My question is why did she refer to this as the "Abraham Childres Will"? Is
she implying that this deed, which is the text, was actually filed as his
will [she gives no references] or that the deed in some way acts as a
substitute will? This is important in interpreting Dennstedt. who states
The Childers family in Henrico Co., Va., traces its roots to Abram Childers
and his unnamed widow. Abram does not appear on any list of headlights nor
did he take out a patent in his own name. The date and place of his arrival
in the New World is unknown. A deed rerecorded at a later date in Henrico
County, however, establishes his residence there by 1656. On 28 Feb. 1656/7
William Harris of Curles sold for "one bill" to Abrah Childers "the parcel
of land he now lives on." No acreage was mentioned but the land and his
house was by the river on the lower side of Morgan's landing and was bounded
by the river, Morgan's, a meadow, a swamp and Clarke's path. The witnesses
were John Epes and Thomas Liggon. Ab Childres made a "T" mark when he signed
the memorandum dated 2 March 1656/7 agreeing that Ja. Robison could "enjoy
his part of the lease."{Henrico Co., Va., Record Bk. 1677-92, pp. 199-200}
No doubt the rerecording of this deed was necessary to make the following
transaction legal. On 20 Nov. 1680 Abraham Chi1dres (Jr.) exchanged land
with John Pleasants. He was to receive 548 acres on Four Mile Creek and 900
pounds of tobacco from Pleasants and in turn conveyed to him 140 acres
"being the whole dividend which was purchased by my father Abrah Childers of
Major William Harris" and "given unto me as of his will." Abraham's part of
this plantation, located on the north side of James River, was "to be
surrendered to him now and the remainder after my Mother's decease." The
witnesses were Robert Sharpe and Robert Evans and the' deed was recorded 10
Feb. 1680/1.{Ibid., p. 150}
What did Dennstedt mean by referring to this deed between Harris and
Childres as "rerecorded at a later date in Henrico County"? She did not
give a reference for this.
Moreover, Dennstedt selectivley quoted from somewhere (not sure if it was
from the deed itself or from somewhere else). Does any one have a copy of
this deed? I think we need to see the complete text if it exists or if she
quoted from somewhere else a reference to it as well as the complete quote.
Since Dennstedt used all this as premise for concluding Philemon had to have
been the younger brother of Abraham, I think some clarity is required
regarding the issue of Abraham's will.
On a separate issue, Virginnia Hanks in Childers of Early Virginia Henrico
to Amherst records by year
Prepared by Virginia Hanks , Ellenburg, Washington found at
http://www.childers-childress.com/hanks1.html includes the following:
169? - Henry Childers had sons Henry, Walter and James, New Kent Co,. St.
Peter's registry
Does anyone have any idea where she got this?

Green,
There were more immigrants listed. I only gave those named Philemon, Lemon,
etc. These records are from a printed source. I'll name them all later or
any of you who have the same information, name them for Green. Thanks.

Dear List,
In this post I'm going to try to set the stage for a discussion of the
Childers/Childress (and derivatives) lineages that were established in
Henrico County, VA prior to 1700. There are two important documents which
must be considered in any such discussion. These are
1) 1679 Henrico County Head of Families
A version of this can easily be seen at
http://www.virginians.com/appendix/appendix_f.htm which is an appendix on
John Prichett's site http://www.virginians.com and is recommended because it
does not contain errors that occur in the edited (and published) versions
from elsewhere.
Prichett includes at the beginning of this the following :
"On 25 April 1679 the Virginia General Assembly passed An act for the
defence of the country against the incursions of the Indian Enemy. To
comply with the Act, Henrico County ordered her citizens to fitt out men
horse armes &c. and appointed a few prominent men to identify each head of
household in the several parts of the county [Hening, v. 2, pp. 433-440]. In
June 1679 the court recorded the following account of ye several fortye
Tythables. The number after each name is the number of tithables."
Given the purpose of the act and method of implementation used, it is
reasonable to assume that the product that resulted was a complete listing
of the famililes residing in Henrico County in 1679.
It's only limitations are that the individual tithables were not listed.
These would of course include children over 16 (not listed separately) as
well as indentured servants and others considered as tithables living with
the listed families.
In particular, there were three listed identified as Childers (two directly
and one more cryptically). Here is an edited version (removing Prichett's
extra details inclusions) of the sublists in which they occurrred (note the
names of the prominent men who are to give notice are at the bottom of each
list and not at the top, an error propagated widely, which if true would
have made a mockery of the issue of giving notice).

John Millner is ordered to give notice to these.
So for us, there were three adult Childers present in 1679. These were
Abraham [other data will allow us to identify him as Abraham II of
Dennstedt] living in the area that Benjamin Hatcher was to give notice to
and Philemon and Thomas (listed as Tho right below Philemon with no surname
listed) living in the area that John Milner was to give notice to.
While it is possible that there were others with the surname
Childers/Childress living outside of Henrico County at this time period,
I've never seen any data to indicate this was the case. Does anyone know of
any?
Also, it is possible that someone with the surname Childers/Childress was a
tithable in some other household. Again, I've never seen any references of
any kind to indicate this was the case. Does anyone know of any?
Now as to inferences we can draw from this data. By the placement of Tho,
without surname, right below Philemon it is logical to conclude that Thomas
is the likely son of Philemon [the fact that he had a son Thomas is
established by deed later -- From Dennstedt -- Henrico Co., Va., Record Bk.
1697-1704, pp. 91-92]. Given that Thomas had to have been at least 16 (more
likely 21) to be listed in this manner, it is clear that Philemon could not
have been the younger brother of Abraham II as claimed by Dennstedt. While
there is other data which also supports this refutation, I do not feel it is
necessary to belabor the point here -- see below. It is enough to say this
makes that the early lineage of this family an open question at this point.
Time for a digression. Some things that would be useful in proceeding.
Dennstedt was not the only person who had attempted to deal with early
lineage of this family. Her version, at least in part has now been refuted.
I've seen some other names put forth as having researched this question.
I think it would be useful to have their theories before us as well.
Here are the one I know about from The Childers~Childress Family
Association. Are there others?
1) Abram Childers and Jane Howard By Pat Searight
Their children were:
Sarah Childers b 1644/49 in Henrico Conty, Virginia and died Jan 1721/22 in
Henrico. She married 1664/70 in Henrico County Nicholas Perkins III. They
lived on Four Mile Creek. They had 8 children.
William Childers b 1647 and d 1725 Henrico County, Virginia. He left a large
estate in Henrico. His children were Burton, John who married Rachel
Perkins, Robert, and Gracey. [There is a note saying he was too old when
these children were born.]
Abraham Childers b 1 Apr 1655 in Curles, Henrico County, Virginia. He was a
planter and a race starter. He served many times on the Grand Jury. He could
read and write. In 1690 his father gave him property in Varina, near
Richmond. He may have died in 1693. In 1675/76 in Henrico County, Virginia,
he married Anne Pew daughter of Henry Pew and Jane Womack. Anne had a sister
Jane who married John Price Sr. and Hugh Lygon. After Abraham died Anne
married Mr. Adkins. Henry Pew purchased land from Matthew Agee. Henry died
1790/11 in Henrico County, Virginia. He owned land on Four Mile Creen on
north side of James River. Abraham & Ann had children: Abraham b 1677 m (1)
Elizabeth Cannon and (2) Lucy Thomas; Henry Childers b 1678 m Lucretia
Jones; Robert Childres b 1685 m Catherine; Philemon Childers b 1682/7 m.
Elizabeth Evans; John Childers b 1683/4 m Elizabeth; and Jane Childers b
1695 m. John Smith.
Philemon Childers b 1656 in Curles, Henrico County, Virginia was called
Lemon. He was involved with Nicholas Perkins in land purchase. He was a
planter and he died 10 Jan 1717 in Henrico. He married very young - in 1669
in Henrico Mary Evans daughter of Griffin Evans of Henrico County, Virginia
who died 15 May 1681. They had a daughter who married James Horton Sr;
Thomas who married Mary Holmes and Mary Milner; Abraham who married Hester
Pledge, widow of John Cannon; Philemon Jr; and Mary who married her cousin
Humphrey Smith. [A note says 1 source has his wife as Mary Howard, daughter
of John Howard. Another note questions whether wifes name was Hester or
Ester - will of Abraham d 1720 clearly shows Hester.]

4) Virginia Hanks -- I am unable to tell from the various documents she has
there what her theory is regarding the relationship between Abraham II and
Philemon. Can any one help me on this one?
Maybe she was smart and didn't propose one.
_____________________________________________________________________________
Comments on the above: Since none of the male names listed other than
Abraham, Philemon and Thomas appear in the Head of Familes List of 1679, it
is extremely doubtful that the proposed male names were children of Abraham
I. All of them consider Philemon to be a younger brother of Abraham II,
which I am disputing. The only interesting twist is Jim Farmer's, in that
he recognized he had to put Thomas somewhere (he found him on the 1679 list
but included the error I referred to above as to whose sublist he was on),
so he made him a younger brother to Abraham II and Philemon. Jim Farmer
also included the following data which calls into question his conclusions.
Henrico Co Patent Book, #6---John Maies patent for 89 acres to transport 2
persons: Philemon Childers, Thos Compton, 27 Oct 1673.
Ibid---James Akin and Richard Womack received patent for transport of two
persons, Philip Childers, Ann Dally. 26 May 1673.
Ibid---Robert King, patent for ten person including Tho Childers, 15 Apr
1667.//
Ibid---William Hatcher, patent for five persons including Tho Childers,
26 Apr 1674.
There is only one Thomas listed on the 1679 list, so it is likely that the
Robert King and William Hatcher patents refer to that one Thomas. It could
either be the case that more than one person claimed him (which did happen)
or he made a trip back to England and there could correctly be 2 patents
claiming transportation for him. In either case (assuming an age of 16 to
not have been listed as a child) he would have been born 1651 or before and
could not have been a younger brother of Abraham II. Note: if there was an
older Thomas (and how he would fit in would be a big question) who died
leaving no record then the younger Thomas would have to have been born 1658
or before. The only argument that I can think of that might support this
would be that then we would have Philemon coming over first followed about a
year later by his son Thomas.
It is also curious that the 1673 patent(s) claiming Philemon seem to have
been ignored. How can one argue that Abraham II was born in Virginia (there
is no patent for transporting him) and that his younger brother (" Philemon
had to be his younger twin or born within a year after Abraham" as Dennstedt
concludes) was transported. I'm not buying any of it and considered all of
the above which have Philemon as a younger brother of Abraham II refuted by
the data.
The only thing that I see that all the data supports is
There were 3 (and only 3) Childers/Childress living in Henrico county in
1679. These were Abraham II (son of Abraham I -- "the emigrant"), Philemon
(most likely a first cousin of Abraham II -- more on this later) who was
transported prior to 1673 and Philemon's son Thomas, who was transported
prior to 1674 (and possibly 1667).
Please feel free to comment on this. Also if someone has more details on
items cited I'm sure the group will appreciate you posting these.
to be continued

Green,
My interest in this list is obvious to those who know me. Its to make known
to everyone here, what I have in my files, if they should need it. I've been
successful in proving certain questions regarding various branches of
Childress, while other's, no one has been able to prove one way or another. I would
love to say that I can prove every single branch of Childress or Childers, but I
can't make that claim nor can anyone else that I know of, not for a lack of
trying either.
I share the research I have personally accumulated through research in the
Georgia Archives and National Archives which was in Atlanta, where I live. I
have paper records from other well known Childress descendants on their own
ancestry, some I collaborated with them on. What's in my files, I gladly share
with anyone. By that, I mean the original copies of deeds, wills, census and
etc., of which I do have a fairly large collection, since I began this in 1979.
The early Childers/Childress ancestry has been very difficult to prove.
Those before us have tried and have given us their conclusions, which is what many
Childers and Childress have published on paper and all over the web. NOW
however, we have the DNA project. As Patrick Childress has pointed out, there
are spreadsheets to be viewed and groupings of those who have taken the DNA. I
will also add, that the Childress-List Administrators have taken on a
difference of opinion from what the DNA has actually shown. I prefer to refer to
Patrick Childress's family website in that regard. I think the DNA project is
just fantastic. However, I am leery of some of the assumptions regarding those
who have been placed in the so called Celtic group, I have my doubts as to the
proof of that. As for me personally, I have no living Childress male I can
rely on at present, but am looking.
I suppose the DNA grouping is necessary. It seems to me that the majority of
those who took the DNA are Viking, sharing both the Childers and Childress
surname alike. This should tell us something!
I know your trying to set the record straight and I encourage you in that
regard! As I have said, I am happy to share what I have, only if it's from
documents I feel are reliable, but I gladly give my own opinion to, I am a
Childress and I have no problem with any discussion or in making comments:)
MaryJean
Green, Rene, Kay and anyone else brave enough to answer this:) -
While you were on vacation Green and have returned (assumed, since we've just
heard from you) - I've been looking through as many files as I had the time
for, regarding ANY Henry (Childers, Childress) and who they may or may not
connect to. I have to say, refreshing my memory, they are ALL as confusing as I
remembered. With all the added data lately, from the Childress-List owners,
Con (Childress), Kay, Rene and you, I have reached no conclusion, other then
what I felt was a good source, at least for one of them.
One researcher says that Henry "Childers" and his wife Lucresia Jones had a
son named Henry and one named Thomas. That's true, I have the original copy of
the will to prove it. They also conclude that Thomas survived and he lived
in "Charlotte Co., VA." This I had in my notes was never proven. To continue,
Henry, his brother, owned land in Amherst or Albemarle before he migrated to
Lunenburg County and he married Mary. I read all the written histories I had
on Henry who married Mary Farmer, I didn't find mention that this land in
Albemarle or Amherst was of huge importance. Then this monolog said, that Thomas
Childress, called, "Charlotte Co, VA" - had two sons, one named Henry and he
took care of the land in Amherst or Albemarle (can't recall which county) when
he was a teenager, without any parental or otherwise guardian looking out for
him. I believe it said Henry and his brother took care of the property. Whew.
Then the messages regarding John Childress whose brother was Henry Childress.
Henry was to have married a Goolsby, so he couldn't be the Henry who the
Stinnett-List researchers and descendants claim married one of their own,
Susannah Stinnett, purported sister to Pricilla Stinnett who married John Childress
who just happens to be in the will of their father, Benjamin Stinnett, Sr. and
named as "son-in-law".
Then you have a land deed between the son of Benjamin Stinnett, JR. and
naturally, another or was it, HENRY Childress whose not supposed to be even
remotely related to the John Childress of whose land this property borders. And add
to the mix in yet another deed was the name of ABRAHAM Childress whose part of
the mix, in deeding land TO Henry Childress.
To add further confusion. I checked the original copies of the census I have
for those two counties (Albemarle and Amherst) - Amherst is the one in
question, so showing for head of household were three adult JOHN Childress, for
1783/5 and also Henry Childress. Virginia Hanks, seasoned researcher for years,
(See CFA website) said that she descends from Henry "Childers" out of the same
place, sigh.
Was it her Henry in the census along side all the other's. JOHN (3 of them),
HENRY, GOOLSBY, JOSEPH?
Later, there are two JOHN Childress, their Head of the household...the other
one is no longer living in Amherst, he's gone to Burke Co, NC by 1786, his
Rev. War Pension says so, in his own words. So the two that are left, adults
that is, could possibly be the ones in the deeds known as SR. and JR. and one is
shown to be married to PRICILLA. No Henry there. If he is, he is hiding.
Henry Childress or Childers whose in Lunenburg is there with my Jeremiah and
a Robert Childress. As you know, Henry's will was probated there. His land,
some of it, was in the part carved from Lunenburg, it became Charlotte County,
which is where MY Childresses were, because they had actually lived in
Lunenburg, right near Henry and his family. Along with Robert Childress whose
unaccounted for in my opinion. After Henry (Mary Farmer) died, his land was sold
and I have the original copies of these deeds. Mary is named and as widow of
Henry.
You probably know the rest. What I have come up against while reviewing all
these records, along with the Childress-List monolog (Thomas of Charlotte Co,
VA), Henry who married Mary Farmer, Henry whose Virginia Hanks ancestor and
who she named as Childers, then the Henry who is purported to have married a
Gooslby, is that all of this is a very confused mess.
Most everything I have read which has been written recently. makes NO sense
to me, the logic is off and the lack of even mentioning Abraham Childress in
the mix with the connection to a deed of land in Amherst which mentions a HENRY
Childress and add Benjamin Stinnett Sr., his son in law John Childress, the
Stinnett-List claim.
It's not going to be clear until someone can place all of these without
separating them in to DNA groups. I think those mentioned in the deeds are all
related, the ones I have mentioned. Anything earth shattering we don't know
about, care to share your thoughts anyone? I'm fresh out of idea's at the moment!
However, one more thing here, there's the Childress-List monolog? That one
really throws a chink in the mix of all this. They have two Childress who own
land which is on the line with another (Henry) Childress who they say share NO
DNA with the two on the other side of the land? What about the name of
Abraham Childress whose in that mix? They also say two those in the deeds, John
and Henry Childress are Celtic while the other two are Viking? Or have I read
it incorrectly? Seems a later message on Childress-List answered another list
members questions regarding Thomas Childress ancestry, (purported by them to
be the brother of Henry, both sons of Henry and Lucresia Jones Childress).
Never did find the conclusion to that one from them or anyone else. Con
Childress was going in the right direction, but he is no longer posting to the
Childress-List as far as I could see from the archives. I am not a subscriber to the
Childress-List for the record.
So Green, any progress on figuring out what in the world is going on here
with any of these Childress? As I said, I read Con Childress'es messages and
they make more sense then any I have read so far. Wish I could sort this one out
and who knows, maybe it will happen. Right now, I've read about four
different versions and the various reasons and so called proof. How many Henry
Childress did you find in any of the tax and or census for Amherst as head of HH?
Is there any proof at all, other then a land deed which would prove that Henry
"Childers" who migrated to Lunenburg (where the Farmers lived) was not the
one married to Mary Farmer? Any proof that those Childress mentioned in the
Stinnett deed were not all related? What of the one's left in Amherst? Any
thoughts on who they were? For the record, if it matters, I found ONE marriage in
GA between a John Childress and a Goolsby, 1796, Oglethorp County. Comments
anyone?

Green -
There has always been a debated discussion about whose daughter Sarah
Childers / Childress is, whether there was and her supposed marriage to Nicholas
Perkins. There's no known record of it, but that's not unusual, many of the
Childers / Childress marriage records were destroyed. That didn't mean there
wasn't one. Wish I could help you.
As for all the Philemon's? They show up in deeds, wills and tax and county
records, but it's been tough to figure out which ones belong to which. There
are original copies of some wills for them and mention of them, I have all of
those.

Alexander Childress born 1751 died Dec. 22, 1839, married Frances
Warriner and then Temeperance Bennett. Rev. war service Virginia line,
Montross. While looking at the service record a letter from Alexander is
attached which states " after the service he entered into service with
Col John Pleasants as his Miller at the N_____ Mills on 4 Mile Creek in
the County of Henrico.

Described below are three members of the Childress family who served in
the Civil War. They are
RICHARD ALEXANDER CHILDRESS and JOHN MARION CHILDRESS, who were
brothers, and
a first cousin, who was also named RICHARD ALEXANDER CHILDRESS.
John Marion applied to the state of Arkansas for a pension. A
Certificate of Confederate Pension issued in 1979 by the Arkansas
History Commission lists his unit as Company C,. 1st Georgia Infantry
Regiment. It also indicates that his pension application was rejected.
(Perhaps he had too many assets). A gg grandson of John Marion's, who
is a Civil War re-enactor, insists that John Marion was a Corporal in
Company C, 1st Virginia Volunteer Infantry, nicknamed the "Big Goose",
and not the Georgia Regulars.
A copy of a letter written by John Marion's grand daughter, Mollie
Childress, in which she describes John's mother praying during the
Battle of Chickamauga for the safety of her son. The letter indicates
that John was captured during the battle and held prisoner until the end
of the war. The Childress plantation was located at Pond Spring, Walker
County, Georgia, which was behind the federal lines during that battle.
Family tradition holds (JOHN MARION'S AND HIS BROTHER RICHARD ALEXANDER
CHILDRESS" MOTHER), "SOOKIE",(MORE THAN LIKELY SUSANNAH MASSEY BORN c
1791 MARRIED TO RICHARD CHILDRESS,JR.) captured a Yankee" during that
battle. The unfortunate trooper was apparently rummaging for food in
either a corn crib or root cellar (depending on the version of the story
told) when she crept up on him and locked the door on him. Confederate
soldiers later took him away.
John's brother(RICHARD ALEXANDER CHILDRESS) and his first cousin
(RICHARD ALEXANDER CHILDRESS) both enlisted in Company I, 60th Regiment,
Georgia Volunteer Infantry on May 6, 1862. As they both had exactly the
same name, company muster rolls distinguished between them as Sr. and
Jr. based on their respective ages. On July 19, 1862, John Marion's
brother(RICHARD ALEXANDER CHILDRESS) was admitted to General Hospital,
Howard's Grove, Richmond, Virginia, suffering from a gun shot wound. He
died the next day. His first cousin(RICHARD ALEXANDER CHILDRESS) died
the next month on August 15, 1862, near Lovingston, Virginia, as a
result of typhoid fever.

25. Moses1 Gowen (Agnes, Edward1, William1, Michael1, John1), born 1742,
may have been the unnamed child born to Agnes Gowen in Louisa County in
January 1743. He was called "Moses Going, mulatto" in his February 1761
to March 1762 account with Archibald Ingram, George Kipper, & Co. of
Albemarle County [Weisiger, Albemarle County Court Papers, 23]. He was a
taxable in the 1770 Trinity Parish, Louisa County household of John Fox
and in his own household in 1772 [Davis, Louisa County Tithables, 25,

January 1777, and he and his wife Agnes sold this land six months later
on 9 June 1777 [DB E:14, 156]. On 14 July 1777 he, Joshua Going and
Charles Sprouse, Sr., were charged by the Louisa County court with hog
stealing, but the sheriff was unable to arrest them because they were in
hiding. The court ordered the sheriff to summon a posse to arrest them
[Orders 1774-82, 171]. He was probably deceased by 1787 when Agnes was
taxable on one tithe, 2 horses, and 6 cattle in Henrico County
[Schreiner-Yantis, 1787 Census, 1073]. Their children were
i. Anne2, born 1763, "of lawful age daughter of Agnes Goine," married

Agnes1 Going (Philip2, Christopher1, Michael1), born say 1725, was
living in Louisa County on 10 October 1743 when she sued Gilbert Gibson
for 3 pounds currency for services done on a contract. On 9 January
1743/4 the court ordered that she receive twenty-five lashes on her bare
back for having an illegitimate child. She bound her son Joseph and
daughter Sarah Going to James Bunch by 28 November 1759 Fredericksville
Parish indenture [Davis, Fredericksville Parish Vestry Book, 29]. On 9
September 1766 she made a deposition in George Gibson's suit against his
step-mother Sarah Gibson. On 14 May 1770 the court ordered the
churchwardens of Trinity Parish to bind out all her children under
twenty-one years except the youngest. On 12 February 1776 she complained
to the court about the treatment her son Sherod was receiving from his
master William Phillips [Orders 1742-8, 82, 91, 92, 95; 1766-74, 20;
1766-72, 379; 1774-82, 140, 142]. She was taxable in Fredericksville

Louisa County court by consent of the parties on 11 April 1774. She was
the mother of Amey Going who was bound apprentice by the churchwardens
of Trinity Parish, Louisa County, on 9 January 1775 [Orders 1774-82, 10,

2. The name Mihill Gowen appears like Mihill Gowree in the 1668
patent, but the 11 September 1717 inquisition refers to the same land as
belonging to Mihil Goen / Michael Gowen
===========================

Members of the Gowen family in Virginia were
Agnes1, born 1725.
1 i. Michael1, born 1635.
1. Michael1 Gowen, born 1635, was the "negro" servant of Christopher
Stafford who gave him his freedom by his 18 January 1654 York County
will after four years of service. Accordingly, Stafford's sister, Anne
Barnehouse, discharged "Mihill Gowen" from her service on 25 October
1657, and she gave him his child William, born of her "negro Prossa"
[DWO 3:16]. Since nothing further is said of Prossa, she probably
remained a slave. If she and Michael had any more children, they too
would have been slaves. Perhaps Michael married a free woman - most
likely white since most branches of the family were very light skinned.
Also, there may not have been any eligible free African American women
in York County at that time.
He patented "30 or 40 acres" in Merchants Hundred Parish in James City
County on 8 February 1668 and died before 11 September 1717 when this
land was mentioned again in James City County records: It appears that
Mihil Goen late of the said County of Jas. City dyed seized of 30 or 40
acres [Duvall, James City County, 42, 78].
ii. Philip1, born 1650, called "Phillip Cowen a Negro" when he
petitioned the Governor and Council of State for his freedom. He was the
servant of Amye Beazleye whose 9 April 1664 will stated that he was to
be free and receive three barrels of corn and a suit of clothes after
serving her cousin, Humphrey Stafford, for eight years. Stafford sold
the remaining years of his indenture to Charles Lucas who forced Philip
to acknowledge an indenture for twenty years before the Warwick County
court [Colonial Papers, Library of Virginia microfilm, p.19, fol. 2]. On
16 June 1675 he was called "Philip Gowen negro Serving Mr. Jno Lucas"
when the court ordered that his indenture in Warwick County was invalid,
that Philip was free, and that he should be paid three barrels of corn
according to Mrs. Amye Beazleye's will [McIlwaine, Minutes of the
Council, 411]. He may have been identical to Philip Gawen who was listed
in the quit rent roll for James City County with 50 acres in 1704 [VMHB
XXI:220].
Christopher1 Gowen (Michael1), born 1658, may have been named for
Christopher Stafford, Michael1 Gowen's master. Christopher and his wife
Anne Gowen were living in Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County, in January
1679 when their son Michael was born [Wynn, Abingdon Parish, Gloucester
County, Register, 319]. Their children were
Philip2 Gowen (Christopher1, Michael1), born 1685, was living in New
Kent County on 4 July 1702 [Bockstruck, Virginia's Colonial Soldiers,

William1 Gowen (Michael1), born 25 August 1655, son of Prossa, was
baptized by Mr. Edward Johnson on 25 September 1655 [York County DWO
3:16]. He received a grant for land in Charles City County on 20 April
1687 [Patents 7:58]. He may have been the father of
Edward1 Gowen (William1, Michael1), born 1681, was taxable on 150 acres
in Kingston Parish, Gloucester County, in 1704 [Smith, Quit Rents of
Virginia, 1704, 37]. He may have been the father of
Edward2 Goeing (Edward1, William1, Michael1), born say 1700, was sued by
Francis Tyree for a debt of 450 pounds of tobacco in Charles City County
in August 1737. He sold land by deed he acknowledged in court in Charles
City County in May 1746 [Orders 1737-51, 16, 409].
x. Moses3, born 1743, testified in Henry County court on 27 April 1780
that he had served as a soldier in Captain James Gunn's Company in
Colonel Byrd's Regiment in 1760 (in the French and Indian War) but had
not received bounty land. On 28 March 1783 he owned land on both sides
of the North Mayo River when the Henry County court allowed him to build
a water grist mill on it [Orders 1778-82, 86; 1782-5, 75]. He was
taxable in Henry County from 1782 to 1786, charged with 2 tithes in 1785
and 1786 [Personal Property Tax Lists, 1782-1830, frames 18, 38, 87,

South Carolina, circa 1791, the birth date of Obediah, Childress, Sr.,
whom we believe to be the son of William Childress, died 1834 in
Jefferson County, Alabama. I know the family did migrate through
Tennessee, ultimately ending up in Ackerman, Mississippi, which is about
60 miles south of Lafayette County. Perhaps there is a connection.
Obediah, Sr.'s siblings were, at least, David, Levi and William. This
David was born circa 1800 and married a Mary Graham, according to my
records.

FREE AFRICAN AMERICANS OF VIRGINIA, NORTH CAROLINA SOUTH CAROLINA,
MARYLAND AND DELAWARE
He patented "30 or 40 acres" in Merchants
Hundred Parish in James City County on 8 February 1668 and died before
11 September 1717 when this land was mentioned
again in James City County records: It appears that Mihil Goen late of
the said County of Jas. City dyed seized of 30 or 40 acres [Duvall,
James City County, 42, 78 The name Mihill Gowen appears like Mihill
Gowree in the 1668 patent, but the 11 September 1717 inquisition refers
to the same land as belonging to Mihil Goen / Michael Gowen. He was the
father of iii. Christopher1, born 1658.
He was the father of ii. ?Philip2, born 1685.
Philip2 Gowen (Christopher1, Michael1), born 1685, was living in New
Kent County on 4 July 1702 [Bockstruck, Virginia's Colonial Soldiers,
218]. He was the father of v. David1, born 1727
David1 Going (Philip2, Christopher1, Michael1), born 1727, was indicted
by the Henrico County court on 6 November 1752 for not going to church
and for failing to list his "Mulatto" wife as a tithable. He paid a 5
shilling fine for not going to church but pleaded not guilty to the
other charge. He failed to appear when the case came to trial in April
1753 and was fined 1,000 pounds of tobacco [Minutes 1752-5, 19, 26, 27,
52]. He and his wife Elizabeth sold 100 acres of this land in the fork
of Farrar's Branch adjoining John Harlow, Nathan Dunaway and his own
land to David Barnett on 25 October 1770 [Deeds 1767-74, 260]
He left a 17 March 1803 Henrico County will which was proved on 8 March
1805. He left all to his grandson David Going, reserving to Agatha Going
peaceful possession where she was then living during her lifetime. He
also named grandson John Harlace 4 pounds, left (DAVID) MEREDITH
CHILDERS III a bed and furniture, and named his grandson David Going and
(DAVID MEREDITH CHILDERS JR his executors. His estate was valued at 55
pounds [WB 3:183-4]. He was the father of i. Agnes born 1748
Agnes Going, born 1748, was taxable on (her son?) John Going's tithe and
2 horses in the upper district of Henrico County from 1787 to 1791
[Personal Property Tax List 1782-1814, frames 124, 143, 195, 217, 271].
She was taxable on 97 acres in the upper district of Henrico County from
1799 to 1807 [Land Tax List 1799-1816]. Her children married white and
were considered white. She was apparently the mother of

Harmon who came from Newberry County (S. C.)had one daughter, Cerena who
married Merridith Childress and had the following children: David,
Samuel, Annis, Robert Smith, John Wesley, Levi Harmon, and Caroline
Childress."
Emma Childress was the daughter of Meredith and Louisa McGraw Childress.
She was born about 1848. In the 1850 census, she was age 2 and living
with Louisa, Louisa's parents, and Louisa's children Rebecca Elizabeth
White and George W. White. In 1860 Emma, age 12, was living with Louisa

FREE AFRICAN AMERICANS OF VIRGINIA, NORTH CAROLINA SOUTH CAROLINA,
MARYLAND AND DELAWARE

She was taxable on 97 acres in the upper district of Henrico County from

were considered white. She was apparently the mother of

John Goin Gowen GUYNES2431, 2432, 2433 was born Abt. 1615 in Angola2434,
2435, and died date unknown. He married Margaret Cornish.
The saga of the Gowen or Goin family, the largest branch in the
Melungeon family tree, begins with a lovers' triangle in early colonial
Virginia. African-American John Gowen was the servant of an Englishman
named William Evans in Elizabeth City, Virginia. John Gowen had first
arrived in Virginia prior to 1630. John, probably born in Angola about
1615, was possibly one of a number of prisoners taken from a captured
Portuguese slave ship off the coast of Angola in 1628, by the English
pirate Arthur Guy. That year Captain Guy traded his stolen Angolan
slaves in Jamestown, Virginia for tobacco. Theplantation owner William
Evans, as was the custom, offered a bid for Gowen in Jamestown and John
was indentured for about the usual term of 7-10 years.
FIRST GENERATION circa 1615: John GOWEN (or GEAWEEN)
Evans' neighbor was the planter Robert Sheppard. Lt. Sheppard was one of
the ranking leaders of the Virginia colony, serving in the Virginia
House of Burgess; North America's oldest continually existing
legislature. Sheppard had a Negro servant girl named Margaret Cornish.
John Gowen married Margaret and they had a son in 1635 whom they named
Michael Gowen. Margaret remained
bound to the household of Lt. Sheppard with her son Michael, while John
Gowenworked for Evans and eventually earned release from his indenture
and became North America's first recorded free black man.
Next to the plantations of Evans and Sheppard lived another white
planter named Robert Sweat (sometimes spelled "Sweet"). Margaret fell in
love with Sweat and she became pregnant with his child in late 1640. The
affair was exposed and she and the white man Sweat, were brought before
the court. The two were judged guilty of the charges and Virginia court
records contain the
sentence handed down on October 17, 1640.
"Whereas Robert Sweat hath begotten with child a negro woman servant
belonging unto Lieutenant Sheppard, the court hath therefore ordered
that the said negro woman shall be whipt at the whipping post and the
said Sweat shall tomorrow in the forenoon do public penance for his
offence at James City church in the time of divine service according to
the laws of England in that
case provided."
Within 5 months of the sentencing of his wife and Robert Sweat, the
African-American John Gowen petitioned the court for the freedom of the
child he and Margaret had produced five years earlier. The date of his
suit coincides with the time Margaret would have been showing the
pregnancy of her illegitimate child by Sweat.
March 31, 1641-Suit of John Gowen:
"Whereas it appeareth to the court that John Gowen, being a negro
servant unto William Evans, was permitted by his said
master to keep hogs and make the best benefit thereof to himself
provided that the said Evans might have half the increase which was
accordingly rendered unto him by the said negro and the other half
reserved for his own benefit: And whereas the said negro
having a young child of a negro woman belonging to Lt. Robert Sheppard
which he desired should be made a Christian and be taught and exercised
in the church of England, by reason whereof he, the said negro did for
his said child purchase its freedom
of Lt. Sheppard with the good liking and consent of Tho: Gooman's
overseer as by the deposition of the said Sheppard and Evans
appeareth, the court hath therefore ordered that the child shall be free
from the said Evans or his assigns and to be and remain at the disposing
and education of the said Gowen and the child's godfather who
undertaketh to see it brought up in the Christian religion as aforesaid."
In time John Gowen remarried and had at least one other son named Philip
born about 1650. Margaret bore Robert Sweat's
child and later bore another child out of wedlock, surnamed Cornish.
Later, Margaret Cornish was freed, yet she lived the
rest of her days on a section of Sheppard's estate called 'Hog Island'.
The names of Gowen, Sweat, and Cornish are borne by Melungeon
descendants to this day.
John Goin Gowen GUYNES: Naturalization: 31 Mar 1641, Petitioned court
for the freedom of Michael Goin Gowen Guynes.
Occupation: 1628, Indentured Slave to William Evans of Jamestown, VA.

1. +Michael Mihill Gowen GUYNES, b. 1635, Jamestown, Virginia2436,
2437, 2438, d. 11 Sep 1717, James City, Virginia2439, 2440, 2441.
Michael Mihill Gowen GUYNES (b. 1635, d. 11 Sep 1717)
Michael Mihill Gowen GUYNES (son of John Goin Gowen GUYNES and Margaret
Cornish)2744, 2745, 2746, 2747 was born 1635 in Jamestown, Virginia2748,
2749, 2750, and died 11 Sep 1717 in James City, Virginia2751, 2752,
2753. He married (2) Prossa.
Michael, the five year old child of John Gowen and Margaret Cornish, was
removed from his mother and placed in the home of Captain Christopher
Stafford of Virginia in 1641. The African-American youth remained a
servant of the Stafford family until his 18th birthday. Christoper
Stafford had died in the meantime, and his sister, Anne Stafford
Barnhouse, legally held Michael's indenture. Anne Barnhouse also had an
African-American servant girl named "Prossa". While a servant in the
Stafford household, Michael
Gowen had gotten a son by Prossa, and the child was named William Gowen.
In his will, Captain Stafford desired Michael to be freed from servitude
upon his death. His sister carried out his wishes on October 25th, 1657.
In a legal statement, Anne Barnhouse also freed Michael's young two-year
old son William, but she retained the child's mother Prossa, as her
servant, effectively breaking up the family.
"Bee itt known unto all Christian people that whereas Mihill Gowen Negro

John Gowen and his immediate family knew how to use the judicial system
of 17th century colonial America. His son Philip Gowen successfully sued
for his freedom on June 16th, 1675 from John Lucas. Lucas was ordered to
provide the "Negro" Phillip with "three Barrels of Corne att the Cropp"
according to the will of Amy Beazley, Gowen's original mistress. Several
African-American
Gowens left court and land documents from 17th century Virginia.
After his release from servitude to the Staffords, Michael quickly
remarried a free white woman in York Co. and had four sons in addition
to William by Prossa. His later sons, William, Daniel, Christopher and
Thomas, born from 1655 to 1660, were described
as "mulatto" in surviving records. These latter branches of Michael's
family quickly became light-skinned in just a few
generations.
Michael Gowen moved to the adjoining Merchants Hundred Parish in James
City Co. and received a land grant of 40 acres in 1668. Michael died in
1708, about 73 years of age
