Hello. I have a stupid question for you. For some reason I got the email you
were to send to someone else. My name is Melissa Childers. I was wondering
if you knew how the Childers and Childress were related. I don't talk to my
real father who's last name is Childers. So I really don't know much about
my family background. I met my grandfather William Ray Childers about 5
years before he died. He really didn't tell me much about his background
either. I know there were 13 kids in the family and I think he was somewhere
in the middle. He was in WW11. I think he said he was from Kentucky or
Virginia. He was married a couple ofe times. I don't know what my grandmas
maiden name was but her first name was Verena. She lives in Cherokee IA. I
am sure that is where they were living before they got divorced and he went
to the army. My father Lester Erwin Childers was born May 26 1941. I don't
know if you have any information on the Childers or not but if you do know
something or find out something could you please let me know?? I really want
to learn about my background but I just don't know where to start. I guess
any information you can give me would be a great help. Thank you for taking
the time to read this. I appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Melissa Childers

Thanks Greg,
I
A while back, you sent me information on a couple of Thomas Childresses and I have been re-reading it.
1) Thomas died 1774......."Pitts Co. Inventories and Accounts 1770-1797 by Payne, AC 1, p. 21; Inventory of estate of Thomas Childres decd. 20 Aug 1774"
2) Thomas alive 1787.....Order book Pitts Co. 1767-1800 vol. 1 "Nov. 1787, Thos Childress, Order to Record inventory.
So there seems to be a Thomas Sr. and Thomas Jr. I guess-timate that Thomas Sr. was born between 1700-1720 and that Thomas Jr. was born ca. 1740's
Your information shows that there is a Moses Childress in an unspecified court action in 1783 and 1786. (Order Book, Pitts Co. 1767-1800 Vol. 1). I am speculating that these are money motivated lawsuits i.e. something to do with business activity and that Moses is a mature adult businessman. I guess-timate his birth ca. 1740.
Richard Childrus is married to the daughter of James McMurdy and therefore one might presume Richard Childrus is a generation younger than his father-in-law James McMurdy. James McMurdy dies in 1794. If James McMurdy were in his 70's at the time of death, James McMurdy would have been born in the 1720's and therefore his son-in-law, Richard Childress might have been born ca. the 1740's.
I notice also that there are striations, similarity in dates, of several other of the Pitts. Co. Childress.... for example... you show that 3 male Childress get married between 1789 and 1799. (Marriages of Pitts co. 1767-1805; Joshua Childress and Frankey Crane on 2 Dec 1795; Robert Childress and Polley Turley in 1799; and William Childress and Rebecca Ford 19 Jan 1789) It just is suggestive that they are of the same generation if not also of the same family. I guess-timate that they were born between about 1770-1780.
So laying out these 3 generations I show the time line pattern this way.
Thomas Sr. born ca. 1700-1720
Thomas Jr., Moses and Richard born ca. 1740's
Joshua, Robert, and William born ca. 1770-1780's.
If you take into account a 1745 ship crossing, then Thomas Sr. was born overseas and was an original adult immigrant.
Let me know if you find anything on the location of the James McMurdy plantation.

I do not know right of the top of my head but I will look.
I noticed on the Childress GenForum that someone was looking for his
ancestors which included the Rev. War vet Robert Childress of Franklin
County Va. It lists that he was born in Amelia in 1756 ..... and the same
information that is on the gravemarker of the Kanawha Co. Robert Childress.
I am not sure how Rev. Hannah got confused over this Robert but I do not
think he had his information straight. Esp. when looking into the wife,
parents and children of the Rev. Robert Childress.
I think the Pitts. Co. Robert is a good bet. I think Richard
Childrus/Childress father was Robert Childress. I think Richard also had a
brother named Robert Childress.
I also noticed on the Turley list that the Turleys who migrated from Pitts.
Co. ended up settling in Kanawha Co. and some in Cabell Co.

Does anybody have information on the location of the property that Benjamin Childress donated to a church in Albemarle County, VA in the early 1800's? I think it may be a Methodist Church around Esmont City, Albemarle County, VA.

Gary, thanks for the information on the Robert Childress of Lunenburg. I
have been sent information that shows Richard Chidress as the father of the
Robert Childress of Pittsylvania County who married Polly Turley in 1799.
Also, it shows Richards father as Robert Childress. I have yet to verify.
Greg
Greg,
There is a "Robert Childres" of Lunenburg County in 1750 filing a deed (in the Univ of Virginia Digital Archives..... http://198.17.62.51/cgi-bin/drawer/disk19/CC150/0368/C0291?8) Both Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties were originally part of Lunenburg. The description of property on the "headbranches of the little Roanoak" may put this land deed of Robert "Childres" in the present Pittsylvania area. The 1750 date is too early to be your Robert of Kanawha. But now it makes 3 possible Childresses in the Pittsylvania..... Robert in 1750, a John joining the militia in 1763, and Major filing a deed in 1781.
Gary

Hi Greg,
We had Robert of Amelia County, VA penciled (nearly inked) in as a more probable Childers (we have looked at Robert's Rev. Pension record too). We have yet to find any other supporting evidence of Childress links to Amelia County, VA though we revisit these issues often.
I had presumed from the outset, that anyone paying to put up the headstone of Robert in Kanawha County, WVA earlier this century had had some research done and so the headstone was just a recitation of existing material.... i.e.. the Pension record that you now site. I agree with your conclusions but there will be Hell to pay to ever get that headstone undone and the longer that headstone is up the more it is apt to be enshrined. It may be that the dates on the tombstone are off too. Robert might be an infant for all we know. Which also opens up the possibility that Robert might be the obvious Robert of Amherst, VA listed in the 1790 Census.
I have been looking at some Childress/Childers who are in the militia early enough to be in the French and Indian wars of the 1750's and 1760's. There is a John Childers/Childress in the VA militia (which heavily recruited Scots) joining from Halifax County VA which shares a common boundary with Pittsylvania (Pittsylvania County was formed out of Halifax) and there also appears to be some Childresses living on the boarder of Pittsylvania and Halifax. We can't account for this "John" militiaman. We have too many Johns already. But if your Kanawha brood is migrating from Pittsylvania, this Indian War John is the earliest candidate we can find being in the Pittsylvania County, VA neck of the woods.

Hi Gary,
I visited the Library of Virginia a couple of weeks ago and did a little research. I did find one item of note.
I looked up the revolutionary war pensions. There was one for Robert Childress/Childers. It stated that there was only one Robert Childress/Childers listed for the revolutionary war from Virginia and he applied for pension from Franklin County Virginia in 1834 at age 78. It stated that he was the son of John Childress of Amelia. It also had that he was in the battle of Guilford Courthouse.
Basically, he has the same information that is on the gravemarker of Robert Childress of Kanawha. The only exception from the work of Hannah was his parents.
I believe the work of Hannah has no credibility and I do not beleive the Robert Childress of Kanawha was in the Revolutionary war.
At least it cleared it up in my mind.
Thanks,
Greg Whitlock
