Greetings! First of all I am very new to all of this, and to each of you
receiving this, I already appreciate greatly just by reading your responses
on lists, message boards, etc.and your cheerful willingness to help others.
That must be such a testament to the kind of person you are in "real life"
and I hope to be blessed by making a connection to at least one of you! If
not, still know that your hard work and diligence is an inspiration and
enjoyment to one already feeling quite overwhelmed by this!
My name is Debbie Childress Croy. I was born in Amherst County, VA the
daughter of Irene Elizabeth Hudson Childress and John Henry Childress. He was
the son of John Wesley Childress and Willie Palmer Raikes Childress. My
Mother was born and raised at "Peddler Mills," (Mt. Pleasants/Agricola) and
my father was born on the "family homeplace" in Madison Heights, both in
Amherst Co. Although I want to pursue my Hudson heritage and would certainly
appreciate any input here, I am concentrating on the Childress~Raikes family
lines right now.
My Father's Grandfather was John Alexander Childress (I believe) and I do not
know anything for certain in addition to that. I speculate there are the
possibilities of a Hall or a Carter line, but have absolutely nothing to
offer in that regard. It is to my understanding that my ancestors had been on
this property for MANY years prior to the time my Father and his brothers
were born in the house, where I was also raised. The property has many
"family relations" properties nearby, such as the Raikes/Rakes, Camdens,
Mays, Halls, and others. There were other family members that left the
Amherst Co. area for Texas, and westward. Once again this being purely
speculative on my part perhaps into Charleston, West Virginia, Cincinnati,
Ohio, Iowa and California and other areas. I think this for a couple of "late
at night" trains of thought...as with many Childress lines I have skimmed
over, I feel they generally took up residency very near water, (as I myself
would do now and am sure most families back then tried to do) in addition
with quick looks at maps, certain areas seem to have certain name
connections; as Amherst is found in Ohio and Iowa and other states, but also
familiar to me~ family names seem to have settled and grown into towns or
counties in close proximity. I thought maybe these families of the past break
off with others from the area in bonds formed out of marriage connections,
friendships or occupations and build these new lives. I also suspect that is
why there are so many same (quite English!) given names, maybe it is in
respect to family members and an attempt to remain connected to the original
families that do have to ultimately connect at some point if we ever trace
them back to Adam and Eve!
I am so sorry I did not pay closer attention to my Father as he would mention
Uncle Robert, Jacob or Joel or Aunt Lizzie or Maggie or a cousin Charlie or
so and so Hall, Sandidge or...even little memories drift back from often
visiting where I got my first kitty when I was around five, and naming him
Peppermint Thomas Kitty CARTER Childress, because it was his FIRST families
name! Is this normal to experience, or is it simply sleep depravation from
going to too many websites late at night????
My family seemed to stay in the grocery/meat, and orchard businesses along
with Tours of Duty in the military, and building and renting houses. Are
there any avenues you suggest for these few clues???
I was an only child, never knowing my grandparents as they passed away before
I was born, or very young. My parents were older when they had me and I did
not really know other family members well because most had basically started
their own lives by the time I was born. Sadly the majority of my family
members have passed away and it has been twenty years since I married and
left the area.
There is a family cemetery on what use to be our property that I have not
been to since I was a little girl when my Father or Uncle would take care of
it. I am sure it is probably overgrown and unknown now. I have been unable
for a long time to return "home." This is another reason I am eager to learn
of my blood lines as I have a blood loss disorder and the "specialists" have
not been able to find the cause. Has anyone heard of any other "bad blood"
(not fights!) in the actual blood lines? See!...I am not just trying to seek
out the Blue Bloods among us!
I Thank you so much in advance for reading this apologetically LONG letter,
and hope I am not being too presumptuous in contacting you in this manner,
but as I said I am so impressed with each of your genealogy expertise! I am
seeking advice before I do anything as far as message boards or other
"trails" I should follow along this super information highway route!
I am listing my Father and Uncle's info and will add Surnames afterward of
which I feel fairly certain are family names to this "sap"ling, me!

I believe my Grandmother, Willie Palmer Raikes was one of seven sisters
because of a great Aunt Maggie(Camden) telling me that was why there was a
"Seven Sisters" rose bush planted by our front porch! My Grandmother died
when my Father was young, but that rosebush was still blooming when the house
was sold in 1985 due to my parents ill health. Wish I could go back to those
carefree days of the front porch swing and the smell of lilacs, pear and plum
trees!
Once again, I apologize for the ramblings of this lengthy message but felt it
somewhat necessary. I eagerly look forward to any responses and will
certainly share anything I could help anyone else with! I can be contacted at

The Wards
More of the Jesse Turner interview from Cary Ward (sisi5(a)juno.com)
of Cantonment, FL: The Ward Mill Creek located east of Crestview was named for two
brothers who started a gristmill there. One,a bachelor, moved in with the other
brother who was married. There is no sign of the old mill now. [Editor's note:
These were the sons of William Marion WARD, Alexander D. & Joseph E.] The origin
of "Ward Bay" has been lost in history. The following was stated by Jesse: Euchee
Valley (sp?) is located east of DeFuni Springs, Fla. Eucheeana (spelling ?), the
community, was the county seat of Walton County at one time. The old courthouse
was burned in the first part of 1880. Euchee Valley was an old Scottish
settlement. There is an old Cem there and likely has members of the Ward family
buried there. There were some Wards living at Bruce ? which is nearby. J.J. Ward
and his brothers living in that area were descended from our ancestors. Benjamin
and Elijah were brothers. They descended from Benjamin (I assume that Jesse meant
J. J. Ward and his brothers) and "we" descended from Elijah. Daniel was a brother
of Elijah and Benjamin. They came from North and South Carolina and moved into
the Bon Secour Bay country. Moses Ward was very dark, likely getting his
characteristics from his Indian ancestors. He was forced to move from Mississippi
because his skin was so dark, and believed to be of Negro blood. He was not
allowed to attend the white school. [Editor's note: Elijah W. WARD of Walton Co.,
FL was not a brother to Benjamin &Daniel and probably not even related. Most of
the WARDs living near Bruce, FL were descendants of James B. WARD of Dale Co., AL.
I am of the opinion that "MOSES WARD" was actually MOSES CHILDRESS and that there
has been confusion in this story as itas passed down.] No official written record
has ever been found to show a direct descendancy from Nahoga(Nancy) Knight. The
records only go back to her children according to Jesse. He does not have any idea
where she is buried. He is of the opinion that Nancy Knight came from South
Carolina. John Ward was driving a herd of cattle through South Carolina and was
headed southward. The cattle drivers camped one night near an Indian Settlement
and while there, John Ward met Nancy Knight. He fell in love with her and they
were married. They had several children born in South Carolina (One can only
wonder what happened to the cattle and the other drivers) [Editor's note: I still
have seen no evidence to support this cattle drive lore and my research disputes
the claim that Nahoga was married to the John WARD of Bon Secour. The only record
of John WARD's wife shows her name as Elizabeth KNIGHT (Spanish Catholic baptism
records of Mobile).] In the 1790s, John and Nancy moved into the Bon Secour Bay
area and other children were born to them there. In about 1803, due to the
pressure of British troops in the area (this was prior to the War of 1812) the
Wards began to spread out away from the coastal area. Elijah went north to
Jackson, AL and then on up to the Grove Hill, AL area. At Grove Hill, Elijah
worked for old man William Cochran (sp?), a Revolutionary War veteran. William
Cochran was a missionary for the Indians. He, William, also served on the
Orphan's Court at Grove Hill (whatever that was). William Cochran had a
daughter named Sarah, who Elijah fell in love with and married. A Notary Public by
the name of Taylor md them. The bride's father, William Cochran, gave her and
Elijah a herd of cattle as a weULing gift to get them started off well in their
marriage. William Cochran also had a son named Cheedle (sp?). [Editor's note: In
my research I have found nothing that I consider proof that John WARD of Bon
Secour was the father of Elijah W. WARD of Walton Co., FL. John WARD's son named
Elijah b. 1810; Elijah W. b. ca 1779. Jesse Turner stated that William Cochran
stated in his Will that he had already given his daughter, Sarah Ward, her share
of the cattle. Elijah and Sarah drove the herd of cattle cross-country into
Ward's Basin. [now Santa Rosa Co.] This basin is located east of the Blackwater
River as you cross the Interstate Highway I-10 bridge over the river Elijah and
Sarah Ward settled in Ward's Basin on the land

between Charleston and Savannah. He had a will in 1842 that clearly named each of

Childers Biographies
J. SAMUEL CHILDERS, wholesale and retail dealer in groceries, was born in
Pulaski, Tenn., April 28, 1846, son of J. B. and Susan (Ezell) Childers, and is
of Scotch-Irish and EnglisH descent. The parents were natives of Virginia and
Tennessee, respectively. The former was born August 29, 1815, and the latter was
born October 1825, and died in Giles County in 1865. The Childers family
immigrated to Tennessee in 1819, and settled in Giles County. They have for many
years been one of the leading families of this county. Our subject, one of the
prominent businessmen of this city, is the eldest of five living children. He was
educated at Giles College in Pulaski, and in 1864 enlisted in Company K, First
Tennessee Cavalry, and remained in the Confederate service until the close of the
war. In 1865 he engaged in the merchandise business in Pulaski, and in 1868 he
was joined In marriage to Miss Ada Pullen, of Giles County. This union was
blessed by the birth of one child, Ben. From 1869 to 1874 Mr. Childers was in the
dry goods business at Wales Station, this county, but in the latter year he
returned to Pulaski, where he continued the dry goods business for two years, and
then for four years was connected with a cotton factory. In 1874 he began the
grocery business in this city, and has since continued that occupation. Mr.
Childers is an enterprising man and a Democrat in politics. He is a Knight
Templar, Pulaski Commandery, No. 12, and he and wife are members of the Methodist
Episcopal Church South. (Goodspeed's History of Giles County, 1886)

Congaree River, at Orangeburg Courthouse, and at the "Four Holes Swamp" located
between Charleston and Savannah. He had a will in 1842 that clearly named each of
his children and identified his daughter Sarah as the wife of Littleton

followed by more of the Childers family and a lot of Sandlins.
