Dear List -
Re: Gary / Mark Childress Papers - Posted to this list by Joseph Childress -
A fellow researcher told me of a message on the Childress-List archives,
April 19, 2000, by "Kay" whose a subscriber to our list. I know Kay will read
this, so if she does, maybe she can post some additional information to our
list. But in the meantime, here are some of the informative items from her
message, which to me, refer to the same Christian names in the Mark / Gary
Papers - Also mentioned were POWELL, JOPLING, EDMONDSON and others.
To refresh your memory - The ancestral tree which Gary and Mark gave for
themselves (according to their published paper) is -
1JOHN CHILDRESS ("the Patriarch"), "emigrant" (age c.45 on the "1745
crossing") - son was -
2JOSEPH CHILDRESS ("md. SARAH - - - "; =m2. JAMES EDMONDSON*)"emigrant" and
Virginia planter (age c.25 on the "1745 crossing"); son was -
3JOHN CHILDRESS ("md. MARJORY POWELL"), shoemaker and "emigrant" (age c.5 on
the "1745 crossing"), son was -
4JOHN CHILDRESS ("md ELIZABETH LINDSAY"), farmer and Revolutionary War
militiaman - [Settled in Knox County, TN] -
* NOTE - From the Will of JAMES EDMONDSON, 1792/3, it is concluded that
SARAH DYER married first Mr. HAYES and then EDMONDSON, there was no marriage by
SARAH to JOHN CHILDRESS. Also, JOHN CHILDRESS was shown in the WILL to be the
SON-IN-LAW. Apparently, JOHN CHILDRESS married a daughter from SARAH's first
marriage or from her second marriage to JAMES EDMONDSON. From the 1790
Wilkes County, NC Census, a JAMES EDMINSON (Edmonson) and JOHN CHILDERS
(Childress) are living close together, so they were not living in Virginia during 1790
census.

3Ralph JOPLING born 1743 Goochland Co, VA, died 1776 Philadelpha PA of small
pox.
4HANNAH JOPLING born 1754, died 1815c - Married November 1771, SAMUEL ALLEN,
the son of BETHENA NEVILLE and JOHN ALLEN. BETHENA NEVILLE was the daughter
of [Col.] JAMES NEVILLE and wife, LUCY THOMAS. - (more family info in
message) -
The above LUCY THOMAS was the known second wife of ABRAHAM CHILDRESS who was
shown by author, Alberta Majorie Dennstedt, San Diego, CA in the series of
articles for The Virginia Genealogist as, "ABRAHAM CHILDERS lll", born c1681 -
1783. [Abraham's surname was spelt CHILDRES on the original copy of his 1763
Albemarle County will] -
William CANNON was the father of Elizabeth CANNON who ABRAHAM married first.
The author further wrote that ABRAHAM was married three times, his last
marriage was to LUCY THOMAS NEVILLE, widow of his best friend, Col. JAMES
NEVILLE. Col. James NEVILLE died and left a Will dated, March 7, 1752 in St. Ann's
Parish, Albeharle County, VA, it was proved Nov 9, 1752.
Ms. Dennstedt [author] in one of her sources also had this to say in
footnote - #29, Benjamin B. Weisiger, Albemarle County, Virginia, Court Papers,
1744-1783 (Richmond, 1987), pp. 26-27. This case has so much family information
an effort was made to examine the original papers but permission was denied
the author of this article. -
NOTE - It's my opinion from reading four court record accounts of the
ALLENS, CHILDRESS, NEVILLE, JOPLINGS and other's connected to these families, that
there were sensitive issues within these families. Marriages were in doubt,
unwed mother's, children born out of wedlock. The court papers include
depostions from family and friends. Some of the sensitive issues appear to have
some type conclusion. However, there were court records which were not allowed
to be viewed. What was in those documents? If your a serious family
genealogist, you want to know, I do.

ALLEN vs HYLTON - 1814 -
BETHINIA ALLEN [daughter of LUCY THOMAS NEVILLE also widow of husband,

from her father. She lived and co-habitated with GEORGE HYLTON without being
married. She died Augusts 4, 1803.
NOTE -
Many in this family were deposed. Among those were CHRISTOPHER HASKINS and
SALLY, AMASA PALMER and JUDITH, TOCHARNER WOODSON. Legatee, HANNAH ALLEN -
Col. JESSE JOPLING [brother of HANNAH JOPLING ALLEN - JESSE was born bef 1776c

County, VA.
Other issues mentioned in this very detailed court record and depositions,

Son, James THOMAS, daughter, BETHINIA HYLTON [NEVILLE, ALLEN] - daughters,
MARTHA HOBSON - JUDITH MITCHELL, grandsons, JAMES TURNER, JESSE ALLEN, SYLTHEY
TURNER.
In these court records there is suggestion that children were born out of
wedlock, both in the NEVILLE and THOMAS families. Per the NEVILLE-LIST,
January 28, 1999 - from the WM and MARY QUARTERLY Editor offered an interpretation
of the THOMAS names in James and LUCY THOMAS NEVILLE's family.
There was a Chancery Suit in Williamsburg Chancery Court entitled, THOMAS vs
NEVILLE mentioning the WILL of Captain JAMES NEVILLE, proved Nov 9, 1752.
He was married twice: By his first wife (name not given) he had JAMES NEVILLE
- JOANNA BROWN - HANNAH MATTHEWS and MARY DOUGLAS. By his second wife, LUCY
THOMAS (married second, ABRAHAM CHILDRESS) - he had CORNELIOUS THOMAS, born
out of wedlock [had issue] - BETHANIA NEVILLE, also born before marriage
[married ALLEN and HYLTON] - MARTHA [married Hobson], ELIABETH died underage and
unmarried - JUDITH Mitchell - Sally HASKINS - Lucy WOODSON and others - Other
marriages were to VAUGHAN, HENDRICK and PALMER (Wm and Mary Quarterly, 19:61)

Hi Steve,
Re: Childrey / Childress Creek - Your land in Halifax -
This is news! You own property which was in the CREWS and CHILDRESS name
till 1910? Wow.
If you would, go over the archives for the list. There were messages
regards Susannah Lax, who I believe married a Childress first. Her father's will
was written before she married Abraham Childress and Susannah was not called
Lax in the will but, Susannah CHILDRESS. Then she married Abraham Childress
and when he died, she married Peter CREWS, all in Halifax County, Virginia.
If your land in Halifax County belonged to the above family, then you should
be able to have a good background on them! There's a large Crew's website
with original sources and gives a time line for all the CREWS. The issue with
Susannah Lax is, WHICH Childress did she marry before she married Abraham
Childress? Abraham left an estate in Halifax County. And there are also census
and tax records for Susannah, Abraham and possibly his son and Peter Crews,
all in Halifax.
Keep us posted!
MaryJean
Con,
Oh my gosh, this is great! I've corresponded with Eldon, compared notes,
but never knew he connected to one named Creed Childress! I see he has the
middle initial of "L". I've been busy:) I've also seen it as Creed C.
Childress.
The Lucy Thomas Neville Childress is one more fascinating and mysterious
story. When the author (VA Genealogist Magazine) sought permission (for court
documents) from the descendants of this Childress family, they said NO and
other historical groups said, NO as well, hum. If you look thru Chakley's,
you'll see the court records for Lucy and her brood. Seems there were lots of
law suits and difficulties within that bunch. You see, Lucy's son married
Abraham's (Lucy's husband) daughter, hum again. Lucy in the land records (VA)
seemed to reap the rewards of old Abraham's wealth. Gee, hope I'm not
insulting any descendants who may see this message someday! This is not heresy, it's
fact. Lucy seemed to be a THOMAS and those Thomas, in early VA were large
land owners, they don't lack for records. But of huge interest to and
curiously, old James Neville (of the titled Neville's I might add) in his will make
it an ORDER, that LUCY couldn't marry his very loved and devoted friend after
he died and who was the devoted and loved friend? ABRAHAM:) and no, she
didn't wait at all, she married old Abraham Childress right away! So folks say
Lucy had Abraham's children out of wedlock, while in wedlock with the very
aristocratic Col. James Neville, hum.
I'm so very curious as to why LINDSEY named HIS son CREED. Why would he?
What was the reasoning behind it? Seems our families always have a reason. A
good friend, a grandfather, an ancestor, a president:) I'll look over
Eldon's work and write him, maybe HE has the answer!
THANK YOU for sending this, I'm very excited to read it and interested, for
more than one major reason. From the look of the emails I've received
(lately) from Ezell cousins, seems there is an Ezell marriage to a Childress and of
the Lindsey Childress branch. At last count there were, at least 8
Childress - Ezell marriages, my gr. gr. grandfather, Thomas Childress, married one,
Zelphia Ezell, all I can say now is, Good Lord:)

Hi Steve,
Re: Childrey or Childress Creek in Halifax County, VA and who it's named
for?
I've also had a big interest in Halifax. There was a marriage with a Richard
Childress 1785 in Halifax to Jane Weaver, yet another Weaver! Anyway, my
ancestor Benedict Childress married a Jane, sometimes called Jean. In three
original documents, my JANE CHILDRESS was called the widow of "Richard
Childrefs". Their first son named William was born 1785 VA. I had other linking
ancestors who lived in Halifax. I've spent a huge amount time in the GA Archives
looking at Halifax records, what I could locate that is! Here's some of it,
if this will help out.

SUZANNAH CHILDRESS m. June 24, 1797 to Peter CREWS. (She was the first wife

"Susannah CHILDRESS", it's suggested she was married first to a Childress, he died

when her father's will was written. After Abraham died, then she married Peter
Crews, he also left her a widow.

You had in your message, Halifax County, Anna CHILDRESS dated 1854 with some
blanks, then a HENSON, reported by Thomas Childress son. Do you know who
they were, the ANNA?
Possibly ANNE HENSON who married WILLIAM CHILDRESS, Rev. Soldier (Pension
Papers, W.3775), he was 72 in June of 1832. He enlisted in Charlotte County,
VA where he was born. William and Anne were married October 27, 1786 in
Charlotte Co, VA. William's birthdate projected to be 1760, Charlotte County, VA,
he then moved to Halifax after living in Charlotte for many years. His wife
was a widow when the papers were filed. Don't know if the HENSON in your
message is connected or not, but thought I had better mention it to you.
I think the best thing to do about Childrey or Childress Creek would be to
look at land deeds. Any of those who married in Halifax could have been the
namesake of Childrey or Childress Creek. There seems to be a debate on the
name, Cindy Childrey lives in VA and she believes the name is Childrey rather
than Childress, she said there was also a Childrey Church hearby. Gary Chi
ldress (Childress-List) said "Childess Creek."
Keep us posted on what you (hopefully) find out, maybe some of this info
will help out. By the way, as you know, I'm a direct Ezell descendant and she
(Zelphia) married my ancestor, Thomas Childress (b.1814 VA) So far, I've
located about 7 Ezell - Childress marriages in VA and TN, including mine. Will
probably post something to the list about it. I believe folks might be
surprised as to who your wife and I connect to thru our Ezell's, fascinating stuff.
Thanks for writing.

A Bill. ROBT. CHILDRESS and others vs. BETSY HYNDS and others. Filed August
17/49 To the Honorable Thomas I. Williams Chancellor & sitting in Chancery
for the District composed of Knox, Anderson & Blount [Counties]: Humbly
Complaining herewith unto your Honor Your Orators ROBERT CHILDRESS of Knox
County, LUCY JULIAN & her husband JOHN JULIAN of Knox County, JOHN
CHILDRESS of Anderson County & WILLIAM CHILDRESS of Campbell County,
Ten[nessee] [plead] that about the 11th day of January 1848 [sic] their
ancestor, JOHN CHILDRESS, departed this life in Knox County intestate, and
at County Court of Knox County, your Orator ROBERT CHILDRESS & his son
ROBERT CHILDRESS were appointed administrators of said estate. Said
intestate was very little if any indebted at the time of his death. His
personal estate is more than sufficient to pay & satisfy his debts. Said
intestate died seized and possessed of a tract of land adjoining the lands
of John Connor, ROBERT CHILDRESS & LINDSAY CHILDRESS of Knox County and is
estimated to contain 453 [acres] it being the same place on which said
intestate died. Your Orators state that in addition to your Complainants
said intestate left the following named persons his heirs at law &
distributees, to wit: BETSY HYNDS & her husband BYRAM HYNDS of Marshall
County, Ala[bama], the heirs of LINDSAY CHILDRESS to wit: PHOEBE TINDLE &
her husband JAMES TINDLE of ___ [sic] County, Missouri State. Also POLLY
CHILDRESS who has since intermarried with THOMAS MAY, NANCY CHILDRESS since
intermarried with JAMES DeARMOND, HUGH I. CHILDRESS & MARGARET CHILDRESS
both minors have no guardians. They reside in Knox County, Tennessee. Also
the heirs of SALLY COX, formerly SALLY CHILDRESS to wit: JACKSON COX of
Anderson County, CURD COX of Knox County, JOHN COX of Claiborne County,

HYNDS of Marshall County, Ala., BENJAMIN J. HYNDS, LORRINDA PHARRIS & her
husband SOLOMON PHARRIS, EBENEZER R. HYNDS, WILLIAM SINGLETON HYNDS, &
MARJORY ANN HYNDS, all citizens of Texas. Also JAMES CHILDRESS of Pulaski
County, Missouri. Your Orators charge that said tract of land is not
susceptible of a division amongst said heirs [and] that to divide it would
lessen its value & in fact ruin the farm; that it is impossible to give
spring water to ___ and your Orators are perfectly satisfied that in order
to [make] an equal division among the several heirs it will be necessary to
sell said tract of land and your Orators believe that all of said heirs are
desirous that said land may be sold and the purchase money divided. The
premises considered. Your Orators pray that the foregoing named hairs at
law of their said intestate [ancestor] may be made Defendants to this Bill
& that guardians ad litem(195) may be appointed as defendants for the
minors and they pray that on the final hearing of this cause that said land
may be sold and the proceeds of said sale may be divided and if in any
thing your Orators have mistaken their relief they pray for general relief
according to the facts in this case. Boyd & Boyd, AOL [Attorneys of Law],

Con,
Drats, ya caught me:) Gotta admit, I've studied the TN census book so much,
it's as worn as an old shoe! Honestly, I swear, I missed the Creed
Childress, his name was last on the page on the page. You said, to find the
descendant Creed Childress, as in? What do you know about this Creed? He lives next
door to Lindsey Childress! Anything to it?
Oh my Lord, Lucy Juicy Thomas? Sigh. I'll need to make some charts for this
one! Let me think on it and who knows, maybe some sense can be made of it.
You did pretty good yourself. I've read the VA Genealogist articles on
Abraham Chalders lll, have you read them? While I didn't always agree with the
author, she made some good points and had sources, maybe I had better look that
over again, I do recall she wrote of Henry, John and Joseph as being
brothers:) Thanks Con, now I'll be up all night trying to make some sense out this!

Not exactly sure why I am sending this info to the list. Maybe just to add
to the other VA data posted earlier. Seems everyone is only interested in
the POLK /CHILDRESS side. Guess the real reason is because I am real
curious about who Chidrey Creek was named after in Halifax. Sometime soon I
hope to get some time to find out.

Fascinating discourse going on at the site right now.
I am researching Rockbridge Co:
1820 (Rockbridge Co) Fanny Tennant m. John Kiddy. Permission signed by her
father, William Tennant - witnesses to permission: John Childress and William
maybe Coleman. Co bondsman: John Childress. William Tennant in Rockbridge Co
by 1794 tax list.
1802 (Amherst Co) William Tennant m. Elizabeth Childress (I have sent for
copies of original documents). Witness John Childress, others: Hugh Campbell,
William L. Crawford and Tabitha Ballinger per posting by another researcher 1999.
John Childress first appears on Rockbridge tax list 1809. Sometimes the tax
commission took the return for Benjamin G. or Bartholomew the same day as
John. So far I have followed John through 1823 still in Rockbridge.
Descendants of Francis (Tennant) Kiddy d. 1879 Upshur Co WVA wrote that she
was a cousin of Sarah Childress Knox. Can anyone identify this John Childress?
or list his children?
Your thoughts appreciated.
Pat
MaryJean,
Surprised it took you this long to find the descendant Creed Childress.
Just to add to this little detail I'll bring up something that makes it
stand out even more. Since Joseph Childress -- son of John Childress ("md.
Sarah") and brother of John Childress ("md. Marjory Powell") and brother
of Benjamin Childress ("md. Ann Jopling")-- is now supposed to have
married Mary Goolsby (granddaughter of Stephen Goolsby and by online
gedcoms Martha Thomas) and since (again online gedcoms) Martha Thomas is
the daughter of Edward Thomas whose sister Lucy Thomas married Abraham
Childers (Childress) father of the Creed you are referring to, then why not?
My question is where does this leave Henry Childress (supposedly married
Susan (Susannah) Goolsby), who in Kay's post (in part) below seems to be
linked to a (this?) John Childress and possibly the same Abraham?

Dear List:
Along the train of thought, regarding the "Mark and Gary Childress Papers"
which were published to this list by Joseph Childress - I reviewed the census
records for TN and in particular, Knox County, TN. I see one name which I'd
not noticed before (for some reason) and the rest are known to me and
probably to you - as follows -
"TENNESSEE CENSUS RECORDS 1810-1850 of the CHILDERS / CHILDRESS FAMILIES

** This is the first time I really noticed this Christian name, "CREED"?
Anyone whose done research on the various branches of Childers and Childress
would recognize the name. It's a pattern in certain branches of Childress to
rename over and over, this is why we have difficulty in separating them!
The first time I saw a CREED was in the will of ABRAHAM CHILDRESS who had
married at least twice, second time to LUCY THOMAS, widow of JAMES NEVILLE.
CREED was the younger son of ABRAHAM and inherited most all the estate, later,
he seems to disappear. SC did show a CREED in several census records. But,
as for the CREED in the census above? He's living next door to LINDSEY
CHILDRESS. This Lindsey to my knowledge belongs in the family of JOHN CHILDRESS,
Rev. Soldier to ROBERT, born 1785 VA, also above. I just find if very odd that
the name CREED would pop up in the family of JOHN to ROBERT. Is this 30 year
old man not the namesake for another CREED CHILDRESS? Could it be possible?
Who would name their son CREED if not for a relative or ancestor? Does
anyone know about this Childress, named CREED? Just asking:)
Of further interest to me would be the wife of CREED. Ms. Reigard has Lucy
J. as a WEAVER. According to, "CHILDERS / CHILDRESS TENNESSEE RECORDS,
1780-1900", Jo Ann Roberts Childers - Here are those by that name who married into
the CHILDRESS family - I have record that perhaps one of them was not born a
Weaver, but married one and then married a CHILDRESS. -
1) ELIZABETH WEAVER married April 7, 1846, Knox Co, LINDSEY CHILDRESS.
2) FANNY WEAVER married Dec 2, 1900, Knox Co, WILLIAM CHILDRESS.
3) LUCY JANE WEAVER married 29 Oct, 1842, Knox Co, ? CHILDRESS.
4) NANCY WEAVER (Walker?) married (no date or county), STEPHEN CHILDRESS.
5) SUSAN J. WEAVER married Oct 6, 1878 Anderson Co, ELIJAH. N. CHILDRESS.
6) JAMES WEAVER married Sept. 12, 1836, Knox Co, EDITH J. CHILDRESS.
7) DAVID WEAVER married Feb. 4, 1842, Anderson Co, FEELY CHILDRESS.
NOTE - Could it be possible that some of the confusion between the
relationships of certain CHILDRESS lineage's be that different branches married in to
ONE surname, such as the WEAVER above?
A good example would be STEPHEN CHILDRESS, who was in Williamson County, TN
and left a WILL dated March 28, 1821, but Probated March 1829 Tipton County,
was also shown to possibly have been married to a WEAVER. His wife in the
will was named NANCY. His two daughters were named SUSAN and ELIZABETH, both
married HULME, which is another suggested connection and indirectly to the
HULME family who may somehow connect to the JOHN CHILDRESS in the Wilkes Co.,
NC Will of JAMES EDMONDSON, previously posted to the list. With Childress
marriages into certain surnames like WEAVER and HULME, the CHILDRESS's in
question might not come from the same branch (most times do), but, could connect by
WHO they married and the children of these Childress's would in turn be
blood relations, whether one parent was or not!
There were two other's (I didn't list) in the Knox County census, according
to Ms Reigard's census book. SAMUEL CHILDRESS, being born 1818 TN and wife
Elizabeth along with children and also WILLIAM CHILDRESS and wife ELIZABETH.
William being born 1797 VA and also Elizabeth being born in VA 1825 and they
had issue.
Happy Easter everyone!
MaryJean
Dear List:
I've not looked at my old legal pads, full of Childress notes [from GA
Archives, Atlanta], but did tonight. While I doubt any of this will be news, I'll
share what I've read so far. Mark and Gary's "Papers," which Joseph
Childress shared with us a few days ago stated their branch of Childress, were in
Albemarle County, VA. I'm not declaring anything here, just giving you what I
wrote in my notes and from at least 10 years ago. If Elizabeth Lindsay was
born in VA and married John Childress ll (born 1759 Albemarle, VA), then what I
read might be helpful to any of you who are from the same lineage.
The John they reference is the one who was pensioned for the Rev. War while
in Knox County,TN. Mark / Gary say that he was likely born on his
grandfather's 200 acre tobacco plantation along the north bank of the James River.
They also say that John who married the Lindsay (parents unk) was the son of a
John Childress (married Majory Powell). He also said that after 1804, when he
signed a deed disposing of Amherst property inherited form his father-in -
law. So that would mean he left Virginia after 1804? My old notes include
names in that part of VA during when (Mark and Gary's) John Childress was to
have lived and married there.

From the above research notes, I had written that before the 1785 First
Census, the wills for Albemarle Co show that Abraham CHILDERS was not alive, his
will was dated 1764 - How many of his offspring remained? Not that many were
there 20 something years later, but according to the census for 1785, JOHN
and JOSEPH Childres (Childress) were there. Then in the 1810 Census for
Albemarle, you notice a JOHN whose in the earlier census for 1785 is not present.
The only two I located in the wills [at that time] was a JOHN, his will was
written in 1800, so he was deceased when the census for 1810 took place.

Hi Joseph (Jay) -
As for giving you credit for Mark Childress's Paper, I'm sorry you got that
impression. You did post the message to this list and so I noted that to all
the list members, not that you wrote it, but that it was your message. And
thank you once again!
Since you replied to my message, I have to assume your answering something I
wrote. I looked back over this message (March 16th). I was giving some
information on Mitchell Childress of Knox County, TN. I've read the
observations that Mitchell and your ancestor were not related or did not came from a
common ancestor. Mitchell's Christian name was of interest to me and this was
my intent, to give information which might be of use to any of his
descendants. Because of Mitchell's name, he could very well be of the Childress - Jones
family of VA, just a guess on my part due to his Christian name and other
leads. I realize that both he and a John Childress were in Knox County, TN. I
also know of other Childress's in Knox County and their not accounted for as
far as I know, that would be a good project for this list.
It's a shame we can't all take the DNA, that being "female" Childress's. I
do not know any who survived from my Childress's, so that would keep me from
knowing who might have matched. There are so many different Childers and
Childress, there won't be descendants enough for them all, not possible as I see
it. I appreciate your input on the DNA and I have read the results you
speak of. I also know that you, Mark and Gary don't match with any of the other
males who are Childers or Childress. However, as I said before, not everyone
can be tested, due to no males from their line.
I hope you read my latest message Jay. I know you mentioned a possible
connection for your purposed ancestor, Joseph Childress to a Sarah Edmondson as
early as 1999 (genforum), but this is in error. Would be happy to discuss
with you on here or thru email about the Hayes-Edmondson's and of James
Edmondson's mention of John Childress as his "son in law" in the 1792 Wilkes County,
NC Will. Thank you for writing!

Dear List:
My earlier message was in regard to the series by Mark Childress, published
to this list by Dr. Joseph (Jay) Childress. In his papers he gave an
ancestor tree for his Childress family. In doing so, the information which I
provided concluded that apparently, a man named John Childress was named as
"son-in-law" and not "stepson", on the 1792 Wilkes County, NC will of James
Edmondson, Sarah Dyer-Hayes 2nd husband. Mark's contention being that Sarah's prior
husband had been Joseph Childress [father of John] who died prematurely at
aged 43. I believe Mark's conclusion to be in error, from sources provided by
descendants of Hayes-Edmondson.
I've some notes from the GA Archives [Atlanta, GA] and will try to publish
those later. If any of you believe you descend from these Childress's,
hopefully it will help you prove your ancestry. So with that said, I'll give the
information I have and where it may link to those [connected] in the James
Edmondson, 1792 Wilkes County, NC will which named John Childress as his "son
in law".

Dear List,
The address below is from the archives of this list. The message was kindly
posted by Dr. Joseph (Jay) Childress, who I hope will continue with the
series, written by Mark Childress (Childress-List owner). No one on our list has
made any comment about it so far. However, Kay posted Scottish information
once again on those with our surname who lived in Scotland during the 1600s and
1700s. Whether any of them ever left Scotland for America I don't know.
Mark Childress said in his series that George "Childress" [Childers] Sr.'s
descendant left Scotland and arrived in America perhaps on the "Jenny", but not
before 1745. According to Mark, this particular date was taken from the
tombstone of Joel Childress, who we all know to be the father of First Lady, Sarah
Childress Polk. If you haven't read the message, you should. Mark gives the
ancestry of his, his brother (Gary) and DR.Jay as having come from this
lineage - He also has said, that no one else in the Childers - Childress DNA has
matched with them so far.

From the above message, I want to repeat the section for the tree 1 - 4. It
says - The paternal grandparents of John Childress (md Lindsay) were JOSEPH
CHILDRESS, SR. (hereinafter "Joseph Childress on Rockhouse Creek, Albemarle
Co., VA") and wife SARAH (nee - - - hereinafter SARAH CHILDRESS "md. (1) JOSEPH
CHILDRESS, (2) JAMES EDMONDSON") Upon the untimely death of husband JOSEPH
CHILDRESS, SR. ("Rockhouse Creek") in Albeharle Co., VA in 1763 [age c43], his
widow SARAH remarried to JAMES EDMONDSON** of Pedlar River, Amherst Co., VA
and removed to his plantation in the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. It is
SARAH's son JOHN CHILDRESS, SR. (md Powell) who is named in the 1792 will of her
2nd husband JAMES EDMONDSON** as executor and "son-in-law [i.e.,
"stepson"]**, not SARAH's grandson JOHN CHILDRESS, Jr. (md Lindsay).
According to the rest of the story, Mark says that John Childress Sr, the
Patriarch was born c1700 perhaps western Scotland or Wales and dying after
1775, likely at the home of grandson JOHN CHILDRESS (md Powell) on the JAMES
EDMONDSON plantation, upper Pedlar River, Blue Ridge Mts., Amherst Co., VA.
Sorry to have to repeat what Mark said, but it will be reverent to the
information I'm about to give. From the research work of Kathryn Hayes Johnson -

NOTE - Notice the name of HULME? Ever seen the name associated with the
Childress families in TN? I have.
I don't see anything in the WILL presentation from Ms Johnson, which states
that JOHN CHILDRESS was a "step-son" of JAMES EDMONSTON, but rather that he
was the SON-IN-LAW. This would mean to me, that James Edmonston's daughter
had married a JOHN CHILDRESS, which one at this point is not shown. I'm not an
attorney, but wouldn't a will say, "step-son" and not "son-in-law"? There
is a big difference here in the wording, don't you think? I've seen enough
original copies of wills to know the difference and it appears to be what it
means, "son-in-law", JOHN CHILDRESS. I don't care to question Mark Childress,
but, maybe Jay will respond, where did the interpretation for the will of
James Edmondson come from with ref. to "step-son", rather than "son-in-law"?

"Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in VA". The address above is for the
Index. See if you want, the names above - I'm going to make it easier for you
with the information, but read it for yourself, then make you own decision [if
you care], on whether or not JOSEPH CHILDRESS ever married the SARAH of whom
Mark referred to as having first married JOSEPH CHILDRESS. And of whom he
states died at age 43c in 1763. And furthermore he states, his widow, SARAH
CHILDRESS married as her 2nd husband, JAMES EDMONDSON. According to what is seen
so far, that would be impossible, since she was already married and widowed
when she married James Edmondson. According to these sources, she wasn't
married to a Childress.

Under the Index, there are entries for HAYES, HAYS, EDMONDSON (variants)
with reference to Sarah's two husbands, GEORGE HAYS and JAMES EDMONDSON,
including her HAYS sons.
According to the history of George HAYES and his wife SARAH DYER-HAYES, they
were shown to live in Augusta County, VA in the early 1700's. George HAYES
died there in 1747. His widow SARAH DYER-HAYES remarried and to JAMES
EDMUNDSON in 1749 and they moved to the head of Pedlar River in neighboring Amherst
Co, VA. The EDMUNDSON's then migrated to Wilkes County, NC taking many of
SARAH's children by GEORGE HAYES with them. SARAH DYER-HAYES EDMUNDSON was
known to have lived and died in Wilkes County, NC. The history compiled by the
descendants on the website above states the records were found on the
census, land, marriage and tax records in Ashe, Avery, Burke, Caldwell,
Transylvania, Watauga and Wilkes Counties of NC. also in KY and TN. There was no
mention that I could find of CHILDRESS other than the WILL of James Edmondson in
1792 and probated in 1793 in NC.
The known children for SARAH and her two marriages might reveal that perhaps
one daughter married a Joseph Childress, nothing was shown. However there
was a Sallie Edmondson as daughter of Sarah Dyer-Hayes- 2nd wife of JAMES
EDMONDSON. So far, what I've seen, without seeing the actual copy of the 1792
will, I would have to say more original research should be done. Without the
marriage to a Joseph Childress, the lineage is broken.. And I would recommend
original research for who Sarah's daughters married, apparently one of them
married a JOHN CHILDRESS, per the will above. Anything you want to say,
please go ahead, unless your all asleep by now:)

Hello List,
Back to old Mitchell Childress again:) I love the name "Mitchell" as a
Christian name, my family apparently does to. We have 5 cousins named Mitchell,
but, we have reason, our direct ancestry is thru Mitchell.
Could this be the reason for Mitchell Childress being named what he was?
Never saw another Mitchell Childress but him, after him, yes, but not before
him. Mitchell was born in 1750 according to his pension application for the
Rev. War. Lots of discussion and some pretty crazy explanations have come up
as to why he carried the Mitchell surname as a Christian name. Was the reason
due to why my Mitchell family used the name as a Christian name? In honor
of a Mitchell ancestor? Or just because they like the name? Could be both,
it was the reasoning with my bunch!
The same could be said for the REPPS (and variants) family couldn't it? How
many of you have seen REPPS in the Childress family? Enough to drive you
silly? I've read lots of messages on genforum, rootsweb, all over the web
asking about the name REAPS or REPPS and yep, Repps Childress. Even the series
called "Abraham Childers lll" in the Virginia Genealogist series devoted an
entire chapter to several or more Repps or Reps Childress and who his daddy and
grandfather were! The author of that series made a good case for the
ancestry for REPPS Childress. She concluded it had come from REPPS Jones, brother
of Thomas Jones, sons of Thomas Jones, SR. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm
doing this off the top of my head.
Lets see if I have this straight? Thomas Jones had two sons named Thomas
and Repps. Why the Repps name for a son? Cause Thomas married a REPPS, think
so? In the meantime, Thomas, father of Thomas and Repps Jones who married
Mary Repps (some say Mary), both brothers got married. Thomas, the son,
married and had LUCRESIA Jones. She married according to every source I've read,
HENRY "Childers". Henry had a Henry and a Thomas, both descendants apparently
used the spelling of their name, which was mostly shown as Childress as they
were known by it, as were their descendants. Don't hold me to that, but
land records certainly would dispute it and so would wills of the descendants,
one being John Childress of Nashville, TN fame.
Okay, back to the REPPS story. According to the VA Genealogist author, John
Childress who had REPPS and JOHN were living in VA. Lets stop right there
okay? See the name of one son? REPPS, namesake for his ancestor, Mary Repps
who married Thomas JONES.
Hopefully I've not confused you way to much, but in researching my Mitchell
family, I was interested in the name "BRANCH." My great great grandfather
was named BRANCH among other Christian names. So, as I poured over documented
lineages from the Thomas Branch family, I came upon something very
interesting, it caught my eye.
From the Descendants of 1LIONEL BRANCH born 1566 England, down to his
grandson, 3THOMAS BRANCH born 1623 in Henrico County, VA who married Elizabeth
Gough to one line, 4Matthew Branch, born 1661 Henrico who married Frances Ware to
5Elizabeth Branch who married Stephen WOODSON (born 1704 VA), I realized Mr.
Woodson was in the same family who married into the Abraham Childres (or
Childers) family in Henrico as were the Wares.
Now, lets go back to the 4th generation of BRANCH - who would be -
4Thomas Branch ll, who married Elizabeth Archer -
5Tabitha Branch born about 1695 Henrico County, VA and died 1752, ALBEMARLE
Parish, VA married HENRY MITCHELL born 1694 and died 1754. His father was a
Henry Mitchell. Tabitha's husband, Henry Mitchell's will is in Will book A,
pages 4-5.
6HENRY MITCHELL, JR. born 1718 Surry County, VA or Sussex married PRISCILLA
JONES*** in Sussex County, VA. - They had a son named REPPS MITCHELL among
other issue.
Now then, Priscilla JONES*** who married Henry Mitchell is a JONES,
descended from THOMAS JONES who had REPPS and THOMAS ll JONES.
Could it be possible that the VA Genealogist series author was correct in
her conclusion that a John Childress had a son named Repps Childress and was a
direct descendant of Thomas Jones SR who had Thomas and Repps Jones? The
name REPPS went thru the John Childress ancestry over and over again. So, did
Mitchell, was he descended from the same family of John Childress who had
John and Repps Childress in VA? Maybe this is just to easy? I believe it is
not only possible, but likely. Mitchell Childress could descend from the same
family as John Childress whose sons were named Repps and John Childress.
Sounds logical to me! IF Mitchell Childress was of the family of John Childress
in that part of VA who had sons named Repps Childress, then the association
would be obvious, the name of Mitchell and that being his Christian name.
There are sources for what I've written here. What we don't know is how
Mitchell Childress connects to the Jones, Branch, and Mitchell families in that
part of Virginia. The Branch and Jones family are documented as is the
Mitchell lineage connection. Might take a lot of work, but would be worth it for
Mitchell Childress descendants. Any comments or idea's anyone?
MaryJean
Dear List,
If any of you read the message by Dr. Joseph "Jay" Childress, he had posted
a message from the Childress-List (Mark Childress Papers). There was also
notation regarding Mitchell Childress and his projected lineage. Also, you
might have seen all the messages posted on various websites regarding the
ancestry of Mitchell Childress (b. 1750 VA, died 1840 TN). The Childress brothers
say Mitchell was not related in any way to JOHN Childress, who also came out
of VA and settled in TN (according to his pension record).
While reading thru my files on Webb, Childress and Ezell, I found some
interesting observation's and information.
According to several Webb descendants along with a Webb descendant, Ms.
Henson, there is evidence which might connect JOHN WEBB, father of HANNAH WEBB
(who married Mitchell Childress) to a CHILDRESS himself. Three reports I've
read say that JOHN WEBB, father of Hannah Webb Childress was married himself to
URSULA CHILDRESS. There's another report which states a later John WEBB
married a SARAH CHILDRESS. The latter were also from Wilkes County, NC.
Hannah WEBB, first wife of Mitchell CHILDRESS was the daughter of JOHN WEBB
and Ursula (some say, perhaps Childress). Her brothers were John, Francis,
Cuthbert and others. After the death of John Webb, father of Hannah Webb
Childress, the widow, Ursula and family migrated to KY. How did Mitchell
Childress meet Hannah Webb if she was living in KY? In NC, KY?
If Mitchell Childress, Rev. Vet was not related to the John Childress
(mentioned in Mark Childress Papers), then which one was this John Childress? Con?
You've done research in NC, what's your take on this?
"Wilkes County, NC - October 7, 1798" -
MITCHELL Childress of Knox County, TN deeded 95 Acres of Land in WIlkes
County, NC to his brother in law, Francis WEBB of Wilkes County, NC.
Witnessed By -
JOHN CHILDRESS*
John Flannagin
Cuthbert WEBB
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I can't recall what conclusion
if any was made reference Mitchell Childress and his witness, John Childress.
Did Mitchell have a son named John?
Further information on the WEBB families can be found in, Robert W. Ramsey's
(1964), "Carolina Cradle, Settlement of North West Carolina Frontier,
1747-1762". Additionally, the mention in the book discusses the Bryan Settlement
(1747/ 48) with maps of the area, SAMUEL DAVIS was there at that time. If you
recall, we discussed Samuel Davis and his relationship with Childress in NC.
Seems the Davis family were also living in Charlotte County, VA and then
migrated to NC or perhaps owned land in both places? A Davis if you recall,
adopted a Childress in NC. A Davis married a Childress in NC (see my earlier
messages regarding Davis and Childress in Childress Research-List archives).
I have a list of deeds from Wilkes County, NC abstracts, dated 1787-1814 for
the Webb family, the same ones who connect to Mitchell Childress and perhaps
the John Childress who was a witness to the deed above. These deeds
description of the land owned by the Webbs are in the same area's where some of the
NC Childress's settled and also owned land. I'll give the information in
another message.
You comments and or opinion are welcome.
