Thanks, Kay James Fowler
If Joseph was not the son of William and Ann, then would we assume that
their son named Joseph died in childhood? I say this because it would
appear from the Douglas Register that they did have a son named Joseph.
I am a Binkley researcher, not a Childress researcher; so, I can only
speculate. One possibility is that William had made some kind of gift to
Joseph before he left NC as sometimes happens with the oldest. Another
possibility is that William had completely lost contact with his descendants
in Tennessee.
I am not sure that you can conclude that someone was not someone's child
because he or his descendants were omitted from a will. People leave
children and grandchildren out of their wills for a variety of reasons. And
yes, Joseph had children living in 1822.

Someone sent me these births from *The Douglas Register* several years ago,
and I have verified them now that the Register is on Ancestry:
*Section: Births and Baptisms
Will: Childers & Ann Childers a son named Joseph born Nov:
25 1764. Baptized Ap: 28 1765. p. 71.
Will: & Ann Childers a son named William born Ap: 5 1766.
Baptized May 11 1766. p. 73.
William Childers & Ann Childers a Daughter named Elizabeth
born Ap: 9 1768. Baptized May 15 1768. p. 81.
Will: Childers & Ann Childers a son named Benjamin born Ap:
15 1771. Baptized Oct 27 1771. p. 90.
Will Childers & Ann Childers a daughter named Ann born Mar.
19, 1773. Baptized May 16, 1773. p. 94.
Will & Ann Childers twins viz Salley & Jesse born Jan. 30,
1776. Baptized Mar. 10, 1776. p 99.*
Maybe I am missing something, but the two families you show do not seem that
different to me. Joseph may not have been mentioned in his father's will
because he died some years before his father:
*From *Tennessee Tidbits, 1778-1914, Volume II*, by Marjorie Hood Fischer
and Ruth Blake Burns, Ram Press, Vista, California, 1988,
p. 59:
CHILDRESS, Jacob was bound 7 February 1804 to Jacob Pinkley until age 21.
(Ro TN, Co Ct Min, 1/285)
p. 60:
CHILDRESS, Joseph was an orphan 6 May 1806 when he was bound to Henry Fry
until age 21. (Ro TN, Co Ct Min, 1/390)
*
Jacob Pinkley/Binkley was the brother of Joseph's wife Elizabeth Binkley.
Henry Fry/Frey was married to Elizabeth's sister Catherine Binkley.
Joseph, Jr., and Jacob may also have died before their grandfather. I have
found no further record of them. There is an oral tradition that Jacob died
at the Battle of New Orleans; but I have not been able to confirm that, and
I think it is unlikely.
A third brother, George, married Rebecca Murdock in 1831. They both died
before 1850 when their children were living with Henry and Catherine Frey in
Robertson County, Tennessee:
*From the 1850 United States Census for Robertson County, Tennessee, p. 114:

Joseph and Elizabeth Binkley Childress also had daughters:
Sarah [1790-1876] m. Samuel Farmer
Catherine [1792-1857] m. Alfred S. Reding
Elizabeth [1798-1869] m. Rev. Thomas Martin
Elizabeth Childress was born about 1768 in Frederick County, Maryland, to
Johannes Binkley and Johanna Jacobina Leedy. [The Binkleys were
German-speaking Swiss and members of the Moravian Church. In accordance
with German name forms, "Johannes" was the form for those called "John."
The form "Johann" was used when a male was called by his middle name.
Johann Adam/John Adam Binkley was the younger brother of Johannes/John
Binkley and was not the father of Elizabeth Binkley Childress. I might add
that Spanhour was a surname found among the Moravians in NC and helps
connect the will of William Childress with Joseph Childress and the
Binkleys.] Joseph Childress married Elizabeth Binkley on 10 August 1787 in
Surry County, North Carolina. John Binkley, probably Elizabeth's father,
was the bondsman.
Johannes Binkley and his family moved from Maryland to North Carolina in
1772. Their arrival in what is now Robertson County, Tennessee, in December
1799 is recorded in the account of two Moravian missionaries, neighbors of
the Binkleys in North Carolina, who were traveling in Tennessee at the time
of their arrival. It is believed that Joseph Childress and his family
probably came to Tennessee at the same time.
Elizabeth Binkley Childress was living with her son-in-law and daughter,
Thomas and Elizabeth Martin, in 1850. She died between 1850 and 1860 and is
believed to be buried in Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery in
Robertson County, Tennessee, in an unmarked grave.
Elizabeth Binkley Childress was the older sister of my great-great
grandfather.

Subject: WILLIAM AND ANNE CHILDERS/CHILDRES WITH AND WITHOUT A SON
NAMED JOSEPH CHILDRESS WHO MARRIED ELIZ BINKLEY
Can anyone tell me who this Wm Childers/Childress is and where does he
fit in the Childress/Childers scheme of things. I have seen another
William Childress posted on line that has the same identical wife and
children, living in the same area, but with an additional son named
Joseph Childress.
This begs a question: How can two different families with the same
parents have the same named children(except an additional child name
Joseph, and live in the same area. Could they be the same family?
If so what happened to Joseph in the will below?
Helpful comments and thoughts are welcome........Kay
