Dear Linda,
I don't know much about the CHILDRESS line except I have a Nancy Childress
that married George W. Harris in Charlotte CO, VA, July 10, 1841. She was
the daughter of Jack. They had children: John W., Elizabeth, Mary D., Nancy
S., Joseph Thomas, Doctor, Isaac, Zephaniah, and Dolly. George and Nancy
were known to live in Appomattox CO, Bent Creek area. Amherst CO, is just
across the river.
Rebecca Ann Harris the sister to George W. Harris married Lafayette
Childress July 10, 1841 in Charlotte CO, VA , he was the son of William and
Sally Childress. Lafayette was a miller and his second wife was Mary.
Residences were Oakville, Appomattox CO and Rustburg, Campbell CO.
Sarah Harris the sister to George W and Rebecca married Robert H. Childress,
May, 27, 1841, Charlotte CO, VA. Robert was a carpenter.
I suppose my question is did your Thomas Childress have any sons? I have
additional information on these lines if any of this connects to your Thomas
Childress.
Thanks,
Deborah Harris Droog in VA

Below are 2 observations about John Childress born 1755.
1) He was born in Cumberland County, moved to Surry County, NC and enlisted in the REV WAR in Surry in 1780 before living for 18 years or more in Laurens County, SC. He mentions in his pension statement that he took prisoners during the REV WAR and traveled past the "Widow Carmichaels place". I speculate that John may have mentioned the Widow Carmichael because the Childresses personally knew the family since there is a John Carmichael (1774-1861) who marries an Elizabeth Childress after the Rev War. Also there are some Carmichael families living in Caswell County, NC and Wilkes County NC which are in proximity to Surry County, NC which are areas in which some Childress families are living.
2) There is also a Joseph Childress from Cumberland County (the birth county of John b. 1755). Joseph was b. ca. 1730 died ?? and his later movements are unknown to me. Both Joseph and the father of John b. 1755 are in the Virginia militia from Cumberland County. I am going on the assumption that this Joseph b. ca. 1730 may have been related to the father of John b. 1755.
Question: Has anybody seen a Joseph Childress in Surry County, NC or Wilkes County, NC, or Laurens County, SC or Rutherford County, TN... the various counties that John b. 1755 moved through?
Also below is information on the Carmichael family,
First Generation
Children of Duncan Carmichael (born in Lismore, Argyle, Scotland) and unknown Ensley
Second Generation (in North Carolina)
Duncan Carmichael (1755-1834) m. Charity Witt (c1774-bef 1820),
Third Generation
Children of Duncan Carmichael and Charity Witt
John Carmichael (1774-1861) m. Elizabeth Childress
Sarah Carmichael (1778-?) m. John Smithey
Leminah Carmichael (c1779-?) m. Thomas Climer
William Carmichael (1780-1846,GA) m. Sallie Smith
Lemuel Carmichael (c1784-?, TN) m. Suzy Carmichael
Mary Carmichael (c1785-?) m. Vench Ingram
Barzillai/Byerly Graves Carmichael (c1792-c1872) m. 1) Mary (Polly) Westmoreland (1789-1859),
2) Mary (1840-?)
Solomon Carmichael (1794-1883) m. Sarah Grubbs (1797-1841),
d/o Thomas and Martha (Patsy) Grubbs
Richard Carmichael (1796-1850) m. Sarah Westmoreland
Duncan Carmichael enlisted in the Revolutionary War while residing in Caswell County, NC. He served in the Company of Capt. Tillman Dixon as a blacksmith. In 1821 Duncan was living with his daughter, Mary Wilson and stated his "other children have long since left me." Statements taken from Lawrence and John Angel, indicate Duncan's brother, Joseph Carmichael, also served in the Rev. War.

Hi Jay,
Thanks for your question about Fleming Childress. This is what I know,
(1) William Childress (1755-1831), left a Will in Knox Co., TN naming a son Fleming (among others);
(2) there is a Fleming Childress in Caswell, NC as of 1820;
(3) and now, a Fleming Childress (or Childers) is noted as a Preacher South Central Kentucky "Peters Creek", the Baptist congregation in Barren County, Kentucky, was formed in 1830 with Fleming C Childress/Childers, the first pastor.
(4) I have never encountered any surname of "Fleming" nor any marriages of a Childress to a Fleming surname.
(5) Also, Fleming is not Flemon which is a name seen descending in the Childers lineages.
As far as I know, the information is just not yet discovered to know what connections, if any, exist between these individuals. I'll keep you posted if we stumble upon something.
Mark Childress
Hi Jay,
Brother Mark is my expert on Fleming..... I'll get him to post what he knows for the record. Fleming is such an unusual name, that Sara's posting caught my eye too. I haven't had a chance to ask Mark if he thinks this is the same Fleming we see linked to the Knox County Childresses and elsewhere. Fleming moves around a bit... and his movements are suggestive of other counties in which relatives might be found.... which is why tracking him might yield some clues.
The Childresses of Knox County, TN dedicated some land they owned in Knox County to a preaching station where Methodist and Baptist preachers could gather on Sunday and sermonize.

Hi Gary
I seem to recall that John, 1759, had a brother William that married a Fleming from Anderson Co Tennessee. If I am
correct, did they not have a child whom they named, Fleming. Could there be a connection to this pastor Fleming Childress or
have I not remembered correctly?

Sorry, folks,
When I changed the subject line, I also obliterated what denomination the
church was. It was a Baptist congregation in Barren County, Kentucky.

I could not pass this up without sharing with my kin and fellow researchers.
from TUPELO by REV. JOHN H. AUGHEY, A.M.,
This is the account of what happened to I believe was
P . F. CHILDRESS of the 26th inf. 1st co. i , Tenn. CSA
About 3 o'clock in the afternoon, I approached two prisoners who were heavily
ironed. They were handcuffed, had bands and chains upon their ankles, similar
to mine, and were also chained together and to a bolt in the floor. I
inquired for what offence they were incarcerated. The prisoner whom I
addressed was a tall gentleman with a very intellectual expression of
countenance and of prepossessing manners. He was pale and sad.
Page 176
"We are charged with desertion."
"Did you desert?"
"I enlisted in the Confederate service for twelve months. At the expiration
of my term of service I asked permission to return home, stating that I had
learned from a trustworthy source that my family were suffering from a lack
of the necessaries of life; that they lived in Tennessee, which is occupied
by Federal troops. Confederate money there has no purchasing power, not being
worth the paper on which it is printed; that I desired to relieve my family
from their distress, and as my term of service had expired, I demanded my
discharge. This they refused, stating that the Confederate congress had
passed a law requiring all soldiers who had enlisted for any term, however
short, to be held to service during the war, and that all who left before its
close would be considered guilty of desertion, and if arrested would be shot.
Regarding the law as a tyrannical enactment, and of no binding force, I
attempted to return to my family, but was arrested and committed to this
prison."
"What will be your fate?"
"I don't know, but fear the worst. At our trial Gen. Bragg said some salutary
examples must be made to deter soldiers from deserting, or the army would
waste away as snow before the bright beams of the vernal sun. His bile and
bitterness overflowed in acrimonious invectives."
The other prisoner's statement was a perfect counterpart of his comrade's.
Page 177
The first was named Melville Baillie, of Raleigh, Tennessee, and the other
Polk Childress, of Hickory Wythe, Tenn. Their friend, Parley Van Horn, of
Colliersville, Tenn., they left sick at the home of his cousin, Felix Grundy
Ayres, in Byhalia, Miss., who thus escaped. I left them and walked to the
opposite side of the prison, when I observed a file of soldiers drawn up in
front of the prison. Two officers entered, and walking up to the prisoners
with whom I had just been conversing, unfastened their chains, and ordered
them to follow. As the officers passed Capt. Bruce, he asked, "What are you
going to do with these men?" "Going to shoot them," was the reply. They then
showed him the warrant for their execution, having written across it in red
letters, "condemned to death." When the prisoners reached the door, the file
of soldiers separated, received the prisoners into the space in their midst,
marched them across the railroad, and shot them.
Thus was perpetrated an act of cruel tyranny that cries loudly to heaven for
vengeance. Two families, helpless and destitute, were thus each deprived of
its head, upon whom they were dependent for support, and abandoned to the
cold charity of a selfish world. The wages earned by a year's service in
behalf of the wicked, cruel, and vindictive Confederate states, was an
ignominious death and a dishonored grave. The widow and the fatherless cry to
heaven for vengeance, and their cries have entered into the ears of the Lord
Of Sabaoth.
I've enclosed a listing of Childers/Childress men I've found listed as have
served from LA. during the late unpleasantness of the 1860's. Anyone with
more info. or corrections, additions, family lore, stories, questions or
lies etc. please feel free to
contact me. Any other questions or queries gladly dealt with as well. AS
always my lists are as accurate as I can get them but please use them as
guide or a clue rather that a primary source. INDIANA JACK

Hello Everyone,
I just got word from Mike DeLoach, the TNGenWeb Digital Library Manager,
that S-K Publications has donated a copy of the 1830, 1840, and 1850
Campbell County Census Index to the Digital Library. The URLs of the pages
are
1830 Census Index
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tn/campbell/census/1830/cmpbel30.txt
1840 Census Index
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tn/campbell/census/1840/cmpbel40.txt
1850 Census Index
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tn/campbell/census/1850/cmpbel50.txt
He says that many, many TN County indexes have been donated and that he is
working to get them online. If you are interested in indexes in other TN
counties you might want to check with the main page at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tn/tnfiles.htm
These census indexes are searchable using the USGW search engine at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/tn/tnsearch.htm
I will get links up to these pages in the Campbell County TNGenWeb site
sometime this weekend. With all the class trips that I have had to go on and
class projects that I have had to help with, I am running behind in my work.
I hope that you find your ancestor in these indexes.

Dear Jim,
Thank you so much. I figured there was a simple answer but I am getting too old to look for it. I guess I am realizing my age as I receive my first SS check this month. O well, at least I lived to collect something.
Thanks again

You may have to adjust the way your software is configured. I use Netscape and in the email window, select "View" and under the pull down menu select "Wrap Long Lines" and that should make them as readable as you described.
