Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Does anyone know if there is a connection between Goolsby CHILDERS, c1803
VA-1872 Carter Co., KY who m. Nancy MCCLANAHAN, b c1814 VA (they were
listed in the 1870 Carter Co., KY census) and Goolsby/Goolsbury
CHILDERS/CHILDRESS (1757 Amherst, VA-25 May 1842) Garrard Co., KY & m. Nancy
SWEENEY?
The name Goolsby came from the maiden name of Goolsby CHILDERS/CHILDRESS'
(1757-1842) mother Susanna GOOLSBY.
Info on Goolsby CHILDERS & Nancy MCCLANAHAN has been printed in the last 2
issues of the Childers-Childress Clearinghouse Newsletter. I wrote to the
submitter of the info, but she does not know the connection between the two
Goolsby's, if any.
The info in the newsletter states Nancy McClanahan Childers died 1890 in
Boyd Co. Infirmary (listed as a pauper).
Does anyone know if there is a connection between these 2 Goolsby's? The
name Nancy McClanahan sounds very familiar to me but I have nothing on her
or her husband in my database.

Does anyone have access to the 1880 Patrick Co Census? I know Betty Pilson
has been working on it getting it ready to print, but don't think it is out
yet.
I need a lookup for Robert Childress, wife Massey Boyd, on this census.
Online it is hard to read and I am unable to tell if he was born in NC or SC.

Childress Surname for the Rootsweb Mail List
Hello All,
This is my first submission to this listserver. My mother is a Childress.
Her father's name was Dillard which I figure is fairly unique. His
particulars are:
Born: Feb 16, 1901, Elizabeth, VA
Died: July 1976, Baltimore, MD
Married: Lily Lowman, Jan 19, 1920, Winston-Salem, NC
SSN: 214-18-9531
Parents: Foster Childress, Emma Harold
If anyone has anything to add, I would be very grateful. I have
information on my mother's family on down and a bit on the Lowman side but
nothing before Dillard besides the parents' names. I am running Family Tree
Maker 6.0 so if any of you can utilize that format just let me know the
process for exporting the relevant data and I'll e-mail it to you.
I've also got the SSN Death Index and am willing to look up names if anyone
wishes that for trade. <For all I know people that are into this consider
that is like offering nothing but I'm offering it nonetheless. :-) >
Thanks,
Don

MITCHELL and JOHN CHILDRESS (Revolutionary War veterans who
both died in Knox Co, TN) are thought to be brothers, and
the "question of the century" for their descendants is:
WHO WAS THEIR FATHER?
Mitchell (1750-1844) moved from Virginia to Burke and then
Wilkes County, NC before the Revolutionary War and served
in the North Carolina Militia. Mitchell stated in his
pension application he was born in Henrico CO but moved to
AMHERST CO, VA as a child. His first wife was Hannah
Webb, daughter of John Webb who was a neighbor of the
Childress clan in Amherst Co, VA, per deed records. John
Webb and his sons also followed Mitchell Childress, Sr. to
Wilkes Co, NC. (Hannah Childress is mentioned in the Will
of her father, John Webb, in Wilkes Co, NC records.)
John Childress (1759-1849) stated in his pension
application he was born in Albermarle but his parents moved
to AMHERST CO, VA soon after his birth and he grew to
manhood to manhood in AMHERST CO, VA. John lived in
AMHERST COUNTY, VA during the Revolutionary War, and in
1785 or 1786 he moved to Burke Co, NC (for one year) and
then to Wilkes Co, NC. John's first wife was daughter of
James Edmundson/Edmonston who was a neighbor of the
Childress clan in AMHERST CO, VA. James
Edmundson/Edmonston also moved to Wilkes Co, NC and was
neighbor of John Childress at the time of the 1787 Wilkes
Co, NC Tax List. (John Childress was named as son-in-law
of James Edmondson/Edmonston in James' Will dated 1793 in
Wilkes Co, NC.)
The AMHERST CO, VA census/tax lists of 1783 and 1785 may
provide helpful CLUES as to father/relatives of Mitchell
and John Childress. The 1783 AMHERST CO, VA TAX LIST
shows James Edmonston living next to Robert Childress,
Goolsbey Childress, and JOHN Childress, as well as George
Taylor (brother-in-law of John Childress) and John Duncan
(brother-in-law of John Childress.) Joseph Childress was
also in Amherst Co, VA in 1783. Peter Carter lived in
the area of the Childress clan in 1783. A Thomas Lucas
also lived in this neighborhood, and John Childress' son,
Robert, married (1) Polly Lucas and (2) Keziah Carter
(daughter of Peter Carter.)
The 1785 AMHERST CO, VA TAX LIST shows James
Edmondson/Edmonston living next to TWO John Childresses,
and George Taylor (brother-in-law of John Childress) and
not too far from John Duncan (brother-in-law of John
Childress.) Goolsby Childress, Henry Childress, and
another John Childress (specified as living on the Pedlar
River) were also in Amherst Co, VA in 1785. In 1785,
Peter Carter lived very near John Duncan who married
sister of John Childress' first wife.
Virginia (Childers) Hanks has proved her lineage from Henry
Childers who married Susanna Goolsby and moved to Kentucky
in the 1790s. In 1783 in Amherst Co, VA, Henry's son,
Robert, married Nancy Pryor, daughter of Nicholas Pryor who
was neighbor to the Childresses who lived in the Pedlar
River area of Amherst Co.
By ruling out this Henry , we have left in AMHERST COUNTY,
VA from the 1785 Tax List:
1. John Childress who married (1) Edmondson/Edmonston
and (2) Elizabeth Lindsay
2. T W O unidentified John Childresses (one John
Childress lived next door to another John Childress and one
is recorded as living in the Pedlar River area.)
3. Goolsby Childress
WHAT, IF ANYTHING, does this tell us about the father of
Mitchell Childress, Sr. (1750-1844) and John Childress
(1759-1849)????
Ann B. Chambless

I have Frankie Childress b. in Amherst Co. VA ca. 1800 and md. James Kidd in
Knox Co. TN in 1819. Her father may have been William, b. in Amherst Co. in
1791. I would really like to identify her family.

This is a posting on the Childress Genforum, but I wanted to save this
document in the Rootsweb Archives also. It is such an interesting
genealogical document. It mentions Laurens Co. S.C., and Lumpkin
County, GA and Monroe Co. TN and "Lem" Childress (Lemuel) which may be
traceable clues. It gives such details about the brothers and sisters
that it may eventually connect to somebody....

Dear Childress list members,
Here is another posting that describes how to solve the Happy99 worm
(sometimes referred to a virus) that is being discussed at Rootsweb.
Gary Childress
list owner
I decided to check the Symantec Anti
Virus Encyclopedia to find out what exactly this thing is. Here goes,
together with full instructions on how to remove it.
----------
Happy99.Worm
VirusName: Happy99.Worm
Aliases: Trojan.Happy99, I-Worm.Happy
Likelihood: Common
Region Reported: US, Europe
Characteristics: Trojan Horse, Worm
Description:
This is a worm program, NOT a virus. This program has reportedly been
received through email spamming and USENET newsgroup posting. The file
is usually named HAPPY99.EXE in the email or article attachment.
When being executed, the program also opens a window entitled "Happy
New Year 1999 !!" showing a firework display to disguise its other
actions. The program copies itself as SKA.EXE and extracts a DLL that
it carries as SKA.DLL into WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. It also modifies
WSOCK32.DLL in WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and copies the original
WSOCK32.DLL into WSOCK32.SKA.
WSOCK32.DLL handles internet-connectivity in Windows 95 and 98. The
modification to WSOCK32.DLL allows the worm routine to be triggered
when a connect or send activity is detected. When such online activity
occurs, the modified code loads the worm's SKA.DLL. This SKA.DLL
creates a new email or a new article with UUENCODED HAPPY99.EXE
inserted into the email or article. It then sends this email or posts
this article.
If WSOCK32.DLL is in use when the worm tries to modify it (i.e. a user
is online), the worm adds a registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce=SKA.EXE
The registry entry loads the worm the next time Windows start.
Removing the worm manually:
delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.EXE
delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.DLL
in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory, rename WSOCK32.DLL to WSOCK32.BAK
in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory, rename WSOCK32.SKA to WSOCK32.DLL
delete the downloaded file, usually named HAPPY99.EXE
Windows prevents you to do step #3 and #4 above if the machine is
still connected to the Internet. The file "windows\system\wsock32.dll"
is used whenever the machine is connected to Internet (i.e. through
dial-up or LAN connection).
If you are using dial-up connection (i.e. America Online), you need to
do the following:
terminate internet connection
delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.EXE
delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.DLL
in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory, rename WSOCK32.DLL to WSOCK32.BAK
in WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory, rename WSOCK32.SKA to WSOCK32.DLL
delete the downloaded file, usually named HAPPY99.EXE
If you are connected to Internet through LAN (i.e. in the office or
cable modem), you need to do the following:
>From the Start menu, select shutdown-restart in MS DOS mode
type CD \windows\system when DOS prompt (C:\)appears
type RENAME WSOCK32.DLL WSOCK32.BAK
type RENAME WSOCK32.SKA WSOCK32.DLL
type DEL SKA.EXE
type DEL SKA.DLL
Safe Computing:
This worm and other trojan-horse type programs demonstrate the need to
practice safe computing. One should not execute any executable-file
attachment (EXE, SHS, MS Word or MS Excel file) that comes from an
email or a newsgroup article from an untrusted source.
Norton AntiVirus users can protect themselves from this virus by
downloading the current virus definitions either through LiveUpdate or
from the following webpage:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html

Hello Childress subscribers,
I am posting this from another list. The Rootsweb people have been
discussing a virus that is out and about. The posting below summarizes
the problem.
Thanks
Gary Childress
list owner
"Hi Folks, this is THE most annoying Virus. You won't get it from
rootsweb
since it is passed via Attachments, and you can't post one of them to
rootsweb maillists.
What happens is someone, often a friend, sends you email with an
attachment named HAPPY99.exe. DO NOT OPEN IT. Delete it and
email the person back telling them they are infected. If you open it
you are infected and you start sending it to all your friends. I have
gotten it sent to me several times. I also don't tend to open
attachments
sent by anyone to me anymore unless I requested it or know what it
is. I got enough dirty pictures, thanks!
If you are infected, here is how to disinfect yourself:
1. delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.EXE
2. delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.DLL
3. delete WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WSOCK32.DLL
4. rename WSOCK32.SKA to WSOCK32.DLL
5. delete the downloaded file, usually named HAPPY99.EXE
Print this out (and lose it) so you can fix yourself.

The ARCHIVES for this ROOTSWEB CHILDRESS Mail List to which you and
everyone reading this message is already subscribed is at:

[type in the name Childress (in the first search engine) to find this
Childress list archives, then you can refine your search by typing a
more specific name in the second search engine that will display. This is
the archive for previous postings on this Rootsweb Childress Mail List to
which you now subscribe] At the above Rootsweb archive, you can also
search the archives of most other Rootsweb mail lists there too, without
having to subscribe to those other mail lists. (it is sometimes easiest
to occasionally search the archives rather than maintain a constant
subscription to a certain mail list)
There are some commercial sites. "Ancestry" is one site that has both
some free information (you can wander around that site and pick up a lot
of useful information free) (they have some GEDCOM files.... ancestral
lineages.... pedigrees for some people) and more information if you
subscribe for about $7 per month. I subscribed to Ancestry for about 6
months and recommend it. I will re-subscribe to them again later. I
retrieved, for the time being, all I wanted of what they had on the area
I was researching.
Go to http://www.ancestry.com/
FYI, this Rootsweb Childress mail list has been in operation about 9
weeks. We are up to about 150 subscribers. New people every day. I
estimate that about 50-75 are hard core "who's who" Childress researchers
and you will find their names at every Childress site that allows
postings of e-mail addresses. Another 50-75 persons on this list are
complete "newbies" to genealogy research but those "newbies" most likely
carry the Childress surname and are computer literate (I solicited a lot
of Childress kin in colleges across America). This mail list will also
have a turnover rate, people coming and going, so there will be a
cyclical theme to this site, postings will get repeated, postings will
get amended.
I hope that this Rootsweb Childress Mail List, to which you now
subscribe, is the principal or will be the principal site where new
information is developed, where original research is undertaken and
original documents are gathered. There are a lot of errors on the
internet genealogy forums. You can spend a lot of time just trying to
separate flawed from valid information. Ultimately your ability to track
your families genealogy will be based on the standards you choose for
accuracy (Gedcom files compiled by others about your ancestors, if you
can find any, are always suspect as to their accuracy). More reference
books are being made available to genealogists...on-line... because of
the computer age.... so modern researchers are apt to make better use of
their time than previous researchers. However, there is no way you can
research without going to a library. There are just too many esoteric,
detailed records preserved in libraries. The LDS (Latter Day Saints) is
the king of the hill for libraries and they have branches around the US.
For more information on their "Family History Centers FHC" go to
http://www.lds.org/Main.html They will be making some more of their
material available on line, (Beta testing this month or next month) so
they are important to watch.
FYI, the Childress surname includes original immigrants in 1745. (We
have found some Childress families in Scotland that trace back to the
early 1600's before they disappear). The Childress surname includes some
Childress families who started out as Childers, but somehow switched
along the way. The Childress surname includes ex-slaves who adopted the
name. The Childress surname includes Childresses who are none of the
above but may have immigrated to the US in unknown circumstances at
unknown times.
I and my brother Mark are researching the 1745 crossing and whatever we
can find out about the Childresses prior to 1800, whether or not they are
part of our direct line. We have hired people to collect copies of
original documents in a few targeted counties for narrow date ranges. It
has been estimated that only about one third of all ancestors left
documents useful to genealogists tracking their ancestors. We hope
however that by weaving together several family branches, when one branch
gaps, we can still follow another line until we are back on course...i.e.
that collectively, together, the Childress families can trace threads
that aren't otherwise apparent for any single family.
Ultimately, you will become "the expert" in your family. There are some
choke points, certain States and Counties where a number of researchers
seem to get focussed, and where a number of families diverge. The
Childresses of the 1745 crossing trace back to Virginia. They migrated
out of Virginia on trails common to a lot of immigrants, some into the
Carolinas, some to WVA, some to TN, some to GA, MS, and AL then all
points west. The people on this Childress Mail List have some of that
information. I encourage all to post whatever they have. Lets look at
the fragments. Better yet, by posting, you create an archive on your
family line in the Rootsweb computers that we and future genealogists can
search as the need arises, even if no one currently makes the connection.
At some point, you should start collecting copies of original documents
from Courthouse archives, or government archives. There is vast virgin
territory to be researched on the Childress families. The internet is
useful to find out what has been done to date and what resources are
readily available. But if new ground is to be broken, it will require
new information. That new information, if it exists, exists as original
research looking for copies of original documents in libraries and
archives and examining all information on those documents, not just the
"abstracted" headlines that get published in journals, though that is
useful too. How accurately you trace your ancestors, or even if they are
to be traceable, depends at some point on some old fashion Sherlockian
research....small clues only you "the expert" in your family recognize as
critical information.
I estimate that in the year 1900 there were less than a 1000 (perhaps as
few as 600-700) Childress families in the US. Today there are an
estimated 10,000 Childress families (heads of household). If I were to
contact all Childress families in the US today, only about 10% would be
interested enough in their genealogy to join this Childress Mail List.
With 150 people on this list, the probability of finding your father who
abandoned you at birth is very remote. But if any Childress researcher
can get back before 1900, then some of our lines may start to overlap.
It is important when you describe ancestors to realize that others may
have slightly different information on those people and don't recognize
your description. The location, location, location where your ancestor
lived is always very useful as an identifier. So if you know your
earliest ancestor came from Knox County, TN , or Laurens, SC etc. around
a certain date, it alerts another researcher to look into his files and
check. All the first names, though necessary, tend to blur together, but
LOCATIONS of the EARLIEST known ancestor always seem to jump out as
identifiers.
You ask "Is there an online web page of Childress family linkages?"
Well, there isn't an "official" web page. Some on this list have Web
pages that link to things Childress and Childers and I encouraged anyone
to post such Web page addresses. The subscribers on this list are pretty
much the "brain trust". It is, after all, the researchers, especially,
those researchers who are doing their own original research, that is the
source of Childress information. Those researchers are principally here
on this list, from what I can see. This Rootsweb Childress Mail List may
not be a Web Page but the people on the list are sure the stickiest
fingered Childress and Childers researchers you will find in one spot.
They steal everything not nailed down. Pack Rats R US. If anyone would
like to put their Web Page on "Cyndi's List"
<http://www.cyndislist.com/> as the "official" or principal source, or
one of several official/principally Childress web pages (whatever
criteria Cyndi has for that), they make it pretty easy and you have my
permission to link to this Rootsweb Mail List.
Lastly, you can't research the Childress surname without researching
Childers surnames and other surnames. It is very, very useful to check
out Childers sites. The surnames of the two families are joined at the
hips because of the confusing spellings. Some of you best information
will come from people who are tracing ancestors who married into the
Childress line. You'll need the input of a lot of people, mail lists,
and genforums with a lot of surnames to do your "Childress" research.

Hi! I'm new to the list (thanks for finding me Gary! That's one
piece of unsolicited e-mail I was happy to receive :-) My mom's the
genealogist in the family, but she doesn't have an e-mail
address/computer, so I'm it.
I've got a couple of newbie questions:
* Software? (preferably X-platform Mac/PC)
* Are there GEDCOM files for the Childress family tree
* Is there an online web page of childress family linkages
Like I said, I don't know much about our genealogy, but my branch of
the tree's been rooted in Central Illinois for the past 4 generations
-- in fact, my great-grandmother is alive and still living by herself
in the country at age 93 (Hazel Childress, married to Elden(sp?)
Childress d. 1981) Mom's got a lot of stuff written down, and I know
if I got her a computer & software, she'd go nuts.
TIA,
Matt
