Childrey Of Frethornes & Fettiplaces
Hackpen Hill in Childrey is supposed to be Saxon haecce-penn meaning
Railing-Pen. This may relate to a rectilinear earthwork enclosure
(120ft by 60ft) which has almost disappeared from the north-west corner
of the copse at the head of the Devils Punchbowl. At first glance,
however, the pen would appear to be the Celtic for hill.
Childrey Church has an unusual lead font, dating from the reign of Henry
II, which displays little standing Bishops around its middle. The north
transept was St. Marys Chantry Chapel founded by Edmund De Childrey,
Lord of Frethorne Manor (north of the church), in 1368. The effigial
knight here is locally thought to be his, but is more early 14th century
in style and probably represents his predecessor Geoffrey De Frethorne
(d.1320). The church also features some fine memorial brasses to the
Lords of Rampayne Manor and, until destroyed in the 18th century, had a
wonderful painted board showing the descent of the Fettiplace family. It
may have been similar to that still to be seen at Liddiard Tregoze
(Wilts).
Rampaynes is the principle Manor House of Childrey and was named after
the family who lived there in the 13th and 14th centuries. By the end of
the following century, however, it was in the hands of Thomas Walrond
and his wife Alice whose brass can be seen in the parish church. Their
sole heir was their widowed grandaughter, Elizabeth Kentwood. Being both
heiress to her own father, Thomas Waring as well as her maternal
grandparents, this lady was a great prize, won by one of the prolific
Fettiplace family of North Denchworth and East Shefford. Elizabeth and
her new husband, William, are also remembered in Childrey Church by
another, now unusual though once popular, type of brass showing them
both rising from the grave! There is also the largest brass in the
county (15th century), to William Finderne and his wife, withunuaual
lead inlay. The manor house still incorporates part of the Fettiplaces
building. It was a fine Hall-House which stood well into the last
century. However, after the Fettiplaces left in favour of Swinbrook
(Oxon) in the 17th century, it became very run down. By 1824 it was
dismantled and almost ruinous. What was left has since been restored and
incorporated into the present manor house. It still retains the original
porch and screens at the west end of what was once the great hall. Parts
of the kitchen also survive. Childrey was the village where the Earl of
Forth (Lord General of the Kings Army) lodged with his men during the
Civil War (April 1644). It was probably one of his soldiers who hid a
large hoard of Stuart coins in the village. Also at this time, Charles I
is said to have spent a night, at the manor, as the guest of Lady Anne
Fettiplace.

The affidavits of Thomas Childrey and Nancy Childrey of Halifax Co, Va
taken at Clover Depot in said county on 14 June 1872 before Wm. M. Smith
a JP of said county to be filed and read as evidence in connection with
the claim for pension of Hubbard Rickman (No. 12672):
Thomas Childrey saith that he is in his 75th year and was born and
raised in Halifax Co, VA about 3 miles from the said Hubbard Rickman and
has known and was well acquainted with sd. Rickman all his life that he
has a clear and distinct recollection of the War of 1812 - that he knows
the fact that said Hubbard Rickman was drafted or enlisted in the
Militia Co. of Capt. Sims of Halifax Co. and left with the said company
for Norfolk, how long the said Rickman remained in service this affiant
can't say but thinks it was about three months. This affiant says that
he remembers distinctly when Capt. Sims Company left the county, as it
marched down the road near his father's knows that Hubbard Rickman was a
member of the company and thinks that Liet. Williams was in command of
the company when it left Halifax Co. He does not recollect exactly the
time when Capt. Sims Co. left the county, but thinks it was in the
spring of 1812, he cannot however give the date as it has been so many
years ago and he never expected to be called on as a witness. This
affiant further states that he has no personal interest in this matter,
that the said Hubbard Rickman resides in the same neighborhood with
himself and that they have known each other all their lives and further
the affiant says nil. Thomas (X his mark) Childrey.Witness B. F.
Garrett, Geo. R. Watkins.
Mrs. Nancy Childrey (another witness) saith I am now in the 72nd year of
my age and am the youngest sister of the said Hubbard Rickman and the
wife of Thomas Childrey, but I have no interest in the claim for pension
of my brother H. Rickman. I was born and raised in Halifax Co, VA and
have a clear recollection of the War of 1812. I remember distinctly the
time when Capt. Sims Militia Co. passed down the main road near my
father's house and know the fact that my brother Hubbard Rickman was a
member of the company and left the county with the company for Norfolk.
How long he remained in service I don't recollect but think I can say
with safety that he was absent from home some three or four months. I
also remember how distressed my father and mother were at my brother's
being drafted in the Army - particularly to go to Norfolk as that place
was considered very sickly at that season of the year. I was old enough
to remember distinctly the day the company left the county and know the
fact that my brother Hubbard Rickman did leave as a member of Capt. Sims
Co. and further this affiant says nil.
Nancy (X her mark) Childrey.Witness: B. F. Garrett, Geo. R. Watkins.
Certified Wm. M. Smith, JP 14 Jun 1872 and James D. Clay 17 Jun 1872.
The depositions of Thomas Childrey and others taken before me Wm. M.
Smith a JP for Halifax Co, VA at the house of Hubbard Rickman in said
Halifax Co, on the 18 July 1872 to be filed and read as evidence in a
claim for pension of the said Hubbard Rickman. Thomas Childrey being
sworn saith as follows:
1st question - What is your age and where do you reside?
Ans - I am in my 75th year and was born and raised in Halifax Co, VA
where I now live.
2nd ques-Do you know Hubbard Rickman
Ans-I have known him all my life. I was born and raised in a few miles
of his house and we now live in the same neighborhood.
3 ques - Do you remember the War of 1812?
Ans - I do recollect the War of 1812 clearly and distinctly.
4th ques -State, if you can, of your own personal knowledge whether the
said Hubbard Rickman served in the War of 1812 - in what company and how
long he served
Ans - I know the said Hubbard Rickman enlisted or was drafted in the
company of Capt. Matthew Sims of Halifax Co. and left the county as a
private in said company and I know the fact that said Hubbard Rickman
did serve for several months in said company. I do not recollect the
exact time he enlisted and went off in Capt. Sims Company, but to the
best of my recollection, it was in the spring (about May) in the year
1814. I am positive that he did serve as a private at or near Norfolk
for several months. During the war I lived in 2 miles of H. Rickman's
fathers and had a brother in the army at Norfolk and my brother and
Hubbard Rickman were constantly writing and sending messages home to
their families. And I can safely say that from my own personal knowledge
the said Hubbard Rickman did serve in the company of Capt. M. Sims of
Halifax Co. for a period of more than three months.
5th quest - Have you any interest direct or indirect in the prosecution
of this claim
Ans - None whatever
6 ques - Do you know of any surviving soldier of the War of 1812 who was
a member of Capt. Matthew Sims Co. except the claimant Hubbard Rickman
Ans - I do not. And further this deponent saith not.
Thomas (X his mark) Childrey
Mrs. Nancy Rickman (another witness) being duly sworn saith as follows:
1st quest - What is your age and where do you reside?
Ans - I am in my 74th year and reside in Halifax Co, VA
2nd ques - Do you know Hubbard Rickman (and if so) state if you know
from your own personal knowledge whether he served in Capt. Matthew Sims
Co. of Halifax Co. in the War of 1812 and how long he served?
Ans - According to my best recollection Capt. M. Sims Company left
Halifax Co. in the spring of 1814 and I know that Hubbard Rickman went
as a private in said company and served in said company for several
months. The said Hubbard Rickman is my own brother and was stationed at
or near Norfolk and was constantly writing home to my father and the
family and I can say from my personal knowledge that he did serve for
more than three months in the company of Capt. Matthew Sims of Halifax
Co. I was old enough to remember the War of 1812 and know that I can't
be mistaken in the above statement. I have no interest whatever either
direct or indirect in the prosecution of this claim and I don't know of
any soldier now living who was a member of Capt. Matthew Sims Co. And
further this deponent saith not.

VA PATENT LAND BOOK 17 PAGE 4

At the Amelia County court of 19 April 1745, Robert Vaughan was
appointed the surveyor of Fork Road from Irbys Courthouse Road into
Bush River Road. The road was to be cleared by John Ellis, William
Mayes, Lewis Vaughan, the widow Childrey, Matthew Mayes, John Childrey
and their tithes. Roberts efforts must not have satisfied his neighbors
because a grand jury indicted him for not keeping the road in repair. He
was acquitted on 20 December 1745 after they heard his excuse.
In 1755 Lewis Vaughan obtained a patent for 244 acres in Amelia County
on the head branches of Tomahawk and Franks Creeks. The land was next to
Robert Vaughan, Isham Vaughan, and others. On 26 January 1758, Lewis and
his wife sold William Foster 44 acres in Amelia County for 20
shillings. Lewis was still in Amelia County twelve years later. On 30
January 1760, he bought from Thomas Childrey a 150-acre portion of the
400-acre William Mayes patent of 1735. Childrey had inherited the
tract from his grandfather Mayes. The land was on the east side of Flat
Creek and Lewis paid £40. William Cross Craddock [206] witnessed the
deed. Thirteen years later, on 22 August 1774, Lewis put up his home
plantation of 220 acres to secure a loan of £77:1:1 from John Tabb.

In the June 1745 Amelia County court, they awarded Isham a judgement
against Osborne Keeling for £0:42:6 and court costs. On 19 October 1750,
Isham Vaughan and Thomas Spencer put up a 50-pound orphan bond. Thomas
Childrey, an orphan son of John Childrey, chose Isham to be his
guardian.

CHILDERS
The origin of the name is undoubtedly English, for it has not been found
in early records of either Ireland or Scotland. In 1601, the name
"Childers" appears in the records of Padiham Parish, Lancashire; and as
"Chylders" in the records of St Michael le Belfry Parish in Yorkshire.
In early Henrico County records it is spelled Childers, Childres,
Childress, Childrey, and even Childrs.

he is the grandfather of Benedict Childress. Benedict is the father of

Hi Cindy,
This is reference to your question to Kay about the Charlotte Co VA Childress
family. I also see your a descendant of Jeremiah Childress Sr thru Lucy, his
daughter. I also descend from Jeremiah Childress Sr thru his grandson,
Benedict Childress. I'm looking for Benedict's father, I have good leads,
but nothing solid. Benedict died 1794 and left a wife name Jane and 5
children, one of those named William Childress who married Nancy Wilkinson
were my ancestors.
I've posted some messages here about the Childress family in that part of VA,
check the Childress Research-List archives. Would love to know more Lucy.

Virginians - The Family History of John W. Pritchett
The 10 December 1737 court proposed the county levies. Living in the
county then were 759 tithables. At 18 pounds of tobacco per tithable,
the county would collect 13,362 pounds. The court detailed the expenses
for the period. The first recipient on the list was William Craddock, to
whom they paid 535 pounds. We do not know why they paid him. The court
compensated seventeen individuals 4,410 pounds for wolf bounties. Men
delivering wolf heads to the court included Edward Booker, JOHN
CHILDREY, William Mayes, Christopher Robertson [400], William Crawley,
and Joseph Echols.
