GOODSPEED'S BIOGRAPHICAL AND HISTORICAL MEMOIRS OF
NORTHEASTERN ARKANSAS Lawrence County Arkansas
John N. Campbell, treasurer of Lawrence County, Ark., is a
native of Cumberland County, N. C., where he was born April 3,
1820. His father was Murdock Campbell, of Scotland, born of
Scotch and Irish
parentage, who was raised and married in North Carolina. After
his marriage the eider Campbell moved to Lawrence County,
Tenn Mr. Campbell was married, in 1846, to Miss Mary J.
Childers, of Virginia.
Burrel M. Childers, a well-known and popular farmer and stock
raiser, was born in Madison County, Ala.,October 9, 1821. His
father, John Childers, was a native of Georgia, who moved to
the State of Alabama
when a young man, and was there married to Miss Rutha Cown.
The parents remained in Alabama until theyear 1824, and then
settled in Tennessee, where they resided up to 1838, when they
selected Ark as
their future home, and located in Lawrence County. The elder
Childers had an eventful history in his younger days, and was
a soldier in the Black Hawk War. He reared a family of eleven
children, five sons and six daughters, of whom Burrel M.
Childers is the only survivor. Burrel
remained with his father until he was of mature age, and then
enlisted in the Mexican War of 1846. After the war was over
and the treaty had been made, he received his discharge, and
returned to Lawrence County. He settled on his present place
in 1849, when this portion of Arkansas was nothing more than a
wilderness, and has lived to see it grow up [p.780] into a
populous and thriving community. Mr. Childers has since then
cleared up about seventy-five acres, and put them under
cultivation, besides owning 160 acres adjoining. He did, at
one time, own over 1,000 acres, but has divided up with his
children. When war was announced between the North ad South he
gave his services to the Confederacy, and joined Col. Shaver's
regiment. He was elected lt, and held that rank until the
close of hostilities. During that time he took part in the
fights at Pilot Knob, Independence, Kansas City, Big Blue and
Miner's Creek, where Gen. Marmaduke was taken prisoner. After
the war he returned to Lawrence County, and has since then
been occupied in
farming. His first marriage was to Miss Narcissa Beavers, of
Illinois, who died in 1856. This wife left two children, who
grew to maturity, were married, and left children of their
own. Mr. Childers next married, in
this county, Mrs. Hopkins, a widow lady, of Indiana, who died
in 1883. There are three children living by this wife, whose
names are: C. F., wife of Joseph Lollar; Julis, widow of A. B.
Hogard, and Hezekiah. His present
wife was united to him in 1884, her former name being Aveline
Grider, a daughter of Martin Grider, one of the pioneers of
Randolph County. There are three children by this marriage:
Maxie, Stonewall Jackson and Chaldon. Mr. Childers is a member
of the Masonic order, and is a Royal Arch Mason, belonging to
the Eastern Star. He attends the Christian Church, while his
wife is a member of the Methodist Episcopal
Church, and also of the Eastern Star. In the early days of his
settlement in Arkansas, Mr. Childers was a hunter of no mean
pretenses. He made a regular business of hunting for ten
years, and together with his brother, killed thirty-six bears,
six panthers and a great number of wild cats, in one spring,
besides a quantity of deer. He has a record of killing eleven
deer in one day, while a companion of his, a Frenchman, killed
eleven deer and two bears the same day. Mr. Childers is a
genial and active gentleman, though well advanced in life, and
is very much thought of by his neighbors. He is full of
anecdote, and it is a pleasure to listen to the reminiscences
of his early days, which none can tell so well as an old
settler.
William Childers, a well-known boniface and liveryman of
Imboden, was born in this county in the year 1844. His parents
came to Arkansas in childhood, and were located in the
southwestern part of Lawrence Co. He is descended from an old
family of Virginians; his grandfather, Isam Childers, moving
from that State to Arkansas, with his family, in 1824, where
he reared his family of four boys and two girls, Alexander C.
Childers, his third son, being the father of William Childers.
IsamChilders was a veteran of the War of 1812, and died in
1858 at an advanced age. Alexander C. Childers was born in
Virginia, in 1815, and moved to the State of Arkansas, with
his father, when in his childhood. When war was declared
between this country and Mexico, he was one of the first to
follow the lead of Gens. Scott and Taylor in the land of
cactus, and distinguished himself on many a battlefield. He
died in 1860 while in the very prime of life, and left a
shining example behind him for his sons to follow. James
Childers, one of his brothers, represented this county in the
legislature for several terms, and was one of the prominent
men of Arkansas. The mother of Mr. William Childors was a
daughter of Jacob Fortenberry; her name was Matilda, she was
born in Virginia in 1819, and died in 1844. She left four
children: Elisabeth, the wife of D.
Christian; Nancy, the wife of Lee Holt, now residing in Texas;
Absalom F., a Baptist minister in Alabama, and William
Childers, of Lawrence County. Mr. Childers commenced to make a
career of his own at the age of sixteen years, and entered the
army during the war. He was a member of Company E, First
Arkansas, and gallantly upheld the reputation of his
forefathers as model soldiers. On August 10, 1861, he was
dangerously wounded and forced to desist from fighting. He lay
idle for three months, but the old fighting instinct compelled
him to enter the ranks again, and he joined McCorvess'
regiment, Fourteenth Arkansas, in which he fought until his
capture at Port Gibson. He regained his liberty three months
later, and after the fall of Vicksburg [p.781] re-joined the
army at Washington, Ark. He was again made prisoner and taken
to Little Rock, Ark., and transferred from there to Rock
Island, Ill., where he was kept until Lee's surrender. After
his release he went to Leavenworth, Kas., and made a trip
across, the plains to Denver City, Col., remaining in that
place six months before his return home. He has, since that
time, resided in Lawrence County, where he is engaged in
farming, stock raising, and as a hotel keeper and liveryman he
enjoys a well-deserved reputation. He is one of the most
extensive stock dealers in the county, an occupation to which
he has given much attention since the war, and his was the
first shipment made over the St. Louis, Iron Mountain &
Southern Railroad. He has devoted himself largely to trading
in horses, mules, cattle, hogs and sheep. Mr. Childers is
prominent in all political matters, and was twice elected
treasurer of Lawrence County by the Democrats. He was also
nominated for sheriff, but was beaten by his opponent. His
first business venture in this county was with W. Childers &
Co., at Smithville, Ark., and the second with a firm composed
of W. C. Sloan, Q. C. Jones and himself, dealers in
merchandise, of which Mr. Childers was the manager. He sold
his interest to W. C. Sloan two years later, has had charge of
the widely known Delmonico Hotel and a Well- equipped livery
stable attached. He was married, January 15, 1865, to Miss
Clara A. Wells, a lady of Lawrence County, Ark., and daughter
of John Wells, of Virginia, who was one of the principal stock
dealers in Arkansas, before his death in 1858. Mrs. Childers'
mother was Eliza A. Grayson, of Louisiana, before her
marriage. She died in Imboden in the year 1886, aged sixty
years. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Wells, all of
them
deceased excepting the wife of William Childers. Mr. Childers
and his
wife have had eight children, three of whom are dead, namely:
Robert E. L., Nancy S. and Doney Belle. Those living are:
Charles O., Mollie May, William Sloan, John Crockett and
Grover Cleveland. Mrs. Childers is a charming lady and
universally beloved for her kindness of heart and gentle
disposition. Her husband is a Master Mason and a leader in the
affairs of his county. They are generous and liberal in all
their undertakings, and respected by everyone.

Pioneer History by Richard C. Schmal Early Settlers of
Lowell, Indiana
(in the January 30, 1980, Lowell Tribune)
The first of the homesteaders in this part of Lake County was
Thomas Childers, who, with his wife Sarah and their family,
settled in School Grove early in October 1834. To be the first
arrival was harder as settlers always helped to build cabins
for their neighbors. The Childers cabin was about two miles
north of Schneider and, according to the Claims Register, was
on the Southeast Quarter of Section 17, near what is now 221st
Avenue. All of these brave people bore their hardships with
great cheerfulness, but the early years were hard times. The
winter of 1834 the Childers family was in School Grove. In the
Centennial Edition of History of Lake County 1934, the names
of Thomas and Sarah Childers were included as those present at
the home of William and Elizabeth Wells for the purpose of
organizing the Lowell Church of Christ. This meeting was
called in January 1842.
Rev. T.H. Balls history included a Civil War record and
under The Roll of Honor, The Indiana Volwas found the
following: John Childers, 73rd Regiment, Company A, Died at
Nashville, Tennessee December 3, 1862. We are assuming this
soldier was a relative of Thomas, but not his son.
Early South County Village
We find a record of two burials about a mile south of Lowell
near the creek. These were among the first dearhs of the early
pioneers. The daughter of pioneer Thomas Childers was buried
there in 1835. The
second burial at that place was of a child from the pioneer
Wells family, also 1835. Also located in the settlement(s), a
mile to two-and-one-half miles south of the then town of
Lowell, was a school used for one term: a very small hut of
poles and logs built by Thomas Childers. William Wells, Thomas
Wells, Thomas Childers and a Mr. Cross all had children
attending. In 1903, the Lowell National Bank was making plans
to purchase the property than called "the Carrie Sanger
Place." Carrie probably was C.C. Sanger's daughter Caroline,
named after her mother, who was the daughter of pioneers
Joseph and Sarah Childers.

aside land for a cemetery and for a church. This land was
mentioned in T.H. Ball's History of Lake County--1872, where
Mr. Ball listed burial grounds, as follows: "Sanders Burial
Ground: Probably not deeded to the public but protected." This
ground was deeded to the township in 1879.

"Goodspeed", part #2
http://www.tngenweb.org/rutherford/goodsp1.htm
Many of the old Revolutionary soldiers settled in Rutherford
Co after the admission of Tennessee into the UNION, on grants
from the State of North Carolina. Among them may be
mentioned the GILBRAITHs,GRANTs, HALLs, HILLs, MURFREEs,
HUBBARDs, JONESes, RUTLEDGEs and others. Many of them became
pensioners after the passage of the act of Congress, of 1832,
for their relief. In the Creek war of 1812-14, related
elsewhere, a large number of troops went from Rutherford
County, although it is believed no regularly organized company
was sent. Col.
HENDERSON, who is accredited to this county, was killed in a
skirmish near the city of New Orleans. In the second Seminole
war, which broke out in 1836, Rutherford Co furnished two
companies, Capt.YOAKUM's and Robert JETTON's. These men
enlisted under the call for 2,500 men to serve for six months.
These men were attached to the Second Reg, which was organized
at Fayetteville, about June 16, 1836, by electing William
TROUSDALE, colonel; J. C. GUILD, lieutenant-colonel; Joseph
MEADOWS, first major; William WASHINGTON, second major.
These two regiments were formed into a brigade, of which
Robert ARMSTRONG was elected brigadier-general. The troops
left Fayetteville, the place of rendezvous, on July 4, and
proceeded direct to Columbus, Ga. The history of this
expedition is given under the second Seminole war. In 1846, on
the outbreak of the Mexican war, great numbers offered their
services to the State and Government. Two political companies
from Rutherford tendered their services at once, the one
commanded by Capt. MITCHELL, called the Spring Blues, and the
other by Capt. CHILDRESS. The latter only was accepted. These
men were not accepted till the second call, and consequently
did not see very active service. The sentiment of Rutherford
was strongly oppose to secession or separation till the climax
of the political issues was reached, when the people slowly
yielded, and in time became earnest supporters of the
Confederate Government
The city of Murfreesboro was founded by an act of the General
Assembly passed October 17, 1811, although no lots were
purchased nor houses erected until in June, 1812. The town
was originally called Cannonsburg, in honor of Gov. CANNON,
but by an act of November 19, 1811, amendatory to the act of
October 17, 1811, the name was changed to "Murfreesboro." This
name was given in honor of Col. Hardy MURFREE, who was a
Revolutionary soldier and held lands in the vicinity under
military grant from North Carolina. His claim as well as many
others, were signed by Richard Dobbs SPAIGHT, Esq., our
governor, captain-general, and commander-in-chief;" such an
array
it would seem would make the title perfect. As is elsewhere
mentioned, Joel CHILDRESS were appointed commissioners
(aldermen) of Murfreesboro. Lawyers - Andrew CHILDRESS,
Another historic character of this period was Peter JENNINGS,
a free negro, who had served during the Revolutionary war,
and for such service was awarded a pension. At this period
Murfreesboro afforded two military companies, one of
seventy-five men, the Murfreesboro Volunteers, commanded by
Capt. G S CROCKETT; the other, the Murfreesboro Sentinels,
commanded by Capt. Russel DANCE, afterward by J. C. ABBOT, and
still later by Capt. John CHILDRESS. Business of 1870:

1845
and Sketch of my Life from
Infancy by
Samuel Hervey Laughlin
In April, 1845, Samuel Hervey Laughlin wrote, "Those were
pleasant days---their memory is full of sweet melancholy---and
I pen these events here, knowing that no eyes but those of my
children, grandchildren, or those who will hold my memory in
equal respect, will ever see what I now write. I wish my
father or grandfathers had written and left just such free,
unreserved, and full memoirs, however badly or hastily
written."
After practicing law for a time in the third circuit,
part of the time State Attorney, and after Judge Gibbs had
gone to Nashville to live after the war, he went to Nashville
to live and practice also. He assessed great consequence at
the Bar and because he affected professional learning, and had
no capacity for public speaking, having never delivered an
argument before a jury or court that deserved the name of a
speech, he
had acquired among the people, as all stammering and dumb
lawyers do, the name of a man of deep law, learning. The
dignity he assumed, and the wise, mysterious, knowing manners
he assumed-avoiding all social intercourse with the common
people-added to his reputation for knowledge. He went to
Nashville and assumed the same and still more dignified and
distant habits. He continued to make and save money. After a
year or two he married Matilda, a daughter of the late John
Childress, who had long been United States Marshall for the
district of West Tennessee-by which office and a previous
mercantile connection, he had realized a considerable estate.
After his election, he continued on the Bench, having become
Chief Justice under the system adopted under the old
constitution of 1796, until he went out of office under the
constitution of 1834, ratified in 1835, by vote of the people
in the spring, and under which the newly organized and
apportioned legislature met in October 1835, to adopt a
judicial system, and fill all the offices vacated by the new
constitution, of which the chief Justiceship was one. He had
taken sides against Judge White's nomination for the
Presidency in 1835, and was other wise unpopular and could not
be reelected. In 1836, he became a warm friend of Mr. Van
Buren in the presidential election-wrote many articles -some
signed Kinderhook-all rewritten by me, and published in the
Union. In this way, he scribbled and electioneered himself
into the nomination for an associate, Judgeship on the bench
of the Supreme Court, on an increase of the number of circuits
and Judges, by which he, and John McKinley, still a lightn
(sic) man and a Whig, came on the bench. He was nominated by
Mr. Van Buren, and since this elevation, has assumed great and
vast dignity. Although profoundly aristocratic in all his
habits and bearing-as all men raised to wealth and station, by
a concurrence of accidents and false pretensions ever have
been-and always will be-yet he still professed to belong to
the democratic party and was in favor of Van Buren's election
in 1840-and of Mr. Polk's in 1844. At one time, he and his kin
had all the federal offices in Tenn worth having. He was a
Circuit Judge, pay $4500.00 per annum. His
brother-in-law, Morgan W. Brown-a shallow pretender who was
starving at the Bar at Nashville for want of talents and want
of energy and want of character-the worst appointment Gen.
Jackson ever made or Mr. Grundy as Senator ever assented
to-was appointed District Judge in place of Judge John McNairy
at $2000.00 per annum. Sam Marshall since a defaulter who has
ruined his securities, Judge Catron, Morgan W. Brown, V. K.
Stevenson, nor none of his near kin being of them-who was
another brother-in-law-all those named having married
Childresses -was U.S. Marshall for the District, an office
worth five r six thousand dollars a year. Benjamin Litton,
another of the same, was by the family, procured to be
appointed clerk of the Chancery Court at Nashville and
Franklin, an office worth from two to three thousand dollars.
All these
men were unpopular-Marshall and Morgan Brown worthless and
mean -but pretension and intrigue carried every thing-as they
too often do.
When I went to reside at Murfreesboro, I found a very
different condition in the state of society from that which
exists there at present. It was just after the war. Gen.
Robert Purdy, who afterwards was Marshall of Middle Tennessee,
after the death of the late John Childress............
Mr. Joel Childress, a merchant, owned and lived in the
framed portion of the tavern house on the West side of the
square, now owned and kept by Capt. Geo. Allen Sublett. Mr. C.
was a highly respectable man, and was the father of Mrs. Sarah
Polk, the lady of James K. Polk, now President of the United
States. He had only three other children-a son named Anderson,
who died when quite a young man, as did his wife, of
consumption. His other son, Maj. John W. Childress, a married
man with a family now lives on the farm where his father died
about the year 18-- of fever. His other child-his oldest
except Anderson, is Mrs. Susan Rucker of Murfreesboro. Capt.
Childress' widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Childress, now lives in
Murfreesboro. She was a sister of Col. Whitsitt,
once of Sumner County, Tennessee, where Mr. C. married her.
Col. Whitsitt once lived at the old Marable place in
Rutherford, afterwards removed to, and died in south Alabama.

Col. George Campbell Childress, at the time of his marriage
with Rebecca Stuart Read Jennings, was a widower. He was a son
of Hon. John Childress, one of the judges of Tennessee, whose
family consisted of five sons and five daughters. Four of the
daughters were wives of judges, one being the wife of Judge
John Catron, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the
United States. Mrs. James K. Polk was a cousin of Col.
Childress. Col. Childress was a member of the Bar of
Tennessee, and especially noted in criminal cases. He was on
terms of intimate friendship with Andrew Jackson when
President of the United States, who at one time offered to
name him for Attorney General of the United States. The
mother of Col. Childress was a daughter of General James
Robertson, the founder of Nashville, Tennessee. Some of the
uncles and brothers of Col. Childress settled in Texas when it
was a
province of Mexico. It was their influence, together with a
large number of other friends, who went from Nashville to
Texas at that time, that led Col. Childress to cast in his lot
among them in that state. After Texas had achieved its
independence Col. Childress returned to Nashville, Tenn.,
where he married his second wife (Rebecca Stuart Read
Jennings) in 1842. About 1844 he went again to Texas, his
intention then was to remove his family there to reside
permanently, but soon after he was stricken with fever and
died very suddenly at Galveston. His death was a severe shock
to his wife; her decline was
quite rapid. Hoping that the milder climate of Tuscaloosa,
Alabama, would benefit her, she decided to go there. The
change brought no relief and she died there in the care of her
uncle, Dr. Samuel K. Jennings, at the house of her daughter,
Mrs. Marrast,

Hi List and Kay -
Reference the ESTES - CHILDRESS ancestry -
I've seen data from this line before in a printed history, thought I might
share this with those who descend from this branch. The Rachel whose shown
as "Eastbridge" was actually "ESTES". I believe when the original research
was done on this line, they couldn't read Rachel's surname. I belong to
"Estes Trails" and I am also an ESTES descendant. I've seen Rachel Estes
Childress's ancestry because she descends from my line of ESTES. If any of
you are interested in the ESTES family, just let me know and I'll direct you
to the Estes websites. The Rachel Estes lineage is proved and she did marry
Robert CHILDRESS. Whether or not their related to Sarah Childress Polk I
don't believe it's been proved.
Thanks Kay for the message, this is a interesting branch of Childress!

THE JACKSON FAMILY Francis Jackson, the First
In Will Book 2 (dated 1785-1795) page 128 in Prince Edward
County, Virginia, appears the will of Thomas Jackson, who died
in 1792. His wife was Mary Franklin Jackson (1745-1790). The
terms of this will are not explicit, though not copied here.
To this union ten children were born: Elizabeth, James, Agnes,
Mary, Thomas, William, Sally, Francis, Milly, and Tabatha. Of
the ten children listed above, Francis was the one who came to
Versailles, Tennessee. During his declining years, after his
wife died and their eleven children had all left home, he
wrote an account of his life which was found among his papers
after his death in 1845. An exact copy of this autobiography
follows:
"I am an old and have reason to believe my days to be nearly
numbered, therefore, for the purpose of informing my children
or anyone else who feels an interest in my life, I here give a
brief sketch of it, in the following manner, that is to say:
I, Francis Jackson, son of Thomas and Mary Jackson, was born
the 12th day of January in the year of our Lord, 1766. On the
5th day of October, 1789, I was married to Elizabeth Woosman
Childress who was born on the 7th day of April, 1766. Her
first son was born the 15th day of Dec 1789 and named Thomas
...................
"Myself and wife were both born in the State of Virginia on
Sailor's Creek near the line that divides the Counties of
Amelia and Prince Edward.......................Elizabeth W
Jackson departed this life on the ninth day of August 1831 and
her remains were interred in a grave dug for that purpose
about six and a half rods due west of the dwelling house of
him, the said Francis Jackson." When Francis Jackson d, 10
Feb, 1845, he was buried beside his wife.
.................Elisabeth Childress Jackson was a cousin of
Sarah Childress, who married James K Polk. President and Mrs
Polk were sometimes guests in The High House as they traveled
by horse-drawn carriage from the Polk home in Columbia to the
Childress home in Murfreesboro, using the Old Columbia Dirt Rd
which came through Versailles.
Francis II and Elizabeth Jackson became the parents of
thirteen children:
