JAMES P. BROWN. One of the most successful farmers that has ever lived
in Grant County is James P. Brown, of the Dry Ridge neighborhood. The
old saying that success in life "comes to him who the most deserves it"
has been fully illustrated and demonstrated in the life of James P.
Brown. He had many a hard struggle in the world before he got a firm
foothold and began to climb. After the war was over, in which he
served as Confederate soldier for a time, he contracted a marriage with
Miss Celia Percival, April 27, 1865, in Belle [sic] County, Kentucky.
He immediately took his young bride back to his native state of
Virginia, where they remained for three years, but seeing but little
chance to better his condition in the old state he migrated to Kentucky
and for two years lived in Boone County and worked on a farm as a hired
hand. Then he moved to Grant and leased a farm in the woods from Dr.
S. S. Scott. After four years of the hardest kind of toil he took his
savings and went back to the county of Boone and bought a small farm.
Later he returned to Grant and bought a large farm of 265 acres from
Hubbard H. Smith. In buying this farm he went into debt $5,500.00 and
paid every dollar of it in three years. That was in the palmy days of
tobacco raising, with new ground, big crops and fine prices. Mr.
Brown's next move was to the farm where he now lives, which he bought
and paid for and afterward bought a great deal more in the neighborhood,
until he became a very large land owner and a wealthy citizen. He owns
a fine place and a beautiful residence at this day, but has given each
one of his eleven children $500.00 each, and sickness in his family in
the last few years has swept away some of his former savings. His wife
has raised for him eleven children, two of whom are dead. Their names
are Kirtley Brown, who died June 22, 1899, and Maggie Brown, who died
May 26, 1900, aged 17 years. His living children are J. J. Brown, who
married the daughter of R. H. Childers; J. C. Brown, who married the
daughter of J. S. Carter; J. F. Brown, who married the daughter of W. T.
Riley; Amanda J. Brown, who married a son of R. H. Childers; J. H.
Brown, who is now in California for his health and unmarried; W. M.
Brown, who has been a regular soldier in the Philippines, but who has
been sent home recently, and who was mustered out of the service on the
26th day of May, and the three young children, who are at home, to-wit:
H. T. Brown, Nellie D. Brown and R. C. Brown. James P. Brown is a man
with a big heart, generous and kind to his family, indulgent to his
children and kindly hearted to all the world. His home is one of the
happiest in the county as well as one of the best.

E. SCOTT BROWN ws born in Allen County, Ky., December 3, 1846. His
father, William A. Brown, is also a native Kentuckian, born April 22,
1820, and is now sixty-five years of age; he has been a man of
considerable local prominence, and has held the offices of magistrate and
superintendent of public instruction in Allen County. His vocation has
been that of a farmer. He married, in 1846, Sarah H. Alexander, of
Allen County. To them have been born six childen: Eugene Scott, George
L., Allie, Tee, Ella and Nannie C. (the last two deceased). Our
subject's mother, Mrs. Sarah (Alexander) Brown, was born in 1820, and is
now sixty-five years of age; she is a daughter of Amzi C. Alexander, a
native of Mecklenburgh County, N. C., who came to Kentucky at an early
day. He held the office of magistrate of Allen County, Ky. for many
years. In 1819 he married Elizabeth W. Holliday, who as born in Russell
County, Va., in 1800, and who now at the advanced age of eighty-five
years retains her faculties in a remarkable degree, and is "able to walk
a mile without assistance." Her father, Charles Holliday, was a native
of Baltimore, Md., her grandfather, James Holliday, a native of
Scotland. His father, Andrew Alexander, was born in North Carolina;
served with distinction in defense of his country in the war of 1776,
and was in the engagement at the siege of Charleston. Allsey Brown, the
grandfather of our subject, was born in North Carolina in 1793; he was
one of the pioneers, and a large land owner of Allen County. He died in
October, 1864, aged seventy-one years. His wife, whom he married in
1816, was Nancy T. Childress, whose parents, as well as herself, were
natives of South Carolina; her death occurred in Allen County, Ky., in
1878; her age was eighty years. E. Scott Brown received a good
education in youth, taught school for several years, and afterward
completed his educational course from Prof. Dunn's High school at
Bowling Green in 1867. He then followed the profession of a teacher for
two years in Minnesota. He was postmaster and merchant at Scottsville
from 1869 to 1875, when he resigned the office on account of failing
health, and took a trip to Florida; remained two years, and while there
made some fortunate land investments at Do Land, which afterward yielded
him a handsome profit. After returning to Kentucky, having recovered
his health, he studied law, and in 1878 was licensed to practice at the
bar by the circuit court, Gov. Leslie and Gen. Joseph H. Lewis, now
judge of the court of appeals, acting as his examiners. He practiced
law until 1880, when he was elected clerk of the Allen Circuit Court,
which office he has filled with ability and correctness up to the
present time. His marriage took place October 29, 1872, with Lucy N.,
daughter of Gilbert M. and Mary W. Mulligan, of Scottsville, Allen, Ky.
Their marriage has been blessed by the birth of two daughters: Winston
J. and Fannie E. Mr. Brown is a member of the Methodist Episcopal
Church South, and has for many years been an active Sunday-school
worker. He is a Master Mason, and for a number of years was treasurer
of Graham Lodge, No. 208. Politically he is a Republican. Mr. Brown as
a business man is energetic and accurate in all his transactions.
Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed.,
1886. Allen County.
JOHN H. BROWN, born in Allen County, Ky., August 31, 1817, is a son of
Allsey Brown, a native of North Carolina, who was born about the year
1790, and who married Nancy Childress, whose parents were North
Carolinians. She died in the year 1878 and left nine children, of which
number John H. is the second. Allsey Brown was during his life-time a
successful farmer, and acquired a considerable property. His death
occurred in 1864. He was a son of Drury Brown, who was of Enlish lineae
and a native of North Carolina, from which State he removed to Kentucky
in the year 1800; he was a farmer; died in Allen County, Ky. John B.
Brown had few advantages of school education, but he improved every
opportunity for reading, and is well versed in the rules of business and
the literature of the day. When he was about twenty-three years of age
he married Sarah R. Epperson, of Sumner (now Macon) County, Tenn., with
whom he lived happily for ten years. She died in 1849, leaving four
children: Nancy E., Martha P., Marcus W. and Charles A. In July, 1850,
Mr. Brown married his second wife, Letitia Bright, of Allen County, Ky.
On the 14th of December, 1882, she departed this life, aged sixty-nine
years. She left no children of her own; it is said by her friends that
"she was as good a step-mother as ever lived." Politically Mr. Brown is
a Democrat and has served one term in the office of judge of Allen
County Court, to which office he was elected in 1867. He is the owner
of a well kept and well improved farm of 400 acres, lying within three
miles of the town of Scottsville; during his term in the judicial
capacity he continued to make his home on the farm, making the trip to
his office every day on horse-back. Mr. Brown is a man of strict
integrity and his judicial acts while in office were above cirticism.
He is a member of the Methodist Church (South), in which he has for many
years held the office of steward. Mrs. Brown is a member of the Baptist
faith. Mr. Brown is a Master Mason, and a member of Graham Lodge, No.
208.

W. H. CHILDERS. There are few better known men in Grant county than
"Billy" Childers, as he is called. He is a native of Grant county and
"to the manner born." He is a son of Wesley Childers and Lucy Childers,
and was born in Grant county near Dry Ridge April 22d 1840. In his father's family
there were three children, one boy and two girls, all of whom are dead but W. H.
Childers. When only a lad his father died and left him an orphan. He was raised
in Williamstown by Squire Lucas, attended the common schools. He began life for
himself as a clerk in Lucas' store. While serving in the store as a clerk he was
elected a constable of the district and served for seven years. Later in life he
served as Deputy Sheriff for six years under E. K. Green and Ezra D. Webster. At
the breaking out of the Civil War, Mr. Childers joined his forces to the "Lost
Cause." He enlisted in Company G, Fifth Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry, and was
elected third lieutenant in Captain Coombs' company. He and his company took a
prominent part in the battle of Lebanon Junction and Green River, and he was in
many other engagements of minor importance. For two years his company was part of
John Morgan's cavalry, and was captured with the command at Buffington's Island on
September 1863. He was taken as a prisoner to Camp Douglas and there kept in
close confinement for twenty-two months, when he was exchanged and returned to his
home in Kentucky. The war over, he returned to Williamstown and took up his life
where he had left off, as clerk in the store.
In politics he has been a Democrat all of his life, and has served
his party long and well. He has never asked for office though often
solicited to do so. He married Miss Louisa Simon, daughter of Francis Simon,
shortly after the close of the war, and to their union five children have been
born, two boys and three girls, all of whom are now living. They are: Mrs. Lutie
Alcoke, wife of E. J. Alcoke, of Corinth; Mrs. Etta Fletcher, wife of Robert V.
Fletcher, a prominent young lawyer at Pontotoc, Miss.; Frank W. Childers,
bookkeeper for the Mining Gazette Company at Houghton, Mich.; Willie Childers, on
the farm with his father, and Miss Mabel, now ten years old.
Mr. Childers and his wife are each members of the Christian Church.
They own between them over 500 acres of the best hill land in Grant county, much
of which is in timber, in which the woodman's axe has yet made no impression. Mr.
Childers is a large farmer and stock raiser. He cultivates and grows to
perfection all of the staple cereals of this
latitude. Stock raising is his "long suit." His fine herd of Black Angus cattle
are farmed far and near. He has given all of his children a good education, and
started them in life and is a deserving, excellent citizen.
Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901,
reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society.
ROBERT H. CHILDERS was born in Grant County, Ky., December 23, 1843, and
is a son of the late Judge Henry Childers. He is the second child in a
family of thirteen children. Their names now are Mary Dunlap, R. H.
Childers, Newt. Childers, Lizzie Beard, Jennie Brewer, Alice Dunlap,
Marion Childers, Emma Markham, W. C. Childers, Sidney J. Childers and
Nannie Childers, all living. The subject of this sketch was reared a
farmer, and has followed that vocation all his life. He now owns three
hundred acres of fine land in the neighborhood of Delia, well stocked and well
watered. He is a director in the Dry Ridge Deposit Bank and a large stockholder.
In politics he is a Democrat of the Downingsville type, and has been an ardent
party worker for many years. He has never been a candidate for any office and
never expects to be. He was married to Miss Sarah E. Conrad, a sister of Hon. J.
C. B. Conrad, in November, 1868. Eleven children have been born to this union,
eight girls and three boys, all of whom are living, and eight of them whom are
living at home with the father, the other three being married, except young
Robert, who is Deputy Sheriff of Grant County under Sheriff G. S. Webb, and lives
at Williamstown. They are all intelligent and industrious, and altogether go to
make up a very interesting family.
Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30,
1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical
Society.
ROBERT CHILDERS is the second son of Robert H. and Sarah Elizabeth
(Conrad) Childers, and was born near Downingsville, November 13, 1875.
He comes of prolific stock, there being eight girls and three boys in
his father's family, all of whom are living. His father is one of the
largest land owners in his neighborhood, having several hundred acres
of good farm land, and Bob, as he is familiarly called, was reared on
his father's farm and followed farming until of age. He received a
good common school education at the Childers' school house, and later
took a business course in Wilbur R. Smith's Commercial College,
Lexington, after which he came home and for several months was Deputy
County Court Clerk, and had positions in various other business
establishments in Williamstown. His paternal grandfather was the late
Judge Henry Childers, and he is a nephew of Hon. J. C. B. Conrad,
present member of the lower branch of the Kentucky Legislature, and the
Democratic nominee for the second term. Bob is a "dyed in the wool"
Democrat, and has been a worker in the ranks since he was grown. In
May of last year he was appointed Deputy Sheriff of Grant County by
Sheriff G. S. Webb, which position he has filled very creditably and
satisfactorily since. While he has never held an elective office, and
never been a candidate for one, it is by no means improbable that he
will some day come before the people as a candidate, and if he does,
will be a man hard to beat. He is of good moral character, strictly
sober, and of a genial, sociable turn. He is a member of the Oswego
Tribe of Red Men, and is an honored member in their councils.
Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901,
reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society.
HENRY CHILDERS was born at Dry Ridge February 11, 1815, four years before the
county of Grant was established by law, and at the time when Grant county was a
precinct of Pendleton. After Grant county was laid off and organized the first
County Court was held at the Childers residence at Dry Ridge. Judge Childers was
married April 12, 1838 to Elizabeth Bryant Conyers. Seventeen children were born
to this union. In early life he was a Whig, and a devoted admirer and follower of
Henry Clay. He afterward cast his fortunes with the Democratic party. In 1878 he
was elected Judge of the Grant County Court on the Democratic ticket, and was
re-elected to that office in 1882, serving in that important position for eight
years. He retired to private life in 1886. In religion he was a Primitive Baptist
and in every respect a model citizen. He died in Grant county in August, 1899.

ADAM L. CHILDERS was born twelve miles northeast of Lexington, Fayette
Co., Ky., January 2, 1820, and is the second son of Lindsey and
Catherine (Lydick) Childers, natives of Garrard and Fayette Counties,
Ky. The maternal grandfather, Jacob Lydick, was born in Pennsylvania.
The paternal grandfather, Goolsberry Childers, was from Virginia, was
in the war of the Revolution, and afterward immigrated to Garrard
County. Adam L. Childers was reared on a farm in Fayette County, and
when a boy learned the brick laying trade; served three years'
apprenticeship, and afterward worked at his trade from seventeen until
he was forty-nine years of age. In the meantime he came to Woodford
County, and located in Versailles. He abandoned his trade for the farm.
He was one of the inspectors of construction of the courthouse, Free
Mason Hall, etc. He was married in 1843 to Miss Mary J. Smith, of
Fayette County; she died in 1848. In 1851 Mr. Childers married Miss
Susanna M'Cloed, a native of Bourbon County, Ky. One child living
was born to the first wife, Lindsey D.; three are living by the second:
Kate, Maggie and Henry. There is one deceased child, George. Mr.
Childers owns 345 acres in the county. The family are members of the
Methodist Episcopal Church.

T. JEFF CHILDRESS, farmer at Erlanger, Kenton County, Ky., was born in
Boone County, Ky., January 31, 1836, and is the fifth of six children born to Dr.
Henry F. B. and Eliza A. (Carey) Childress. Dr. Henry Childress was born and
reared in Virginia. He graduated in medicine from the University of Virginia, and
about 1827 moved to Kentucky, and settled in Pendleton County for a few years,
then moved to Boone County, where he practice his profession the remainder of his
days, and died in 1845; his wife still survives him. Thomas J. Childress was
reared on the farm, and received his education at the common schools of Boone
County. In 1858 he made a trip over the plains to the Rocky Mountains and Pike's
Peak, but returning in the fall of the same year, devoted his attention to
agricultural pursuits until 1862, when he raised a company and joined the Sixth
Kentucky Confederate Battalion, under Col. Jessey. He was promoted to first
lieutenant, and served in that capacity until the close of the war, being a
participant in many of the principal battles. He then returned home, and has
followed farming ever since. He owns a farm of ninety-six acres in Kenton
County. February 7, 1867, he married Miss Mary E. Bristow, daughter of Reuben L.
and Statira (Stevens) Bristow, of Kenton County. Four children have blessed this
union: Lewis L., Statira B., Thomas K. (deceased) and Henry F. Politically Mr.
Childress is a Democrat.

AMASA P. CHILDRESS, son of Henry and Sarah (Greer) Childress, was born
December 5, 1819, in Franklin County, Va. His parents were also natives
of Franklin County, and had a family of three sons and three daughters.
Henry Childress principally followed farming, but in early life was a
teacher and also a carpenter; he was the owner, on leaving Virginia, of
twenty slaves. In 1836 he immigrated to Barren County, Ky., and settled
in Tracy Precinct, on about 300 acres, where he resided until his death,
in 1871, at the age of eighty-three years. He served as constable and
deputy assessor, and fought in the war of 1812. His father, Robert
Childress, was born and reared in Goochland County, Va., was a soldier
in the Revolution and received a pension of $96 per year. He was a
farmer and slave holder, and died at the age of ninety-six years. He
and wife, Rachel (Easters) Childress, of Virginia, were of Irish
descent. Mrs. Sarah Childress died in Barren County, in 1871, aged
eighty-three years. Her father, James Greer, of Franklin County, Va.
was a farmer and slave holder, and a soldier of the Revolution. He
married Rhoda Divers, of Virginia. Amasa P. Childress was reared on a
farm, and was obliged at an early age to take charge of the negroes, his
father being in feeble health. He remained with his parents until the
age of twenty-three, when, on December 20, 1842, he married Verlinda J.
Ellis, of Barren County, Ky., a daughter of George and Kittie B.
(Gillock) Ellis. George Ellis and wife were natives, respectively, of
Fayette and Barren Counties, and of Irish origin; he was a farmer and
slave holder. To Mr. and Mrs. Childress twelve children were born:
James Robert, Sarah C. Seay and Mary E. Austin (twins), Skiler G., Julia
I. Reed, George C., Abraham C., Darna (deceased), Joseph P. N., John M.,
Kittie B. and Henry M. Mr. Childress after his marriage resided at Dry
Fork postoffice, three miles below where he now lives. In 1854 he
located on 170 acres on his present place; he now owns 220 acres, 150 of
which are under cultivation, and improved with a five residence. Before
the war he owned five slaves. In 1852 he was elected constable, and
served one term; in 1866 he served one term as sheriff. He has been
frequently requested to be a candidate for representative, but has
always declined. In politics he was, prior to 1860, a Whig, and cast
his first presidential vote for Harrison; he is now a Democrat. Mr.
Childress and wife are members of the Reformed Church.

REGISTRANTS 1807 LOTTERY ELBERT COUNTY, GA
Elbert County was made from Wilkes County 1790 and a part of Madison
County was added 1837. Part of Elbert County was set off to Madison 1811, 1819
and 1837. A Part of Elbert County was set off to Hart County 1853. The County
Seat is Elberton, Georgia.
The registration for the Lottery of 1807 was in 1806. The Lottery of
1805 is the only lottery for which we have a complete list of all those who
registered to draw land; in the other lotteries, with only a few exceptions, we
have only the names of those who were fortunate enough to draw land. Elbert
County is one of the few counties which has a list of all who registered to draw
land. The qualifications for registering were the same for the 1807 lottery as
for the 1805 except that those who were fortunate enough to draw land in 1805
were not permitted to register in 1806.
(These lottery lists, along with a few other sources, help in a measure
to substitute for the missing census records)

of the data, a copy of which I am sending you, "ABRAM C".....
"In this you will note references to BURTON CHILDRESS, also to the fact that
late members of the family make mention of their residence in Strawberry
Plains, which is in Jefferson County, where they say your father resided
before going West."
"This data is rather incomplete, or unsatisfactory, inso far as the family
line is concerned, althugh it is quite possible we both desended from the
original ABRAM who came to America in 1645, of which it appears your
grandsire, BURTON was a grandson." [NOTE: a note by the typist cannot be
read, says "now doubt this also, 1941]
"As this data shows BURTON CHILDRESS to have been a Colonel in the
Revolutionary Army. I hope it may assist in fulfilling the ----of your
daughters concerning their D.A.R. status."
"Hoping to hear from you again, I am, with all good wishes,
Very truly yours,

Dear Sir -
"Yours of the 8th., just reached me. The data it contains I am very glad to
get, it is at least a start. My father died when I was 16 but I don't
remember ever asking him much about the family. Father was born December 29,
1804, and had a brother who was -----years older and we called him Uncle ABE.
He made his home with us for a year or so when I was 4 or 5 years of age and
he is the only one of the family I ever knew. I in some way get the
impression that the Grandfather's name was JOHN [Childress]. My father's
name was MOSES [Childress]. I think there was a large family both boys and
girls. I think there was a girl named NANCY [Childress] and a brother he
called MATT [Childress]. I am very grateful to you for your help and will
follow it up and see what I can make of it. What other data I have is in
Iowa and we will not be home until about June 1st, will pass on to you
anything I get that I think you would be interested in. Sam THORNSBURG of
Knoxville Tenn. (his mother was a CHILDRESS) told me my Grandfather fought in
the *Battle of King's Mountain. Sam said he would get me the record but he
never did."
Very truly yours,

These four letters between Dr. M. CHILDRESS and Mr. A.L. CHILDRESS were also
published in past issues of "Childress Chatter" (publisher, Molly Reigard).
If you have any additional information reference the CHILDRESS's mentioned in
these letters, please share with us. According to the now publisher of
[previously, Childress Chatter] Jo Ann Childers - There is much interest on
those mentioned in these letters.
I have always believed that family letters share insight into the every day
lives of those who wrote them. They shed a different light into what family
research was during the 1930's when there were no computers! Letters and
discussions were the norm. Family get-to-gethers where cousins, aunts &
uncles talked of family - some in the same towns, others far away. But
letters like these also tell us that these families were yearning for
information on their lost ancestors. They both basically did not have much
family information. Dr. Childress knew his father's and his brother's name.
He thought that his grandfather was in the ARW. He thought his name to be
JOHN CHILDRESS and that he fought at Kings Mountain. We know that a *JOHN
CHILDRESS born 1755 died 1844 TN did fight in the Battle of Kings Mountain
and his papers can be seen in CFA, ARW Pension Book to be published. From
what Dr. Childress said, its suggested that his father was from this JOHN
Childress. The name BURTON Childress has been associated with JOHN CHILDRESS
born 1755 VA who received a ARW Pension in Rutherford Co, TN. He was married
probably more than several times, but one marriage was to Martha CALHOUN of
Laurens SC. He was said to have sired at least 18 children.
What of Mr. A.L. Childress?... His brother John W. Childress Jr. wrote his
memoirs when a aged man. He did not know who Joel's father was as he stated
the same data on a tombstone which he said was Joel, son of John. Benjamin
Childress was the father of Joel, per the Surry County, NC Orphan Court
Records. Joel was bound out in 1789 (aged 12) to one ABRAHAM CHILDRESS. Was
this Abraham possibly a brother of Joel's father? A Stephen Childress was
also in the mix, as he also went to the same court and wanted the child Joel
to be bound to him, however Joel went with Abraham Childress till aged 21
yrs..[data located by researcher, Lee Rau].
I have other letters and abstracts from a family diary that I found
fascinating. I believe most researchers enjoy family letters. Did any of
you read, "Griffin and Sabine"? The fascinating book of letters between
Griffin and Sabine? The interest in old letters is seen in the collections
seen on Ebay - Commission and auction houses...I hope you enjoyed reading
these letters. If you have anything to add, please let us hear from you!
And I will do the same!

Hi List,
Ref the "Childress Letters" and my post of May 10, 2001 -
Mr. A.L. Childress in his reference to Abraham CHILDRESS who died 1763 - I
failed to give the date of his WILL and also correct dates for his widow...
As follows -
Abraham CHILDRES (one "S" according to the original copy of Will) Will
written 1763 Albemarle Co, VA, Probate 1764, WILL BOOK 2, pages 164 - 66.
This original copy is found in the "Childers-Childress Family Association,
Inc" - "Early Virginia WIlls and Some Land Records" pages 7-9
Also, Lucy Thomas Neville CHILDRESS Will was dated NOT 1702, but written 1792
Amherst Co, VA Will Book 3, 1786 - 1800. pp. 366-367, from the same source
above and from the original copy of the WILL.
Thanks!

FYI
The last letter posted was from Dr. M. Childress dated May 13, 1930 to Mr.
A.L. Childress of TN. This is a continuation of the letters which passed
between the two Childress's and their discussions of the different branches
of the Childress family. See "Notes" for references to these discussions.
MAY Seventeenth, 1930 -
Dr. M. CHILDRESS,
Iowa
Dear Doctor -
"I was very much pleased to have your letter of the 13th instant, pertaining
to our possible kinship. A matter in which I have become greatly interested
in recent years."
"During this time, I have been able to assemble quite a lot of interesting
and valuable data; however, not enough to clearly establish a complete chain
from the earlier members of the family."
"This information consists of various letters, etc. which I have never had
the opportunity of getting together in connected form; my official duties are
somwhat restricting, but I have promised myself that it would be done
sometime."
"My earliest record is of ABRAM CHILDRESS** who died in 1764 in Albemarle,
Virginia. I cannot trace my own family back to him, but you mentioned having
an uncle ABE which indicates that you are doubtless of his direct line. He
left a son by the name of ABRAM also."
I have met CHILDRESS'es in several sections of East Tennessee and note very
striking facial resemblances to my own family in some of them and feel sure
we must be offshoots of the original ancestors."
"The oldest authenic record I have is of my great grandfather who came to
Middle Tennessee from near Salem, now Salem NC; finally settling near
Murfreesboro, Tennessee, his name was JOEL and I recall as a child climbing
upon his tombstone in the garden of the old home and reading its inscription;
JOEL CHILDRESS born 1777 Died 1819 -the son of JOHN, the son of JOEL. I have
no authenic record of those two preceeding JOELS, nor names (since this was
written I have learned of a brother JAMES CHILDRESS, who lived in Alabama,
born 1773, died 1836) of ----and sisters of our great-grandfather. He had
four children, a son [per BIBLE record, son named BENJAMIN W.] SUSAN, SARAH,
and JOHN WHITSITT (his wife being ELIZABETH WHITSITT of a Virginia family),
the later being my father's father. SARAH became the wife of JAMES POLK, the
eleventh President. After her death in Nashville, and I as a lad, recall her
most vividly and could have secured valuable genealogical data from her if I
had then given the subject a thought; as it is, the subject seems to have
been neglected by all of my elders, with the result that my information
consists of mere scraps."
"As before stated, my own immediate family is living in Rutherford County
(Murfreesboro) and of my grandfather's family (17) I am the sole surviving
male of the line left of the name in Tennessee, my two brothers residing in
the East ----I have male cousins living elsewhere."
"My father's name was JOHN WHITSITT CHILDRESS, Jr. -----ADAIR LYON CHILDRESS,
my mother being MARY ADAIR LYON, my younger brother is JOHN W. CHILDRESS lll
and lives in W. Tennessee. The name JOEL has not been carried on in my
immediate line or elsewhere so far as I know."
"A contemporary of my great-grandfather, JOEL was a prominent man here in
Nashville (JUDGE JOHN CHILDRESS), but I am unable to make the connection; he
may have been a brother or at least a first cousin, but the gap remains
unfilled. The family was a very prominent one; a daughter being the wife of
CATRON, a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (appointed by Andrew JACKSON,
seventh President) and a son, GEORGE CAMPBELL (or CLACK) CHILDRESS, being the
author of the Constitutions of both the Republic and the State of Texas, he
being then a crony of General SAM HOUSTON who brought him to Texas for that
purpose. Many survivors of this family are known to me here, but we have
never been able to bridge the existing gap in the line."
"I recall hearing my great-aunt, Mrs. POLK, speak often of Mrs CATRON, each
residing in Washington at the same time. Then I merely assumed they were
friends because of their similar political situations, but have since
concluded they may have had a blood relationship upon which their intimacy
was founded - doubless third cousins possibly." [he refers to John Childress
born 1735c VA left an 1811 Nashville TN Will & who m. Elizabeth Armstrong &
Nancy Hickman and had son Judge John Childress who m. Elizabeth Robertson.
John Childress Sr was son of Henry JR who married Mary Farmer and who left a
1760 Will in Lunenburg Co, VA]
"I have had some correspondence with EDMUND H. CHILDRESS, a newspaper man of
Fairfield, Illinois, who sent me a printed genealogical chart showing
original progenitor, ISHAM CHILDRESS, as being at Milton (?) Tennessee, a
village not more than a dozen miles from Murfreesboro, yet I have absolutely
no information or legend concerning such a family - originating in the same
county with my own."
"It is a pleasure to find someone interested in this subject and I would be
most glad to hear further from you and to give you the benefit of any other
data I may be able to secure. If I should ever find the time or the
inspiration to complete the transcriptions of the scraps of information now
on hand, I will be glad to let you have a copy."
"Hoping to meet you at some time, I am, with much regard,
Cordially yours,
A.L. CHILDRESS" end -
Note: Did you notice that Mr. A.L.Childress never mentioned the engraved
genealogical information which has been said to have been engraved upon the
tombstone of Joel Childress... "arrived from Wales, 1745, in their own ship".
Mr. Childress did give the information that the tombstone said, "Joel
Childress etc...son of John, son of Joel". Mr. Childress concludes that he
does not have any authentic record of those two preceeding JOELS nor any
other names. While reading his letter to Dr. M. Childress, I expected him to
give the Dr. this information as it would seem to be of major importance,
however there was no mention of any genealogical data reference a ship from
Wales nor the 1745 arrival date of the Childress family.
It is now known from the research of Lee Rau, from the 1789 Surry CO, NC
Orphans Court Records, that JOEL CHILDRESS was bound out to ABRAHAM CHILDRESS
in 1789 because JOEL's father named BENJAMIN CHILDRESS was deceased.
The reference Mr. A.L. Childress gave to **Abraham CHILDRESS is as follows -
Abraham was called Abraham Childers lll by the author (Alberta Marjorie
Dennstedt, San Diego, CA) for the "Virginia Genealogist Magazine". The
"Childers - Childress Family Association Inc. "Early Virginia Wills and Some
Land Records", Pages 7-9 has as follows: ABRAHAM CHILDRES - Albemarle Co, VA
WILL BOOK 2, pp 164-66, Wife, Lucy CHILDRES, Sons - William Cannon CHILDRES,
Abraham CHILDRES and Creed CHILDRES. Daugh's - Ionnah Taylor, Tabith Dawson,
Lucretia Tucker, Elizabeth Thomas, Mary Ann Carter. Grandson - David Pryor.
(From Original Copy)
*Abraham CHILDRES widow, Lucy Thomas Neville CHILDRESS also left a WILL dated
1702, Probate 1795. Amherst Co, VA WILL Bk 3, pp 366-7 as follows -
Son - James Thomas - Daugh's - Betheniah Hilton, Martha Hopson (wife of Henry
Hobson, Trustee for his wife's mother) , Judith Mitchell, Grandsons - James
Turner, Jesse Allen, Norbourin Thomas and Neil Thomas, Grand-daughters -
Slythy Turner, Martha and Betheniah Allen and brother Michael Thomas. (From
Original Copy) end...
