Do you know what happened to the grandpa during the Civil War? Did he
survive, was he wounded, was he a prisoner, where is he buried?
Since I'm sitting at home with nothing to do, given my right arm is in a cast
from 2 operations in the last 3 months to correct some nasty arthritis in my
wrist. I'm up grading and improving my Childers/Childress Civil War
information site, to provide more and better information. I can use all the
help I can get, to track down this info.
Drop me a line.
Be sure to include his name, regiment, and state.
Also I'm still seeking copies of letters, photos,(post-war photos are great
too!), all family stories you might have.

Petition of Martha CHILDRESS, 1827 Compiled by Paul W. Lemasters
Note: This petition can be found on the microfilm, "Legislative
Petitions," Roll 10, Petition No. 189-1827-1, 2, 3.
To the Generally Assemby of the State of Tennessee now in Session at
Nashville.
The petition of your petitioners Humby prayeth that your honourable
body would give to the Widow Martha CHILDRESS and her children they
being the Widow and Orphans of Thomas C. CHILDRESS lately deceased of
the County of Roane and State of Tennessee the quarter Section of land
which they are now in possession of and living on it being the South
West quarter of Section 15th in fractional township No. 1 range 2 East
in the High Wassee district and in the co of Roane an State of Tn the
reason that your petitioners makes this request of your Honourable
body is that Mrs. CHILDRESS is a fine industrious woman and being left
in a manner desolate of friends with a large family of small children
to raise and Mr. CHILDRESS in his life time have purchased the above
lot of land at a second sale gave nearly every thing he could
conveniently spare for it and being taken away from his family has
left them to the mercy of the world to shift for themselves we do
think it a deed of Charity for your Honourable body to make the Widow
and orphans of the said Thomas C. CHILDRESS a present of the balance
which is due to the state the land was sold at Two dollars per acre
Eight dollars of which has been paid to the treasurer of East Tn we
consider that it would Siad the Widow in raising of her children on
said place which would be a very considerable advantage to the state
Mr. CHILDRESS served a Campaign in the Creek War and was a very Good
soldier in doing of his duty so far as we have understood the only
horse that the family had laid down and died this summer in the Hight
of Crop time; your Honourable body your petitioners thinks Will be
doing of a Considerable deed of Charity in complying with your
petitioners Request and so doing your petitioners will be forever
bound to pray &c. Given under our hands this 9th day of September 1827
Roane County East Tennessee.

Tennessee required County Court Clerks to record births and deaths in

repealed. These births are from the loose papers.

GOODSPEED'S BIOGRAPHIES OF ROANE COUNTY, TENNESSEE 1886 PG 2 OF 3
Among pioneers of the town may be mentioned Thomas C. CHILDRESS,
Registers 1878-86. 1878-86; Thomas CHILDRESS, 1886 (deceased).
Since the civil war the town has been somewhat on the decline, but its
favorable location for iron furnaces and manufactories will
undoubtedly, in time, attract a much large population than it has ever
known. The present business interests of the town are represented by
the following firm:
CHILDRESS & MARTIN-GENERAL STORE
Among the lawyers who resided at Kingston previous to the war was
Samuel L. CHILDRESS: Judge CHILDRESS died at Kingston.

Abraham Childers, Abt. 1790 SC; died Unk. son of Thomas Childers.
md Margaret ?Madison Abt. 1810 SC ?. Margaret ?Madison, born Abt.
1790 SC?; died Unk.
Notes " The Virginia Genealogist"
In 1601 Childers name appears in Padiham Parish, England as Chylders
in St. Michael le Belfry Parish, Yorkshire.(Frank K. Hitching and S.
Hitching, Reference to English Surnames of the 1601and 1602). The
Christian names Abraham and Phillamon, which appears in Va 1600-50, do
not appear in either of these parish registers, however. (Francis
Collins, THe Registers of St.Michael le Belfry, York) In early
Henrico County records the name appears as Childers, Childres and
Childrs. One original deed made by
Abraham Childers III is preserved in the Archives Division of the
Virginia State Library; his signature is very clear and he used the
spelling Childers. Over the generations there was a
metamorphoisis in spelling, some of Abraham, Jr's descendants
finally using Childress and some of Phillemon's descendants using
Childrey.
The account which follows is based on records found in
Virginia. Other descendants after diligent research have come to other
conclusions. . In this article, when proof has not been
found and a conjecture is made, it will be so stated.
The Childers family in Henrico Co., Va., traces its roots to
Abrah Childers and his unnamed widow. Abrah does not appear on any
list of headrights nor did he take out a patent in his own name. The
data and place of his arrival in the new world is unk. A deed recorded
at a later date in Henrico County establishes his residence there by
1656. On 28 Feb 1656/7 William Harris of Curles sold for "one bill" to
Abrah Childers "the parcel of land he now lives on". No acreage was
mentioned but the land and his house was by the river on the lower
side of Morgan's landing and was bounded by the river,Morgan's, a
meadow, a swamp and Clarke's path. The witnessess were John Epes and
Thomas Liggon. Ab Childres made a T' mark when he signed the
memorandum dated 2 March 1565/7 agreeing that Ja. Robison could "enjoy
his part of the lease."(Henrico Co. Va Record Bk 1677-92 pp199-200)
No doubt the re-recording of this deed was necessary to make the
following transaction legal. On 20 Nov 168? Abraham Childres Jr.
exchanged land with John Pleasants. He was to receive 548 acres on
Four Mile Creek and 900 pounds of tobacco from Pleasants and in turn
conveyed to him 140 acres "being the whole dividend which was
purchased by my father Abrah Childers of Major William Harris" and
"given unto me as of his will". Abraham's part of this "to be
surrendered to hime now and the remained after my Mother's decease."
The witnesses were Robert Sharpe and Rboert Evans and the deed was
recorded 10 Feb 1680/81.
On Sept 20 1680 John Pleasants and John Huddleson assigned to
Abrah Childers their title and interest in a patent for "548 acres 3
roades and twenty poles of lands on the north side of James rivers, on
the main brook of Four Mile Creek, bounded by Capt. Mathew, which had
been granted them by Governor Sir Henry Chicheley on 1 Oct 1679.
Robert Sharpe and Robert Evans also witnessed this deed. On 15 Oct
1681 Abraham Childres
acknowledged receiving the land from Pleasants and Huddlesoe
and for 3000 pounds of tobacco he assigned the land over to John
Pleasants; Will Ballow and Richard Ward witnessed the
assignment. On Dec 1681 Anne Childres relinquished her right of
dower. And on 1 Feb 1681/2 Abraham Childres, "sonne and heire
of Pleasants 10,000 pounds of tobacco, sold 90 acres of the land
his father purchased from Major Willliam Harris, the witnesses
being John and Thomas Huddlesoe. He signed as Abraham Childres. His
mother must have been still alive since this was two-thirds of the 140
acres. The known children of Abrah Childers and his wife were:
+I. Abraham, married Ann Pew.
+II.Phillemon, married Mary _________.
I. Abraham Childers, Jrs. was born in 1655, a year before his
father's 1656 purchase, in the colony of Virginia. He received
some education since he always signed his name. Several
depositions confirm the year of his birth. The first, made 2 Dec
1678 at the age of 23, stated he had been appointed by both
parties to start horses for a race and they were fairly stated. He
signed as Abraham Childres. On 10 Feb 1680/1 at the age of 25 he
deposed that about three weeks before Christmas Edward Mathews had of
him 100 pounds of tobacco or thereabout and it was to fill a hogshed.
He signed as Childers. On 23 March 1685/6 Abraham Childers, aged 30,
stated that last night at John Pledge's home he saw "hung up in the
said John Pledge's chimmey" 8 or 9 pieces of Pork" and that they were
not there a day or two before, that they were barrow pork, and that
last Aug he saw in Debry's corn field 8 or 9 barrow and sows when
Henry Pew said they were John Pledge's and John Cannon's. This
deposition was signed Abraham Childrs.
On 2 June 1679 depositions were taken from several persons
concerning the burned buildings on Capt. Byrd's plantation. The
Saturday before Easter several person's were picking up nails, of who
Abraham Childres alone was named. The question was did they belong to
Captain Byrd or were they free?
Also in 1679 forth tithables were ordered by the court to "fit out
men, horses and armor." Abraham Childres appears on the Curles list
with two tithables. At the April 1683 Court Abraham Childers were
impaneled for the first time on the Grand Jury. After that he served
many times until his death.
Notes for Margaret ?Madison: This last name is not proven. It is
speculation because of her daughter's middle name only. About Abraham

King of the Salian Franks 456-481
CHILDERIC succeeded his semi-legendary father Merovech as king
of the Salian Franks of northern Gaul in 456, during Roman times. He
became infatuated with the daughters of his subjects, who were so
incensed about this that they forced him to give up the throne. He
discovered that they intended to assassinate him, and he fled to
Thuringia, leaving a close friend and telling him to send him a
message when CHILDERIC could return to his kingdom.
CHILDERIC took refuge with Bisinus, King of the Thuringian Franks, and
his wife Basina. The king elected by the Franks was cruel, and soon
after CHILDERIC was re-called to his kingdom by his friend, and was
restored to the throne. Once Bisinus and CHILDERIC were both kings,
Basina deserted her husband and went to live with CHILDERIC, who
married her and had a son Clovis. After a battle with Odoacer, King
of the Saxons (and conquerer of the Western Roman Empire, 476), at
Orleans, CHILDERIC and the Saxon king made a peace treaty and together
subdued the Alamanni, who had invaded a part of Italy. In 481
CHILDERIC died and was succeeded by Clovis, his son by Basina.
