Hi Rebecca,
Re: Charlotte Co, VA Childress -
My Childress family were living in Charlotte, the part which was carved from
Lunenburg Co. (VA). Have you been to both Lunenburg and Charlotte County
webpages? They have some really good information there and lookups. I have
posted as much info as I had on Charlotte Co, VA , so please check the archives
of this list. As for the KY records, Kay has also posted a great deal of
data, check her messages to. If I should come across anything in my files,
I'll let you know.

Thomas M. Childress (1835) in Wilkes. NC. - Son (?) of JOHN CHILDRESS,
brother of JOEL CHILDRESS, father of Sarah Childress POLK -
Hi Patrick -
This is long, sorry about that, but there is information I want to share on
this subject.
I haven't gone to the website Kay noted in her message, but, after reading
the information from the letter of Aunt Lizzie (1872), I have some comments,
but first - This Thomas M. Childress in the aunt's letter she said was from
Wilkes Co, NC. I know of three who were in Wilkes Co, NC in 1787-1790 and they
were, JOHN Childress who married Lucretia Edmondson, It is said by Gary and
Mark Childress that this same John married only Elizabeth Lindsey. There was
Mitchell Childress and a Miller Childress, living close to one another, but
not close to John Childress (born 1759, Albemarle Co, VA) who was living
right near his father-in-law, James Edmondson who left the 1792/3 will naming
JOHN Childress as his son-in-law. So, perhaps the JOHN Childress in the letter,
(born 1800) of Wilkes Co, NC was part of the migration to NC. Those of you
who have done NC research, help out here!
Since you say that Samuel Hall Childress of the line of George Campbell
Childress (mentioned in the letter as a cousin of John Childress, father of
Thomas M. Childress, first cousin to Sarah Childress Polk) did submit his DNA and
of which you say has established a definitive genetic connection to the
so-called "Viking Group" which represents the overwhelming majority of ALL
Childress DNA Project participants - Sarah Childress Polk and her line can't be
genetically linked to both groups - Did I get that right? If the aunt's letter
dated 1872 was accurate and her John Childress (born 1800) was a cousin to
George Campbell Childress (John, John), then Joel Childress great grandfather,
as claimed by Gary and Mark Childress in their series (published on the
Childress-list) was NOT part of "the 1745 crossing." Was the connection to JOEL
Childress true? If so, was he related to George Campbell Childress (John,
John, Henry) as stated in the letter? The aunt who wrote the letter, if she was
elderly, most likely was born before the Civil War.
Apparently, Samuel Hall Childress ancestry is JOHN Childress who migrated
from VA to NC and then to Nashville, TN. John Childress was grandfather of
GEORGE CAMPBELL CHILDRESS. George being the son of Judge JOHN CHILDRESS whose
ancestry is well documented.
My thought here is that this is typical of what I've read before. A Gaines
History ["Notable Families of TN"] - which was sent to me from my cousin
(Gaines connection) claimed in this publication, that Joel Childress was a
brother of David Childress of TN and that he was the "UNCLE" of Sarah Childress
Polk. Once again, there is the connection to George Campbell Childress, for
David Childress was brother of JOHN Childress, father of Judge John Childress
who was father of George Campbell Childress. All were descendants of Henry and
Mary Farmer Childers, aka Childress.
David Childress married Leticia GAINES. David was from Lunenburg County
(VA) and mustered out of Charlotte Co, VA during the RW [per his RW pension
application]. He migrated to Sullivan County (TN) and was one of the earlier
settlers there. His family connects by marriage to William Childress who married
Ann BURTON, through the Easleys and there is proof of their ancestry in
their "Easley Bible". The connection is thru the son of WILLIAM CHILDRESS whose
son married a GAINES, this connected the two lines of Childress thru GAINES,
as their children were first cousins. I have the ancestry of one of the
descendants and he was descended from them both, DAVID Childress and WILLIAM
Childress of Sullivan, CO, TN. I had worked with his wife on her husband's
ancestry due to his father's having taken the name of his mother due to the two
families forbidding the two to marry, so the "groom" changed his name!
It is a fact that DAVID CHILDRESS was a son of Henry and Mary Farmer
Childers, aka Childress, of Lunenburg and also Charlotte County, VA which was
carved from Lunenburg. David Childress was the brother of JOHN Childress who
first married Elizabeth Armstrong (her father's will in NC) and then Nancy Ann
Hickman. They migrated to Nashville, TN where they produced a large family,
including, Judge JOHN Childress who married Elizabeth ROBERTSON, the niece of
General James Robertson, founder of Nashville (TN). It is from this Childress
ancestry that GEORGE CAMPBELL CHILDRESS descends.
The writer of the letter (which I haven't seen) says that JOHN CHILDRESS was
brother to JOEL CHILDRESS, who was born 1777 as per his orphan documentation
which came from Surry County (NC) and three court records. JOEL was said in
those records to be the son of BENJAMIN CHILDRESS who was deceased, the year
of the court record was 1789 (proved and provided by Lee Rau). If this JOHN
Childress was brother of JOEL, then his father was BENJAMIN Childress and
most likely Susan as provided by Mrs. Sarah Childress Polk in an 1890 letter
where she said her father's (Joel) mother was named SUSAN and that her sister
was named for her. Once again, if the letter is accurate, then the author's
ancestor would have been Benjamin Childress and his wife Susan.
Another case in point would be our listowner's ancestor, JAMES CHILDRESS who
migrated to Tuscaloosa, AL and was a fine attorney, having come from well
known, prominent family in NC and VA. JOEL Childress asked that JAMES settle
HIS estate, correct me if wrong Bob. Our listowner states, that James was not
a brother of Joel Childress and he has never found any proof to that
statement, even though other's have published that James was a purported brother,
including Adair Lyon Childress, who said "I have found a brother to Joel
Childress named James Childress." Bob said this statement was in error, correct me
Bob if I missed anything?
Another point, even Adair Lyon Childress, brother of John Williams Childress
who published the 1960 memoirs, which are used as a basis for the "tombstone
theory and 1745 crossing" ( per the Childress-List owners, Gary and Mark
Childress), wrote this -
May 17, 1930 -
A contemporary of my great grandfather Joel (Childress), was a prominent man
in Nashville, TN, (Judge) John Childress, but I am unable to make the
connection, he may have been a brother or 1st cousin, but the gap remains unfilled.
The family was a very prominent one, a daughter being the wife of CATRON, a
Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (appointed by the 7th President, Andrew
Jackson) and a son GEORGE CAMPBELL CHILDRESS, etc. - I recall hearing my great
aunt, Mrs. POLK, speak often of Mrs. CATRON such residing in Washington at
the same time. Then I merely assumed they were friends because of their
political situations, but have since concluded they may have been a blood
relationship upon which their intimacy was founded, doubtless third cousins possibly.
- end -
This is just a sampling of the assumption that Sarah Childress Polk was a
relative of Judge John Childress (John) and his son, George Campbell Childress.
Several years ago, in the "Clearinghouse" which was published by Jo Ann
Childers, a Childress descendant, did the research necessary to prove that
George Campbell Childress was NOT George "CLACK" Childress and what his part in
the history of TX was, she also mentioned the "Robertson Colony" of which was
founded by the Robertson's and of whom George Campbell Childress was heavily
involved. The Robertsons were the family who were first settlers in TN and
considered as the founders of Nashville, TN. They were the direct ancestor's
of Judge John Childress (John) wife, who was niece to General James Robertson.
What this all means of course, is that once again, Joel Childress, (now
proven) son of Benjamin Childress and Susan, are suggested to be related to
George Campbell Childress (John, John, Henry) as witnessed by a letter written in
1872 and by the DNA of Samuel Hall Childress which clearly means that his
branch and that of the woman who wrote a letter in 1872 claiming kinship, are
not genetically linked nor related to Mark, Gary and Joseph Childress, but
rather to the overwhelming majority of all the Childers and Childress in the DNA
project. As you said, they cannot be linked to both groups!
Thank you for the DNA information and for bringing this to our attention
Patrick. It's all very, very interesting!

While I find all of the postings by "nomoney6" to be of great genealogical interest, the one that really caught my eye was the following:
**************************** QUOTE ********************************
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/SCSPARTA/2003-08/1059943195
I am a descendant of John Childress brother of Joel Childress father of Sarah Childress Polk. This is a letter written by my Great Aunt to my Grandfather. As Aunt Lizzie (1872) wrote it:
My Great Grandmother was Mary Carpenter. She marrid Henry Sheffield. My Moher's mother was Rebecca Sheffield. She marrid Edward Carnes Rebecca Sheffield came from Ireland. Ellen (her sister) remembers she had an accent.
On Fathers side my great grandmother was Eveline Stone. She married Mr Brooks. My Grandmother was Nancy Brooks. She married John Childress (1800). My Father was Thomas M Childress (1835) in Wilkes. NC.
Martha Carnes Childress was born in Lumpkin County , Georgia. Ellen was born in Dohlonega, Georgia. My father had 3 brothers one named Willis and one of his sisters was naed Sallie.
Mollie her sister was born in Atlanta, Georgia. The rest were born in Missouri. Where they moved on account of Thomas m Childress's health. They moved to Dickson when ellen was about 14 (1876).
President James K Polk's wife, Sarah Childress was a first cousin of Thomas M Childress Her father Joel Childres and John Childress were brothers - so brag about it. Grandpa visited her often when she moved to
Nashville from Washington. He Called her cousin Sadie. "We also have a cousin named George C Childress who was a lawyer. He went to Texas...joined Sam Houston's staff and it is supposed the Declaration of Independence of Texas from Mexico is in his handwriting and he was a figure in writing it." Childress County Texas is named for him. I have had some correspondence with Liz Carpenter, Mrs Johnson's (The president's wife's) secretary. She is a relative of George C Childress. She originally came from Boston. President James K Polk's father came from Ireland. His name was Pollocks - changed it to Polk.
****************************************** UNQUOTE *************************
If the above verbiage ("We also have a cousin named George C. Childress...") enclosed in quotation marks and in bold print is, in fact, a true statement, then the claim that Sarah Polk Childress was associated with the so-called "Scottish Line" (i.e., ancestor of Joseph Howard Childress and Gary Michael Childress, both Childress/Childers DNA participants) likely is relatively straightforward to disprove. The reason for this is that a proven descendent (Samuel Hall Childress) of the line of George Campbell Childress, above, has submitted his DNA, which has established a definitive genetic connection between the Samuel Hall Childress and the so-called "Viking Group" of Childress/Childers males, the group which represents the overwhelming majority of all Childress DNA Project Participant. Sarah Childress Polk and her line can't be genetically linked to both groups!
Any comments or thoughts on the above?

ROBERT CHILDRESS v. BETSY HYNDS, Packet #512 (Knox Co., TN Chancery
Court filed 17 Aug 1849) (Microfilm Reel #11, Chancery Court Cases
511-577): Transcript of Bill of complaint (or Petition) for judicial
sale.
A Bill. ROBT. CHILDRESS and others vs. BETSY HYNDS and others. Filed
August 17/49
To the Honorable Thomas I. Williams Chancellor & sitting in Chancery for
the District composed of Knox, Anderson & Blount [Counties]:
Humbly Complaining herewith unto your Honor Your Orators ROBERT
CHILDRESS of Knox County, LUCY JULIAN & her husband JOHN JULIAN of Knox
County, JOHN CHILDRESS of Anderson County & WILLIAM CHILDRESS of
Campbell County, Ten[nessee] [plead] that about the 11th day of January
1848 [sic] their ancestor, JOHN CHILDRESS, departed this life in Knox
County intestate, and at County Court of Knox County, your Orator ROBERT
CHILDRESS & his son ROBERT CHILDRESS were appointed administrators of
said estate. Said intestate was very little if any indebted at the time
of his death. His personal estate is more than sufficient to pay &
satisfy his debts. Said intestate died seized and possessed of a tract
of land adjoining the lands of John Connor, ROBERT CHILDRESS & LINDSAY
CHILDRESS of Knox County and is estimated to contain 453 [acres] it
being the same place on which said intestate died.
Your Orators state that in addition to your Complainants said intestate
left the following named persons his heirs at law & distributees, to
wit: BETSY HYNDS & her husband BYRAM HYNDS of Marshall County,
Ala[bama], the heirs of LINDSAY CHILDRESS to wit: PHOEBE TINDLE & her
husband JAMES TINDLE of ___ [sic] County, Missouri State. Also POLLY
CHILDRESS who has since intermarried with THOMAS MAY, NANCY CHILDRESS
since intermarried with JAMES DeARMOND, HUGH I. CHILDRESS & MARGARET
CHILDRESS both minors have no guardians. They reside in Knox County,
Tennessee.
Also the heirs of SALLY COX, formerly SALLY CHILDRESS to wit: JACKSON
COX of Anderson County, CURD COX of Knox County, JOHN COX of Claiborne
County, ROBERT COX, MYRA PETRE & her husband WILLIAM PETRE of Knox
County.
Also the heirs of POLLY HYNES, formerly POLLY CHILDRESS to wit: LINDSAY
CHILDRESS HYNDS of Marshall County, Ala., BENJAMIN J. HYNDS, LORRINDA
PHARRIS & her husband SOLOMON PHARRIS, EBENEZER R. HYNDS, WILLIAM
SINGLETON HYNDS, & MARJORY ANN HYNDS, all citizens of Texas.
Also JAMES CHILDRESS of Pulaski County, Missouri.
Your Orators charge that said tract of land is not susceptible of a
division amongst said heirs [and] that to divide it would lessen its
value & in fact ruin the farm; that it is impossible to give spring
water to ___ and your Orators are perfectly satisfied that in order to
[make] an equal division among the several heirs it will be necessary to
sell said tract of land and your Orators believe that all of said heirs
are desirous that said land may be sold and the purchase money divided.
The premises considered. Your Orators pray that the foregoing named
hairs at law of their said intestate [ancestor] may be made Defendants
to this Bill & that guardians ad litem(195) may be appointed as
defendants for the minors and they pray that on the final hearing of
this cause that said land may be sold and the proceeds of said sale may
be divided and if in any thing your Orators have mistaken their relief
they pray for general relief according to the facts in this case.
Boyd & Boyd, AOL [Attorneys of Law], for Complainants } ROBERT CHILDRESS
and others.
(195) A guardian ad litem [Latin, lit. guardian at law] is a special
guardian appointed by the court in which a particular litigation is
pending to represent an infant [one who is under legal age e.g. 21].

I am a descendant of John Childress brother of Joel Childress father of
Sarah Childress Polk. This is a letter written by my Great Aunt to my
Grandfather. As Aunt Lizzie (1872) wrote it:
My Great Grandmother was Mary Carpenter. She marrid Henry Sheffield. My
Moher's mother was Rebecca Sheffield. She marrid Edward Carnes Rebecca
Sheffield came from Ireland. Ellen (her sister) remembers she had an
accent.
On Fathers side my great grandmother was Eveline Stone. She married Mr
Brooks. My Grandmother was Nancy Brooks. She married John Childress
(1800). My Father was Thomas M Childress (1835) in Wilkes. NC.
Martha Carnes Childress was born in Lumpkin County , Georgia. Ellen was
born in Dohlonega, Georgia. My father had 3 brothers one named Willis.
and one of his sisters was naed Sallie.
Mollie her sister was born in Atlanta, Georgia. The rest were born in
Missouri. Where they moved on account of Thomas m Childress's health.
They moved to Dickson when ellen was about 14 (1876).
President James K Polk's wife, Sarah Childress was a first cousin of
Thomas M Childress Her father Joel Childres and John Childress were
brothers. -so brag about it. Grandpa visited her often when she moved to
Nashville from Washington. He Called her cousin Sadie. We also have a
cousin named George C Childress who was a lwyer. He went to Texas
...joined Sam Houston's staff and it is supposed the Declaration of
Independence of Texas from Mexico is in his handwriting and he was a
figure in writing it. Childress County Texas is named for him. I have
had some correspondence with Liz Carpenter, Mrs Johnson's (The
president's wife's) secretary. She is a relative of George C Childress.
She originally came from Boston.
President James K Polk's father came from Ireland. His name was Pollocks
changed it to Polk.

McMinn County Court Minutes 1820-1872
The McMinn County Court Minutes 1820-1872 were originally transcribed by
Reba Boyer. The minutes are not complete by no means as one can see by
the randon page numbers. However, they contain information which is
very significant for genealogical research. I have transcribed her
entries with her personal notes as accurately as possible inserting
capitals, commas, semicolons, and periods as needed to seperate page
numbers, dates, and to make sentences. I have inserted in parenthesis
interpretations of abbreviations and question marks to indicate a
possible error in spelling.
p.239, 7 Dec 1835; Deed from Coleman Daniel & wife Lettitia for Lot No
39 in Knigston (Kingston ?) acknowledged by grantors. Also P of A both
to Saml L. Childress & Henry H. Wiley.
p.491, 6 Nov 1848; Josiah Childers, Jr. is now a citizen of Polk Co. and
he is guilty of begetting a bastard child on Sarah Tenny otherwise Sarah
Blackwell of which she has been delivered in McMinnn.
p.498, Jan 1849; proceedings quashed.

GOWEN/ GOING FAMILY Members of the Gowen family in Virginia were
Michael1 Gowen, born say 1635, was the "negro" servant of Christopher
Stafford who gave him his freedom by his 18 January 1654 York County
will after four years of service. Accordingly, Stafford's sister, Anne
Barnehouse, discharged "Mihill Gowen" from her service on 25 October
1657, and she gave him his child William, born of her "negro Prossa"
[DWO 3:16]. Since nothing further is said of Prossa, she probably
remained a slave. If she and Michael had any more children, they too
would have been slaves. Perhaps Michael married a free woman - most
likely white since most branches of the family were very light skinned.
Also, there may not have been any eligible free African American women
in York County at that time.
He patented "30 or 40 acres" in Merchants Hundred Parish in James City
County on 8 February 1668 and died before 11 September 1717 when this
land was mentioned again in James City County records: It appears that
Mihil Goen late of the said County of Jas. City dyed seized of 30 or 40
acres [Duvall, James City County, 42, 78].His children were
i. William1, born 25 August 1655.
ii. ?Daniel1, born say 1657.
iii. ?Christopher1, born say 1658.
iv. ?Thomas1, born say 1660.
Christopher1 Gowen (Michael1), born say 1658, may have been named for
Christopher Stafford, Michael1 Gowen's master. Christopher and his wife
Anne Gowen were living in Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County, in January
1679 when their son Michael was born [Wynn, Abingdon Parish, Gloucester
County, Register, 319]. Their children were
i. Michael2, born in January 1679.
ii. ?Philip2, born 1685.
iii. ?Christopher2, purchased 150 acres on the north side of the Roanoke
River in Bertie County, North Carolina, on 25 March 1728 [DB C:23].
Philip2 Gowen (Christopher1, Michael1), born say 1685, was living in
New Kent County on 4 July 1702 [Bockstruck, Virginia's Colonial
Soldiers, 218].
i. George1, born 1715.
ii. William, born 1720,
iii. Edward, born 1722,
iv. Agnes1, born 1725.
v. David1, born 1727.
vi. Philip3, born 1740, married Judith Potter
vii. Mary Anne, born 1742, bound out by the churchwardens of Southam
Parish, Goochland County, to David Thomas in January 1747/8 [Orders
1744-9].
David1 Going (Philip2, Christopher1, Michael1), born say 1727, was
indicted by the Henrico County court on 6 November 1752 for not going to
church and for failing to list his "Mulatto" wife as a tithable. He paid
a 5 shilling fine for not going to church but pleaded not guilty to the
other charge. He failed to appear when the case came to trial in April
1753 and was fined 1,000 pounds of tobacco [Minutes 1752-5, 19, 26, 27,
52]. He may have been the David Going who sued Richard Farris for
trespass, assault and battery in Goochland County but discontinued the

Isaac Cheuvront married first, Catherine Childers (d/o John Childers and
Margaret Yerkey, b. 1808/10, d. Jun 6, 1874, Jackson Co., WVA) m Sept
30, 1830, Harrison Co., WVA (Marriage Bond Vol 4, page 486, performed by
J. Cheuvront, 9/30/1830 Harrison Co Marriage Records, Vol 3, pg 58)
A John Childers married Margaret Yerkey 6 Mar 1801 (Harrison County
Marriage Bonds, Vol. 1, p. 429). John Childers and Margaret, his wife,
are party to a deed in Harrison County (Deed Book Vol. 22, p. 506) which
I believe is dated 1 Nov 1835. Margaret Childers still living in 1835
and must be the mother of any children of John Childers born between
1801 and 1835.
On 17 Feb 1817, a John Childers purchased property on Isaacs Creek from
Jacob and Nancy Bennet (See Harrison County Deeds, Vol. 13, p. 306).
This could not have been John I. Childers as all records indicate that
John I. would have been only age 13 in 1817. There is no record in
Harrison County of this property leaving John Childers. There is,
however, an estate
settlement for John Childers dated 23 Oct 1841 and recorded in Harrison
County, (Vol. 6, p. 36),
On a deed dated and recorded at Harrison County Courthouse 27 Nov 1852
(Harrison County Deeds, Vol. 39, page 160) property on Isaacs Creek
bounded exactly as described in the 17 Feb 1817 deed was granted to
William B. Childers for $44.44 from the following persons: William A.
Perine and Martha, his wife; Elias Yerkey and Elizabeth, his wife; Jesse
G. Cox and Sidney, his wife; Andrew J. Childers and Mary Jane, his wife
(no signature); all of the county of Harrison, State of VA; John J.
Childers and Sarah A., his wife of Doddridge County, VA; Isaac Cheuvront
and Katherine, his wife of Jackson County, VA; Amos D. Sutton and
Allisse, his wife of Pike County, OH (no signature); and Samuel N. Myers
and Sophia, his wife, of Delaware County, OH.
Further research was done on the grantors of the above-described deed
and
the results are as follows:
William A. Perine and Martha, his wife:
(1) Harrison County Marriage Bond, Book 3, page 473, shows a marriage
intended between William Prine, ward of Richard Prine, and Patty
Childers, daughter of John Childers. Bond dated 15 Nov 1822. Marriage
performed by J. Cheuvront 15 Nov 1822 (Marriage Records Vol. 3, p. 11)
(2) Harrison County Deaths, Vol. 1, p.4, shows the death of Martha
Perine, daughter of John and Peggy Childers and wife of William A.
Perine.
Elias Yerkey and Elizabeth, his wife:
Harrison County Death, Vol. 1, p. 175, shows the death of Elizabeth
Yerkey, daughter of Jno. and Margaret Childers.
Jesse G. Cox and Sidney, his wife:
I have a note that Jesse G. Cox and Sidney Childers were married 21 Mar
1839 (Harrison County Marriages Vol. 3, p. 130.) I have no copy of that
marriage bond.
Andrew J. Childers and Mary Jane, his wife:

Harrison County Marriage Bonds, Vol. 4, page 486, shows a marriage
intended between Isaac Cheuvront and Catherine Childers. The bond, dated
29 Sep 1830, is signed by Isaac Cheuvront and John Childers. The
marriage was celebrated
by J. Cheuvront on 30 Sept 1830 (Harrison County Marriage Records, Vol.
3, p. 58)
Amos D. Sutton and Allisse, his wife:
I have a note that Davis "The Settlers of Salem, WV", (page 38 First
Edition), by Susie Davis Nicholson lists a marriage recorded in Harrison
County 11 Feb 1841.
Samuel N. Myers and Sophia, his wife:
Harrison County Marriage Bonds, Vol. 4, p. 110, shows a marriage
intended between Samuel N. Myers and Sefia Childers daughter of John
Childers. The bond was dated 23 Feb 1825 and the marriage solemnized by
Jacob Bennet on 2
Feb 1825 (Harrison County Marriage Records Vol. 3, p. 29)
Conclusions:
Since the Isaacs Creek property was never conveyed from John Childers to
the eight couples listed above, it would appear that they inherited the
property. Further research indicates that in four of the eight couples
where available records list parents, there is a child of John Childers.
Finally, there is evidence that John Childers died before 23 Oct 1841.
(See Harrison County Estate Settlements, Vol. 6, p. 36) Therefore, I
conclude that in each of the eight couples listed on the 1852 deed there
is one child of John Childers. Based on the above evidence, the
following will be listed as children of
John Childers and Margaret Yerkey Childers:
(1) Martha (Patty) Childers
(2) Elizabeth Childers
(3) Sidney Childers
(4) Andrew J. Childers
(5) John J. Childers
(6) Catherine Childers
(7) Alice Childers
(8) Sophia Childers
NOTE: It is very possible that the grantee of the 1852 deed, William B.
Childers, is also a son of John and Margaret Childers, but as yet there
is insufficient evidence to list him definitely.

RE: CARTERS and CHILDRESS and your question? -
Sorry I have no name to address you by, but you should see this is in answer
to your question!
Thank you for taking the time to give more info on Abraham Childress lll and
his family. Any comments, idea's, sources, please feel free to help out
here! As you can see from my earlier message, there was considerable
information to sort thru and to try and make it as simple to follow as possible. I
don't doubt that I had a few errors, due to the bevy of intermarriages between
Abraham Childress lll's children and their marriages and family connections
I've sited. All of what I sited came from a long list of sources, which I
intend to give at the end of what I've researched with the help of knowledgeable
people, along with the archives here in Atlanta. I have a great deal of in
fo on Abraham lll and copies of deeds, abstracts, his will, data on his
children and etc. But, there is only so much time, so I appreciate your sharing
with all of us.
Now, as to your CARTER - CHILDRESS question? I'll quote from the Carter
descendants whom I certainly consider authorities and they are - Dick Zieman
(has his own website, see Carter genforum), David Johnson and Eva Goeken - all
of which have been very helpful and provided answers and documentation to my
questions regarding the CARTER family, especially the "Mary Ann's" and other
issues. If you are familiar with Genforum, I suggest you visit the CARTER
forum and check out the thread on MARY ANN CHILDRESS who married SOLOMON CARTER.
They have excellent sources and documentation. Also thru personal email
correspondence, we put our heads together, I gave them Childress information
and they provided Carter and extended family data, it worked, we came to some
conclusions based on the evidence, time frame and other circumstances. There
is still a ways to go, because Mary Ann Childress Carter was sited in a 1774
Amherst County, VA Court record (provided by Henry Childress (aka Childers)
descendant, Virginia Hanks) as having a "bastard" son named JOHN "CHILDERS"
and he was bound out. She was sited as "Mary Ann Carter, LATE Childers". Mary
Ann CHILDRESS marriage to SOLOMON CARTER was provided by Dick Zieman and by
the ARW Pension Application of their oldest son, WILLIAM CARTER who was born
late in 1760. Those I have named say that MARY ANN married SOLOMON CARTER
before 1760 and most likely, 1759.
As for the child named JOHN born out of wedlock, Mrs. Virginia Hanks did not
have further information, however, Mary Ann had apparent marital problems.
She was living with John Goodrich during the time her husband, Solomon Carter
made his 1786 will in Amherst and he sited her as "living with another man"
- She then married JOHN GOODRICH in 1786 Amherst Co., his will was probated
1804 and she disputed the will, her son, Abraham CARTER was her witness. There
were further court records of which I am privy, which proved to be constant
suits against Carters and Goodrich. A JOHN GOODRICH lived in Amherst during
1785 and in fact, is living near the Childress who were there, one being JOHN
CHILDRESS born 1759 Albemarle Co, who later stated in his ARW Pension that
his family removed to Amherst shortly after he was born, he married as per the
James Edmondson 1793 WILL, Lucreshia Edmondson, later living in WILKES Co,
NC before removal to Knox County, TN. JOHN is the father of ROBERT Childress
who married Kessiah Carter, daughter of PETER Carter and Elizabeth Sandidge,
son of SOLOMON and MARY ANN Childress CARTER.
I do plan on ordering the 1774 Amherst County court (John Childers, Bastard)
record from vital records out of VA, unless I can get a copy here in Atlanta
thru microfilm, either from the GA Archives or LDS.

Dear List -
Most of the seasoned researchers I've been corresponding with, have
concluded that Abraham's daughter, MARY ANN, named CARTER, in her father's 1764
Albemarle County, VA will was the wife of SOLOMON CARTER whose son was PETER
CARTER and his wife, Elizabeth SANDIDGE. Their daughter was KESSIAH CARTER and
she married as the second wife of ROBERT CHILDRESS in 1812 Amherst County, VA,
even though ROBERT was living by that time, in Knox County, TN (by all
accounts). ROBERT is a son of JOHN CHILDRESS who according to his ARW Pension
Papers was born December 1759 in Albemarle County (VA) and shortly thereafter was
living in Amherst County, VA.
According to the series by Mark and Gary Childress (Childress-List owners)
of which there have been two parts so far, the ancestry of their MARY who
married Solomon CARTER was not established. However, that same MARY is MARY ANN
CHILDRESS, daughter of Abraham Childress lll and Elizabeth Cannon.
The CARTER connections began in Henrico County, VA due to the ELLIS family.
In fact, it was the ELLIS family of whom came to be in AMHERST to begin
with. Mary Ann ELLIS married PETER CARTER, the brother of SOLOMON CARTER. In
early Henrico County, VA lived another family, that of ABRAHAM CHILDRESS lll.
There is a very early association with those of whom his children married and
they link back to Henrico County, they also link to other families who
connect Abraham to the TUCKERS, TAYLORS and POWELLS, two families of which were
said to be the families of whom JOHN CHILDRESS born 1759 came from, one MARJORY
POWELL, according to Gary and Mark Childress series.
Those in Amherst who connect to the ABRAHAM CHILDRESS family were JOPLING,
TUCKER, TAYLOR, ELLIS, CARTER, POWELL and also connect to another branch of
CHILDRESS. It was amazing to me how they all fit like a massive, but
complicated puzzle, but a stunning revelation to the puzzle. Here's the beginning -
Abraham Childress lll had a daughter named LUCRETIA CHILDRESS born 1722c
died before 1787, she married MATTHEW TUCKER, January 22, 1748 (Diary of
Preacher Robert Rose). MATTHEW had a brother named, JOHN TUCKER who married RHODA
POWELL** -DRURY could have been another brother to JOHN and MATTHEW, the sons
of JOHN TUCKER born 1683 Prince George Co, VA and he was the son of FRANCIS
TUCKER and his wife MARY.
** [RHODA POWELL who married JOHN TUCKER was the sister of EDMUND POWELL who
married LUCY JOPLING. ANN JOPLING, sister to LUCY and sister-in-law to RH
ODA POWELL TUCKER married BENJAMIN CHILDRESS who left a will dated 1775. So,
ABRAHAM CHILDRESS lll was the ancestor of the TUCKER children of whom were
first cousins to the same POWELLS who married the JOPLINGS and of whom Gary and
Mark Childress claim in their series to be their POWELL ancestors. The
POWELLS and TUCKERS intermarried, were brother and sister-in-laws and their
children were first cousins, as LUCRETIA CHILDRESS was married to MATTHEW TUCKER
whose sister-in-law was RHODA POWELL TUCKER. There was a POWELL -
TUCKER-CHILDRESS connection prior to the Childress series by Mark - Gary Childress.
AS per Gary and Mark Childress series -
"The parents of JOHN CHILDRESS [NOTE, It is believed that JOHN married
LUCRESIA EDMONDSON per her father's 1792/3 WILL]
married LINDSAY, were JOHN CHILDRESS md. MARJORY POWELL and wife MARJORY of
Amherst CO, VA. JOHN CHILDRESS md. POWELL was a shoemaker, etc., He would
have been born overseas circa 1740, resided in mid to late 18th Century
Albemarle and Amherst Counties, VA (1745-1786) and died in Knox Co., TN after 1804
(when he signed a deed disposing of Amherst property inherited from his
father-in-law. MAJORY POWELL CHILDRESS was a first cousin by marriage to her first
husband, JOHN CHILDRESS SR. Marjory's father (militia Capt. THOMAS POWELL,
SR) was an uncle to EDMUND POWELL of Amherst Co., VA. EDMUND POWELL'S wife
was LUCY JOPLING whose sister ANN JOPLING was married to BENJAMIN CHILDRESS,
SR, the younger brother of MARJORY'S husband, JOHN CHILDRESS." -
[NOTE - They go on to say that the "Scottish Childress's sailed to VA in
1745 from a Welsh port. John Childress's other BROTHER was JOSEPH CHILDRESS who
married MARY GOOLSBY, daughter of JAMES GOOLSBY of Amherst Co, VA - etc. -
MAJORY POWELL CHILDRESS father THOMAS POWELL, SR was an adjacent neighbor of
SOLOMON CARTER who married MARY - - - - of Amherst Co, VA. SOLOMON CARTER'S
granddaughter, KISSIAH CARTER married on or about January 4, 1812 to MARJORY
CHILDRESS widowed 32 year old grandson ROBERT CHILDRESS, hereafter, ROBERT
CHILDRESS md. POLLY LUCAS and KESSIAH CARTER, the ELDEST SON of JOHN CHILDRESS
and ELIZABETH LINDSAY.

"THE ELLIS FAMILY" - And old friend MR. Richard ELLIS of PEDLAR MILLS or RED
HILL -
The following communication from our worthy fellow-citizen, Mr. Thomas ELLIS
of Richmond (VA) -
APRIL 2, 1857 - EXCERPTS -
"The name of ELLIS appears at an early day in connection with the COLONY of
VA, DAVID ELLIS came out in the second supply of emigrants from England and
was one of the men sent by Capt Smith to build a house for King Powhatan at his
favorourite seat, Werowocomico, on York River, JOHN Ellis was one of the
grantees in the second charter of the Virginia Company.
My immediate family is of WELSH extraction and my descent traced to JOHN
ELLIS, who settled on Peter's Creek, a BRANCH OF TUCKAHOE CREEK, in HENRICO
COUNTY, VA. (Note - ABRAHAM CHILDRESS lll owned land on TUCKAHOE CREEK) - He was
born in the year 1661, and he appears at VARINA, the county seat of HENRICO,
October 1, 1683. His wife was named SUSANNAH, and their children were John,
William, Thomas, Henry, James, Joseph, Mary and Charles. JOHN the eldest
married Elizabeth WARE [note, the VA Genealogist Mag. made reference to the
Wares and Childress intermarriages, I've seen the name association with two
Childress branches] - Elizabeth WARE was a relation of BALDWIN and the WARE
ROCKETT, seafaring men who owned the property in the city of Richmond since called
ROCKETTS. He was a magistrate and sheriff of Henrico Co, VA.
JOSEPH, the 6th son married ELIZABETH PERKINS and raised a very numerous
family. He has a grandson, DANIEL ELLIS, born 1774, now living near
watkinsville, in GOOCHLAND County. The ELLISES at this day on TUCKAHOE CREEK are
principally the descendants of JOSEPH ELLIS. He left a will dated 1785, proved
1793.
MARY, the 7th child and only daughter married JOHN SMITH, who owned the fine
farm now belonging to Mr. Robert Edmond, of Richmond, called "Strawberry
Hill."
CHARLES, the seventh son (my gr grandfather), was born in Henrico Co, VA in
the year 1719 to SUSANNAH HARDING, daug of THOMAS HARDING -and
GILES, in the year 1739, and had issue two sons and eight daughters. He
removed with his family to the county of AMHERST, that the county of ALBEMARLE,
in the year 1754, and settled the original set of the ELLISES in that county,
since called "RED HILL" on the waters of PEDLAR RIVER. He died May 4, 1759,
etc" - ISSUE
HANNAH -
EDITH married DEVEREUX GILLIAM [NOTE: Possible GILLIAM connection to JUDITH
GILLIAM who married JOSEPH TAYLOR, son of SOPHIA CHILDRESS (dau of ABRAHAM)
who married SAMUEL TAYLOR -
SUSANNAH married Isaac WRIGHT (whose name was seen in deeds between Solomon
CARTER and himself) -
JOSIAH -
MARY ANN who married PETER CARTER, brother to SOLOMON CARTER and his wife,
MARY ANN CHILDRESS, daughter of ABRAHAM.
CHARLES married first, Elizabeth Waters, secondly, SARAH TUCKER, the
daughter of LUCRETIA CHILDRESS (dau of ABRAHAM) and MATTHEW TUCKER.
Bethena married Thomas Leftwich.
Elizabeth married William GILLIAM
Rosanna married Charles Davis. -
NOTE - According to Carter descendant and seasoned researcher, Dick Zieman,
it was the ELLIS family who were the main reason the CARTERS followed from
HENRICO to AMHERST. If you can follow all these various intermarriages, they
all link back to Abraham Childress lll (aka Childers thru his children's
marriages and their children. Abraham lll owned land in Henrico, Albemarle,
Goochland, Amherst and other counties in VA. He died in Albemarle County, VA 1764
with children and some children who died before him. He was married at
least twice. His first wife's maiden name (CANNON) came down thru the CARTER
FAMILY as did CREED. The name of one son of Abraham lll, CREED, has come down
thru the families of CARTER, TUCKER and TAYLOR and all intermarried with
ABRAHAM lll's children and grandchildren.
But the one who interested me the most was the son of Abraham lll, CREED,
whose name came down thru only ONE known CHILDRESS ancestry and that was of -
JOHN CHILDRESS born 1759 to son ROBERT CHILDRESS and his family of descendants.

Dear Patrick -
Re: From your message dated, June 29, 2005 [Abraham Childress lll (aka
Childers) and His Family in VA -
Since your new to the list and haven't had the time to read all the archive
messages regarding your questions - Even though this topic has been hashed and
rehashed, you have every right, especially in light of the Childers -
Childress DNA project, to ask all the questions you wish! Those who are sick of
this topic, don't have to read this:) - This will be quite long, but it's not
so black and white as to be simply stated.
You said - "I believe it's a fair statement that we all would like to have
simple facts in our research for our true "roots". If someone wishes to
speculate, that's okay, as long as it's prefaced with a note to that extent.
Following is verbatim excerpt from a note issued by Gary or Mark Childress some
time ago, in which the author expounds on the THEORY of the "1745 crossing" in
a ship by a CHILDRESS, whose descendent was Sarah Childress POLK. Can
anyone on distribution of this research list comment as to the accuracy (or
inaccuracies) that might be in the following verbiage? Are we suggesting that this
tombstone did not exist at all? If not, then what was the PURPOSE of
PRETENSE?" - end -
I don't profess to know all the answers to your questions Patrick. I only
have in my 25 years of Childress research, what I feel would be the background
for some of those questions and perhaps some of the reasons. I also want to
say that our listowner (Bob), in his introduction to this list, said we CAN
have disagreements:) Discussion is healthy, it encourages us to seek the
truth and to search for factual data and not believe everything we read from one
group of people. I don't want to be told something which has no factual
data, but instead is purely heresy, with nothing to back it up. I say this
because I AM a CHILDRESS. I don't want my Childress ancestry to ride on the coat
tail of a theory which is, in my humble opinion, on very shaky ground.
The Childress-List is completely based on the theory that there was a "1745
crossing" and that these people bought their own ship and left from Wales,
having arrived in America AFTER 1745 or thereabouts and that they are the ONLY
one's who were "true" Childress. Gary and Mark Childress published the 1960
memoirs of John Williams Childress as their proof. They used these memoirs
and the mention of a tombstone of JOEL Childress as how and why THEIR
CHILDRESS came to be in America. They also said in every message on their list (when
asked) that there were TWO gene pools and that their gene pool was not even
remotely connected to those who "used" the name CHILDRESS, but instead were
really CHILDERS, period, the end. The theory and that is what you also called
it, is indeed a theory to me. I'll be happy to comment and to give my
opinion, (backed with sources) which are my reasons for not trusting certain
parts, of a family memoir (John Williams Childress, 1960). It is what preceded
the 1960 memoir which sent up a red flag and then later messages from the
Childress-List and most recently, the "series" from Gary and Mark Childress on
their own ancestry and those connected to the arrival of "the Childress in 1745"
from (take your pick), they have said both, Wales and or Scotland. -
Additionally, Gary and Mark Childress on the Childress DNA (rootsweb) decided that
those who don't match them (and there were but a few), said we "Viking
Childress" were actually from an ancestor called "Allred" and were his bastard
offspring. If that was proven or not, they made no future reference to it.
MY OPINION and WHAT I BELIEVE - (as to your questions) -
1) The tombstone (Joel) did exist, but the genealogical data was
embellished. Yes, part of the tombstone which survived, is in a historic village in
TN.
2) IF Joel Childress tombstone had a complete genealogical story of his
ancestor's name and arrival and did indeed say what the 1960 memoir and Gary -
Mark Childress claim - then WHY did Sarah Childress Polk NEVER mention the
tombstone to anyone, ever? Even when she was questioned one year before her
death, she said in a letter dated 1897, that she knew NOTHING about her family
other than her grandmother Childress, was named "SUSAN" (Joel's mother) and
her sister was named for her. The person asked Mrs. Polk questions about her
family, all she had to say was, "Please see my father's tombstone, it is all
engraved right there," - She never said that, why not if it existed, why did
she not say so? The letter in question was published to this list by me (see
archives) -
3) Gary and Mark Childress claim, that JOEL CHILDRESS was the son of JOHN
Childress (due to the tombstone theory) - and also they came to this
conclusion from the 1960 memoirs, the name JOHN was taken from the memoir as factual,
when indeed, John Williams Childress ALSO said that his own ancestor who
married John Whitsett was POLLY SEVIER. Her name was not Polly Sevier, it was
SARAH THOMPSON who married JOHN WHITSETT, both of NC and both who migrated to
TN and were wealthy land and slave holders. The two were the parents of
Elizabeth Whitsett, wife of JOEL CHILDRESS. IF John Williams Childress made that
type of error, what other errors did he make? And for the your record,
Sarah Thompson was Scottish, John Whitsett (originally Whiteside) was Irish. (See
archives) - John Whitsett Childress, SR was suggested to be the namesake of
his own grandfather, not Childress, but WHITSETT.
4) The ancestry of JOHN WILLIAMS CHILDRESS (namesake for his mother's
maiden name, which is Welsh), as laid out by Mark and Gary Childress failed to
mention a very important name, that of the third son of JOEL and Elizabeth
Whitsett Childress. SEE - (Archives, March 17, 2003, "The Family Bible of Joel
Childress of Rutherford, TN", owned by Mr.Jesse Beesley, a first cousin of
J.M. Avent , published 1812. and published to this list by me - The child who
was born and died as a baby, September 2, 1805, BENJAMIN W. CHILDRESS. The
name is very important, because of the research by Lee Rau, in which he found
the orphan record in Surry County, NC where JOEL Childress was shown to not be
the son of JOHN Childress, but of a deceased father named BENJAMIN CHILDRESS,
the year was 1789. Joel was bound out to Abraham Childress with a
connection to a Stephen Childress - (From Gary and Mark Childress - "Abraham is a name
NOT associated with the 1745 crossing CHILDRESS family, that is an English
Childers name only.") [Note - It has been proven that Mary Ann Childress,
daughter of Abraham Childress lll and his first wife, Elizabeth Cannon were the
parents of Gary and Mark Childress ancestor, Kessiah Carter Childress, [wife
of Robert Childress, son of JOHN Childress, daughter of Solomon and Mary Ann
Childress Carter.] - So, apparently, if the Carter records are accurate and
they appear to be, this branch of Carter-Childress named their one son ABRAHAM
with his sons being named after Mary Ann's brothers, Cannon and Creed
(Childress) and her own father, Abraham -
5) SEE: Childress Research-List archives, May 10, 2001 - Childress
Letters, between Dr. M. Childress of Iowa and Adair Lyon Childress, brother of JOHN
WILLIAMS Childress - Excerpt - May 17th, 1930 - "My EARLIEST record is of
ABRAM CHILDRESS who died in 1764 Albemarle County, Virginia." - (same as the 4.
Abraham above) [Notice, he did NOT tell Dr. M. Childress about the tombstone,
he never mentioned it - he found no EARLY connection to anyone he said] - "I
have met Childress in several sections of East Tennessee and note very
striking facial resemblance's to my OWN family in some of them and feel sure we m
ust be offshoots of the original ancestors." [Note, why would he mention this
if he was not impressed with the apparent physical appearance of those
Childress?] - "Sarah (Childress) became the wife of James POLK, the eleventh
President. After her death in Nashville, and I as a lad, recall her most vividly
and could have secured VALUABLE GENEALOGICAL data from HER if I had then given
the subject a thought; as it is, the subject seems to have been neglected by
ALL of my ELDERS, with the result that my information consists of MERE
SCRAPS." - [Note, does this sound to you as if they were privy to a tombstone of
JOEL Childress and what it was to have said about a "1745 crossing" and that
of a JOHN Childress being the father of JOEL? It does NOT appear that way to
me.
6) The above letters were written in 1930, when A. Lyon's memory was
sharper, why did he not mention the supposed tombstone? The memoirs of JOHN
WILLIAMS CHILDRESS (his brother) were some 30 years later, when he seemed to be
forced to give the family some type of memoirs. After all, he was a relative
of a First Lady, he basically had to. He claimed that he and his brother had
played on the tombstone of JOEL CHILDRESS, their recollection was that they
"decided" the DATE was 1745, although it was faded and "dim". Who placed the
ten foot fall tombstone there on the grave of Joel Childress? If there was
such a tombstone, who placed it there? Was it placed there by the POLKS? Was
there a political agenda behind it? Was it to hide the fact that Joel had
been orphaned, would that bit of news harm the political future of James Knox
Polk, his having married Sarah Childress? Why would it even have been
important? Was it due to Joel's being accused as a murderer in an 1803/4 court?
He was branded with the letter "M" on his hand, according to the sources
provided by "Kay" (See archives). Would any of this matter? Maybe it would have.
Those I've corresponded with who are of that family, married in to it, such
as Whitsett, Thompson, Williams, Philips, of the four, Philips and Williams
were Welsh, Thompson was Scottish and Whitsett was Irish. Could the family
traditions have been confused? I've published information regarding the
Williams and Philips and their Welsh ancestry. It was JOHN WHITSETT himself who
was living in NC in the hub of the Mecklenburg County, NC Declaration of
Independence, he worked for the government, right along side of the POLKS, the
largest land and slave holder in NC and whose POLKS were the movers and shakers
behind the declaration. This is the early connection which brought Sarah
Childress in contact with her future husband, James Knox Polk, thru WHITSETT and
his early connection to the family. The protection factor was evident. (See:
"Colonial Records of NC", by Col. William L. Saunders, NC Secretary of
State) -
Political or personal, or a mix up of embellishment? Lost memories,
confused tradition? Perhaps a mix of it all. No one living has ever seen the
supposed original tombstone of Joel Childress. The memoirs of the name sake of
Sarah Williams Childress, wife of John Whitsett Childress, JOHN WILLIAMS
CHILDRESS didn't mention his own Welsh and Scottish ancestry, if he did, the later
generations were confused as to WHICH side he meant. He did the best he
could and I admire his determination to provide a family memoir, but there were
errors, his facts were mixed regarding various family connections, as with any
memoir, we have to seek out the real truth ourselves. I might add, the same
would apply to Gary and Mark Childress "series" recently published to their
list and this list. Their ancestry tree was in great error, did they change
it for all to see so that there would be no future confusion? Not that I
could find a trace of on their list. They did however, delete the name of Sarah
Edmondson as having married "their ancestor" Joseph Childress and this
appeared in the CFA Newsletter for spring, 2005 of which I receive a paper copy.
What if the same thing happened with John Williams Childress? Did he make
errors to and perhaps it was to late to change them, his brother Lyon had
already passed away?
Feel free to ask questions Patrick. As I said, I don't profess to know all
the secrets of the Childress - Polk family, only what's been documented so
far. In the meantime, since the DNA project has matches with Childers and
Childress, it's apparent we could all come from the same ancestry, while a few (so
far) don't have matches with the rest. There is always a reason, perhaps
that will be brought to light very soon.
