Ref: Kay's post ref PROOF - JOEL & BENJAMIN CHILDRESS:
In my previous post were the comments of Garland CHILDRESS, Notes on
CHILDRESS, William Cabler Moore, 1967. Joel CHILDRESS tombstone. Letters
ref: CHILDRESS descendants. Childress-L owners Intro letter ref tombstone of
JOEL CHILDRESS born 1777 d.1819 TN.
Posted July 15, 2000, Childress-L by Lee RAU the following information:
"Previously I have posted two abstracts of orders entered in what appears to
have been a proceeding in the Orphan's court for SURRY CO, NC concerning JOEL
CHILDRESS, who was the father of first lady Sarah CHILDRESS POLK. I have
found an abstract of yet another order, which is dated May 13, 1789, reads:
Ordered JOEL CHILDRESS, ORPHAN of BENJAMIN CHILDRESS, deceased, bound to
STEPHEN CHILDRESS until 3 March 1798 when he arrives at 21 years of age to
learn Art and Mistry of House Carpenter and Joiner, said STEPHEN agrees to
give him tools and clothes to his freedom. I read this order as placing JOEL
in STEPHEN CHILDRESS custody as an indentured apprentice. Apparently someone
had misgivings about this arrangement as three days later another order was
entered providing that JOEL should remain in possession of ABRAHAM CHILDRESS
until next Court" End
NOTE: There is a great deal covered in LEE RAU's post. I would invite you
to view his post as it explains the two CHILDRESS who are involved with the
orphan JOEL CHILDRESS, STEPHEN and ABRAHAM CHILDRESS. I understand that Lee
RAU will have a conclusion to the NC Orphan Court records in the near future.
Thank you Lee for these excellent records. I look forward to your
conclusions.
From what I personally have seen here, it is not only suggested, but has been
proven, that JOEL CHILDRESS was not the son of a JOHN CHILDRESS, but the son
of deceased BENJAMIN CHILDRESS who had died by 1789. The orphans court
records in NC prove beyond a shadow of doubt. The same birthdate in those NC
orphan court records is the exact birthdate for JOEL CHILDRESS, father of
Sarah CHILDRESS Polk, wife and first lady of James Knox POLK, President of
the United States.
The tombstone of JOEL CHILDRESS and what was actually engraved is in serious
doubt. By their own admission these descendants whose letters were included
in the articles by Mr. William Cabler Moore, 1967, various memories were
voiced. No one seemed to be in tune with each other. Their recollections
were not the same. No mention of a 'ship from Wales in 1745" was ever
mentioned in these letters. This is not something new. Family traditions
either oral or written become dimmed with time. Items added and taken away
are common. I would hope that all serious researchers will strive to
separate fact from fiction as I have tried to do. Ship records have not
revealed our CHILDRESS family and their arrival to America. Various
Immigrants ( list), have provided CHILDRES arrivals. We should not dismiss
those in light of the orphans court records of JOEL CHILDRESS. Joel's
ancestry now seems to be attainable. Any further information you can provide
would be appreciated by this lister.

Hello List Members
Ref: Kay's 9-30-2000 Post, JOEL & BENJAMIN CHILDRESS
According to the last part of Kay's post of Sept 30, 2000, she requests
information reference: "As of yet there is no proof that John CHILDRESS was
or was not JOEL CHILDRESS father"
I have checked my father's files plus materials I have researched. I have
also received information from a Childress-Research-L member. Also included
will be posts from the Childress-L which bear proof of the ancestry of JOEL
CHILDRESS who was born in VA and who was father of Sarah CHILDRESS who
married Pres. James Knox POLK. And some rather interesting and insightful
observations from Childress researchers whose work has appeared in various
publications & archives.
SOURCE: "Childers/Childress Family Association Newsletter", Issue No. 31,
January 1996: Pages 4-12 as follows: "JOHN CHILDRESS", by Garland CHILDRESS:
Page 5: (Comments)
""According to the SAR Application of John C. BROWN, a Nashville Attorney
1930's, JOHN CHILDRESS and his wife, Martha CALHOUN were the parents of JOEL
CHILDRESS of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Yes, JOHN could have been the father
of JOEL, b.1777, d.1819. However, unless JOHN and MARTHA had him seven years
before they were married, ca1784/85, the approximate time JOHN left middle
Tennessee for South Carolina where he states; "I married MARTHA CALHOUN,
daughter of THOMAS". By these words we can surmise, MARTHA was not the
mother of JOEL CHILDRESS!"
"With the above dissertation I shall close the remarks, leaving you, the
reader, with the question: Where do I go from here? And WHICH JOHN
CHILDRESS, on September 22, 1783 married MARY GREEN in Lincoln County, KY
which was at that time a very big country. Garland K. CHILDRESS"

and Cabler Families"
"SECTION !V. REFERENCES, NOTES and DISCUSSIONS":
NOTE: This was in relation to a letter and conversation in which Mr. Cabler
had with Mr. A.Lion CHILDRESS or Nashville and several other Childress
descendants:
Page 31/32: ** "M-5, page 110 at seq. Mr. CHILDRESS stated that it was his
recollection that the TOMBSTONE of JOEL CHILDRESS, Mrs. POLK's (Sarah
CHILDRESS POLK) father bore inscription "JOEL the son of JOEL the son of JOEL
who emigrated from Wales in the year---------." Still another person traced
JOEL's parantage back to the same Abram CHILDERS from whom George Campbell
CHILDRESS and this writer are descended. This Mrs. HATCHER of Chattanooga
wrote Mr. A.L. CHILDRESS that the immigrant Abraham CHILDERS was born in
England about 1630 and arrived in America about 1649. She thought JOHN
CHILDRESS born about 1730 who married RACHEL PERKINS might have been JOEL's
grandfather but this JOHN was not married until 1757 and no JOEL is included
in his list of children, and his son JOHN would have been too young to have
been the father of JOEL's brother JAMES." *
*JAMES CHILDRESS: Page 16, same source above: "Executor of the estate of
JOEL CHILDRESS deceased gave a power of attorney to JAMES CHILDRESS of
Tuscaloosa to transact business relative to his father's estate. (Tuscaloosa
County Deed Book E, page 289)., Earlier, the WILL of DAVID CHILDRESS probated
in Madison CO, AL (Probate Record 2, page 158, February 2, 1820) mention's
DAVID's brother JAMES CHILDRESS. James CHILDRESS's WILL, made Sept 30, 1833
was probated in Tuscaloosa County, AL Feb. 1836 (Tuscaloosa Co, AL WILL BK 1,

**NOTES: Reference the TOMBSTONE of JOEL CHILDRESS in TN:
According to the Childress-L owner, the tombstone of JOEL CHILDRESS who was
born March 22, 1777 and died 1819. "Was laid to rest in a meadow. His
tombstone was reported to be 10 feet high, with the inscription, JOEL
CHILDRESS, son of JOHN, son of JOEL who came to America 1745 from WALES in
his OWN SHIP". According to this post by the Childress-L owner, the
tombstone was later used as a fireplace hearth and no longer is on the grave
of JOEL CHILDRESS. This grave has been moved to a historic town in TN,
however, the original tombstone was not included. No one living has actually
seen this tombstone of JOEL CHILDRESS. The memoirs of JOEL CHILDRESS (stated
above) were written by a man who says he saw the tombstone as a small child,
his memoirs were written as a elderly man, about 37 years after the fact.
SOURCE: LETTER: To: Mr. M. CHILDRESS, Iowa, May 17, 1930:
"Dear Doctor: etc, etc, The oldest authenic record I have is of my great
grandfather who came to Middle TN from near Salem NC, finally settling near
Murfreesboro, TN and I recall as a child climbing upon his tombstone, Joel
Childress, born 1777 died 1819, the son of JOHN the son of JOEL the son of
JOEL, I have no authenic record of those two preceding JOELS, nor names,
(since this was written I have learned of a brother , JAMES CHILDRESS who
lived in AL born 1773 died 1836). etc, etc. A.L. CHILDRESS" (SEE NOTE)
NOTE: If you will note, there is no mention of "Joel, son of JOHN son of
JOEL" nor any mention of a SHIP which came to America from WALES in 1745. In
fact of the letters I have read from the various descendants of this line, no
mention has ever been made of Joel CHILDRESS tombstone with the inscription
stating the 1745 arrival from WALES. There were CHILDRESS memoirs mentioned
by the Childress-L owner, of whom it would appear to be of this same family.
I find it very odd that this publication would state a "major find" and in
all of these letters not one mention is made of that data. I will continue
this line of information in my next post.

Childress is an English name. There were many variations in the spelling
of the name:Childres, Childrey, Childers, even abbreviations to Childs
or Chiles. It is an ancient Anglo- Saxon name which probably originated
in the old Germanic language from which English itself evolved. The
first hint of the name was in the Frankish name Childric I, leader of a
Germanic tribe of Franks (old Germanic inhabitants of France) from 436
to 481 A.D. The old Germanic meaning of the name was "Battle Ruler."
The first definite record of the name in England was Isabel de
Childers, which appeared in the Close Rolls of County York during the
reign of King Henry III(1216-1272). Thus the name originated in England.
But, some of the Childress family went to Ireland along with many other
Eng. families. And indeed, one of the Childress family was once
President of the Republic of Ireland. It is certainly probable that
some Childress families in America descend from the Eng families, and
some undoubtedly descend from the Irish families. But they all have a
common ancestor back in the earliest English times-descended from those

land of John Connor, Robert Childress & Lindsay Childress of Knox County
and is est to contain 453 [acres] it being the same place on which said

tract of land is not susceptible of a division amongst said heirs [and]
that to divide it would lessen its value & in fact ruin the farm; that
it is impossible to give spring water to ____ and your
Orators are perfectly satisfied that in order to [make] an equal
division among the several heirs it will be necessary to sell said
tract of land and your Orators believe that all of said heirs are

HENRY CHILDERS and MARY FARMER WILLIAM BUTLER,.CAPT.: William Butler b
abt 1740 married Phoebe Childers or Childress b abt 1752 & she died
after 1825 in Simpson, Co., Ky. The family went from Orange Co., N.C. to
Rowan Co., N.C. then to Iredell Co., N.C. before going to Edgefield,SC.
After being pardoned for his activity with the Regulators, he was given
a grant of land in Edgefield County, South Carolina where he died in
1790. His widow, and children, eventually moved on to Tennessee & Ky.
Phebe was buried in the Lowe burial ground in Simpson Co., Kentucky.
Iredel County, South Carolina, Deed BK 17, pg 182-184 Wm Floren, Prince
Edward County, VA, Virginia and Phebe Childress to William Butler.
Deposition by Wm Floren before magistrate Richard Bibb, Prince Edward
County: about thirty yars of age he remembers that he saw joined in
martimony Wm Butler and Phebe Childress by Parson Gardner of Prince
Edward County, VA. Prince Edward Couty, VA, 22 Sept 1794, before
magistrate Richard Bibb: Ann Childress made oath: about thirty years ago
her daughter Phebe Childress and Wm Butler set off from her house to go
to parson Gardner to be married and they returned and lived together as
man & wife for a number of years in this part of the county. Francis
Watkins, clerk of Prince Edward Couty, VA certifies that Richard Bibb
who signed within the affidavits was qualified and acting Justice of the
Peace for sd county afsd, 14 Oct 1798. Thomas Scott presiding Justice/
Peace, Prince Edward County, certifies on 1 Nov 1798 that Francis
Watkins was on the date thereof and on the day of within certificate
Clerk of the Court of Prince Edward County. Rec 1 July 1799.
"William Butler of Orange County, North Carolina was one of the most
active leaders of the regulators. he was apparently of a violent
temperament and quite outspoken. In September 1768 he was found guilty
of 'Rout (riot), Assault etc.,' fined 50 Lbs. and sentenced to 6 months
imprisonment. In September 1770 he was one of the mob that assaulted the
attorneys at the courthouse in Hillsborough and attempted to strike
Judge Richard Henderson. The following March he was listed among those
who were 'still continuing their riotous meetings and severaly
threatening the Judges, Lawyers, and other officers of the Court.' After
the Battle of Alamance a reward of 1,000 acres of land and $100 was
offered for the capture of Butler and three other Regulators. Declared
an outlaw in June 1771, he was also one of the three men cited by name
not to be pardoned. After the departure of Goernor Tryon for New York,
Butler petioned Governor Josiah Martin his council for forgiveness. He
was, he said, 'full convinced that the principles which (the regulators)
had esposed were erroneous and therefore most sincerely promise to
never engage in the like again.' His brother, John Butler, also entered
a plea on his behalf, and it may have been effective. William served in
the Revoluntionary Army, and may have been a member of the Continental
Line. His brother, John, apparently not a Regulator, became a Brigadier
General of the North Carolina militia."
William Butler gained fame as the leader of the North CarolinaRegulators
in Orange County, who protested "dishonest sheriffs, excessive taxes,
and extortionate fees." William was among the Regulators that were
arrested, freed by outraged citizens, convicted, declared to be outlaws,
hunted, fomentors of a riot, and repelled at the Battle of Alamance in
May 1771. Britain branded William and the Regulators criminals, but local
citizens and later historians called them patriots, much like the Sons
of Liberty in Massachusetts. When the War for Independence broke out
William and John, his brother, fought against the Crown. The above
paragraph's information came from Powell et al., Regulators in North
Carolina History, XV-XXI, pg 557-78.

Phebe Childres wife of William the Regulator. Information on them was
recorded in the diary of John Lowe Butler, grandson of William the
regulator. The children were verified from John Lowe Butler's diary.
(Research notes from Jean Schneider below): Affidavit: Edward
Kirkpatrick, Bailey Butler and John Kirkpatrick state that they were
personally acquainted with James Butler and Fanny Butler in the State of
Tennessee, who lived together as husband and wife for over 40 years.
Fanny was a widow at the time she made application for Bounty Land under
the Act of Mar 8, 1855. (ref).
PHEBIA CHILDERS OR CHILDRESS: 1794-1795 North Carolina: November 10,
1794: According to Jean Schneider, there is a note signed by Samuel
Butler and his mother, Feeby Butler, for tallow dated November 10, 1794,
"Iredell County, North Carolina", to be paid in corn by the 10th of
November 1795 to James Maiden (this James Maiden would later testify to
the marriage of William and Phoebe Butler). This is signed by his mark
and also by Feeby. (Was he home alone, caring for his mother and the
farm at the same time?)
1815: According to letter, she left North Carolina about 1815. Here is a
copy of a letter written by Phoebe to her son William in North Carolina:
Simpson County (Ky) May 10th 1825
Dear Son, son and daughter I am in good healthat present Wm Plumers
family and all our family conescions (connections?) are well at this
time. as far as we know a great many people have died here this season,
me and my people are so many living monuments of the divine goodness and
we have great reason to thank that god who is willing to be Lord the
preserver of man for his goodness. I long to see you both and I desire
very much to have a chance to talk with you both. I may never have an
opportunity to see you in this time world. If not my earnest prayer is
that we may have a happy meeting hereafter. I am now well stricken in
years and may say with the ancient patriarch that few and evil have been
the days of the life of my pilgrimage. When I left you about 10 years
ago you said that you would come and see me but you have not done so, I
think hard of it, be sure to come or write as soon as possible, come
this fall if you can. There is a grat prospect of fruit this year, wheat
looks well. Remember me to all of your family and all inquireing
friends. You feel near to me altho we are distant. at this time I am
your Mother (on the second page is a second paragraph: It appears that
you have forgot a tender parent. If you love me with fraternal affection
I wish you to prove your faith by your works, for faith without works is
dead being alone. I trust you will make paments for being remiss. My
dear son I am with great consideration your very affectioante mother.
Signed Phebe Butler
This letter was sent to William Butler, Iredell county, To Hustonsville
Post office near Hunting Creek N Carolina posted on May 1825, Franklin,
Ky.
Jean Schneider furnished me additional information. She said that Phoebe
died on a Wednesday about 2:30 A.M. at the home of her son, James but
she didn't know when she went to Kentucky to live.
Phoebe's brother, John, had a grandson named George Campbell Childress,
and this article about him, " A 32 year old lawyer and editor originally
from Tennessee, is known as the author of the Texas Declaration of
Independence. Considered by many to be the finest leagal mind at the
convention, he supposedly had a draft of the Declaration in his
saddlebags when he arrived in Washington On the morning of March 2,
1836, Childress read the Declaration to the men assembled in Washington.
The group adopted the document without amendment withi an hour an half.
Then a slight snag developed, the hastily written document was found to
be riddled with grammatical errors; it was decided that five new
handwritten copies needed to be produced. Consequently, the originals of
the Declaration were actually signed the following day, March 3, by the
52 members present. The remaining seven delegates added their signatures
as they arrived.
The Texas Declaration of Independence was loosely patterned after that
of the United States. The document contains statements on the
responsibility of the governement followed by a long list of grievances
that included denial of freedom to worship and the oppressive tyranny of
military commandants stationed in the colony. Finally, it concluded by
declaring Texas a"...free, Sovereign, and independent Republic."
Childress, George Campbell 1804-1841, born January 8, 1804. Signer,
Texas Declaration of Independence, 1836; delegate to Texas Republic
constitutional convention, 1836. Committed suicide at Galvaston, Texas,
October 6, 1841. Interment at Episcopal Cemetery, Galvaston, Texas.
Childress County, Texas is named for him. George's uncle, Stewart C.
Robertson, was VERY influential in Texas and promoted the emigration of
around 600 people to Texas. Robertson was also a signer of the Texas
Declaration of Independence and held several offices in Texas. Jean
Schneider's thought was that a number of Childress families may have
moved from Tennessee to Texas atthis time.

regarding a Daniel P. Butler, b abt 1806/1808 who married Amelia
Childers b 1805 in South Carolina, married in 1831(possiblly in Newberry
or Edgefield Co., SC. The letter also states that "a" Francis Childers

Hi List:
Reference the CHILDRESS surname and the "SS".
There seems to be some debate reference our name and the way it was presented
in court - Bible - census and etc. records...according to a list owner of
another list.
While I made reference to the different way our name was written in a prior
post, I will now post a interesting article which appeared in
"Childers-Childress Family Association Newsletter", ISSUE 8, PAGE 5 by
Frances CURRY. Frances is a long standing member of the CFA and her research
is highly respected. Here is the article Frances CURRY wrote in respect to
our name of CHILDRESS.
"Frances CURRY------1428 S. Roanoke, Springfiled, MO 65807"
"CHILDRESS ---CHILDREY"
"About forty years ago when I began reading census microfilm, I was puzzled
about the way I found the ss written in the CHILDRESS surname and a very
knowledgeable librarian explained that was the way the double "s" was written
in early writing. I believe she said this was the Old English style of
writing.
Ofcourse printing presses and typewriters did not have this style of ss and
used the letter "y" as a substitute when copying handwritten material as it
resembled the "y" more than other keyboard character especially, when it was
written with a small or short loop above the line.
If anyone doubts that the character referred to was used for the double s,
all they have to do is refer to the same character used in spelling Tennessee
or Missouri by many (not all) census takers in the 1830 or 1840 census. No
one will suggest that Tennessee was spelled Tenneyee or Missouri, Miyouri.
I have made copies of some examples of CHILDRESS as was written in the 1830
Federal census of Williamson County, TN, Page 163, Page 193, line 3 and page
227, line 3. Note how the same enumerator wrote Tennessee at the top of the
page. I rest my case!" End.
NOTE: I cannot show you these names, but I can tell you. They were Nelson
Childrefs, Paul Childrefs and Alexander M. Childreys. The last name looks
exactly like a "y". These being in the actual script, not typed. The last
part of this article has the actual script as: Western District (or
Territory) of Tennefsee.
Not all of those who wrote our name were prolific in the art of handwriting.
Even the learned sometimes wrote in a careless manner. Under whatever
conditions, we are happy to have any records at all. As for the name of
"CHILDREY", why yes, It most certainly is a fine surname, but because of
the closeness in spelling to the surname of CHILDRES or CHILDRESS, when
written as "Childrefs" it obviously hindered those who abstract records.
Even those with the surname of "CHILDREY" would have difficultly in reading
poor script written by a clerk! I believe Frances Curry's observations said
it best, "I rest my case."

Hi List,
SInce I posted the BIBLE records of William CHILDRESS Sr and Jr., I have
received requests for more information reference the father of William
CHILDRESS Sr. This is from the Estate of Benedict CHILDRESS, grandson of
Jeremiah CHILDRESS Sr and Martha McCOWAN CHILDRESS. Typed exactly as written
from the Court records of Charlotte Co, VA from which I have photo-copies
as follows:

Test Thomas Read CC
NOTES: This Clerk, Thomas Read, script is often misread in that his "O"
appears as an "A". His numering was probably correct for the time frame, but
hard for this reader to tell if his "6" was actually that or a "5". His "Y"
appears as a slanted "Y", but there is not doubt as to his script when writng
the names of BENEDICT and widow JANE, which was clearly, "Childrefs" which
would be CHILDRESS.
I plan to post other Charlotte County Court records for this CHILDRESS family
of which I am a direct descendant as is Mrs. Dorothy Harkins and Mrs. Mary
Ann Willis. There are many descendants of this line. Mrs. Frances Curry
descendant of Jesse CHILDRESS, son of William CHILDRESS Sr. kindly sent to
me, these Estate papers of Benedict CHILDRESS, father of William & Jesse
CHILDRESS.
The widow named JANE Childrefs married as her 2nd husband, Thomas HAMBLIN Sr.
further information will follow reference this family. If you have any
further questions please feel free to contact me or post to
Childress-Research-L. Thanks!

The pages from this Bible are ornate in design, named "FAMILY RECORD".
The handsome script is beautifully fluid and in keeping with the time it was
posted. I will type exactly as it was written. Also I will add notes for
further
information. I thank my cousins for this opportunity to share with the list,
something treasured by our CHILDRESS family.

NOTES:
1. All of the pages look exactly the same in design.
2. The script is clearly of a older ancestor in this family.
As noted the name of CHILDRESS is written as it normally
would be for the time as Childrefs. The ss always looked
this way when writing a name which had two ss's at the end
of the name thus the first 's' would be like a ' f ' or a long 'y'.
3. The script on the first page, changes with the death of
one family member. Henry Hester.
4. Script on second page, script for the deaths has two
or possible three different scripts which is normal.
Except for the 'Births" which is the same script or same
handwriting.
5. Script for the third page is the same for the Births.
Handwriting for the deaths is of good hand, but is
different. Added death is for James E. Childrefs or
Childress, died 18th April 1947 at home in Princeton,
Ky (furnished by Dorothy Harkins)
NOTES for: William CHILDRESS Sr., he was born in VA. He appears in the
1820 Mecklenburg Co, VA census for 1820 with wife and five children. Next
door was his mother, Jane HAMBLIN, widow of Benedict CHILDRESS who had
died by 1794 Inventory, Charlotte Co, VA. 1830 Mecklenburg Co, VA census
shows William and wife plus nine children. By the 1840 Census, William and
family are in Caldwell Co, KY. William CHILDRESS Sr. was a soldier in the
War of 1812 out of VA and was pensioned in Caldwell CO, KY. We have his
War of 1812 Bounty Land Form where he signed his name with beautiful
penmanship as: "William CHILDRESS".
6. Script on the forth page for marriages of William Childrefs
and Ameley Hester and Charlie Childress is similiar, but
not the same which is normal in families. But the script
changes for the other births and deaths, probably the son
or grandsons or daughters handwriting.
If you have further questions concerning the CHILDRESS Family Bible, we will
be glad to answer your questions. Dorothy, Mary Ann and I are direct
descendants of William CHILDRESS Sr. who was son of Benedict and Jane
CHILDRESS. William Sr. married Nancy, we believe her maiden name to be
Hanks or Wilkerson. If William Sr. married twice it is not known at this time.

REF: CHILDRESS family and their connections (Continues).....
The Calhoun name has surfaced once again in the Childress tree. From the
family of Mrs. Geneve CHILDRESS Stephenson (CRS # C-5) and Lee & Jan Rau. I
know there are many descendants of this Childress ancestry whose connections
to CALHOUN will be shown in this information. If you have information to
share, we would enjoy reading it!
CHILDRESS and CALHOUN:
"Mary Elizabeth CALHOUN, daughter of William CALHOUN b April 5, 1768 and
Rebecca TANNYHILL, first cousin once removed of JOHN CALDWELL CALHOUN, Vice
President of the United States, married Nathan MASSEY, Jr. b1788. The
marriage of Mary Elizabeth CALHOUN and Nathan MASSEY Jr. probably occurred in
Laurens County, South Carolina. Nathan MASSEY's father was from Wake County
NC, where Nathan Jr. was born, after which the family moved to Laurens
County, SC where the CALHOUNS lived. Nathan Jr's father, Nathan Sr., later
moved to Walker County, GA at the time the Cherokee Indians were removed to
Oklahoma (1838), along with the CHILDRESS'es and other inter-related
families. Nathan Jr. and wife Mary migrated to Copiah County, Mississippi.
The following is the ancestry of this line."

1830. Richard died 15 Nov 1830 in Laurens CO, SC at age 66. Martha WOODS
was born NC 1 May 1771.
Two of the children of Richard Alexander CHILDRESS Sr and Martha WOODS
CHILDRESS married MASSEY'S who connect to the CALHOUNS, and a generation
3 (grandparents of Geneve CHILDRESS Stephenson) Martha Caroline MASSEY
married Robert Washington CHILDRESS. As follows:
RICHARD ALEXANDER CHILDRESS, Jr, His body was interred in CHILDRESS-BAILEY
Cemetery Pond Springs, Walker Co, GA. Richard was born in Laurens Co, SC 6

in the "History of Mecklenburg Co NC" P. 315-318
"George CALHOUN, DEED, Mecklengburg County, NC, January 12, 1775. George
CALHOUN and ELZABETH, his wife, to their son, Samuel CALHOUN, for a
consideration of 100 lbs; a tract of land on the EAST side of Catawba River,
joining Samuel KNOX and John HENDRY's land, beginning at John Bigger's line,
thence to Charles CALHOUN's CORNER, which was patented by Samuel KNOX, and
containing 180 acres. Signed by GEORGE CALHOUN and ELIZABETH CALHOUN and
witnessed by Ann Brown and William Kerr."
"The above land was on the NORTHSide of the CATAWBA, but was on the "bend"
near CARR's (Kerr's) Creek and in this instance was called "EAST" as it
actually was EAST at that particular point. This GEORGE CALHOUN was from
Prince Edward County, Virginia and so was JOHN BIGGERS, a descendant of ADAM
CALHOUN, relative of the ARMSTRONGS who lived on the other side of the
CATAWBA from this land." Note: Typed as written.mjcv
NOTES: The above recorded records was in relation to those families who
lived in Mecklenburg Co, North Carolina. Many of those early settlers of
this place married into the CHILDRESS family. As noted above, ARMSTRONG,
CALHOUN, KNOX.
These families who married CHILDRESS were involved in the Mecklenburg
Declaration of Independence (1775) and what led up to that declaration. The
lists of those who signed it and the discussions and discrepancies of those
lists. I plan to post those lists and the information which was included
which bears note due to the family names who married the CHILDRESS families
of VA-NC-SC-TN and those who migrated further west.

John Childress married Martha Calhoun and had John Childress in 1790
in Laurens County SC. John Sr applied for his pension in Rutherford

so I assume he died there around 1833.
Somewhere in this line also is a Richard Childress who moved with John
Childress Jr to Walker County Ga but I do not know if he was a brother
or a
cousin. The daughter of John Childress Jr, Nancy is from who I descend.

DEATH OF A. N. CHILDRESS
"Died at the home of his daughter Mrs. T. W. Harrison, Tuesday, October
11th, at Ingleside, Mr. A. N. Childress. The deceased lived in Sunflower
County, and was on his way home from Owens Wells when he was taken sick
and died. For a number of years he was a resident of this county, and
was known far and near as being an upright and honorable citizen. To his
many friends he was true and to his wife and children he was exceedingly
kind. To his bereaved wife and daughters we extend sincere condolence.
------------Greenwood Enterprise.
This piece of sad news will come as a shock to Mr. Childress's many
Richland Parish friends. He lived here for many years and was always
regarded just as he was when he died, "an upright and honorable citizen"
The deceased has still a daughter living here, Mrs. W. T. Cook, and to
her to other members of the family we extend sympathy and consolation."

the Presbyterian church.
He came to this state in 1890 from Tuscaloosa, Ala., and located on the
Oakwood Plantation near Roebuck. He was twice married and leaves two
daughters by his first marriage, Mrs. T. W. Harrison of Ingleside, and
Mrs. W. T. Cook, of Rayville, La., one daughter, Maggie by his last
marriage, who with his devoted wife is left to mourn his loss, and who
have our deepest sympathy. He met death as an old soldier, bravely and
uncomplainingly, his last words were loving messages to his wife,
children and friends.
All that was mortal of this generous, kindly, brave man was laid to rest
in the Greenbriar cemetery at Itta Bena in the presence of his sorrowing
family and two comrades who wore the gray.
The representatives of the chivalrous old south are rapidly passing
away. They are hastening to that home above and do not fear to go. And

This is in response to your question ref the post I left (Robert Childress)
and his family. I will check and see if I have any other records for the
Sarah you asked about and also Frances. Thanks for the post!
MaryJean (Childress Voegtlin)
Hi List
I plan to post information which may be of your ancestry. It has been said
by some Childress researchers that the surname of "CHILDRESS" is Scottish.
Some (long time) researchers whose work has been published, claim that
"CHILDRESS" is of English origin. As a researcher who was born with the name
"CHILDRESS" I am working hard to trace the origin & migration of our name and
I am sure that you are as well.
It is my opinion that in order to trace our CHILDRESS families, we must
research the families that were part of those branches. The family names of
those in different areas of early America and Europe.
We know that our CHILDRESS families came from Virginia. Some of those
branches moved into North Carolina when it was first settled. According to
various sources (which I will list during these posts) the families who had
business dealings, marriages and etc, it would appear that they were the
earliest settlers in North Carolina. The same can be said for Virginia. The
CHILDRESS branch who settled in North Carolina (after leaving parts of VA)
sometimes migrated to Tennessee, even tho parts of North Carolina became
Tennesssee in 1796c. And the migration into South Carolina and further west.
If you have any information to add, please do so. I look forward to this
project and will enjoy sharing the information I have discovered.
Information I plan to post is not my opinion, unless I say so! There will
be 'opinions' in some of the data derived from published sources, while
other information will be from Bible records, legal documents, census
records, wills, and state records. I also will add records from sources in
Europe.
The CHILDRESS connection of CALHOUN:
The Calhoun name is a surname of Scottish origin. Like you, I have seen this
surname within the CHILDRESS family. Also as a Christian name. John
CHILDRESS who was born 1755 VA settled in Sevier and Rutherford Co's in TN
around 1826. If John CHILDRESS had been married before, it is not known.
But according to his ARW Pension he was then married, (he said) to Martha
*CALHOUN daughter of Thomas CALHOUN of South Carolina.

Gaelic Name: Mac a' Chombaich."
"This clan takes its name from the lands of Colquhoun in the county of
Dunbarton. These lands were granted to Humphrey of Kilpatrick by Malcolm,
Earl of Lennox, in the time of Alexander II. Sur Robert Kilpatrick, of
Colquhoun, married the daughter of the laird of Luss, and since then the
chief has been described as of Colquhoun and Luss.

The Scottish surname of "Calhoun" and variants were connected to our

her father and GIVENS above in this post)
NOTES: It appears that ROBERT U. CHILDRESS of whose name appears in the
deeds and grant information from Madison Co,AL and connection to GIVENS was
one of family connection due to his daughter's marriage to a GIVENS. Also
the WEBSTER connection being one of marriage to ROBERT's daughter. I also
note that the census records for AL show ROBERT, ROBERT M. while the deeds
show ROBERT U. CHILDRESS. Possibly this Robert had two middle names or
shortened middle name. Maybe a descendant can shed some light to ROBERT
CHILDRESS's full name. See also:"Alabama Census Reocrds, 1820-1850"
