Nancy,
I am afraid that this is not a lot of help for you, but I have a George
Childress in my database who could possibly be one of your ancestors.
Unfortunately, I have not researched this line very far; and much of my
information is secondhand. Most of it comes from the work of my fourth
cousin Mary Barry Freeman (whom I never met). Mrs. Freeman died in 1963 and
left her genealogical papers to the TN State Library and Archives.
Elizabeth Binkley, sister of my second great-grandfather, was born about
1768, probably in Frederick Co., MD. She married Joseph Childress, b. abt.
1765, in Surry Co., NC, 10 August 1787. About 1799 Elizabeth and her
children moved to Robertson Co., TN; it is not entirely clear to me at this
point whether Joseph was still living at that time. Some people believe he
died about 1800.
There is some inconsistency in Mrs. Freeman's data. For instance, Mrs.
Freeman's papers contain a handwritten note saying that all the children of
Joseph and Elizabeth Childress were born before the family came to Tennessee.
However, this would contradict the statement that Mrs. Childress at least
came with her father Johannes (John) Binkley. He is known to have come to
Robertson County from North Carolina late in 1799 as this is documented in a
contemporary account published in the book Early Travels in the Tennessee
Country.
At any rate, according to Mrs. Freeman, Joseph and Elizabeth Childress had a
son, George, born 04 August 1800 in NC or TN. He married Rebecca James
Murdock 01 September 1831. Both George and Rebecca died before 1850 in
Kentucky. Mrs. Freeman wrote, "George and Rebecca died and Katherine Binkley
(aunt m. Henry Frey) took the children. They inherited a fortune and negro
slaves."
The only portion of this story for which I have original documentation is the
1850 census for Elizabeth's younger sister Catherine Binkley and her husband
Henry Frey, which does indeed show these children living in the Frey
household:
Robertson County, Tennessee, Census-1850
Name Age Sex Occupation Real Place of
estate birth
Henry Frey 72 M Farmer 2500 NC
Catherine 66 F NC
John N. 26 M TN
Willie F. 24 M TN
Catherine 21 F TN
Wm H. Childress 18 M Student TN
Martha A. 16 F TN
John B. 14 M TN
Lucy G. 11 F TN
John H. Shelton 5 M TN
There was also a tradition in this family of being related to Sarah Childress
Polk:
Excerpt from undated letter from Stella Pocahontas Anthony Thompson (Mrs. J.
Frank Thompson) to Mary Barry Freeman. (Mrs. Thompson's address shown as
1206 Rollins, Columbia, Missouri):
"The Childress' were related to Mrs. James K. Polk some way. My mother said
she remembered hearing Uncle George Farmer (Dr. John Childress Farmer, my
grandfathers father) telling about visiting the Polks in the White House.
Did you ever hear this tradition..."
However, George Farmer was John Childress Farmer's brother, not his father,
according to Mrs. Freeman's other notes. Stella P. Thompson was the
great-great granddaughter of Joseph Childress and Elizabeth Binkley.
Nancy, I have copied a tree for this family below. I know that this is not
much help but perhaps it is a clue. If you should discover that you are
indeed descended from George Childress and Rebecca Murdock, let me know.
Although I don't have anything on the ancestry of Joseph Childress, I have
considerable data on the Binkleys.

To Whom This May Concern:
I am looking for any information on my family. My great-grandfather was
George Childress, his wife was Theresa Roseanne or Roseanne Theresa Farrell.
They had two children, both of which are still living; one in Virginia or
West Virginia, and one in Texas.
George was born in, I believe, in Danville, Virginia in 1895. He died in
Florida in 1970. That is all the information I have on my great-grandfather.
My great-grandmother, I have no information on her other than that she was
from the Massachusetts area.
The marriage location is also unkown.
From what I do understand, (this has been passed down from my grandmother) we
are related to Sarah Childress who married James K. Polk, as well as George
Childress who wrote something for the state of Texas.
If you have any information, I would appreciate it if you would help me in my
continueing search for my family search. You can e-mail me at
Nag21599(a)aol.com.
Thank You so much,
Nancy Childress Granger

Hi list,
This was sent to me can anyone shed some light on
this line?
I am trying to find the parents of a William Childress
(possibly originally Childers) who was b abt 1750 or
before and m abt 1772 Ann Burton b 1749 who was a d/o
of William Burton and Marianne David (d/o Pierre and
Anne David of Manakintown). William Burton d abt 1750
when Ann was just a baby and Marianne David Burton
married Stephen Easley prob in 1751 an they were in
Halifax Co. VA. in 1770's and moved to Sullivan Co. TN
abt 1782. On May 20, 1773 Stephen Easley of Parish of
Antrim and Co. of Hallifax sold to William Childress (
I just looked at this deed and it could be read as
Childry but I think it is e and the long S preceeding
a regular s) 200 acres on the waters of Bannister
River. In 1770 Stephen and Marianne Easley had given
her da Ann Burton 200 acres in Cumberland Co. the part
that is now Powhatan. The Burton line was all around
the James River in several counties from mid 1600's.
I see where you have some knowledge of the Halifax Co.
VA Childreys and I am trying to see if there is a
connection here. There was a Benjamin Childrey who
had a land grant 10 Aug. 1759 Halifax Co. 330 acres on
a branch of Difficult Creek. Would you know the
names of parents, wife and any children of this
Benjamin Childrey of Halifax Co.?

above is the grandfather of the author. William Reade Rucker and his wife, Susan
Childress were married Nov. 10, 1819, at Murfreesboro,

GOOLSBY.
Thomas Goolsby was one of the earliest settlers within the present
bounds of the county. In 1732, thirteen years before its organization, he
patented twelve hundred acres on James River. In 1745 he sold more than five
hundred acres to Samuel Shelton, and in the description of the deed are mentioned
two tributaries of the James, called Holmans and Goolsby's Creeks. This deed is
noteworthy also from a memorandum inscribed on it in 1788, showing that it had
been previously recorded, but the record had been destroyed by the British in
1781. Thomas Goolsby died in 1774. He was twice married, his last wife being Lucy
Bryant. His children were William, Thomas, Susan, the wife of a Childress, Ann,
the wife of a Nowling, Lucy, the wife of a Saunders, and Elizabeth. William
owned land on the waters of the south fork of Hardware. He died in 1819, and his
children were William, Tabitha, the wife of Joseph Harlan, Tarleton, who married
Mildred, daughter of Thomas Walker Jr., Sarah, the wife of a Thurmond, Susan, the
wife of a Davis, Fleming, Jane, the wife of Samuel Harlan, Arthur, Mary, the wife
of a Samuel Richardson, and Nancy, the wife of a Phillips. Charles, James and John
Goolsby, of Albemarle, were Revolutionary soldiers, members of the Ninth Virginia
Regiment. Charles, who was a non-commissioned officer, and James were taken
prisoners at Germantown; all three died in the service. They were beyond doubt
sons of Thomas Sr., as William was stated to b their heir.

The population of Charlottesville was for the first time taken separately from
that
of the county in 1870.
Eleanor Crawley was sentenced to receive fifteen lashes on her bare back, well
laid on, for stealing linen of the value of eleven pence--a little over fifteen
cents and Pearce Reynolds to receive twenty-one, for stealing a handkerchief of
the same value. James, a negro of William Cabell, for stealing twelve pence, was
burnt in the hand, and given thirty-nine lashes at the whipping post. In a suit
James Fenly gained against Samuel Stephens, and Stephens choosing to be
whipped rather than be imprisoned, the Sheriff was ordered to administer
twenty-one lashes. The grand jury presented George McDaniel for profane
swearing--two oaths within two months--and Abraham Childress for failing to
clear the road of which he was surveyor. On motion of David Reese, the
testimony of John and Stephen Heard, and of Patrick Nowlin, was recorded,
certifying that a piece was bit out of Reese's left ear, in a fray with Nowlin.
The
testimony of Thomas Nunn and his wife Kate was recorded, showing that they
had been imported about fourteen years before, and had never received their
dues; and subsequently their two children, Mary and Lucretia, were directed to
be bound out by the Church wardens of St. Anne's parish.

Warren never made much progress.

As the term of L. S. Macon as Sheriff had ended, a new Sheriff, J. C. Childress
had already been appointed. By military authority, W. J. Points was made Clerk,
George F. Jones and Angus A. McDonald Commissioners of the Revenue, the former
fo Fredericksville parish, the latter for St. Anne's, William F. Worthington,
Commonwealth's Attorney, and the following persons magistrates, Henry N.
Harrison, William G. Merrick, John Thornley, Thomas Garland, John W. Porter,
William H. Hotopp, Edward S. Johnson, John W. Williams, Charles Goodyear and
harles A. Goodyear. About the same time Wells was removed as Governor, and
the entire power of directing affairs, nominal as well as real, rested in General
Stoneman.

Hi Cindy -
Hi List -
Reference the age of JOEL CHILDRESS and birthplace -
It was said that he was born in Virginia. He was born 1777 according to the
Surry County 1789 - Orphan Court records - His age placed him at 12 years old
in 1789.
The court records say that his father BENJAMIN CHILDRESS was deceased. So he
would have died most likely anytime after 1777 and by 1789 because of the
orphan court records in Surry Co, NC.
A Stephen Childress was involved with these court proceedings and so was
Abraham Childress. However, Joel was bound out to Abraham Childress in 1789
until he reached the age of 21. [Information from Lee Rau]
Another interesting point here - Benjamin Childress left Inventory in
Charlotte Co, VA 1789. Another Charlotte County VA record (posted here on
Childress-Research-L) said that SUSAN Childress was living in Charlotte Co,
VA during the ARW. She and her family received supplies as her husband
BENJAMIN CHILDRESS was in the Continental Army. Its very possible that these
two people could have been JOEL Childress's parents.
According to a *letter written (also posted here on Childress-Research-L)
before First Lady, Sarah CHILDRESS POLK died, she had written a letter and
had said that her only sister was named "SUSAN" for her father's (JOEL)
mother.
NOTE - *I will be glad to give the information again for those who might have
missed it. Also any other info mentioned in this message.
So, I would think from what Sarah CHILDRESS Polk had to say reference her
grandmother's name being SUSAN. And the information in Charlotte Co, VA ref
SUSAN wife of BENJAMIN CHILDRESS - These two people would have been
JOEL Childress's parents. It certainly seems logical to me. Does anyone else
have anything to add?
Thanks Cindy and please keep us posted!

Sir, I am descended from Reps Osborn Childress Sr and have found this
information in Abstracts of Vital Recs From Raleigh NC Newspapers 1799 -
1819; Lois Neal, Spartanburg SC 1979. I don't have my copy of the article or
book right now and do not remember the explanations of the abbreviations.
Items 871 and 873 refer to Reps Junior. Both died in Lincoln Co TN. Your
reference to 'slave holders' would have included the two Reps, as they did
hold many slaves in Lincoln Eo TN.
Item 871-CHILDERS; M. In Stokes county on the 21st ult., Mr. Osborn Childers,
of Rockingham county, to Miss POLLY HILL, sister of Mesrs. WILLIAM and GREEN

I have other information on Reps Sr and his descendants but nothing on his
ancestors. My mother said that it had been handed down that Sr's wife was
Betsy Hardin, but I have not been able to confirm this.
I read all of your and other e-mail concerning this line. Find it very
interesting and hope to find more on Reps. I do belong to the Childress
Family Assn. and plan to be in Augusta in October.

Fellow Listers:
In response to Lee Rau's posts on Joel Childress, I felt obligated, since I live in Raleigh, NC, to post the actual (not abstracted) court minutes regarding Joel Childress in 1789. In addition, I have been working for some time on trying to sort out the Surry/Stokes Co. Childresses (I have circumstantial evidence that my ancestors may be there amongst the William Childresses) and will provide some preliminary data. And of course, I will have to throw in some interpretation and speculation as well.
Data on Joel:
From the Surry County Court Term of May 1789.
Wednesday May 13, 1789.
"Ordered that Joel Childress Orphan of Benjamin Childress Decd be bound to Stephen Childress untill the third day of March 1798 at which time he arrives to 21 years of age to learn the Art & Mistry of a House Carpenter & Joiner the said Stephen agrees to give him L__10 worth of Tools & Clothes at his freedom & also learn him to read write & Cypher as fore as the rule of three Included."
Saturday May 16, 1789.
"Ordered by the Court that Joel Childress of Benjamin Childress Decd who was at this Term bound to Stephen Childress still remain in the possession of Abraham Childress untill the next Court and that the said Indentures be Cancelled. And that the said Orphan be brought to next Court for their futher direction."
From the Surry County Court Term of August 1789.
Wednesday August 12, 1789.
"Agreeable to an Order of the last Term to cancel certain Indentures then made & to bring said Orphan, Joel Childress, to this Term for futher Direction, according said Orphan was produced. Ordered that he be bound to Abraham Childress until he arrives to the age of 21 years, he being now 12 Years old the 22nd of last March. The said Abraham agrees to give said Orphan at his freedom, a Horse & Saddle worth L15 & to learn him to read, write & Cypher etc."

Comments:
The early tax records for Surry Co are mostly missing and what is there is fragmentary for lots of years. Unfortunately this doesn't improve until about 1815. No data for Surry Co after 1789 were included, but then almost all the Childresses, if not all, were in the Stokes part of Surry Co.
For those who don't have it the code for the 1784-1787 NC State Census is
1st column WM 21-60 yrs.
2nd column WM under 21 & above 60
3rd column WF all ages
4th column Blacks 12-50
5th column Blacks under 12 & over 50
Thanks to Lee I now have a lot more searching to do since in the quick pass through the court records looking for Joel I discovered exemptions from poll taxes (possible both Abrahams) and 2 deed transfers (this may have been the Childress way since the regular deed transfer process records show almost no deed transfers for the Childresses). Since there are some 21 volumes of handwritten records to wade through it will be some time before I can update the above data with what I can gleam from the court records. In this regard if anyone knows where the abstracted court records for Surry Co can be found this would greatly speed up this process. I asked one of the workers at the Archives if he knew of any such book and he didn't - said it is possible if one had been done that a copy may have been donated to them and if so it would be in the upstairs collection - will check..
Interpretation and speculation:
Now to stir up a little controversy. So far, I have seen no data that would link Joel Childress with the Childers/Childress group and I question, at least until shown some, Lee Rau's suggested connections with that group. In particular, there are at least two Abrahams present and two Stephens, with the likely ones in Bostick's district and connected to the slave holding Childress group. I think the key is to tract Armajor and who is around him. Also, it looks very likely that Armajor and Major are actually the same person (There is a precedent in adjacent Patrick Co VA - Armajor (Major) Hancock b 18 Jul 1770). At no time do both names appear (except that Major shows up on a tax list in KY in 1800 while Armajor is in the Fed Census in NC-probably easy to explain away since there is also a Benjamin and William nearby and no Childresses are found there subsequently-a move they didn't end up making even though they acquired some land). The name switches are a!
ctually more than shown here. In Rutherford Co TN, Armajor (Armatage in some transcriptions) shows up in the 1810 census with Joel (Noel) and Stephen and then Major, with William and James (?200001101000 -- no adult listed present --1800 Stokes Co Fed census), shows up in the 1820 census, while the Joel and Stephen are in other counties in the 1820 census. Futher, I would also argue that the Stephen present with Armajor in TN is likely his son and not the Stephen involved in the court dispute. He was likely an older Stephen than the one who went to TN. Thus Joel's connections appear to be with the slave owning Childress group. As to who Benjamin (Joel's father) is, that is still a mystery. The one in Stokes Co. is much too young and I know of no other one. While, I didn't include for now any of the records past 1815, I will note that a B. William (later listed as William B.) and a B. Edmund do show up - so I guess Benjamin John or John Benjamin is still an option.
I am still open to the possibility that all the Childresses in the area may be closely related. As you can see from the data on the two or more Matthews above there may be a connection through one of them or not - I am trying to trace the various districts history as a way of handling the less than clear cases unlike the two major groups outlined above. There is also the problem of Stephen and William in 1805. While it would appear they belong to the slave holding Childress group why did the name Elisha appear (most likely William's son) which is seen only in the Childres/Childress group.
I would appreciate very much data that anyone has that might impinge on what I have posted and hope that this data (which I haven't seen posted anywhere) will breathe new life and interest into research on the Surry/Stokes Co Childresses. In particular, I would appreciate posts from those who have data supporting their roots coming out of these counties (such as those in TN and MO - a later Major Childress here).
One futher note, a casual glance at the Surry Co Fed census data from later seems to indicate a lot of use of the name Childers. I don't know the significance of this but will point out one little thing I noticed in the Tax Records. The first year that Campbell was in charge of the district where the slave owning Childress clan lived he listed all the Childresses as Childers - not so for any year after that.
