I was able to find the following information about a Douglas Childress

that this Douglas
Childress was married twice. The first wife is unknown but seems to be
the mother of all but one of Douglas Childress' children. He then
married Amanda
Cheshire/Chessire and had one female child named Matilda Childress.
Named after Amanda's mother who was also named Matilda. I have included
the web page link to this information, so perhaps you can go to that web

It also appears, by the included information, that Douglas Childress was

William (Childree)and Thomas Childree came from South Carolina to

By 1827, a Thomas Childers, Revolutionary soldier, was living in Walton

Doughlas Childers (No. 226) was enumerated in Gwinnett County in 1820

Per the following information, I must conclude there is an error in
information being circulated on the siblings of Bartholomew Childress b. 1801 SC and
died AL.
Per previously posted information found in Simpson Co KY, Bartholomew
Childress had a sister Nancy Terrell Childress who married ALSEY BROWN. In the 1850
census where were 5 Alsey Brown's living in the US, of which only one fits
the profile of a potential brother-in-law of Bartholomew. Based on the
following, and the conclusion that other researchers have missed locating siblings
of Bartholomew, Alsey Brown Childress would be a nephew of Nancy Terrell
Childress, wife of Alsey Brown of Allen Co KY.
Again, where can I find the source documentation for a will, deed, etc, that
can verify Bartholomew as a son of William Childress? Based on the location
of the Simpson Co KY information, the Thomas Childress living in the same
county as Jonathan Sentell/Senter in 1800 would be a logical choice.
Has there been DNA sampling of the supposed descendants of William
Childress?

Thank you. But this does not answer my question:
The bio I sent mentions that the Bartholomew Childress b. abt 1800 SC of AL
had 2 sisters in Allen Co KY: Nancy Terrell Childress Brown and Elizabeth
Childress Center, and no other information, including the following accounts for
their relationship.
Could the information on the children of William Childress be missing some
people, and what documentation exists for William's children: Will? Deeds?
Bible records?

The Childress Family
The Childress Family can be traced back to England; however; we
will start with Joseph Childress/Childers of Henrico County, Virginia.
He was born about 1850, son of John Childress, son of Joseph Childers,
Sr., son of Thomas Childers, son of Robert Childers, son of Richard
Childers, son of Ralph Childers of England.
Joseph Childress/Childers and John Ward, Sr. were brothers-in-law
and were elected to convey canoes down the St. James River to Thomas
Jefferson during the American Revolution. Joseph Childress married
probably in Albemarle County, Virginia, Sarah Goolsby daughter of John
T. Goolsby. They had three known children:
1.William Childress of Virginia, born about 1770.
2.John Childress, Jr., married 19 Mar 1796, a cousin, Sally Goolsby.
3.Mary "Polly" Childress married Mr. Woodly.
William Childress of Virginia had five children. Wife unknown.
1.Milly Childress born 1789/90 in Virginia, married 1 Dec 1809 in Elbert
County, Georgia, George C. Walker.
2.Lucy Childress born 1791 in Virginia, married first husband Frederick
Rodgers; married second husband William Holland.
3.Sarah Childress born 1796 in Virginia; married Tarleton Solomon Ward
son of John Ward, Jr. and Nancy Elizabeth Knight. William and his family
migrated to Abbeville County, South Carolina between 1796 and 1798.
4.William Childress of Mississippi was born 1798 in Abbeville County,
South Carolina. He went to Jackson County, Mississippi where he married
Elizabeth Ward, daughter of John Ward, Jr., and Nancy Elizabeth Knight.
5.Bartholomew Gordon Childress born 1800 in Abbeville County, North
Carolina. He married Nancy Ana Ward, daughter of John Ward, Jr. and
Nancy Elizabeth Knight.
William was named administrator of his father's Estate. On 30 June 1798,
William was a buyer at the Estate Sale of Andrew White. In 1805, William
was listed in the Elbert County lottery. What happened to William after
his Mother died in 1811 in unknown. He was alive at the time she wrote
her Will. I believe William and John Ward, Jr. were killed in the Indian
War of 1812. There were several William Childress’s in that War. It is
believed that the five children were orphans when they went to
Mississippi about 1814.
Bartholomew Gordon Childress was married about 1825 to Nancy Ana Ward in

A John C. Ward is found in an early Mobile County census of 1816.
John and Nancy's daughter Nancy Ann Ward was baptized Ana. She lived in
Jackson County, Mississippi for a number of years where her husband,
Bartholomew Childress, was the Sheriff at one time. It has been said
that they went to Jackson County because the schools were better there.
They are back in Baldwin County by 1860. She and Bartholomew are buried
at Miller's Memorial in Baldwin County, Alabama.
Patrick, Henry, and Tarleton remained in Jackson County through the 1850
census. Tarleton married Sarah Childress. According to the deeds,
Patrick was still in Jackson County in 1867. He married Elizabeth Davis.
He was the postmaster there in 1825 and 1835. Henry and his wife
Emmeline, thought to be a second wife, are in Baldwin County in the 1860
census. Henry has no wife listed in the 1850 census of Jackson County.
John Jr. is last found in Jackson County in 1840. Moses is found in
Jackson County in the 1840 census and in Silsbee, Tyler County, Texas in
1850 where it is said that he died. He married Hannah Davis, a sister of
Patrick's wife Elizabeth.

WILLIAM ALLEN BROWN (_http://www.allencountyky.com/info/brown.htm_
(http://www.allencountyky.com/info/brown.htm) )
Biographical sketch written by E. Scott Brown dated 14 Nov. 1897
This is a hand written biographical sketch obtained while visiting the
Simpson County (KY) Historical Society. It was transcribed exactly as written by
Anna Brown Hunt.
William Allen Brown was born was born in Allen Co. Ky. on 22nd day of
April 1820 at the Old Orchard on part of a 400 acre survey owned at our times
by on head waters of Dry Creek about 5 miles
southeast of Scottsville near the Old WILLIS CENTER Place- afterwards owned by s'd
Wm. .....
Said Wm. A.'s father was Allsey Brown who was born in (space) Co. North
Carolina on (blank) day of (blank) 179_. And died on East Fork of Bays Fork in
Allen Co. Ky. on (blank) day of Oct. 1864, was a youth say about 16 years of
age when he moved for N. C. to Ky. with his father Drury Brown who settled
near & on adjoining farm to where Wm. A. was born. Said Drury was born in N.C.
& died on this said farm where he settled in Allen Co. Ky. aged about 70
years- died about 1832 & buried under a walnut tree on said farm. ......
Said Allsey Brown, father of the subject of this sketch, was married on
day of 18 to Miss NANCY TERRELL CHILDRESS who was born in South
Carolina on the day of 17 and who was living with old Harry
Collins in Allen Co. Ky. then Warren Co Ky. till near the time when she and Allsey
married. She was a sister to WILLIS CENTER’s wife, ELIZABETH & came to Ky.
on foot, leading a horse which carried such goods as they brought.
She had a brother BARTHOLOMEW CHILDRESS who lived in Mobile Ala & was at
our time Sheriff of his County. Said Nancy came from Georgia
here...............................

In various lineage website's such as FamilySearch.org and WorldConnect.org,
and various information found via a Google site for Bartholomew Childress, I
find no information that identifies Nancy and Elizabeth as Bartholomew's
sisters. I also cannot find any source information for assuming a William
Childress and Nancy Ward were his parents.
In the 1800 Edgefield Co SC Census, there is a Thomas Childress... and
Jonathan Sentell/Senters who is supposed to be Willis' Center's father. The
mention that Nancy Terrell Childress came from Georgia is interesting because
one of Jonathan Sentell/Senter's son's John migrated to Jones Co GA where a
William Childress is found in 1810.
Can anyone enlighten me on this delemma? The earliest Childress marriage in
Warren Co KY was Elisha Childress in 1828. Could he have been a younger
brother to Nancy, Elizabeth and Bartholomew? The migration of the
Centers/Senters and Childress family's from SC to GA for the Indian Lottery and gold
rush, then to southern KY together would make sense if Nancy and Elisha followed
their sister Elizabeth with her new husband Willis Center.
Thank you
Sharon Tabor
