New member to this board...hoping to get thru a decades long brick wall in
Limestone Co, TX.
my GGG father was John William Childress (b. abt 1826 and d. 02/07/1871
Kosse, TX). He was married to Minerva Cranford.
What I know:
1850
JW and Minerva were in Walker Co, AL in 1850.
Also in the house was an elder "James" age 60. Gave his birthplace as NC.
This calculates to 1790.
1860
Titus Co, TX
1870
Limestone Co, TX
In 1870, JW is living next door to a TAJ Childress...(Thomas Andrew Jackson
Childress). No relation known.
However, TAJ had a daughter named Sarah Jane.. JW had a son named William
Edward. They Married.
Both with surname Childress.....both following similar migration
patterns...(TAJ was in Upshur Co in 1860)...cousins? second cousins?
TAJ's line is fairly well documented...his brother Abram was the family
group settling in Red River County, TX. Father of both was Douglas Childress
from Laurens SC.
My family has a history of James, Johns, and William, this probably isnt
unique but......
I just know there is a connection between My John William and TAJ
Childress...they roughly 2-4 years apart in age.
I have been researching my collateral lines for years but its so frustating
to know more about my 4th cousins than my own GGG father. I just know my
CHILDRESS line has lots of history if I can only make the link.........
If anyone has relations or clues, I'd love to finally make some headway on
this.
Here is my site and a link here for TAJ Childress

I believe there is some connection between the Childress families of Prince Edward County and those of Charlotte County. I believe this because of three reasons:
1.) -Thomas Childress who was born in Charlotte county in 1785 married Nancy Singleton Pugh in 1816 in Charlotte county. Nancy Pugh was the daughter of John Pugh.
-Obadiah Childress of Prince Edward County married Liza Pugh of Charlotte County in 1823 in Charlotte County. She was also the Daughter of John Pugh.
-Both of them were married by John Chappell
2.) -My gggggrandfather William R. Childress who was born in Charlotte County in 1805 married Mary Childress in 1828 in Mecklenburg County. She was born in Prince Edward County in 1807. Her father was named William Childress as well.
- The Thomas Childress that is mentioned above lived right next my William R. Childress for about thirty years.
3.) -Stephen Childress who was born in Prince Edward County lived there in 1810 but by 1820 he lived in the same area as Thomas Childress and William R. Childress. He moved back to Prince Edward by 1830 census. So theoretically he could have lived in Charlotte from 1811 to 1829. Why did he live so close to both my grandfather and Thomas Childress and then move back.
