Hello list,
Hello Kay,
Have just seen your post ref: Georgia marriages. Do you suppose those
listed were actually Childress? I am curious as to the spelling. I have
only seen one reference in our records here in Georgia for the surname of
Childree or Childry. I recall his name was William Childry and he had a land
grant 1773-5. I know quite a few Childress in the Atlanta area. In
particuliar a branch whose ancestors lived in the Southwest part of Atlanta
during the Civil War. In fact, I have seen the area where they once lived.
Quite beautiful and secluded. A Georgian home sits back off the road with a
large amount of acreage. A old family of Childress had lived there. The
street was Childress Drive. However, that was around 1985, so I am not sure
it is still there. We also have another place called John A. White Park. I
know the history. John A. White was a large land owner. He or his son
married a Childress. The park is around 5 miles from Childress Drive.
Atlanta is not that old! Founded in the 1850's, we do have history here. A
major Civil War battle was fought right in the heart of downtown Atlanta.
Hope all of you have a pleasant Spring!
Ted Childress

Hi List,
Several years ago, I took a tour of Historic Atlanta (Georgia). Among the
different historic sites was the HURT PARK. I had asked the tour guide about
the naming of the park and she said JOEL HURT. The park is one of the oldest
in downtown Atlanta and I became fascinated with the location and any history
it may have had. I then called various libraries and was told that there
were manuscripts about the HURT family. I tried to get the history thru
loan, but never did! I had forgotten about the HURTS until I came across the
actual manuscripts online. In reading 1950's HURT history, I came across
PHILEMON CHILDRESS. I had never seen a record of a PHILEMON in Amelia Co, VA
during this time frame.
According to the records I have seen, there were quite a few families by the
name of Childress, Childres and Childrey (spellings) in Amelia. I had seen
them in the early tithe lists and in deeds and several wills. "Hobson's
Chapel" by Gish also has information concerning the areas around Flatt Creek
where the Hurts also lived. My ancestor, Thomas Hamblin who left a 1811 Will
in Mecklenburg Co, VA also lived in Amelia and owned land there. My
ancestor's the Seats also owned land in this part of Amelia and they connect
to my Ezells who married many of the earliest families in VA including my
Childress, and Webb ancestor's.who connect to Vaughn..who also lived in
Amelia at one time or another. If you have information on PHILEMON CHILDRESS
of Amelia Co, VA please let us know!
"THE EARLY HURT FAMILY OF VIRGINIA" by Oscar H. HURT, 1950c
Pages 7 and 8 of the original manuscript:
"At a Court held for Amelia County, VA on February 19, 1741, "Hans HENDRICK
appointed surveyor of the road from CROFFORD'S home unto BURTON'S road over
Fistt Creek. John HARRIS, William WILLIAMS, William BRUMFIELD, Wm FARLEY,
JR., John HENDRICK, Hance HENDRICK, JR., and PHILEMON CHILDRESS to be
employed thereon". (ORDER BOOK, 1, page 189, AMELIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA.)" end
NOTE: As you can read from the above, there are surnames of whom we have
seen before. HENDRICK...Knox Co, TN marriage of MITCHELL CHILDRESS as he
married Rachel HENDRIX. I have done some research on the surname of Rachel.
I have seen the name spelt both ways. According to the Hendrix-L at
rootsweb, the name was spelt originally as HENDRICK. Possibly Rachel's
family came from this area and were of this family. There is other
information in Mr. Hurt's manuscript in reference to the family of HENDRICK.
I am familiar with the name WILLIAM WILLIAMS. I believe him to be in the
same family of ELISHA WILLIAMS. According to my relative, Col James Edmunds
Saunders who wrote, "Early Settlers of Alabama", Elisha WILLIAMS was of Welsh
ancestry and his widow who was the daughter of Judge PHILIPS (also Welsh
ancestry) married widower, JOHN WHITSETT CHILDRESS, son of Joel & Elizabeth
WHITSETT CHILDRESS. JOHN was the brother of Sarah CHILDRESS POLK. John W.
CHILDRESS had married 1st his second wife's sister who was also the daughter
of Judge PHILIPS. The PHILIPS had come from Wales to PA and migrated to
Nelson CO, VA then to Nashville, TN with stop overs in KY...but they were
early settlers in Nashville, TN and lived there. The PHILIPS family were
connected to many early TN families including the GILCHRISTS, CONWAYS,
AVENTS, SAUNDERS, BANKHEADS and many others.
The other surname above which caught my eye was JOHN HARRIS. While this is
fairly a common Christian name, the HARRIS family have several or more
connections to the CHILDRESS families and marriages as well.
I also note from the HURT Manuscripts...the migration into SURRY CO, NC.
This area was known for the large CHILDRESS families who lived there...some
of those migrating to TN, SC, GA and other states...One Childress in
particuliar was JOHN CHILDRESS Sr who settled in Nashville, TN and sired a
large family.
The HURT manuscripts have a index and much information. You may see other
names from your families. I am sure that was Mr. Hurts intention and I
appreciate his work as I am sure you will.

Hi List...
This is a CORRECTION for my earlier post ref Mr. William Cabler Moore's,
"Childress-Hickman-Smith Notes"...the DATE should have read, 1970, not 1870.
Sorry about that!
MaryJean [Childress Voegtlin]
Hi List,
I have read data in the rootsweb archives and it seems that there are
descendants of JOHN CHILDRESS of VA/NC and Nashville TN who have no
information concerning JOHN's first wife named Elizabeth ARMSTRONG. Nor did
they locate a WILL... I have a Will abstract from Surry Co, NC as follows:
"SURRY CO, NC, WILL ABSTRACTS" LYNN
PAGE 34:
BOOK I: 158...WILL of WILLIAM ARMSTRONG, 29 March 1779...WIFE CATHERINE gets
negro man Boss. Sons: JOHN and JAMES get 5 sheep each. Son WILLIAM gets
negro girl Agg, livestock, 150 acres adj my son HUGH ARMSTRONG. Son-in-law,
JOHN CHILDERS* (Childress). My part of my brother JOHN ARMSTRONG'S estaate to
be equally divided between JOHN CHILDRES, WILLIAM ARMSTRONG, DILLION BLEVINS,
MUMFORD SMITH. Son-in-law JAMES SPENCER gets 5 sheep. EXRS: JOHN CHILDERS
(Childress), William Armstrong. SIT: James Meredith, W. Marlin, Samuel
Meredith. Prvd by James Meredith and W. Marlin. Recorded February Court,
1782.
NOTE:
JOHN CHILDRESS married first Elizabeth ARMSTRONG, daughter of William
Armstrong of Surry Co, NC as shown above. After his first wife's death, JOHN
CHILDRESS married second, NANCY HICKMAN.
The Nashville TN Archives have CHILDRESS-HICKMAN histories which confirm
these marriages. See also, William Cabler Moore's CHILDRESS & HICKMAN &
SMITH NOTES, 1870.
Other important genealogical papers can be seen in the TN Archives in
Nashville such as Catherine Berry Pilcher AVERY, (1894-1984 PAPERS..from
ca1500-1971. Catherine was a descendant of JOHN CHILDRESS (Nashville, TN)
from his daughter, PATSY CHILDRESS who married MATTHEW BARROW to NANCY BARROW
who married MERRITT SCOTT PILCHER, Patsy's parents. Many of the families in
her papers include the earliest settlers in TN and VA...which date back to
the c1500. Her family and some of their connections are related to the
families who are descended from Capt William Hobson and Janette McLaurine of
VA and Nashville, TN of from which my husband (George) is a direct
descendant. I hope to post more information on these papers which I found to
be very interesting and helpful with my research.
*As you can see, this WILL abstract has two spellings for JOHN's surname and
was shown as CHILDERS and CHILDRES. I have copies of original documents for
JOHN CHILDRESS b1735c VA and who left a 1810 WILL in Nashville, TN, his name
was sometimes spelt as Childers, but mostly CHILDRES and CHILDRESS in those
documents...According to these copies of original documents and the William
Cabler Moore Childress-Hickman-Smith Notes...and other authorities...JOHN was
the son of Henry CHILDERS JR. whose name was shown to be spelled several or
more ways (Childers/Childres/Childress) and his wife Mary (FARMER).

HUMPHREYS COUNTY The first county seat was established in 1816, at
Reynoldsville, which was named for John B. Reynolds, then a
representative in Congress. The Supreme Court, also, at that time, held
its sessions in Reynoldsville for that division of the state. The site
of the county seat was on fifty acres of land donated by Alexander
Brevard. When Benton County was erected in 1835, largely from territory
previously included in Humphreys, the county seat was moved to Waverly,
which was named for Scott's Waverley novels. The site of Waverly was
donated by Davis Childress and the survey was made by Isaac Little in
1836.

JOHN W. STAPLES.
A prominent representative of the legal profession in Harriman is John
W.
Staples, who was born in Morgan county, Tennessee, on the 17th of July,
1870, a son of Samuel H. and Mary E. (Childress) Staples. His paternal
great-grandfather, John Staples, was a native of Virginia and among the
early pioneer settlers of Tennessee. He was captain in the Revolutionary
army under General Washington and prior to the close of the war was
promoted to the rank of Major for gallant service. The paternal
grandparents were Benjamin T. and Elizabeth (Hall) Staples, natives of
Tennessee. Benjamin T. Staples was killed at Mill Springs, Kentucky,
during the Civil war, having served as a lieutenant colonel in the
Eleventh Tennessee Troops. The grandparents on the maternal side were
John and Mary (Bowling) Childress, also natives of Tennessee. Samuel H.
Staples, who was born in 1846, took up the study of law in early life
and practiced his chosen profession until some years prior to his
demise in 1915. His wife, who
was born in 1849, survives him.

WHITTEN DUNCAN.
Industrial activity in Nashville receives stimulus from the
well-directed efforts of Whitten Duncan, vice president of the Phillips
& Buttorf Manufacturing Company, with which he has been identified for
the past thirty-four years, rising to his present position through
energy, determination and ability. His birth occurred near Clifton, in
Hardin county, Tennessee, on the 23d of March, 1865, and his parents
were Rev. T. S. and Isabelle (Childress) Duncan, the former a native of
Lawrence county, Tennessee, and the latter of Alabama. His father was a
minister of the gospel of the Methodist Episcopal church, South, and
also engaged in manufacturing and farming. At the time of his death, he
was serving the Savannah circuit. He passed away on the 5th of
September, 1892. His wife, the mother of Whitten Duncan, is still
living.

MARVIN THEOPHILUS DUNCAN.
Marvin Theophilus Duncan, an eminent educator of Tennessee, who in
September, 1908, established and opened the Duncan College, a
preparatory school for boys at Nashville, and has remained at the head
of this growing institution, was born near Clifton, in Hardin county,
Tennessee, December 22, 1880. His father, Theophilus Sanders Duncan,
was a native of Lawrenceburg, Lawrence county, Tennessee, and his
parents were John and Nancy Duncan, who resided at Lawrenceburg.
Theophilus S. Duncan spent much of his life near Clifton, in Hardin
county, where he owned a farm which he cultivated in connection with his
work in the ministry. For about thirty years he was a prominent minister
of the Methodist Episcopal church, South, and was widely known through
his labors in that connection. He wedded Isabella Childress, a daughter
of James and Elizabeth Childress of Athens, Limestone county, Alabama.
The Duncan family is of Scotch descent, four brothers of the name
having come to this country together in pioneer times, settling in North
and South Carolina.

Hi List...
Do any of you have a "Childress" family tradition which says that your
surname of Childress was Scottish? I do not., but if you do, I am sure the
list would enjoy hearing your family tradition.
I must say, for the last several months, I have been doing research on the
families of those who connect to Childress...either by marriage, business
dealings, wills - deeds and etc. Of those connections, I have found nearly
ALL of the families to be of Welsh, English, Scottish and Irish or Scot/Irish
ancestry. Quite a few Childress's connect to the Welsh Vaughan/Vaughn's as
do my own. I also am a Webb descendant and they also have married into the
Childress family. I have seen my family of Ezell (French) who married
Childress who married Webbs and Vaughans and living in VA, NC and SC
together...a very tight knit group.
With that said.... I have read the comments and theories of other
researchers...Who say all the Childress's who arrived in America were of
Scottish heritage and came to America in 1745..This information from a
tombstone of Joel Childress. Most of you know that the top part of the
tombstone was used on a fireplace and no longer visable or a part of the
original tombstone. I would like to know when the tombstone (which may have
genealogical informaton engraved on it) was actually placed on the grave of
Joel Childress (1777-1819) Wouldn't you? As a CHILDRESS by birth, I would
like to have some answers from proof..and I have not seen any proof. To be
perfectly honest, I have seen no proof that the name of Childress or Childres
was spelt as such, to begin with.. I have seen book records (from reliable
authors) who say that the name was shown to be CHILDRES and CHILDRISS.
But...do we actually know the TRUE spelling of our name? I have a signature
of my ancestor who was born in 1785 VA...but I have NO signature of his
father nor his father and not likely to find one either!
I have re-read all of my issue's of "Childress Chatter". These older issue's
certainly discussed the tombstone. Thru letters presented by the editor...we
see that there were different opinions (from the Joel Childress descendants &
cousins) in relation to what the tombstone of Joel Childress actually said.
One said that he saw, Joel, son of John, son of John...Another cousin said,
Joel son of Joel son of Joel. And several other's who mixed the Joels and
Johns around. See what this says here?
We know from the 1789 Surry County NC Orphans Court records, that Joel's
father was Benjamin Childress. And in 1789 Joel Childress aged 12 was bound
out to Abraham Childress. I have read in the archives of Rootsweb...several
researchers referred to the Christian name of "Abraham" as a "CHILDERS" name.
Well...not this time. I have seen many Abraham's in the VA and NC records
who were Childres and Childress. That theory does not pan out for me.
Because of the Joel Childress tombstone...The issue here is...Do we...are do
we not consider records in Colonial VA to be ALL Childers...before 1745? We
know of the errors with the spelling of our surname...I have. Even with
original copies, I have seen many variant spellings. Even on one document.
The fact is, the Childers name is seen on Childress records (with proven
documents).
I am at an advantage in that I am related or descended from many of the same
families who married into the Joel Childress family...and down thru his sons
and grandchildren. The wife of Joel Childress and her parents...there is
record of them in my relatives book, "Early Settlers of Alabama" by Col James
Edmunds Saunders. Also (relative) Col William L. Saunders, NC Secretary of
State and his "Colonial Records of NC" which can be seen in most research
archives. From these books and other Childress histories...it is clear to
me...that the "tradition" of being a Childress and being Scottish came from
the families INTO which these Childress's married. In particuliar, Thompson,
Philips, Williams...and several other lines which link back to Joel Childress
family.
I am also related to the families of which John Childress of VA and Nashville
TN married. In particuliar the Maclins, Avents, Fosters, Robertsons, Watkins
and many others...
The families that married into the Joel Childress family had met prior to
Joel & Elizabeth's marriage...The families met in New Bern, Rowan, Surry, -
Mecklenburg Co, plus other counties in NC. The Thompsons from VA had also
settled in NC. The Whitsett/Whitsitt family were from Ireland and had
settled in NC and knew the Polks of whom Joel's daughter (Sarah) married.
The Polks were very early settlers in New Bern NC, but using their original
name of Pollock which stems from the Maxwell Clan in Scotland. The Pollock's
were Scottish as were their intermarried families of Knox, Alexander,
Biggers. As I previously said, the Whitsett family were Irish and the name,
said by Whitsett descendants was proved to be Whiteside. The Philip Philips
family were Welsh and Judge Philips daughter married John W. Childress, son
of Joel. John W also married another Phillips named Williams. Both from the
Welsh Philips who also settled in TN. All of the families who married into
the Philips were of Scot- Irish and English background...included would be
the Gilchrist family of a notable Scottish family...The list is almost
endless. The families who married into Joel Childress family of VA/NC and TN
were Scots - Irish and Welsh.
The Whitsetts of North Carolina were involved with the movers and shakers in
the political scene. One look at the NC records proves how powerful they all
were...most of them were related by marriage...thru generations. Elizabeth
Whitsett who married Joel Childress came from a family who were involved with
this group....her father was an officer with the Rowen NC political scene.
The Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence was said to have signers who were
ALL nearly related. The POLKS were one of the signers and they also were the
movers behind the declaration of 1775. Most all of this region in NC were of
Scot or Irish or Scot-Irish in ancestry...Included were the Polk family of
Biggers and Alexanders.
TO BE CON'T...
