<PRE>Hi Kay, Thanks for your note. I never saw your post on Caldwell County
Kentucky Childresses and I surely would love to. My great great grandfather
William MarionChildress Sr, was born in Charlotte County, Virginia Oct 14,
1785, son of Benedict Childress and Nancy Jane Burton. We do not know the
parents of Benedict, also maybe known as William. He was the grandson of
Jeremiah Childress and was named in Jeremiah's will. This is unusual because
no other grandchildren are named. He married Nancy Jane Wilkerson(1792-1864)
and both of them are buried in Caldwell County. Their son William Marion
Childress, Jr. b. 5 July,1827 also in Charlotte County and he is buried where
they are. He died 27 April when my grandfather J.E. Childress was only 3
months old, so my Papa Childress never knew his dad. But the wife lived
until 1919 and I am her namesake, she was Permelia Ann Hester, and my mom
named me Dorothy Hester White. So these are my Childresses that I have
researched and wish to continue to do so. I am very grateful for all your
reports and want to thank you for the good work you have done with the
Childress name. Sincerely, Dorothy Hester White Harkins

Cornelius Roberts was probably born sometime before 1746 in
what is now Henry County, Virginia. His father was most likely
James Roberts, although this has not been proven, and his
mothers name is unknown. Cornelius married Mary Benton about
1767. They lived in Henry County for a few years until about
1769-1770 when he obtained land as a Right of Settlement in
Grayson County, Virginia. During Lord Dunmores War against
the Shawnee Indians in 1774 Cornelius served in the militia
with the now legendary Daniel Boone, and then in 1780 he
fought against the British in the American Revolution in the
militia of the Elk Creek District. It was around 1783 that he
finally settled down for good in what is now Russell County,
Virginia. Cornelius and Mary had a total of 12 children, 6
boys and 6 girls. In June of 1788, while on an expedition to
the Black Mountain to collect the valuable herb, ginseng,
Cornelius and his party were attacked by a band of Cherokee
Indians led by the infamous Robert Benge. Cornelius was
scalped and killed in the attack. Cornelius twelth child was
born a few months later and was named Mourning in his memory.
25 years later Cornelius son, Daniel, and a party of men
hunted down and killed Dick Benge, the son of Robert Benge.
Cornelius and Mary left a legacy of 117 known grandchildren
and over 660 known great-grandchildren. Cornelius was 42
years old when he died.

He ran away twice, to join the army & his father brought
him home each time. There are supposed to be records in Old
War & Navy Dept; Wash. D.C.;Albemarle Co., & in Virginia State
Library that show he enlisted twice. In Oct 1780 he served for
2 month as a private in Capt. John Christian's Co., at age 16.
In summer of 1781 he was in Capt. John Lamphier's Co.,
Virginia service, he may have turned 17 by this time.On 13
Nov 1850 he applied for a pension which was not granted as he
had not served for 6 months. His brother Samuel, testified in
the claim.

Abraham CHILDERS, Sr. (c.1625 - bef. Nov. 1680)
The origin of the name is undoubtedly English, for it has not
been found
in early records of either Ireland or Scotland. In 1601, the
name
"Childers" appears in the records of Padiham Parish,
Lancashire; and as
"Chylders" in the records of St Michael le Belfry Parish in
Yorkshire.
In early Henrico County records it is spelled Childers,
Childres, Childress,Childrey, and even Childrs. He was living
in the Virginia Colony, in Henrico County, prior to 1656. On
28 February 1656/7 William Harris of Curles sold for "one
bill" to Abrah Childres "the parcel of land he now lives on".
No amount of acreage was mentioned but the land and his house
was located "by the (James) river on the lower side of
Morgan's Landing and was bounded by the river, Morgan's, a
meadow, a swamp, and Clarke's path". The name of his wife,
whom he probably married in England, has never been learned.

SOME DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM V. ADKINS
littlecalamity(a)yahoo.com
RICHARD PARKER lived on the James River at the head of Four
Mile Creek in Henrico Parish. Richard is believed to have
descended from the Parker family of Brownshome/shillingham,
Yorkshire, England.
Richard Parker's will mentions wife Mitha (or Witha) (on the
deeds giving property to his daughters, his wife signed
Elizabeth); daughter Ann, now wife of James Daniel; daughter
Elizabeth, now wife of William
Atkinson; daughter Mary now wife of Lewis Jinkins; and son
Richard the executor. Thomas Owen and Robert Woodson, Jr. were
witnesses. It was dated 27 Feb.1726 and recorded 6 March 1726.
Henry Pew, whose will was recorded in 3rd March 1711,
mentioned grandson Joseph Adkins and was witnessed by John
Adkins. I found in the Henrico Deed Books the Henry was 45 in
1679 and John was 17 in 1678. Henry
Pew also mentioned a grandson Abraham Childers, Jr. In 1686 an
Abe Childers (probably the senior Abraham) was 30 years of
age. Also along these lines, Richard Parker "for love and
affection" gave a cowcalf to John Cannon and Esther his wife
on April 1, 1689. This John Cannon was 43 in 1686 and his wife
Esther was 22.
