The original image for 1800 Rockingham Co, NC Census is below - The INDEX
said - "RUFUS Childras" - I don't agree with the abstract for the Index. It says
- REPS, rather then RUFUS - You be the judge. I have not heard of a REPS
Childress (Childras) in Rockingham. I'm very familiar with the name REPS as in
the JONES who connect by marriage to Childress and the descendants named REPS,
but not in this part of NC and not during 1800. Has anyone else? Know which
one he is? TN?

Dear List,
The Mecklenburg County, VA Census now has an INDEX online. Please see below.
I have copies of both (1820 & 1830) original census, plus abstracts if
anyone needs a look up.
The two "Childres" (Childress) who are in the index are - WILLIAM CHILDRESS
and his brother, JESSE CHILDRESS. Both sons of Benedict (aka Richard)
Childress (Inventory, 1794 Charlotte Co, VA and grandson of JEREMIAH Childress, SR)
and wife, JANE (aka Jean). JANE married 2nd, Thomas HAMBLIN and she is in the
census as JANE HAMLIN (Hamblin). WILLIAM Childress born 1785 VA. married NANCY
WILKERSON. JESSE Childress, born 1792, married Lucy JACKSON. William also
appears in the 1830 Census as does Jesse. By 1839c, William and Nancy
Wilkerson Childress, plus several or more of their children migrated to Caldwell Co,
KY. William was a soldier in the War of 1812 out of VA, I have his original
signature of William, on his bounty land application. Jesse Childress with wife
Lucy migrated to Knox Co, TN for several years before migrating to KY.
William Childress, SR. also is in the 1840-60 Caldwell Co, KY Census, he died 1865.
William and Nancy Wilkerson Childress are my 3rd great grandparents.

Cody,
You asked about the books I referenced? I've contacted Jo Ann Childers,
author of one of them, she asks that you email her - the address is -
Bob265617(a)aol.com -
Jo Ann is was also the publisher of "Clearinghouse" which was a continuance
of "Childress Chatter" of which Molly Reigard published and was Editor.

Hi Cody,
I don't know if their still in print or not. There is also a
Childers-Childress Will Book, I have that one to. I'll check it out for you, just look for the
message. In the meantime, do you need a look up from those two books? I can
do that for you, no problem.

do you have specific info on John Vaulton Childress? Since he married in VA,
it has always been my feeling that he was born there as well. However,
wouldn't 1775 make him a little old to be fathering a child in 1817? Could
you give me the source info for John & Josiah's births?

Lynnton -
I know your asking about the info on the website, but you had emailed me (on
the email address I use for genforum), about VAULTON and I was just about to
find my notes. I may have already replied to Childers-List or maybe not!
In the meantime, you have Vaulton as being born 1775 and his son as being
born 1817, you said Vaulton might be to old to have fathered a son born 1817? As
I see it, that's aged 42 for Vaulton. I don't think that's to old to have
fathered a large family. Due to the marriage date (see below) I would have to
assume that the children born after that date were born in TN, unless Vaulton
and his wife traveled to VA for a visit and she had her child there.
I don't know how far along you are in your research on Vaulton, but have you
checked ALL the Giles County, TN census which survived? You need to know WHO
was in Giles County at the same time as Vaulton. This would give you a lead
on who perhaps was related to Vaulton or perhaps even his father, uncle, etc.
I have a census book for TN prepared by Molly Reigard, it goes from 1810
(those that survived) to 1850 for Childers and Childress (and various spellings).
I also have, "Childers / Childress Tennessee Records, 1780-1900" prepared by
Jo Ann Childers. In both those books, your VAULTON is there, but his surname
was spelt in both of them as "Childress". Molly Reigard in particular was very
careful to spell the name as she found it in the original records. Molly was
editor and publisher of "Childress Chatter". Molly is deceased. Jo Ann
Childers all surviving materials from "Childress Chatter". I highly recommend
both books.
In the 1820 TN Census, there were only two adult males who were head of their
household, VAULTON CHILDRESS and ROBERT L. CHILDRESS. Both of them were over
45 years old. VAULTON's wife shows as between 26-45 years old - their
household is large. I have a marriage for POLLY TAYLOR to VAULTON CHILDRESS,
December 19, 1804 Campbell County, VA. I am not sure who ROBERT L. CHILDRESS is,
anyone? I do know that JOHN CHILDRESS born Dec. 1759 had a son named ROBERT
LINDSEY CHILDRESS. Checking the 1820 Census for TN, there was only ONE by the
name of ROBERT and that was ROBERT L. CHILDRESS of Giles CO, TN.
I'll be happy to list all those in GIles Co, TN for you. Just let me know
through a message to this list.

ELISHA4 BREEDING (SPENCER R.3, JOHN2, BRYANT1) (#2589) was born
in VA 1791. He was born in either Rockingham, or Franklin County, Va.
Some researchers say he was born in 1788, others in 1791. ELISHA died
1863 in Breeding Creek, Knott Co, KY, at 72 years of age. Elisha was
shot in the back (murdered) by Confederate guerrillas. His body was
interred in Breeding Creek, Knott Co, KY. They buried him 1-1/2 miles
down Breeding's Creek, near his home.
He married three times. He married PAULINA CHILDRESS in VA,
circa 1818. (PAULINA CHILDRESS is #2615.) He married MALINDA S. STAMPER
in Perry Co, KY, 29 Aug 1833. Per Index, Perry County, Kentucky
Marriages - 1821-1846 (MALINDA S. STAMPER is #2619.) MALINDA was the
daughter of WILLIAM STAMPER and EMILY "POLLY" . When they married she
must have been 14 or 15 years old and he was 42 or 43. She had a cancer
on her hand and her grandson rode a horse from Boonville, Owsley County,
Kentucky, to Breeding's Creek and took her hand off. He was Dr. Sam
Breeding. Carl Breeding said he talked to two men who saw him perform
the operation. They were Wesley Breeding and Jasper Hale. A cancer
finally killed her. It came on the end of her nose. She made her home
with her son George 'Pud' in 1880. She died on May 18, 1894.
He married UNKNOWN CHILDRESS. (UNKNOWN CHILDRESS is #2614.)
It is generally believed he married two Childress women who were
sisters. When he married the 2nd he moved from Altrap, Russell County,
Va to what is now Knott County, Kentucky. They settled on a creek now
known as Breeding's Creek. They came May 18, 1816. Elisha was 75 or 76
when the Confederate guerrillas of the Civil War came into his home and
took him to the mouth of the shop hollow at the bottom of the hill
between Knott and Letcher Counties, near where the Highway No. 15
crosses the hill. He was shot in the back, then the family was allowed
to haul him home on a sled. The guerrillas took most of the family's
food supplies. Elisha had thrown his picket book near a gate and it was
later found.
Elisha Breeding. He was born in 1788, and married a Miss Childress, who
soon died, He then married her sister, Paulina Childress. They lived in
Artrip, Russell County, Virginia, until the spring of 1816, when they
moved to the present Knott County, Kentucky, settling on a stream now
called Breeding's Creek. Paulina died in 1828 or 1829, and he married
Malinda S. Stamper, a daughter of William and Emily "Polly" Stamper. At
that time Elisha was over forty years old, while Malinda was fourteen -
or maybe fifteen. Elisha seems to have been a lecherous old coot, and is
said to have had three illegitimate children by incest with his own
daughters.
Identity of the members of this band was known. They were: S.
Sexton, A. Amburgey, Steve Sexton, Willy Moore, Francis Amburgey, Willey
Amburgey and Ben Caudill. Elisha's son John and his son-in-law Will
Calhoun later led a group of men who killed every one of them except
Willy Moore. Then three years later, another Elisha Breeding, a son of
Elisha's son Wesley, Killed Willy Moore, left home, and was never heard
from again.

GOWEN/ GOING FAMILY Members of the Gowen family in Virginia were
Michael Gowen, born c1635, was the "negro" servant of Christopher
Stafford who gave him his freedom by his 18 January 1654 York County
will after four years of service. Accordingly, Stafford's sister, Anne
Barnehouse, discharged "Mihill Gowen" from her service on 25 October
1657, and she gave him his child William Gowen, born of her "negro
Prossa" [DWO 3:16]. Since nothing further is said of Prossa, she
probably remained a slave. If she and Michael had any more children,
they too would have been slaves. Perhaps Michael Gowaen married a free
woman - most likely white since most branches of the family were very
light skinned. Also, there may not have been any eligible free African
American women in York County at that time.
He patented "30 or 40 acres" in Merchants Hundred Parish in James City
County on 8 February 1668 and died before 11 September 1717 when this
land was mentioned again in James City County records: It appears that
Mihil Goen late of the said County of Jas. City dyed seized of 30 or 40
acres [Duvall, James City County, 42, 78].His children were
i. William Gowen, born 25 August 1655.
ii. ?Daniel Gowen, born c1657.
iii. ?Christopher Gowen, born c1658.
iv. ?Thomas Gowen, born c1660.
Christopher Gowen (Michael1), born c1658, may have been named for
Christopher Stafford, Michael1 Gowen's master. Christopher and his wife
Anne Gowen were living in Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County, in January
1679 when their son Michael was born [Wynn, Abingdon Parish, Gloucester
County, Register, 319]. Their children were
i. Michael Gowen2, born in January 1679.
ii. ?Philip Gowen2, born 1685.
iii. ?Christopher Gowen2, purchased 150 acres on the north side of the
Roanoke River in Bertie County, North Carolina, on 25 March 1728 [DB
C:23].
Philip2 Gowen (Christopher1, Michael1), born c1685, was living in New
Kent County on 4 July 1702 [Bockstruck, Virginia's Colonial Soldiers,
218].
i. George Gowen1, born 1715.
ii. William Gowen, born 1720,
iii. Edward Gowen, born 1722,
iv. Agnes Gowen1, born 1725.
v. David Gowen1, born 1727.
vi. Philip Gowen 3, born 1740, married Judith Potter
vii. Mary Anne Gowen, born 1742, bound out by the churchwardens of
Southam Parish, Goochland County, to David Thomas in January 1747/8
[Orders 1744-9].
David1 Going/(Gowen) (Philip2, Christopher1, Michael1), born c1727, was
indicted by the Henrico County court on 6 November 1752 for not going to
church and for failing to list his "Mulatto" wife as a tithable. He paid
a 5 shilling fine for not going to church but pleaded not guilty to the
other charge. He failed to appear when the case came to trial in April
1753 and was fined 1,000 pounds of tobacco [Minutes 1752-5, 19, 26, 27,
52].
He may have been the David Going/Gowen who sued Richard Farris for
trespass, assault and battery in Goochland County but discontinued the
suit on 21 May 1754 [Orders 1750-7, 387]. He and his wife Elizabeth sold
100 acres in Henrico County in the fork of Farrar's Branch adjoining
John Harlow, Nathan Dunaway and his own land to David Barnett on 25
October 1770 [Deeds 1767-74, 260].
He was taxable in the upper district of Henrico County from 1784 to
1790: taxable on a horse and 7 cattle in 1785, exempt from tax on his
person in 1787 [Personal Property Tax List 1782-1814, frames 57, 73,
124, 143, 195, 217; Orders 1784-7, 568].
He was taxable on 100 acres on the headwaters of Chickahominy Swamp in
the upper district of Henrico County from 1799 to 1805 [Land Tax List
1799-1816].
He left a 17 March 1803 Henrico County will which was proved on 8 March
1805. He left all to his grandson David GoingGowen, reserving to Agatha
Going/Gowen peaceful possession where she was then living during her
lifetime. He also named grandson John Harlace 4 pounds, left MEREDITH
CHILDRESS a bed and furniture, and named his grandson David Going/Gowen
and MEREDITH CHILDRESS his executors. His estate was valued at 55 pounds
[WB 3:183-4].
Child: i. Agnes Gowen/Going2, born 1748
Agnes2 Going/Gowen, born c1748, was taxable on (her son?) John
Gowen/Going's tithe and 2 horses in the upper district of Henrico County
from 1787 to 1791 [Personal Property Tax List 1782-1814, frames 124,

She was taxable on 97 acres in the upper district of Henrico County
from 1799 to 1807 [Land Tax List 1799-1816]. Her children married white
and were considered white. She was apparently the mother of

Medal of Honor Recipient Ernest Childers Dies at 87
By Adam Bernstein...Washington Post Staff Writer...Wednesday, March 23,
2005; Page B06
Ernest Childers, 87, a Native American and Army veteran who
received the Medal of Honor for his combat service in Italy during World
War II, died March 17, 2005 at a hospice in Tulsa after strokes. He
lived near Tulsa, Ok. He was a second lieutenant in the 45th Infantry
Division when he received the Medal of Honor, the highest military award
for valor.
Ernest Childers was born Feb. 1, 1918, in Broken Arrow, Okla., and
raised on a farm that was part of his father's original Creek tribal
allotment. He was the third of five sons and the best shot, having been
taught by his father, a Creek Nation lawyer and a great hunter. After
his father died, he was responsible for feeding the family during the
Depression years. His mother gave him one .22-caliber cartridge every
day to kill a rabbit for dinner. "I got to be a very good aim," he told
a Tulsa reporter in 2002. "Because if I missed, we didn't eat."
He graduated from the Chilocco (Okla.) Indian School, where he
boxed and learned mechanics. He joined the Oklahoma National Guard in
1937 to earn extra money, and his unit was activated during World War
II. Remaining in the Army after the war, he later taught jungle training
in Panama and winter training in Alaska before retiring in 1965 as a
lieutenant colonel. A brief stint with the Job Corps program in
Washington ended after he suffered a heart attack. Returning to
Oklahoma, he spoke to students about the emotional costs of war.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Yolanda Childers; three
children and a brother
