Hi Greg,
RE: JOSEPH CHILDRESS -
I know this is your branch of Childress, so can I get your opinion? Here is
what Gary and Mark Childress write - (Unless their series has been corrected?)
-
"Notably, the "Scottish Childresses" sailed to VA in 1745 from a Welsh port.
JOHN CHILDRESS's married Powell, OTHER brother, JOSEPH CHILDRESS married MARY
GOOLSBY of Amherst Co., VA, latterly of KANAWA CO, W. VA. MARY (nee Goolsby)
CHILDRESS was the daughter of JAMES GOOLSBY of Amherst CO., VA, son of
STEPHEN GOODLSBY, an adjacent neighbor of JOSEPH and MARY CHILDRESS in Amherst CO.,
VA. MARY was misidentified in the 20th century as MARY FARIS, daughter of
Robert Faris of Henrico Co, VA." -
Mark Childress has stated, that JOHN who married MARJORY POWELL, JOSEPH
CHILDRESS and BENJAMIN CHILDRESS who married ANN JOPLING were brothers.
The ancestry tree provided in Mark & Gary's series, is confused. I don't see
their basis for the ancestry of John Childress (b.1759) as being the grandson
of JOSEPH Childress who they had as having married Sarah Edmondson, then
claiming Sarah later married James Edmondson. That's completely incorrect. I
don't know what source they used, they didn't give one.
Greg, is there anyone in your Joseph Childress lineage who took the Childress
DNA test, if you don't mind telling us? I also value your opinion on the
above, what do you believe? Thanks!

Dear List -
Who were these JOHN CHILDRESS on the PEDLAR RIVER? How many JOHN CHILDRESS
on the Pedlar were they? Was one of them JOHN CHILDRESS who left Amherst
County, VA by 1786 for Burke CO, NC, Wilkes Co, NC and then Knox CO, TN? Lets take
a look at the questions, comments and sources -
1. SOURCE- CHILDRESS-List archives - May 12, 1999, Ann B. Chambless, Jackson
Cty Historical Association - "JOHN CHILDRESS PATENT IN AMHERST CO, VA." -
JOHN CHILDRESS PATENT: Amherst County, VA, 320 ACRES on both sides of PEDLAR
RIVER, Amherst CO, VA, PATENTS E, 1780-1781, page 232. When was this 320
acres sold by JOHN CHILDRESS and to whom?
COMMENT - There was NO answer to the question, has anyone seen an answer to
this question yet?
2. SOURCE - JOHN CHILDRESS (1759-1849), md. ELIZABETH LINDSAY, Mark and Gary
Childress, Rights reserved (c) 1005, Series 1 No.1. - References to PEDLAR
RIVER -
A) The paternal gr grandparent of JOHN CHILDRESS (md. LINDSAY) was JOHN
CHILDRESS, SR., etc, dying after 1775, likely at the home of grandson JOHN
CHILDRESS (md. POWELL) on the JAMES EDMONDSON plantation, UPPER PEDLAR RIVER, BLUE
RIDGE MTS., AMHERST CO., VA. - COMMENT - I've seen no proven sources for the
assumption that father and son lived ON the James Edmondson property in Amherst.
B) 1783 Amherst Co, VA Tax List - One by the name of JOHN CHILDRESS, head of
household, with 9. - - 1785 Tax List - Three adult's named JOHN CHILDRESS
(Cheldress). After 1785, there were TWO by the name of JOHN CHILDRESS as head of
household - JOHN born 1759 had migrated to Burke Co, NC along with the
Edmondsons.
C) CFA LAND RECORDS - PEDLAR RIVER -
1780 - JOHN, both sides of the PEDLAR RIVER -
1787 - JOHN on south side and joining PEDLAR RIVER on the BLUE RIDGE,
COMMENT - By 1787, JOHN CHILDRESS born 1759 no longer lives in Amherst Co,
VA, he appears in WILKES CO, NC, 1787, Pg 172, Captain Thomas Farguson's
District - 3 Males - 3 Females -
1796 - JOHN and PRISCILLA, north side of PEDLAR, also on south side of PEDLAR
adjacent to HENRY CHILDERS (aka Childress) on top of the BLUE RIDGE - (below)
-
1796 - JOHN to Wiatt STARK, 125 acres South side of PEDLAR LINE, HENRY
CHILDERS to BLUE RIDGE-
1796 - JOHN to Jos McAdams, north side PEDDLER, acknowledged by JOHN
CHILDRESS wife PRICILLA (her maiden name was Stinnett).
1796 - JOHN to JOHN HENDERSON 90 acres both sides of PEDLAR -
1804 - JOHN SR and PRISCILLA to JOHN, JR. on lines of HENRY CHILDERS and
MOSES SWEENEY.
1807 - JOHN and SARAH above description.
D) ANCESTRY TREE of JOHN CHILDRESS (1759 - 1849) From the Mark & Gary
Childress series No 1. -
1JOHN CHILDRESS - aged 45 on the "1745 Crossing" -
2JOSEPH CHILDRESS - aged 25 on the "1745 Crossing" married SARAH who married
2nd JAMES EDMONDSON - (Proven to be in error) -
3JOHN CHILDRESS - aged 5 on the "1745 Crossing" married MARJORY POWELL -
4JOHN CHILDRESS - Rev. Soldier, born 1759 Albemarle Co, VA - married
Elizabeth LINDSAY (John was the son-in-law of JAMES EDMONDSON and his wife, SARAH [see
#2 above] -
What does all of these references tell us? There is still no proven ancestry
for 4JOHN CHILDRESS. I found no reference to a Marjory Powell as the
daughter of Col. Thomas Powell as presented in the series by Gary and Mark Childress.
If John did marry Marjory, I would really like to see a reference with
sources. Did John Childress actually married a LINDSAY? The name LINDSAY was
popular among the COLEMANS, whose ancestry began with ROBERT COLEMAN as the
immigrant ancestor, he came from England to VA on a headright, 1638, according to
Sherri Nichol's message 385, Coleman genforum - "John Lindsey Coleman" - Robert
Coleman, immigrant's great grandson was ROBERT COLEMAN who married ELIZABETH
LINDSAY (aka Lindsey) -
JOSEPH CHILDRESS of Amherst Co, VA had daughter JUDITH CHILDRESS born 1773
married SAMUEL COLEMAN 1794. Her sister, NANCY ANNE CHILDRESS born 1773 married
JAMES COLEMAN. Their sister, ELIZABETH CHILDRESS born 1765c married BENJAMIN
SANDIDGE. And their brother, JESSE CHILDRESS, born 1767c married ANNE
SANDIDGE.
If you recall, JOHN CHILDRESS son, ROBERT CHILDRESS 2nd wife, KESIAH CARTER'S
mother was ELIZABETH SANDIDGE who married PETER CARTER. Peter was son of
SOLOMON and MARY ANN CHILDRESS CARTER.. Mary Ann being the daughter of ABRAHAM
CHILDRESS lll and his wife, ELIZABETH CANNON. Could the name LINDSAY, namesake
for some of those in the JOHN CHILDRESS (born 1759) ancestry have come by way
of the SANDIDGE - COLEMAN connection, rather then through a LINDSAY marriage?
Just like the namesake of CREED CHILDRESS (brother or Mary Ann Childress
Carter Goodrich) having gone down through the JOHN CHILDRESS (born 1759)
descendants, is this a possibility? Naming patterns are one of the best clues we have
in our family research.
What do you know about those above? Any comments or idea's?

Dear List,
During March 2005, Dr. Joseph Childress published to the list - "JOHN
CHILDRESS (1759-1849), md. ELIZABETH LINDSAY" - Mark Childress & Gary Childress,
Rights reserved (c) 2005, Series 1 No. 1. - Please see the archives of rootsweb.
I've been reading the series again, plus the lawsuit between the children of
John Childress (to follow). I think certain parts of the article plus other
material should be mentioned due to some of the content- See what the authors
wrote below -
"The siblings of JOHN CHILDRESS (m. LINDSAY) were younger brother WILLIAM
CHILDRESS (thereafter "the Silent," for the paucity of records appertaining), a
[prb] shoemaker in Knoxville, Knox Co., Tenn., latterly of Anderson Co., then
Campbell Co., Tenn. and sister MARY EASTON, of the "Scuffletown" district of
Knoxville, Knox Co., TN. That these were his only siblings is consistent with
the 1783 and 1785 census of Amherst Co., Virginia and 19th Century oral
histories within the family." -
As you can read, the authors tell us that they discovered three siblings of
their ancestor, John Childress, that being William, John and a sister named
Mary who apparently married an Easton. What's confusing to me is that the
lawsuit in 1848/9 in Knox County, names the adult children of John Childress, their
names and where they resided and the details match John's purported brothers.
Then I read a website (to follow) and it has the history of the Alden family
of which everyone has heard of from the chronicles of the Mayflower. I'm also
familiar with the Hinds, having discovered that they descend from Lucy Thomas
Neville Childress, last wife of Abraham Childress lll and of whom was the
father of Mary Ann, who married Solomon Carter from my previous messages to the
list, that she was the ancestor of Kesiah Carter who married John Childresses
son, Robert Childress. If that were not enough, Lucy Childress, last wife of
Abraham lll had a son named Cornelious Thomas, he was the ancestor of a Hinds, co
nnecting this family with that of John Childress (1759-1849). SEE -
CHILDRESS, ROBERT v. BETSY HYNDS, Lawsuit Packet #512, Knox CO, TN Chancery
Court filed 17 August 1849, Lawsuit in Knox CO, TN, publication: Microfilm Reel
11, Chancery Court Cases 511-517 -
In the lawsuit, the names of the children of JOHN CHILDRESS (1759-1849) are,
along with heirs and heirs of deceased children - Those who stated, JOHN
CHILDRESS as their ancestor, who had died 11 January 1848 and the three in question
were -
JOHN CHILDRESS of Anderson CO, TN,. WILLIAM CHILDRESS of Campbell Co, TN -
There were among the siblings, MARY ANN [POLLY] CHILDRESS, deceased wife of,
Benjamin HINDS. Polly's sister, whose named above in the lawsuit was ELIZABETH
[Betsy] CHILDRESS who married Benjamin HINDS, the sisters married brothers.
You might ask, why would I mention the lawsuit? The two brothers, WILLIAM
and JOHN lived in the exact location of TN where the authors claim John
Childresses brother's lived and were named. The only one missing would be who they
said was MARY [Childress] EASTON. Could this be in error on their part? See the
following -
"ALDEN KINDRED OF AMERICA, INC." - DESCENDANTS OF JOHN ALDEN and PRISCILLA
MULLINS, 7th GENERATION -
#13816 - PHEBE BYRAM (Edward m. Abigal Alden - Ebenezer) married Thomas RULE
born 1761 PA and had -
#28439 - EDWARD RULE, born 1785 PA, died 1827 KY married 1815, MARY EASTON**
born 1785 -
Could the above Mary Easton** be one mentioned by Gary and Mark Childress?
Mary would be younger then a sister to JOHN CHILDRESS who was born 1759, but
this MARY EASTON does have a connection. SEE from the website above -
#13826 - HULDA BYRAM (Ebenezer) married LEVI HINDS (Joseph) 1789 Knox CO, TN
- they lived in Madison Co, AL - and had issue among others -
#28464 - BENJAMIN HINDS born 1788 died 1829 AK, married 1809 MARY [POLLY]
CHILDRESS, daughter of - JOHN CHILDRESS (1759-1849) -
#28466 - BYRAM HINDS, brother to the above, born 1792, died 1875 married 1813
to ELIZABETH (BETSEY) CHILDRESS, daughter of - JOHN CHILDRESS (1759-1849),
sister to the above.
When I read the series by Gary & Mark, I knew how much work it took to
assemble this type of project, I've done it myself, having had family manuscripts
published. I applaud them for the effort. Nevertheless, there have been errors
in their series. We all have a responsibility to be as accurate as possible
when we publish genealogical work on a public forum, such as this one. As a
Childress, I do feel a responsibility to point out mistakes, especially if they are
not corrected and I haven't seen the corrections by Gary and Mark.
When I read a series like their's, I want to see proven sources or at least
more then what they have claimed. I have read the next part, which were deeds.
That's great, however, the deeds don't explain the background of their
series. We have to give sources for an ancestry tree, the tree they provided for
John Childress was in error. I have not seen a corrected version as yet, have
any of you? I do know CFA Spring Newsletter (paper) did have a correction on
Sarah Dyer Hayes Edmondson and that she did NOT marry Joseph Childress, but was
instead the mother-in-law of John Childress (1759-1849) who married the
Edmondson daughter.
If their ancestry tree of - 1JOHN, b.1700 to 2JOSEPH married. Sarah Edmondson
to 3JOHN m. Marjory Powell to 4JOHN born 1759 married Elizabeth Lindsay,
their source being - 19th Century oral histories of the Knox CO, TN Childresses,
the paternal gr gr grandparents of John Childress married Lindsay, were not on
the 1745 voyage to Virginia. and additionally they say - The Childresses who
arrived in 1745 were genetically unrelated to the Childress-Childers of
pre-1745 Virginia; sharing NO common male ancestor. - - Clearly, Gary and Mark's
(John Childress) family does have an abundance of genetic links (female's) to
Abraham Childress lll, more then any other Childress group I've researched so
far, and he was here before 1745.

Hello
Is anyone on the list kin to George Campbell Childress born Jan 8, 1804? His parents were John Campbell Childress and Elizabeth Robertson.
I was just curious. Texas independence was March 2 and Texas Highways magazine had an article on it. George C Childress was the chairman of the committee who wrote the declaration of independence for Texas.
Several year ago I took my grandchildren to Washington on the Brazos to help them with their Texas History. I saw the statue of George C Childress, but at the time I was not doing research on my Childress. Now I need to go back there and see it again.
His death was a tragedy of his own doing. His uncle was Sterling C Robertson
Just wondered if anyone on the list has him in their family history?
