Hi Con and list,
Your comments were interesting reference Joel Childress and his trade of "hatter". While that might be true about him learning [hatter] from the religious group you mentioned, seems likely to me, since it was court ordered that his guardian teach him a trade, I would think it was the Childress family. I believe he lived with the Childresses rather than a relgious group. Maybe you can take it on and find out for us!
Since Andrew Jackson was also orphaned, we don't know all that much about his Jackson's, just speculation as I see it. However, for instance, what I do know I've read in the "Colonial Records of North Carolina" [NC Secretary of State, Wm L. Saunders]. During the War of 1812, he [Jackson] did have business relationships with Childresses, in particuliar, Thomas Childress in AL, especially during the War of 1812. You can read about Thomas Childress and Andrew Jackson in the messages I wrote in the Childress Research-archives.
The Whitsett's were in NC and were in fact, working [NC government] right along side of the Polks who were the ancestor's of President James K. Polk. The working relationship most likely extended from NC into what became TN. It was this connection [and probably other reasons] as to why Andrew Jackson suggested Sarah Childress marry James K. Polk to begin with. This is a guess, but Jackson most likely knew of the Whitsett - Polk professional relationship while they were in NC. During those times, it was a hot bed of political movers and shakers and they were in that mix.
It's my opinion from the documents I've read, that the Whitsett/Thompson families of VA and NC [later, TN and AL] were the influence behind why Andrew Jackson suggested to James K. Knox that he marry Sarah Childress.
MaryJean
Lee and list,
It is most likely that Joel learned to be a hatter in Stokes Co. NC where
he was raised. A good guess would be via the Moravians to whom the
Childresses, among whom he was raised, had very strong connections. If
someone wants to wade through the entire Moravian records, which are quite
extensive, there might be a reference to him, especially if he somehow got
to work with the Brothers -- single young Moravian men who were learning
trades. It is also likely this association with the Moravians, whatever it
was, was why Sarah and Susan were sent to the Salem Female Academy. One
did not pack young daughters off to unknown places to be educated without
connections there -- not in that day and time.
Between the time that Joel was listed as a hatter in his murder trial and
his death, Joel became a wealthy and prominent member of the local society.
Anson and Fanny Nelson's book Sarah Childress Polk indicates on page 4
" When Sarah was twelve or thirteen years old she and her sister were sent
to Nashville, to attend the private school of Mr. Abercrombie, a noted
teacher of that day. They also took piano lessons from his daughter. This
was a rare accomplishment for that early time, the facilities for which
gave a peculiar reputation to the school.
General Jackson was then living in Nashville. He was in the zenith of his
military glory, and his adopted city rejoiced in the lustre reflected upon
her by this distinguished citizen. The little pupils were boarding in the
family of Colonel Butler, one of his staff officers, and so saw him
frequently. Mrs. Polk remembered distinctly a very; brillant ball in the
General's house, at which she was a guest."
Other references also indicate that the young Childress girls were well
acquainted with Andrew Jackson, and would have been invited to many social
functions at his home and in the area. Whether at Andrew Jackson's home or
at some other social function they atttended, it is fairly certain that
Sarah and James Polk met and began their romance there in TN and not via
any outside family or other connections.
It is also highly unlikely that there were any significant Jackson-Polk
connection prior to TN. Andrew Jackson became a self made man in part by
escaping from the Mecklenburg NC area where he was orphaned, and not
through connections there.
While everyone seems to want to be associated with Joel Childress, these
associations must be based on data not speculation. There are still
important facts regarding Joel to be found out. In particular, I have yet
to see any reasonable explanation as to how he met and married into the
Whitsett family. It was definitely not through the Polks or Jacksons --
all of that came later.

Hello all,
I have changed my email address from NOMONEY6(a)BELLSOUTH.NET to
NOMONEY(a)ATT.NET. I dropped the number 6 and changed servers. Please use the new email address, starting now. Thank you,
Kay
I just got my upgrade to 25 markers on the DNA test under the Sanders surname
and did a search to see if any other tester matched up. I found one person
who matches almost perfectly with my DNA and has a surname that I have no record
of in my genealogy datafile. The only thing that links us is that his
ancestors lived in North Carolina. That is where my Childress surname is from. Now I
have to try and figure out how to contact the person, lol.
Bob
I took the DNA and like yourself I am baffled at the results. Out of all the
people that participated not one has proven a link to my earliest know
ancestor. As far as [ Viking, English, Irish etc ] I really believe some one is
"generalizing". I have to confess they lost me a long time ago.

Hi Lee and list -
Thank you! I knew I had a recollection of other's with the profession of
Hatter! The Childress's in SC is a big clue. John Lee Polk is 7th generation
of the Pollock family who changed their name to Polk. The interesting thing is
that John Lee Polk was born in York County, SC on November 1774, died as you
said, July 1809, buried in Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery. He was
son of Colonel Ezekiel Franklin Polk b. DEC 7, 1747 in Carlisle Penn. He
died 1824 in Hardeman Co., TN He married Mary Winslow Wilson in 1769 in
Carlisle Penn. This Polk family whose connected to President James Knox Polk,
husband of Sarah Childress, are the same ones who were behind the Mecklenburg Co.,
NC Declaration of Independence. I have the Polk family tree all the way
back to Scotland, where they were called dePollock. In my earlier messages to
the list, I mentioned the Pollocks and their holding the deed to New Bern, NC
which they got from Baron DeGraffenreid when he left NC for Switzerland and
never returned to America. The Pollocks who became Polk, were the richest
land holders in NC along with being the largest slave holders ["Colonial Records
of NC," Col. Wm. L. Saunders, NC Secretary of State]. It was in NC where
the Polks were working along side John Whitsett or Whitsitt. I believe he was
the father of Elizabeth Whitsett who married Joel Childress.
So, as you can see, there were not only SC connections [Polk] but TN. I
wonder if there was some earlier association of this family of Polk with the
Childress's who also lived in SC and of whom had the same profession as Hatter.
What's your opinion Lee? Comments anyone?
Thanks again for the info!
MaryJean
List,
Joel Childress was not the only Childress who was a hatter.
There was a John Childress in Greenville District, South Carolina, who
executed deeds recorded respectively August 17, 1789, December 13, 1790 and
September 13, 1791, who is described in the deeds as a hatter. An uncle of
James Knox Polk, moreover, John Lee Polk, was a hatter. John Lee died in
Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on July 9, 1809. In his will he left a
set of hatter's tools to his apprentice Briss Miller. Perhaps he was the
master who taught Joel his trade and that is how his daughter Sarah met and
married James Knox Polk.

Concerning the Viking thingy one needs to look at the time line! Just about
anyone with roots from Russia to the south of France is bound to have some
viking blood lines
The server in question still is having "hiccups" so anybody on this list who
is also on other lists that suddenly stopped having posts the last week please
bear with Rootsweb. Do not re-subscribe to any list thinking you have been
booted off it for some reason, you'll start receiving email from the list,
sooner or later.
The workers at Rootsweb apparently didn't think my suggestion of doing a
gravity test on the problem server from table height as a good remedy but admitted
it would definitely put the problematic device out of its misery:) Oh well, I
tried, loll.
Bob
Hi Bob and list,
Thank you very much! For one whose had the "DNA" experience, I appreciate
your sharing with us. You may be a Sanders, but your very much a Childress:)
Too bad neither of us can't donate [our DNA] for the Childress/ers/rey DNA
project. This is one time I wish I had a sample of my Dad's DNA so that I could
use it for the project. In the meantime, thank you for your opinion and
knowledge of the experience!
I realize this list is for Childress and variants, however, many here carry
other surnames although they ARE a Childress/ers/rey. Your being a Sanders and
I being a double Saunders/Sanders while also being a Childress is unusual:)
Thank you for sharing the Sanders info. Speaking of which, my line [one of
them] of Saunders out of VA (later dropped the U) thru those they married,
connect to the more than a few Childress's. My Saunders married the Webbs,
Robertson's, Phillips, Thompsons, and these families intermarried and connect to the
Childress's, as far as I can see, at least three Childress lines. Your friend
Sanders, might be the same lineage as mine, it connects to Bysshe and
LaZouche, which goes back to Edward lll according to documentation, further study is
being done, however! My one Saunders line and the one I'm talking about, came
in from England on the Safety in the year of 1635, landing in Jamestown,
Virginia. It was thru this branch of my family that connects to the Childress's!
This has given me a better advantage in regard to at least four Childress
branches and my Saunders are on the maternal side of my tree, thru my mother! My
Dad would have gotten a kick out of that:) Small world isn't it Bob?
Sorry about the rootsweb problem, hopefully, the data can be retrieved! Any
new updates on DNA, let us know! Thanks again!
MaryJean
My father William Charles Childress served in WWII as a Marine; he was
wounded and sent to a hospital for a long time in Seattle; we have his name on the
Memory Walk at the Admiral Nimitz Museum in Friedrichsburg, Texas.
Kathleen Holt
Hi MaryJean and list
Since my surname is not Childress I am going to stay away from commenting on
who y'all came from:) I have taken the DNA test for my own surname, starting
with the cheapest test, 12 markers, and now am waiting for the 25 and 37 marker
results. The more markers tested, the closer they can come to narrowing down
the country one comes from. What was surprising to me from just the 12 marker
results is that it shows that my Dad was wrong. He had always told us we were
1/2 English, 1/4 Scot and 1/4 French. Now it turns out my line is mainly
English, Scot, and IRISH!!!!
When I get the total upgrade to 37 markers it will narrow it down quite a bit
more.
My 12 markers matched up with nobody else in the Sanders group but was close
enough to another person that he contacted me for help with his Sanders who he
couldn't trace back any farther than 1850. We did find where his ancestors
lived in the same county as mine and he has since started researching that
county. I think I know our link and gave him my ideas. If he can find the "link" he
will be able to trace back to King Edward III of England, which would be cool.
The reason I'm telling this is that even with my limited knowledge of DNA
testing it is impossible to give any definitive conclusions based on the testing.
It only shows comparisons of tests showing what country is predominate and
also shows one who else who has tested matches up. No way does it say what their
ancestors profession was or anything like that.
Anybody can look at the results and make any conclusion they want, it just
doesn't make it correct, even if that person says it is. If I were to do that
then I can say that because I matched up with another DNA from Russia (which I
did) therefore I am related to the Czars. Quite a jump to conclusion, and
illogical.
By the way, one of the servers at Rootsweb bit the dust last Friday, it is
called lists2 server. The Sanders-DNA is on that server so no messages could be
posted to it. They finally have revived the server (kinda) and messages are
now being sent that are a week old. I have gotten almost 200 messages since last
night from the lists I administer, such joy:(
Bob Sanders
Hi Kay and list,
I really enjoyed reading your message! Also for the documentation and
sources, very interesting and good to have. The info from John Childress in England
was informative. I've not seen this before except for reading excerpts. Mr.
Childress brought up some interesting items about our name and origin. He
also mentioned the Scots and in particular, the Stewart's. I have some data on
the Childers/ress connection he spoke of and will gladly leave the information
in another message. I believe it's in relation to the Childers-Carr family in
England.
As a Childress myself, I'm torn between what to believe and what the truth
may or may not be. What I do know is what I've personally researched and been
able to prove thru documentation. I have files full of letters from Childress
researchers and their opinion regarding our surname, whether it be Childers,
Childress, Childrey or any other variant.
At this point, it seems to me at least, that the DNA project and our ancestry
is being based on Joel Childress's tombstone and what was engraved on it. I
know I'm tired of reading and hearing about the tombstone, so I will try to
make my comments brief about it.
Grouping the DNA of the Childers/Childress/Childrey and etc. into groups of
either Viking, OR Scottish is redundant. It makes no logical sense to me!
According to Mark and Gary Childress [Childress-List], the tombstone said that
Joel's father had come from WALES in 1745, they [nephews], were not positive of
the last part of the date, but decided on "45." Now Mark and Gary have
decided that all the rest of the Childress's [and variants] are "Vikings" and the
few who are left are from "Scotland"? Did I read that right? Because why? How
did the DNA project come to this conclusion? From all the historical data
I've read, the Scots basically WERE in the mix with the ancient Vikings! The
account of the ancient Celtic warriors called "Viking," it is said that the
Norwegians and Danes first took possession of the northern and western inland of
Scotland, setting up their own kingdoms, which has given a Norse element to
these lands ever since. They set up bases in Shetlands, Orkney, and the Isle of
Man ever since. From there they were able to launch raids on Scotland,
Ireland and England and even France. The annuals of Ulster charted the Viking
progress, in 795, they came to Ireland as sea-borne raiders. It was said they took
native women with them, so it's probable there were children from these
raids, with blood of Vikings and of Scot.
If the Vikings were literally raiding all the British Isles, then how can the
Childress/Childers and Childrey's be grouped as EITHER "Viking" OR "Scottish"
when they were co-mingled thousands of years ago to begin with? This isn't
off a tombstone, it's fact.
According to the DNA tests, there are those matching with both surnames,
Childers and Childress, then what does this tell us? Both Gary and Mark
Childress's messages have given the list of names and matches. From an April 30, 2003,
message with the latest DNA test results what arose from the implications for
the "Viking" Childress/Childers, we see their observations. They list the
preponderance of evidence which they say supports a provisional reconstructed
lineage for say Pleasant Childress who came from KY, as son of John Jr, son of
John Sr, both of Willis Creek VA, son of Abraham "Childress," son of Abraham
"Childers/Childress, the Emigrant". They label this line as "Viking." They
mention the "other" founders of the Childers/Childress's [not the Scottish side]
as "Philemon and "Thomas the Reluctant", whose descendants compose the late
17th Century migrations to VA. Did I miss something? Where did they come up
with "the Reluctant"? I apologize, I really died laughing over that one!
As for their occupation being the biggest clue as to IF they were "Scots" or
"Vikings," their trade would be according to the time in which they lived.
From what I've read, the Childers and Childress's were in trade, planters,
leather goods and etc. I don't find this unusual or proof that one branch was not
connected due to their occupation. This was a very young country then, just
how many different type professions could a man have, unless he was
independently wealthy?
From the DNA project we read that, they have grouped all the Childers and
Childress's as "Viking" and even given them an ancestry back to the very ones
they professed on their list and who were not remotely connected to anyone named
"Childress." Some who took the DNA, they even suggest "assumed" the
surname! As a woman whose maternal ancestry is so Scottish, I dream of Tartans, I
must say, these "Viking" Childers/Childress's being a different race than the
"Scottish" Childress is totally confusing! I haven't seen other DNA lists but a
few, but I doubt they would go to this length to separate those who bear their
surname. What of the data out of Scotland and England? The name spelling
changes constantly, even Gary and Mark have "Childers" as the spelling for the
"Scottish" ancestor for several of them, including Gary and Mark's. True, Kay's
data out of Scotland and England is proof that the surnames of Childers and
Childress were in England and Scotland. War could have been a reason many left
their homeland and ventured as soldiers to other countries, perhaps it was
this reason the Childress/Childers/rey left their home for Scotland. There are
place names for Childers and Childrey in both England and other countries. It
could also have been for religious reasons, which many Scots fled from Scotland
or were sent to the colonies as deportee's. No matter where our ancestor's
came from, It's my opinion they were in England to begin with and later,
migrated to other parts of the British Isles.
There are so many questions regarding our Childers/ress/rey's in Europe
during that time. It is my opinion, to group the surname [Childress, Childers and
Childress] at this stage is not conducive to the reality of the truth. Like
Kay, I welcome your opinion and comments. How many of you have taken the DNA
test? I would really enjoy knowing. What do you'll think, what is your opinion
as a Childers/Childress/Childrey?

OOPs I seem to have post a fauz pas :) My Childress male line died out in 1870,
not 1780. Looks like one of my DNA markers has Dyslexia. Sorry for the mis type.
......K
Hi LIst
I agree with all those who posted their comments about the DNA, but my
question is: How does a geneticist pick out the Childress/Childers marker from
all the other dna markers we all have in our gene pool? The dna marker that is
being researched, may be a dna marker that came from DNA Eve found in Africa,
quite a number of years ago. I am a convoluted Childress sometimes and then I
become a convoluted Childers, I am now back to being a convoluted Childress,
by the surname that has come up. Not yet a Childrey or a Childre or Childres.
The further back in History I go, the more the Surname swings back and forth.
Before long I will have a dna of the mammal that swings by his tail and it
might just be a Childers/Childress/ Childres/Childrey and any other spelling
that might be acceptable. My nearest Childress male relative was born c1845.
And the male line died out c1780. Since I am 37.5% Cherokee and 62.5% other.
Other being: A gene pool made up of all the DNA markers that the Celts picked
up on their journey toward Anglo Saxon Land now called Angland=England. I
think that makes me a VIKING, NORSEMAN, ANGLO-SAXON, GAUL, PICT, CELT, WELSH,
SCOT, NORMAN, FRENCH, ENGLISH, GERMAN AND CAN'T TELL CHILDRESS, CHILDERS, and
any variation there of. Having said all this and while the DNA project is an
interesting idea, the grouping, in my educated opinion, is premature. Thank
you for your attention......kay
I think that is a grand idea! My ancestor, ZAchariah D. or ZD
Childers/Childress was in the Civil war as a confederate. He was captured and was taken
to Andersonville Prison. He died there. I have sent his records to the
Andersonville National Park. They have so many that died there that are
unidentified in the records. They were very happy to recieve ZD's records.
