife Phebe too, I believe. During
that time period there were 3 Childers/Childress in that area as early as
1798.(Dayton twn. tax records)
Hi list members,
More Childress/Childers information that I have gleaned from various
sources over the years,
most of which is not directly related to my Childress ancestors, maybe
someone else can use this information. Please double- check any of the
information, that is used for ,verification. The Midkiff/
Childers/Childress connection has been verfied the rest of the
information was found
on the ssi index and various censuses and to my knowledge the ssi and
the census indexes are usually correct with a few exceptions, Happy
hunting

Maybe someone can use this burial locator for Crown Hill Cemetery, in
Indianapolis. Crown Hill by the way is HUGE, and ON THE LIST OF HISTORIC
LANDMARKS . Many famous people are buried here, several Senators, Vice
Presidents, Presidents, Civil war Generals, the poet Riley, and on and on.
(Dillinger is buried here too!)
I've included the Childers and Childress

Several days ago, as part of a much larger posting, the following was
included: "William Childress son of John Childress b 1735 VA d. 1811 TN m
to Elizabeth Armstrong and Nancy Hickman. Is he the William in 1790 Census
Stokes Co NC second house from Mary Childress and John Farmer. Could this be
the William Childress b. 1760/70 in Madison Co. AL mid 1800's to 1830 or
so."
I descend from Judge John Childress (13 Dec 1773-10 Sept 1819), who
married Elizabeth Robertson. I have always understood that he was the son
of John Childress Sr, (c 1735 - 1811) who married (first) Elizabeth
(Armstrong?) and (second) Nancy Ann Hickman. As I interpret the above
query, I assume that they are referring to William Childress, an older
brother of Judge John Childress (1773-1819).
For many years, I understood that Nancy Ann Hickman was my ancestress,
but several years ago I learned that she was born in the 1760s (the earliest
date that I have seen is 1763, the latest, 1767). I don't believe that a
woman born in either year would have been the mother of a son born in 1773!
I have concluded that my line comes through the first wife of John Childress
Sr, Elizabeth (Armstrong?). I have seen claims that she was the daughter of
William Armstrong of Surry/Stokes County, NC, but I have never seen any
documentation of this.
(I am, by the way, descended from an older sister of Nancy Ann Hickman,
Martha "Patsy" Hickman, who married Daniel Hill, in another branch of my
family tree. As I thought that I was doubly descended from this family, I
have studied them in some detail.)
I am interested to learn the basis for the assertion that the maiden name
of John Childress Sr's first wife was Armstrong. I would like to correspond
with the person who posted the above cited query, and with anyone else
having knowledge of or interest in this family. I can be contacted through
this forum, or directly at petehamilton(a)hotmail.com
I have William Childers who married Sally Greenwood in Lincoln County Ky in 1819
and would like to know if there is anyone out there that does lookups in Lincoln
Co. Would there be such a thing as records for this marriage? Desparetly looking
for birth place and father to this(my brick wall) William Childers. Finding
resources in KY. to look through are very hard. Seems like this State hasn't
caught on to the genealogy bug! Guess there are no plans there to do so. HELP!!

Subject: Noah McCord
Surname: McCord, Long
-------------------------
NOAH MCCORD; HANCOCK COUNTY, ILLINOIS
BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW PAGE 655-657
NOAH MCCORD
Noah McCord represents the rich agricultural district of Hancock county,
where he is carrying on general farming and stock-raising. He is a native
son of this county, his natal day being February 8, 1854, a son of John
W. and Nancy (Manifold) McCord, both natives of Tennessee. In their family
are four sons and four daughters, of whom our subject is the seventh in
order of birth.
Noah McCord acquired his education in the Bradshaw district school near
his father's home, and during his boyhood and youth assisted his father
in the operation of the home farm, remaining with his parents until his
marriage, September 27, 1877, at which time Miss Frances Long became his
wife. She is likewise a native of Hancock county, her birth having here
occurred January 6, 1858, a daughter of David and Mildred (Childress) Long,
the former a native of Ohio, and the latter born in Fountain Green township,
this county. Her father accompanied his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Long,
on the removal to Henderson county, this state, in the year 1840, and her
parents were married in this county, thus becoming early settlers of this
portion of the state. The father passed away October 22, 1895, while the
mother survived until October 14, 1896, when she, too, was called to her
final rest, having reached the age of fifty-three years, her birth having
occurred in 1843.
Following his marriage our subject rented a farm in McDonough county, to
which he took his bride, their home being in Hire township. One year latter
he removed to another farm. this being located near La Crosse, and he there
continued his farming operations for six years, subsequent to which time
he removed to La Harpe township, Hancock county, where he operated rented
land during the succeeding six years, and through his industry and economy
at the end of that time he was enabled to invest in property, becoming
possessor, in 1892, of one hundred and sixty acres of land, lying on section
10. This was a partially improved tract but since Mr. McCord has taken
up his adobe here he has made many modern and substantial improvements.
He has added to the original residence so that he now has a modern country
home, and has also erected barns and sheds, has fenced the place with wire
fencing, and has set out a good orchard, from which he gathers good crops
of fruit in season. In 1902 he added to his original holdings by the
purchase
of an eighty-acre tract lying on section 9, and in 1905 added a second
eighty-acre tract but in the spring of the present year- he disposed of
eighty acres, so that he now has two hundred and forty acres, and his is
one of the finely improved and productive Tracts of
this section of the state. In addition to his agricultural pursuits he
also engages in the raising of cattle, horses and hogs, and this branch
of his business is proving a profitable source of revenue
In the family of Mr. and Mrs. McCord have been born four children, of whom
two died in infancy. Those who survive are: Mabel, born January 1, I882,
the wife of Roy E. Hancock, engaged in the dray business at La Harpe; and
Cleola May, born January-29, 1887, and now the wife of Clarence Ketchum,
of La Harpe. The deceased are. Ardie Clark, who was born July 18. 1878,
and died June 29. 1880; and Atley Clyde, who was born March 17, 1896 and
died October 24, 1898.
Mr. McCord's study of the political questions of the day has led him to
give his support to the Democratic party. He held the office of school
director for nine years but aside from this he has never been active in
public affairs Fraternally he is identified with the Independent Order
of Odd Fellows belonging to lodge No. 653, at La Harpe His integrity and
energy have been salient characteristics in his business life and he enjoys
the full confidence of all he comes in contact with.
Can anyone recomend a site that offers free web space? I need as many meg as
possible. I'm going to update my web site and need a new provider (more
reliable)

Subject: Re: Thomas M. Patton b. 1769, MA, son of Thomas and Anna Patton
Joan,
First time I've seen a Thomas R. Patten anywhere. Especially interested as
the spelling of Thomas R.'s name is the only one in the bunch changed to an
EN. Any more information at all on either Thomas R or Matilda M. Childers?
For those of you who've seen this post too many times, I apologize. My GGGG
grandmother, Dicey ---- Harris, went a bit nuts towards the end of her life
and required a guardian -- George W. Brown. Dicey Harris had m. Robert
Harris who d 1816. They lived in Surry co NC. George W. Brown took a trip to
Providence LA to bring back $1000 from Thomas R. Patten ca 1846. I have a
possible connection to CHILDERS. This Harris family came from VA (Bedford co
and surrounding areas) but they were connected to an exploring lot and moved
around a bit.
Dicey's first daughter, Frances "Patsy" Harris m. Hastin Martin (or Martin)
CHILDRESS. He signed her father's will 1816. Frances Harris CHILDRESS may
have m (2) Reece Davis. She did eventually marry James GRAVES and moved to
Alabama.
I hope to hear from you!

Handbook of Texas website.
CHILDRESS, GEORGE CAMPBELL(1804-1841).George Campbell
Childress, lawyer, statesman, and author of the Texas Declaration
of Independence,qv son of John
Campbell and
Elizabeth(Robertson)Childress,was born on January 8, 1804, at
Nashville,Tennessee.
In 1826 he graduated from Davidson Academy (later the
University of Nashville). He was admitted to the Tennessee bar in
1828 and married Margaret Vance on June 12 of that year. Their son was
born in March 1835,and Margaret Childress died a few months later.
Childress
practiced law and for a brief period (September 1834-November 1835)
edited the Nashville Banner and Nashville Advertiser. In December
1834 he made his first trip to Texas, where his uncle, Sterling C.
Robertson,qv was organizing Robertson's colony.qqv
After spending some time raising money and volunteers in Tennessee
for the Texas army,Childress left permanently for Texas. He arrived at
the Red River on December 13, 1835, and reached Robertson's colonyqv on
Jan 9,1836. The following February he and his uncle were elected to
> represent Milam Municipality at the Convention of 1836.qv Childress
called the convention to order and subsequently introduced a
resolution authorizing a committee of five members to draft a
declaration of
independence. Upon adoption of the resolution, he was named chairman of
the committee and is almost universally acknowledged as the primary
author of the document.
On March 19 President David G. Burnetqv sent Robert Hamiltonqv
and Childress, whose family was on
friendly terms with President
Andrew Jackson, to Washington as
diplomatic agents for the Republic of
Texas.qv They were instructed to negotiate for recognition of the
republic. In
late May 1836 their mission was terminated when they were replaced by
James Collinsworth and Peter W. Grayson.qqv On December 12, 1836,
Childress married Rebecca Stuart Read Jennings;they had two
daughters.Childress returned to Texas three times-in 1837,1839,and
1841-to open law offices, first in Houston, then Galveston.
Each time he was unsuccessful in establishing a practice that would
support his family. On October 6, 1841, while living in Galveston, he
slashed his abdomen with a Bowie knife and died soon thereafter. On
August 21, 1876, Childress County was formed and named in his honor.
