Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I got a copy of the 1790 South Carolina census at a yard sale. It was
published in 1908 by the government and then my copy was printed in 1966
by Gen. Pub. Co. It has the index so I can look up names for any of you.

I just got an email from rootsweb concerning maintenance on their servers
this coming Friday and thought I'd pass it on to you all. I assume one will
not be able to send posts to the listing or get on the website during this
downtime.

Hello list
and Mary Jean:
Thank you for posting this information and the address. I went to the 1790
Henrico Co, Virginia Index. A name came to mind with reference to these
Childress's who lived and paid taxes in this county. What of Mitchell
Childress who stated on his RW pension that he was born in 1750 Henrico?
According to some of the posts here on Childress-Research-L it would appear
that Mitchell also lived in NC after he left VA. He then lived and died in
Knox Co, Tennessee. Seems he married several times, once to a Hannah Webb
and another to Hendrix. Maybe this index list will provide information on
who Mitchell Childress descends from. We all have to start somewhere and
this list has provided a good start. How many of you had Childress
ancestor's who lived in Henrico at one time, I would be interested in
knowing. Thanks again for posting the address and etc.

It has been said, that in original [copies] of records, surnames were often
mis-spelled. As a CHILDRESS, my name is to this day, often as not, been
mis-spelt. From experience, I believe that CHILDRESS or CHILDRIS and
CHILDRES would be harder for a court clerk or other scribe to spell rather
than CHILDERS. However, we should search and view copies of original records
in order to confirm IF those who came before us are indeed our ancestors.

TAX LIST INDEX. As researchers, we are told when we begin family research,
to always seek original sources. Tax lists which are on microfilm provide
those sources. The Court Clerks who wrote the names in the tax books were
hired by the COURTS to do a job - and to provide this information to the
COURT of HENRICO COUNTY, VA. The Court Clerks had a responsibility to the
COURT to be as accurate as possible and were held responsible for what they
reported.
ADDRESS: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~ysbinns/vataxlists/index-1790.htm
As researchers we can use various sources for proof, I personally like
original sources when available. We have all used 'book records", but we
know to follow that up with original copies of records when possible. The
1790 Tax records for Henrico Co, VA provides us with records of our ancestors
or those with our CHILDRESS - CHILDRES or CHILDREY name which appeared in
those original records from the Court of Henrico County, VA.
HENRICO COUNTY, VA was founded in 1634. How did the families who appear on
the 1790 Tax List get there? Were these people the descendants of earlier
settlers? Did those listed on the tax list arrive at a later date? Here are
some records that you will see and you can decide for yourself.

This is the master tax list for VA. This site is free and online. Address
is as follows:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~ysbinns/vataxlists/index-1790.htm
These records are from the original microfilmed source. You can view all of
these from the master index which will give you much information on the names
mentioned here. I have seen all of the tax lists and checked the spelling of
the names listed here from the original source.
What I found most interesting is that there are NO CHILDERS in the master
index list. The names vary from CHILDRES - CHILDRESS - and CHILDRETH and
CHILDREY. It has been said that there were no CHILDRESS's in America prior
to 1745 and also that ALL records created in the counties of VA prior to 1745
would be CHILDERS. The CHILDRES name was located in the Goochland County tax
records. The CHILDRESS name was in Henrico County, VA. The CHILDRETH [one]
in Henrico Co, VA and CHILDREY [one] also in Henrico Co, VA for 1790. There
is also a 1801 and 1802 Index list...I will post that next.
The CHILDRES and CHILDRESS christian names are in various wills for Henrico
Co, VA from the original copy [CFA WILL BOOK]. Also the CHILDREY family
christian names are also listed in a Henrico Co, VA WILL. Following this
index, I will list the wills which connect to the families in the master
index. As you know, there were not many wills which survived in VA.
The Henrico Co, VA CHILDRESS and CHILDREY's must lead back to WHO? Prior to
1790 there were many families in Henrico Co which was formed in 1634. It has
been said by some researchers that NO Childress in America stems from the
CHILDERS family. If there are no records of CHILDRESS in Henrico prior to
1745, then where did ALL these by the name of CHILDRESS and CHILDREY come
from? I believe the WILLS of Henrico Co will explain some of them. I have
also seen more of the CHILDRES/S spelling after the ARW then before it.
Leading me to believe that some of those with the surname spelling of
CHILDERS were actually CHILDRES/S to begin with. and possibly the scribe who
wrote the name was not familiar with the spelling...There are also three ship
records which attest to the name of CHILDRES and one CHILDREY who came to
America prior to 1745.

Joseph Childers d.1809 in Kanawha,VA. (then) W.VA. now. Joseph married
Mary Farris or Ferris. Mary was Baptized at the Dry Ridge Baptist Church
,Dry Ridge, Ky. in 1824. She passed away the second Saturday in May
1829. Josephs son, Reuben was his Executor of his Estate, 1809. There
is no known proof who his parents were, Marys true maiden name, or how
he is related to the other Childers from Va.who he lived with. His
family moved through out the U.S. with other Childers who are documented
as decedents ofAbraham Childers. After his death, Mary moved with other
Childers to Dry Ridge KY. where she and 6 other Childers were the
majority of the founding members of the Dry Ridge Baptist Church which
is still in existence. Then to Ind. Mo. IL. and to Mich.
