ALMOST A TRAGEDY--On Friday evening of last week, near Spring
Creek in this county,Preston CHILDRESS was accidently shot
through the right hand by Vivian HILLIARD,the wound inflicted
necessitating the amputation of the hand near the elbow. At
the time,HILLIARD was standing some six feet from
CHILDRESS, carelessly handling a Shot gun loades with turkey
shot, when one barrel was accidently discharged, the shot
crushing through CHILDRESS hand and instantly killing a
dog standing some ten feet from him. Both parties are
mere boys, hardly in their teens, and this is another sad
lesson of the peril of deadly weapons in youthful and
inexperienced hands.Young CHILDRESS,we learn,is the main
support and hope of a widowed mother.

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, TN - BIOGRAPHIES - Goodspeed's Biographies
Goodspeed's Biographies of Lauderdale Co., TN
Stephen H. Bibb, a prominent farmer residing in the northern
part of Lauderdale County, was born in Rockingham County,
N.C., July 30, 1833, and was the tenth child of eleven
children, nine of whom lived to be grown, born to Richard C.
and Margary (Hooper) Bibb. Both parents were born in North
Carolina, and came to Tipton County, Tenn., in 1840. The
father was a carpenter, but gave his time to farming; he died
on Knob Creek in Lauderdale county, in 1861, and the mother
died at the home stead on Knob Creek, in 1862. Our subject was
raised and educated on a farm, and has made farming his
business. In 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate Army, with
Gen. Chalmer's brigade of cavalry, but after serving eighteen
months was discharged on account of ill-health. Jan 31, 1856,
he was married in this county to Miss Martha E. Forbest, and
to this union were born Mary A., September 7, 1857; William
R., born May 12, 1861, and Stephen R., born October 15, 1862.
The latter married Miss Martha C. Childress, daughter of J. F.
Childress, and to them were born four children at two births.
Mrs. Bibb was born near Bloomfield, Ill., and died December
26, 1865, and our subject was married the second time in
Lauderdale County, February 10, 1867, to Mrs. Nancy W. Edney.
She had one son by her former marriage -- John G. Edney, born
June 8, 1862.Mrs. Bibb was a native of this county, born June
16, 1842, a daughter of
Squire Thomas J. Childress, a very prominent farmer of his
locality. Our subject is a Democrat, casting his first
presidential vote for James Buchanan; he is a Mason, and with
his wife belongs to the Methodist Church South. Mr. Bibb has a
good farm ten miles north of Ripley. He is a quiet,
industrious farmer, holding the respect of the community in
which he lives.

Diptheria is somewhat on the increase in Kingston and the
vicinity. The families of Messrs. W.G. Barnwell, J.B.

the disease last week, and we know of several other families
who have little ones very low from the same cause. ---Roane

The will of Nicholas Perkins Sr. (as he was called) was
found at the Henrico Court House, Richmond, Virginia, dated
1711, in Deed Book I. (L). In some genealogical notes I find
that the original will is now in possession of Dr. Wyatt
Letcher of Danville, Ky., who is a nephew of Robert Perkins
Letcher, Governor of Kentucky from 1840-44 and a descendant of
Nicholas Perkins.
The will is as follows: (1) Richmond, Va.
In the name of God, Amen, I Nicholas N. Perkins,
being sick and weak of body, but sound in mind, perfect sense
and understanding, thanks be unto Almighty God for the same.
Therefore have thought it fit and proper to make, ordain and
constitute this last will and Testament in manner and form as
follows:
First, I give and bequeath my Soul unto the merciful
hands of Almighty God, who gav it, and my body to the earth,
to be decently buried according to directions of my Executor,
hereinafter named, and as for worldly goods, as it hath
pleased AlmightyGod to bestow upon me, I have thought fit to
bestow as follows:
I give and bequeath unto my son, Phil Perkins, all
of my land between Spring branch and Abram Childers, to him
and his heirs forever and my will is that he is to pay unto
my granddaughter, Eliza Perkins, daughter of my son, Nicholas
Perkins, deceased, fifteen pounds of current money, being in
consideration of part of land designated for her father,
whereon he once dwelt before his death.
I give and bequeath to my son, Richard Perkins, the
plantation whereon I now live, to him and his heirs forever,
also one feather bed and furniture, two breeding sows, one
iron pot, one gun, one chest and two pewter dippers.
I give to my son, Abram Perkins that plantation I
bought of John Pledgo, by estimation one hundred acres; also
that piece of land I have lying between first plantation I
bought of said Pledgo and Spring branch, by estimation fifty
acres; one feather bed and furniture, two breeding sows, one
iron pot, one chest and two pewter dippers.
I give unto my daughter, Sarah Perkins, one feather
bed and furniture; also two pewter dippers.
I give unto my daughter, Elizabeth Perkins, one
feather bed and furniture and two pewter dippers.
I give unto my daughter, Mary Seal, wife of Amos
Seal, two ewes, one brass kettle and two pewter dippers.
I give and will my son, Constantine, five pounds
current money of Virginia.
My will and pleasure is that all of my cattle be
equally divided between my wife and my sons, Richard and
Abram, and my daughter, Elizabeth.
My will is that each of my children shall have their
share when they arrive at legal age, or on day of marriage.
All of the remainder of my estate I will to my
beloved wife, whom I make, ordain, constitute and appoint my
whole and sole Executor, of this my last will and testament,
hereby revoking all others.
In witness whereof I have given my hand and affixed
my Seal, this June 13th day,1711. Nicholas N. Perkins. (Seal
of red wax)

It was thought by some that only those who were
entitled to the use of arms, or court armor, used red wax as
seals, those not entitled to arms used black wax. This old
record states that he used red wax. Evidently there was some
importance attached to the red and black wax. The name
Childers was probably Childress. Nicholas Perkins married
Sarah Childress, daughter of Philemon Childress Sr. Planter of
Henrico.
NICHOLAS PERKINS (Nicholas)
Nicholas Perkins Sr., born about 1640, died 1711,
married Sarah Childress, daughter of Philemon Childress of
Henrico, and sister to Abram Childress.

Robert A. Childress, a prosperous farmer of Independence
County, was born in Franklin County, Va., in 1813. He is a son
of John W. and Sarah (Ferguson) Childress, both native of
Virginia. The Childress family has lived in the State of
Virginia for several generations. The grandparents, Robert and
Rachel Childress, both lived and died in that State. John W.
remained in his birth place until the year 1817, when he moved
to Ms, and in 1819 again changed his location, settling in
Randolph Co, Ark. In 1829 he came to Independence County, and
was one of the earliest settlers of that section, where he
made his residence until old age began to creep upon his
shoulders, when he went to live with a son in Galveston, Tex.,
where he died. His wife resided in Independence [p.651] County
up to the time of her death, in 1840. Robert A. was the oldest
child of this couple, and in his youth received a somewhat
limited education in Independence County, on account of the
very meager facilities for learning offered in that State. But
after reaching his majority he returned to Virginia, where the
educational advantages were greater, and attended some of the
higher schools of that State until he had procured a
satisfactory education. In 1841 he was married to Miss Martha
A. Waugh, who was born in Virginia in 1823, and died in 1860.
This marriage gave them nine children, of whom four are yet
living: Thomas B., Julia C. (wife of Joseph B. Pritchett),
Lewis W. and John W. In 1862 Mr. Childress married again, his
second wife being Mrs. Josephine Sullivan, an amiable and
pleasant widow lady, raised in Ms, and a daughter of Dr.
Samuel Halliburton, who has also passed away. This union gave
them four children, of whom two lived to maturity, and those
yet living are Samuel K. and Sarah J., wife of J. E. Moore.
His third wife was Mrs. Lucilla J. Cross, a widow, youngest
daughter of Col. John Miller, an influential and prominent
citizen of Independence Co. Mr. Childress has resided at his
present home since 1840, excepting five years spent at
Batesville, where he was engaged in business. He owns 642 acres
of land, and has about 325 acres under cultivation, all of it
comprising some of the richest land in the State. He has held
the office of justice of the peace for a number of years, and
has proven himself to be an efficient officer, and a valuable
man for the position. He is held in high esteem by the entire
community, and enjoys that distinction which an old settler is
entitled to. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity until
the war, but since then has not been identified with any
secret society. He has been a member of the Presbyterian
Church since 1833, and an elder for over forty years. His wife
is a member of the Bapt Church, and the children, excepting
two, belong to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In politics
Mr. Childress is a stanch Democrat.
LAWRENCE COUNTYPETTIOD OF SETTLEMENT
J. E. Moore married, in 1887, to Miss Josephine Childress, a
daughter of Col. R. A. Childress, one of the old settlers of
Independence County, and a hearty old gentleman, in his
seventy-eighth year. Mr. Moore is a member of the Baptist
Church, and his wife of the Presbyterian. He is an active
politician.

Joel Renfro Childress was a skilled carpenter for the
Chesapeake and Ohio railroad line. He worked on the Coal River
railroad line building trestles, bridges, and lining
tunnels.Childress relatives remember him as a man who loved
children. When he came home to Alum Creek from
working on the railroad, he would have his pockets full of
pennies for the children who all ran to meet him.In those days
you could buy a nice piece of candy for a penny.Joel's father,
Henry Childress, died in 1859 when Joel was only five years
old. His mother was left withseven young children to raise. In
1863 she remarried.Joel married Maria Tyler in 1877 and they
had seven children of their own. In 1902 Maria died when her
youngest child, Hazel, was only about three years old. Joel
never remarried. He retired from the Chesapeake and Ohio and
died in 1937. He and Maria are buriedtogether at the
