TYLER'S QUARTERLY MAGAZINE pp. 216-7
NICHOLAS PERKINS married SARAH CHILDERS and died about
1711.
His will, written June 13, 1711, and proven February 2,
1712, is found in the Henrico Records, 1710-1714. His
widow, SARAH PERKINS, also left a will which was
presented to the Henrico court in January 1722. SARAH
PERKINS' will is referred to on page 226 of the Minute
Book of Henrico County from November 1719 to December
1724.
HENRICO CO. VA. WILLS ADDENDA by Weisiger p. 11
Court 7 January 1722 p. 226
Will of SARAH PERKINS presented by Abraham Perkins, her
executor & proved by Edward Enroughty & Thomas Childers,
a Quaker; Thomas Childers & Constant Perkins, security.
THE DESCENDANTS OF NICHOLAS PERKINS by William Hall
NICHOLAS PERKINS (see p. 4), born about 1647, died about
1712, Henrico Co., Va. After his father's death he moved
from Charles City County with his mother and stepfather
and settled in Henrico County where he spent the rest of
his life. He was a planter, owned 500 acres in 1705,
served on juries, appraised estates, and was at times
called upon to administer estates. As he was the
ancestor of most of the PERKINS descendants listed in
this compilation, the references to him in the original
records are given here in some detail. In 1674 (when he
was 27) he and Philemon Childers who was to become his
Brother-in -law) patented 537 acres of land. The patent
on p. 530 Land Patents Book. 6 (1666-1679) :
On January 31, 1680, NICHOLAS PERKINS deeded the upper
half (268 1/2 acres of this 537 acre tract they patented
together in 1674 to Philemon Childers. He signed this
deed with his mark ("N") just as he signed the deed of
1703 and his will in 1712 with his mark. This deed of
1680 was witnessed by George Lynn and Hugh Davis and was
recorded April 1, 1681, p. 161 Part I Henrico Records
1677-1692.
NICHOLAS PERKINS, Philemon Childers, Abraham Childers,
and Thomas Holmes appraised the estate of Samuel Polley,
Oct. 1, 1692 (p. 342 Henrico Records 1688-1697). He was
a member of the coroner's jury inquiring into the death
of William Arlington, and signed the report with his
mark "N" Dec. 8. 1639 (p. 454 ibid.).
In January 1710 NICHOLAS PERKINS, John Atkins, Philemon
Childers, and Philemon Childers, Jr...were appointed to
appraise the estate of Sarah Mathews (p 34 part 2
Henrico Records 1710-1714).
Although the records found do not prove that the wife of
NICHOLAS PERKINS was SARAH CHILDERS, nevertheless the
evidence clearly indicates that she was. She was
probably the daughter of Abram Childers who was born
about 1630 in England and died in Virginia prior to
1649, leaving a daughter, a son Philemon Childers, a son
Abraham Childers, and another son. The fact that SARAH,
the wife of NICHOLAS PERKINS, named a son Abraham and
another son Philemon certainly indicates that she was
SARAH CHILDERS.

Hey Mary Jean,
I am not sure if they do or not. My Wilkerson line is a huge puzzle for me.
My Great Great grandfather was Andrew J. Wilkerson born February 13, 1850, in
Polk County, TN. His father was (according to a Guin Miller roll app) also
Andrew J. Wilkerson. I found this Andrew J.Jr., the 1850 census being 6
months old, only with his mother Melvina? Wilkerson and siblings Emoline born
1840, Sarah born 1842, Lucinda born 1845 and William born 1847. Andrew Jr
married Sarah Ann Kell, a Cherokee and they had my Great Grandmother Iley Ann
Wilkerson. That was her Indian name but she also used Ollie Mae Wilkerson.
We seem to think the J was for Jefferson because Iley Ann had a brother
Jefferson. It may be that Andrew J was also Cherokee because I found some
other men in OK with that name but so far nothing else. When the Cherokee by
Blood indexes where being published, the workers went on strike so most of
the Wilkerson/ Wilkinson where left out.
I am also interested about this William Marion Childress and Lee can correct
me if I get this wrong.......too late to think but we have a Richard Marion
Childress and also a Richard Marion Parrish who was born 1836.
Thanks Sweety for answering and ANY help on these Wilkersons.........please
please!
Linda Sue
Hey........I know this is the Childress list and all but can you do me a
favor?
Do you have anymore info about this Wilkerson/Wilkinson family?
I am looking for an Andrew J. Wilkerson born about 1825-1830 either in
Tennessee or North Carolina.
Thanks!
Linda Sue
Hi Kay,
Reference - William Childress Sr of Charlotte and Mecklenburg Co's in VA -
Thank you for responding to Dorothy Harkins questions about William Childress
Sr. I realize that many websites and endless info has so many errors within
this branch of Childress! I too believe I descend from William Childress Sr
who married Nancy Wilkerson, sometimes spelt Wilkinson. To add to this, I
have documented sources from a Wilkerson History and the Nancy was just
"Nancy" and not the additional double name. Nancy was on the will of her
father as "Nancy Childress". Dorothy and I both correspond with the
researcher who did the history and it's fantastically written, with
documented sources, not online, but book form.
I think "tradition" got it started that William Childress was married to a
Nancy Jane "Hanks". The original census's for Mecklenburg Co VA for 1820
have William with wife and 5 children. Also, his mother, Jane Childress who
was widowed twice, was named "Jane Hamblin" and living next door to William.
William's brother, Jesse Childress was also in the Mecklenburg Co VA Census
for 1820. The 1830 has William with wife and three more children, making 8
children and wife, also included, in my opinion, is Jane Childress Hamblin in
the HH. I did the microfilm at the GA Archives in Atlanta GA and made
copies, I also purchased the 1820 & 1830 printed census's for further proof.
The problem also was the fact, that many researchers had already determined
William Childress didn't have but FIVE children and so that left out my
ancestor named Thomas Childress. However, Thomas, I truly believe was
William's son. After the 1830 census for Mecklenburg, this Childress branch
migrated to Caldwell Co KY, right before the 1840 KY Census, my Thomas is
living 2 doors up from William and Nancy Childress in the 1840 Caldwell
census. Also my Thomas married Zelphia Ezell in Caldwell Co 1842. The
Ezells are my ancestor's and they had left Mecklenburg Co VA for Caldwell,
where Zelphia's father, Rev Balaam Ezell (an old ARW soldier and Baptist
minister) had founded the Muddy Forks Baptist Church.
I believe the Childress migration to Caldwell Co was two fold. First, due to
a Wilkerson - Blank connection, both being sisters and also the Ezells, my
ancestors. FYI, the Ezell family married at least 4 times into the Childress
family. Twice in TN and once in VA and once in KY, all coming from the same
branch of Ezell from a common ancestry. William Childress who married Nancy
Wilkerson, his sister, Sarah named Sally, married Rev Balaam Ezell Sr's son,
also named Balaam Ezell, but Jr. She was too young to marry according to the
Mecklenburg Co VA marriage record (Bel Wise, author) and Jane (her mother)
gave her permission.
The complications of this branch of Childress were intermingled with
Hamblin's - Yancey (of which I am maternally a double descendant!) - Jones,
Mayes, Vaughn's and other well known names in Lunenburg, Mecklenburg and
Charlotte Co's in VA. They all appear in the 1811 Will of Thomas Hamblin,
second husband of JANE Childress, widow of Benedict, sometimes shown as
"Richard" Childress. Thomas Hamblin is also my ancestor! He first married
Elizabeth Seat and he was widowed when he married the young Jane Childress.
Her name was said to be "Burton". I've searched original records for some
link to Burton, have some leads, but not enough to say for certain that JANE
sometimes Jean was a BURTON.
William and Jesse Childress were brothers and had three sisters. All of them
were children when their father died without a will, leaving young JANE
Childress in a mess! This was 1794c and I have all the original documents
regarding it all. They lived in Charlotte Co along with Jeremiah Childress
Sr, he was Benedict's (Richard?) Childresses grandfather and in his will
receiving 100 acres of land, suggesting to me that perhaps Benedict's father
had died before the writing of Jeremiah Sr's 1790 Will. List member Ted
Childress had documents on the Charlotte Co Childresses, he shared those with
me and he agreed that Benedict was probably the son of a deceased son of
Jeremiah Childress Sr. The other sons of Jeremiah, per his will were
Benjamin, William and Jeremiah Jr. Any of them could have been Benedict's
father. Let me also say, none of the brothers were proved to be Benedict's
father at this writing, unless someone has discovered proof unknown to me!
William Childress son of Jeremiah Sr could have been the father of Benedict,
but there was no inventory or will in Charlotte Co which survived for a
Willliam of the right age. William and Benjamin, sons of Jeremiah Sr were
bondsman for JANE Childress, widow when she had to get the guardianship
papers for her underaged children. William Jr was the eldest, followed by
his sisters and finally, Jesse (born 1792c) who married Lucy Jackson,
daughter of an old war vet who lived in TN. Jesse and Lucy's marriage was
witnessed by a William Childress, either brother or uncle. All the marriages
of JANE and Benedict (Richard?) were witnessed by a William Childress and
also my ancestor, Rev Balaam Ezell, who also was the minister for many
marriages in VA. My Ezells were of French ancestry and were in VA very
early, having marriages to Childresses and other links to them both thru
marriage and professionally.
So many websites/pages and etc have William Childress's father as a William
who married Nancy Jane Burton. I've only seen two William marriages in
Charlotte Co and neither were Burton. There was a Burton-Childress marriage
and this VA branch which I believe settled in NC first, this part of NC
became Sullivan CO TN. But to my knowledge, they are not the same branch,
but seem to be mentioned as such! I do have some leads with a Burton -
Childress connection, but, right now, just theory.
Another old time, well respected researcher and Childress descendant thought
perhaps that William, son of Benedict, grandson of Jeremiah Sr was descended
from the brother of Henry Childers/ress who married Mary Farmer and lived in
Lunenburg. I've not dismissed that idea either, but it is theory. Henry had
a brother named Thomas and who knows? I've not found Thomas's children in
the records, but there were many Thomas's scattered around VA during the time
before the ARW.
I have the original copy of William Childress (born 1785 VA) signature, when
he signed his War of 1812 Bounty papers out of Caldwell CO KY. I have also
done all census's for him off microfilm and also have copies of book records
for him. He never left Caldwell Co and is buried there as Kay said, along
with Nancy, his wife.
I've never located a Will or Inventory for William Childress in Caldwell CO
KY. It's like he never existed in that place! If anyone has anything they
might have located, please let Dorothy and I know! I know that William tried
to receive land for his part in the War of 1812, but I have no proof he
received land in KY. The only Childress in that part of Ky who many to
believe was also William's son was a Richard Childress who recieved, shortly
after William's death, 15 acres along the Muddy Fork area of KY. Richard is
in a family picture I have and my great grandfather, Richard William
Childress is also in the photo. William Sr was also witness and bondsman for
a legal document for the widow of William Childress, son of William SR. This
suggests to me a definate connection. And by the way, the Richard Childress
was not the father of my Richard Wm Childress, Thomas was Richard's father.
My Thomas Childress who married 2nd Zelphia Ezell (my ancestry) was a CSA Pvt
during the Civil War out of KY, he had many children and ended up in TN for
the 1870 Census and died there, his wife, Zelphia already had passed away. I
believe he migrated to TN to be near other Ezell relatives, also, some of
whom had already married Childresses, just my opinion.
I'm glad Kay posted info and corrections for this branch of Childress.
There's been so much misinformation! Benedict was not son of Jeremiah and
to my knowledge, he was not the son of Jeremiah JR. Jeremiah married way too
late to have been Benedict's father. Jeremiah married a Vaughn in Charlotte
Co and is on record there.
There were alot of Childresses buying and selling land, according to the
copies of original deeds I have on hand and also in Lunenburg Co before the
ARW. Where these Childresses went and who they were sons of I don't know.
I've always felt there was some link with the Richard Childress buying and
selling land in Charlotte before the ARW. I found a Richard Childress
marriage, 1785 to a JANE Weaver, but haven't found anything on the Weavers in
that part of VA. It's very possible that these two were the parents of
Benedict Childress also shown in legal documents as "Richard" Childress.
Do any of you have anything on JANE Weaver? Only Jane I've found who married
a Childress.. Thanks for the opportunity to share some info on my branch and
Dorothy Harkins. This has been a long project and complicated, but the mere
fact that so many mistakes exist on this branch hinders our efforts to
correct all the wrong info. Thanks again Kay for helping out!

Hi List,
As per a request from Dhark62488(a)aol.com, to correct
information, from a cited source, which I posted last
month
concerning her family of Childresses. The correct
information is: Mary E.Childress who married S.E.
White died 5 Jan, 1992 and not in Nov. as has been
reported other places. Ancestry.com and others have it
incorrect. Also there was no Nancy Hanks in this
family. William Marion Childress , Sr. married Nancy
Jane Wilkerson and both of them are buried in the
Childress Cemetery near Princeton, Ky.
So if everyone who is interested or related to this
family and those who are not sure about being related to
this family, but have the incorrect information, please
correct your data.
Thanks to everyone who will take the time to correct
this error of information and perhaps this will go a
long way with getting the correct information out there
in genealogy land.
