Everyone is ignorant, just in different subjects....
I am brand new to this digest, and I'm looking for a lead to my ancestors. I have always been told my great
grandfather, John Thomas Childress, came to Texas from Tennessee. I do not have a date for his birth, but he died
in 1935, when he was in his sixties or seventies. He married Annie Hensley, birth date or birth place unknown.
They died and were buried in Wellington, Texas. They had 3 girls and 3 boys, one of whom was my grandfather,
John Draton Childress, born November 18, 1879, in Comanche, Texas. My grandmother was Mary Susan Maebelle Webb,
daughter of Samuel Blackwell Webb, from Shelby & Bibb County, Alabama, and grand daughter of Jordan Webb, of
Kentucky. I would like to correspond with anyone who might have any information on my family line.
Joann (Childress) Bresciani
Thank you Carol for your information. Do you know what county in NC your
Childers were from? Jennifer
Reply:
My information about the following family has them moving from SC to (present
day's) Alexander County, NC. Alexander County was formed from parts of three
other NC counties: Wilkes, Caldwell, and ? (I don't have a Handy Book
available).
Ancestors sometimes "disappear" from a county between censuses, even though
they did not actually move away, if their county lines were redrawn. Where I
locate the family, in which county, depends on the year. My people did not
move, but their records did!
The line I research: James W.>William Riley>William Ferguson>Lavinia
Catherine (who married David Quince(y) WILLIAMS of Alexander County, NC.
I only have the information for one of James' sons: William Riley
CHILDRESS/CHILDERS, born 1815. But, I would like to correspond with others
who research the family group.
Associated surnames in Alexander County, NC: WILLIAMS, MILLSAPS, HENDREN,
GWALTNEY, ROBISON.

Good Morning!
Can anyone tell me if Federal Indexes are on line. I am most interested in
the Mexican War Index. Federal Archives will sell one for $13.00 and then
you donate it back to them. Such a deal.
Thanks much, Mary Wright
Since we have all just been reminded of the Childress/Childers confusion, I
will try this one again.

I am very familiar with the Childress ladies that you mentioned. They were
very kind to my grandfather who found it necessary to leave his own home at
the age of 9. I met one of them in the mid-forties but don't remember which
one, as I was about three at the time. It was hot, there was a big porch,
there were pecans to be picked, a large fluffy dog that kept rounding me up,
and a whole lot of talking and hugging was going on. My grandfather was Thomas
Watson the second son of D(aulby) Newton Riggins and Dora Malone. This
Daulby(1866-1915) was the eleventh child of Dolby Newton Riggins and Melissa
Rasberry. let me do some file picking...I have a few cousins on this
line...Maryellen

MITCHELL CHILDRESS, SR., JOHN CHILDRESS, and WILLIAM
CHILDRESS all died in Knox Co, TN, after having served in
the Revolutionary War. Were these three men brothers?
1. MITCHELL CHILDRESS, SR. was born October 23, 1750, in
Henrico Co, VA, and moved to Amherst Co, VA, as a small
child (per his Rev War pension application.) He married
(1) Hannah Webb ca 1768-1769, the daughter of John and
Ursula Webb. John Webb sold land in Amherst Co, VA and
moved to Wilkes Co, NC, about the same time Mitchell
Childress, Sr. first moved to NC. According to a 1773
Amherst Co, VA deed, John Webb bought 180 acres on
Threshers Creek and was a neighbor of John and Henry
Childress, Peter Carter, and John Stinnett.
Mitchell Childress, Sr. lived near John Webb at the time of
the 1787 Wilkes Co, NC Tax List. John Webb died in Wilkes
Co, NC, per his will. Mitchell Childress, Sr. moved to
Greene Co, TN in 1793 and then into Knox Co, TN in 1794
2. WILLIAM CHILDRESS was born in 1755 in Virginia, served
in the Rev War from VA, and married Margaret (Peggy) -
maiden name unknown.
3. JOHN CHILDRESS was born on December 2, 1759, in
Albermarle Co, VA, and died January 11, 1849, in Knox Co,
TN. According to 1787 Tax List of Wilkes Co, NC, John
Childress and Mitchell Childress lived in the same area in
Wilkes Co, NC. Did John Childress and Mitchell Childress
move to TN on or about the same time?
According to the 1844 Knox Co, TN will of MITCHELL
CHILDRESS, SR., his children were:
1. Mitchell Childress, Jr., born circa 1769
2. James Childress, born circa 1776, died before April
1843, as he was deceased when his father made in will in
April 1843.
3. Ursula Childress, born ca 1780, married her cousin,
William Childress on Oct 13, 1801. Lived in Knox Co, TN.
4. Polly Childress, married Robert Rasdan/Risden/Raysdan
5. Susannah Childress, married ? Joseph Robertson
All of the above 5 children were by Mitchell Childress,
Sr.'s first wife, Hannah Webb Childress.
In March 1815 Mitchell Childress, Sr. married Rachel
Hendrix (daughter of Garrett Hendrix, Jr.), and they were
the parents of:
6. John K. Childress, born 1815, moved to Jackson Co, AL,
by the time he was 20 or 21, and married Ruth Brown Burgess
in 1840. John K. Childress died in Jackson Co, AL on
November 24, 1897.
NOTE: At one time I thought John K. Childress (1815-1897)
was the son of the John Childress who died in Knox Co, TN
in 1849. However, a document found in 1998 proves he is
son of Mitchell Childress, Sr.
Where would John K. Childress have gone to school in Knox
Co, TN? He had above average education for a man born in
1815. He taught school, served as a Justice of the Peace,
served as school trustee, and was known as a "civic pillar"
in his community as well as a "pillar" in the Methodist
church. In fact, he helped organize a Methodist church.
His children were all well educated, and two of his sons
were highly regarded school teachers and married women with
above average education (college preparatory) for women in
their time period.
Would like to correspond with other descendants of MITCHELL
CHILDRESS, SR.
