Dear List:
Below is a message to this list from Con Childress. Con brought to my
attention the name of CREED L. Childress from the gencom on rootsweb.com and from
the family data of Eldon J. Edgin. I've corresponded before with Eldon,
however, I did not know at the time, that his ancestor LINDSEY Childress, son of JOHN
Childress born 1759 had a son named CREED L. CHILDRESS or I didn't at the
time, see the importance of the name of CREED. If you read the message below
from Con, you can better understand where I am coming from and why I'm curious
about the naming pattern for the Christian name of CREED. - SEE -
http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/C/CHILDR...
In the meantime, after I reviewed the data from Eldon's gencom and through
correspondence and research with other descendants of the Childress, Stinnett,
Carter and Taylor families, I have so many questions of my own and for now,
they are somewhat of a mystery. If any of you descend from one of these I
mention, I would really like to kow your opinion or if you don't descend from these
mentioned, please, give me your opinion or theory if you have one.
Here is some of what I know at present - Corrections appreciated -
The first mention of the name CREED I was told and also read was from the
family of CREED HASKINS. According to this material, the HASKINS were
intermarried with the JONES and or TANNERS. For those of you who don't know why this is
important, I'll tell you.
Lucreshia JONES was said to be the daughter of THOMAS JONES whose brother was
REPPS JONES. The name REPS or REPPS has come down through the CHILDRESS
family and was used in various branches of CHILDRESS or CHILDERS. The REPPS name
came from MARY REPPS who was to have married the first THOMAS JONES, thus
became a Christian name for those in the Childress family.
Lucreshia JONES married HENRY CHILDERS (aka Childress in some records) and
their sons were HENRY who married Mary Farmer and THOMAS who was said to have
died young, due to the exchange of a land deed by his younger brother HENRY. I
have doubts of that, I believe THOMAS survived, but that's another story!
HENRY and Mary Farmer Childers or Childress (spelt three ways on his Will)
migrated to Lunenburg Co, VA due to his land grant and where he left his Will. His
eldest son was JOHN of whom migrated from VA to NC and finally to Nashville,
TN where his family is well documented. This JOHN left a Will dated about
1811, had a large family and his descendant was George Campbell CHILDRESS of Texas
fame. Hopefully you have the picture?
Back to HENRY Childers or Childress who married Lucreshia JONES, HENRY had a
brother named ABRAHAM Childers and later, records were shown that his surname
was spelt as CHILDRES, including deeds and his Albemarle County, VA Will
(1763/4) of which I have an original copy. Abraham was referred to in the Virginia
Genealogist as ABRAHAM CHILDERS lll (aka Childres) who married first,
Elizabeth CANNON, daughter of John CANNON and Elizabeth WOODSON. Not to complicate
this, the Woodsons and Cannons had much interaction with an earlier ABRAHAM who
could have been the grandfather or father of ABRAHAM lll.
In the 1763/4 Will of Abraham lll, a son is shown as CREED CHILDRESS whose
birth date is questionable, but he was baptized as age 17 or 18, placing his
birth about 1746. His sisters apparently thought highly of him, as most of them
named their sons or their grandsons were named CREED. Those were - CARTER,
MATTHEWS, TAYLOR and probably others. But the main interest to me other then
Matthew's and Taylor is the sister known as MARY ANN CHILDRESS, named in her
father's Will as MARY ANN CARTER.
Mary Ann CHILDRESS married SOLOMON CARTER about 1758-60, determined by Dick
Zieman (Carter descendant) due to the Rev. War Pension of their son, William
Carter, born 1760. Mary Ann and Solomon had a son named Abraham CARTER who
named two sons, CANNON and CREED Carter, thus the name came down through this
CARTER ancestry. Mary Ann's son PETER Carter married Elizabeth SANDIDGE whose own
family had already had interaction with CHILDRESS. PETER and Elizabeth
CARTER had KESIAH Carter and she became the second wife of ROBERT CHILDRESS in
1812, he being the son of JOHN CHILDRESS born 1759 and who died in Knox County, TN
1848 / 49. Apparently, they knew one another in Amherst County, Virginia,
because ROBERT was living in Wilkes Co, NC and then Knox County, TN when he was
first married to another, so that means he traveled all the way to Virginia to
marry Kesiah Carter while he lived in Knox County (TN).
So now, this brings us to the mystery at hand. Now that you have a somewhat
brief history of this Childress family, here is what I am so very curious
about. In many families, children are named for parents, grand parents and
ancestors. Such as CREED Childress born 1746. His sister, SOPHIA who married
Samuel TAYLOR, SR., named their son, CREED TAYLOR. This would seem natural to me,
a sister naming her son after her brother.
However, how do we account for this naming pattern? ROBERT (John, 1759) who
married KESIAH, a direct descendant of Abraham Childress lll does not name a
son, nor have I found the name CREED in their lineage (so far), nevertheless,
ROBERT'S brother, LINDSEY Childress (born 21 Mar 1795 Knox Co, TN) names HIS
fifth child, CREED L. CHILDRESS who was born 22 July 1826.(See Con's message
above) -

5) CREED THOMAS CHILDRESS, JR - Childress Genforum - Re: Childresses of Knox
County, TN - January 08, 1999 -
http://genforum.genealogy.com/childress/messages/227.html - As per the message -
I remember that our family had relative from Knox CO, TN; I remember JAMES
CHILDRESS, although could be JOHN CHILDRESS, without looking at family
documents. I've seen his picture, though, at a family reunion in May 1977, Marshfield,
MO. In any event, he had quite a few children, one of whom is CREED TAYLOR
CHILDRESS, born Dec 1849, in Cherokee Co, AL. CREED TAYLOR (Childress), and
wife HANNA LUCY HAINES CHILDRESS, had four children, ROBERT ELI, INDIAN
TERRITORY (TERRI for short), GEORGE ANIS and FRANK. ROBERT ELI (Childress) is my
grandfather. One of CREED TAYLOR (Childress) sisters settled in the Kanas City,
MO area where many of her descendants are. If I can find my family papers,
there's more - etc. - End -
NOTE - As you see from the message above in 1999, the message was posted by a
much later descendant and his name was CREED as apparently was his father, as
he was a JR.

*********************************************
Do you see the name pattern? These are not all I found with the name CREED
within the JOHN CHILDRESS (born 1759) family. Speaking of which, Eldon J.
Edgin's gencom is far more informative, I suggest you read it, as he gives sources
such the JAMES DeARMOND and NANCY B. CHILDRESS BIBLE from Knoxville, TN
Genealogical Library. Also the War of 1812 information for LINDSEY CHILDRESS born
1795 (son of JOHN), also census records from Knox Co, TN. Eldon believes
LINDSEY was married twice.
The question is this - WHY would the other SONS of JOHN CHILDRESS (b.1759)
rather than ROBERT CHILDRESS, whose wife KESIAH CARTER who was a direct
descendant of Abraham Childress lll and whose grandmother's brother was CREED
CHILDRESS, name their children and grandchildren after CREED CHILDRESS? And who
purportedly was NOT their ancestor's relation, as in brother to MARY ANN CHILDRESS
CARTER, daughter of ABRAHAM? Wouldn't it be more likely that KESIAH Carter
Childress name a son after her grandmother's (Mary Ann Childress Carter) brother?
Later, more to follow which is also curious within the family of JOHN
CHILDRESS. Please feel free to comment and to make any corrections. Thank you!

Hi Kay,
Thank you for all the Stinnett webpages and information! Right now, I'm
corresponding with a Stinnett descendant whose done extensive research in Amherst
County, VA, she to date has never found a Susannah Stinnett married to a
LAWSON in Amherst Co, VA. She has also checked the Heads of Household for Amherst
for the years 1783-1785 and NO Lawsons were in Amherst Co., 1810 show NO
Lawsons. She has checked all the sources (so far) available for Amherst. Found was
a Stinnett-Lawson marriage in TN during the 1850's. In other records,
conferring with Stinnett researchers, all were of the opinion that Susannah died
early, but that she had married BOTH John Childress and also Henry Childress, she
will let us know if she can find further proof of that.

Dear List -
RE: GEORGE CARTER and his association with a possible marriage to a MARY
CHILDRESS - A son named, CHILDRESS CARTER and a connection between DRURY CHILDRESS
and the GEORGE CARTER'S WILL dated 1806.
http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/C/CHILDR...
The above message dated July 9, 2005 from - Cyrene8(a)insightbb.com - was
asking me about MARY ANN CHILDRESS, daughter of Abraham Childress lll (aka
Childers) and his first wife, Elizabeth Cannon. The message question was in part as
follows -
"If SOLOMON CARTER was the husband of MARY CHILDRESS dtr of ABRAHAM, then who
was GEORGE CARTER who died in 1806, leaving wife MARY ANN (CHILDRESS), a
large family of grown children including a son CHILDRESS CARTER and a daughter
SUSANNA CARTER who married DRURY CHILDRESS?" - [See message above] -
I answered the message above with the information available, with regard to
the CARTER family, I also included data from Dick Zieman (see his messages on
the Carter genforum and his website) -ALSO see his current messages on the
Carter genforum regarding GEORGE CARTER and his possible wife, MARY CHILDRESS -
Dick has made note in his messages on that forum that the GEORGE Carter in
question was from a different branch of Carters and yet, there is the presence of
JOB Carter in the GEORGE CARTER will which would suggest something more than a
casual relationship. Please see Dick Zieman's messages so that you can
understand the situation better.
******************************************************************************
***********
My question is due to the above message and also from the Carter researchers,
one in particular I've been corresponding with [as mentioned above] and of
whom his work has been invaluable, Dick Zieman - From his email to me with his
permission - As follows -
SUBJECT - CHILDERS CARTER? - From Dick Zieman, December 3, 2005, private
email -
There is a 1806 WILL of one GEORGE CARTER in Buckingham County, VA where:
1. His wife is (probably) MARY CHILDRESS - Because of items two and three -
2. The will was contested by a DRURY CHILDRESS.
3. A son is mentioned as CHILDRESS CARTER.
3. The will was witnessed by a JOB CARTER and CHILDERS CARTER - besides the
spelling, a son could NOT witness a will in which he has a vital interest.
Sound familiar back to SOLOMON and MARY ANN, right next door in Amherst
County? Do I remember mention of the very unique CHILDERS? (We know Solomon had a
brother JOB as well as uncles and cousins of that name). Can you confirm this?
Dick - END

(D) JOHN CHILDRESS -
According to the original deeds, tithes, records from Childers-Childress
Family Association - And, VA Genealogist, By Alberta Marjorie Dennstedt, San
Diego, CA - "PROGENITORS and KINFOLK OF ABRAHAM CHILDERS lll" - While I do not, nor
do other seasoned Childress researchers I correspond with agree, Ms.
Dennstedt did good work, but, she did make mistakes. She does however, provide her
sources and she does make it known when she feels there is doubt or theory only,
which most of us do when original county records are burned as was the
situation with most of the records out of Buckingham Co, VA.
In the section - E. JOHN CHILDERS (ca 1689-176__ - The author has that John
married an Elizabeth whose parentage is unk., possibly Mosby..She notes that
JOHN did receive patents and that he sold land to his brother, ABRAHAM CHILDRESS
lll - JOHN did own land in Henrico, sold land in Goochland, Had a patent
August 1, 1745 for 400 acres in Goochland County on both sides of a branch of
Willis's River. This land eventually fell into BUCKINGHAM COUNTY.and the records
of that county have been burned. On 2 April 1747, JOHN of Albemarle County
was back in Henrico Co to sell to Hutchins Burton the remaining 100 acres of the
1734 Patent for E25. On another piece of land, Elizabeth his wife
relinquished her dower rights and the deed was recorded in April 1747.
In the article on JOHN, it is noted he had a son ABRAHAM CHILDRES (one S) and
he did give him land - There were lands sold and bought (in the section of
the VA Gene.) until we see that there were witnesses to JOHN CHILDRES on Oct 27,
1760 giving land to his son ABRAHAM and also made gifts to two sons, (1751)
JOHN, planter who gave land to HIS son, FRANCIS, who was then living in St.
Ann's Parish, on the north fork of the Blackwater River bounded by Col. Bolling.
The witnesses to JOHN giving his son ABRAHAM land for many good services were
- WILLIS CHILDERS, After that time, the land was in BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA -
The author surmises that JOHN was about 72 in 1781 and most likely died
afterwards and that a portion of the 1764 Buckingham County tithable list, which
was found in Prince Edward County many years ago shows ABRAHAM CHILDERS with one
tithe and 250 acres, FRANCIS CHILDERS with one tithe and 200 acres and JOHN
CHILDERS with two tithes, including Negro Hannah and 415 acres. The 1773 and
1774 tithable lists show FRANCIS CHILDERS with two tithes, JOHN CHILDERS with
two tithes and WILLIS CHILDERS with one tithe.
In 1800 there were FOUR CHILDRESS on the tax list: JOHN CHILDRESS - DRURY
CHILDRESS** with two whites, four homes and five Negroes, FRANCIS WARE CHILDRESS
with one horse and one Negro, JOHN CHILDRESS with two horses and JAMES
CHILDRES with no horses or Negroes. The names of JOHN B. T. CHILDRESS, JOHN
CHILDRESS and DRURY CHILDRESS** appear in an account book dated 1802-03 of John
EPPERSON who owned tabacco warehouses and a general store in Planterstown. JOHN and
Elizabeth had at least three children (per the author), - JOHN perhaps
married JANE WARE - ABRAHAM, perhaps married SUSAN GOOLSBY or GOLDSBY and FRANCIS -
The author gives a section on JOHN's son, also named JOHN, but JR. and states
that he married JANE WARE, daughter of JACOB WARE There is mention of a
FRANCIS WARE CHILDERS of Buckingham County on August 14, 1792 and of whom patented
122 acres on both sides of Buck and Doe Creek, off WILLIS MT.
NOTE - I have used the spelling the author used, but it's highly suggested
those above were CHILDRES or CHILDRESS as later records indicate the surname was
CHILDRES or CHILDRESS. We could argue this fact, but it is my belief the
name was CHILDRES or CHILDRESS.
OF NOTE - This is by no means all of the series by Ms. Dennstedt - She gives
wills book, deeds, tithe and their sources. If you need those, let me know.
The series is a publication of over 50 pages, just on ABRAHAM lll and his
family.
**DRURY CHILDRESS - I believe DRURY had a sister named MARY and that it is
suggested that she married GEORGE CARTER who left dated 1806 Buckingham Co, VA,
a will naming her and her children, one being CHILDRESS CARTER. Dick Zieman
said that SONS who had a vital interest in a will could not WITNESS. Why was
DRURY CHILDRESS protesting the will of GEORGE CARTER?
SEE: CARTER GENFORUM MESSAGE 17419 - DICK ZIEMAN -

H) BENJAMIN ca 1782 - Buckingham Co, VA
I) CATHERINE ca 1784 - Buckingham Co, VA

OF NOTE - In the will which can be read on the CARTER forum message by Dick
Zieman - as given above - SUSANNA is named in the will of her father as,
SUSANNA CHILDRESS in which he leaves her two Negro.
Also, if you note the list of children above, SUSANNAH is shown to be born
about 1772c and married to a CHILDRESS, suggested to be DRURY CHILDRESS, but who
was Susannah's mother's maiden name and what was her association with DRURY
CHILDRESS? Or do I have this turned around. Was Susanna CARTER married to
DRURY CHILDRESS? Who was his father? Most likely, he comes from JOHN, brother
of ABRAHAM lll. I say this due to the CARTER connection already established
with Abraham lll's daughter, MARY ANN and SOLOMON CARTER. DRURY CHILDRESS it
seems from what records are available was around the area of VA and KY by 1796,
if that was the same DRURY Childress? IF not, then he does appear in the
census for 1800 - 1820. The key will be to establish who the mother of Susannah
CHILDRESS was and who exactly did Susannah marry, which most likely, to me at
least, was DRURY CHILDRESS. Don't hold me to that one! But if you know more,
please share with us.
4). From CARTER GENFORUM message - 7428, George Waldron - Anyone researching
these Buckingham Co, VA Carter's?, GEORGE CARTER, wife MARY? George died
sometime between April 19, 1806 in Buckingham Co, VA - Children were - JOSEPH -
GEORGE - HENRY - JOHN - CHILDRESS - BENJAMIN - WILLIAM - KATEY - POLLY - SUSANNA
CARTER CHILDRESS** -
** If you read the message to this list you will see where the writer asks
GEORGE CARTER and his wife MARY ANN CHILDRESS and their daughter being married
to DURY CHILDRESS, her name was SUSANNA.
Susanna was married to a CHILDRESS. Was she married to DRURY CHILDRESS?
What about GEORGE CARTER'S wife? Was she also a CHILDRESS? What was the
connection between DRURY CHILDRESS and the mother of SUSANNA CARTER CHILDRESS? I
know this is complicated, you can count on it, especially in light of the SOLOMON
CARTER marriage to ABRAHAM CHILDRESS lll's daughter, MARY ANN.
If any of you can give your input or an opinion, we would appreciate it as I
am sure the Carters would. Please do read the messages on the Carter forum so
that you get an idea of what is available and especially the messages from
DICK ZIEMAN and those who wrote messages on these lines. Anyone here know more?
Thanks list.
