Notes for JAMES SHERFIELD CHILDRESS:
FROM NOTES RECEIVED FROM MARY PAGE
I DON'T THINK WE EVER LOOKED IN GEORGIA FOR ROBERT IN THE 1830 CENSUS.
THE COUNTY LINES OF MADISON AND JACKSON IN ALA. CHANGED MANY TIMES AND
FOR A WHILE THERE WAS A COUNTY BETWEEN THEM. AS YOU CAN SEE AGNES IN
1830 LIVED IN MARSHALL CO. AND HER HUSBAND WAS DAVID AND NO RELATIONSHIP
BETWEEN THEM WAS FOUND. THE OTHER FAMILY IN MARSHALL CO. WAS ISSAC WHO
WAS IN MC MINN TENN DURING THE 1830 CENSUS. NO KINSHIP WAS FOUND, BUT
SOME OF THE NAMES IN HIS FAMILY WERE SIMILAR TO OURS. THE ONLY OTHER
SUGGESTION I HAVE IS TO TRY TO LOCATE PERSONS ASSOCIATED WITH ROBERT. I
FOUND ELISHA SANDERS SR AND JR. IN RUTHERFORD CO IN 1812 TRYING TO GET
THE COUNTY SEAT CHANGED. IN 1812 JOHN CHILDRESS RWS WAS ELSEWHERE,
POSSIBLY SEVIER CO TENN.
MARY ALSO NOTED THAT JAMES ( GRANDPA JIM) WAS 5 FOOT 8 INCHES, RED
HEADED, BLUE EYES AND VERY LEAN. HAD A SKIN CANCER UNDER HIS JAW LINE.

Hi Nelda,
Welcome! I am a subscriber to CHILDRESS-RESEARCH-L and have enjoyed the
list. I am very interested in your branch of CHILDRESS. I am a CHILDRESS by
birth, but I am also descended from the same ancestor as your RACHEL. The
surname in my family is "ESTES". There have been other spellings as well,
but the original spelling would be "ESTES".
If you should need more information concerning your family of which Rachel
descends, I can direct you to some very reliable sources. The "Estes Trails"
which is published by Editor, Larry Duke has been a excellent sources of
information. I have been a long time subscriber. There are also online
sources associated with the ESTES family thru our Europe connection who is a
well respected researcher named David Powell. I will be glad to furnish his
address for you.
I look forward to your website!

Hi List
FYI
While reading my collection of "Childress Chatter". I came across a letter
which
was very interesting. I thought I would share it with you.
"CHILDRESS CHATTER", Issue No. 23, January 1985, Consecutive Page No 277,
Page 10, From: Theodore M. BONES, Jr. of Princeton, WVA. Addressed to the
Editor-Publisher, Mrs. Molly Reigard as follows:
"Dear Mrs. Reigard:
I am certainly interested in your research on the CHILDERS-CHILDRESS
genealogies, and I decided to write to you after reading the note in my
father's "Knights Templar's" magazine yesterday.
I descend from a Lt. Robert Elliot, who served in the Revolutionary War at
Valley Forge, and had served in the preliminary Battle at Pt Pleasant, W. VA.
in 1774.
His mother and father probably lived near Fredericksburg, VA., up near
Washington, DC, but I have never been able to prove anything that far back.
There were people located near him that were from Fredericksburg possibly,
because a lot of names were alike. Madison, Hiet (Hite), and others.
Lt. Elliott married a ELIZABETH CHILDRES, whose father was STEPHEN CHILDRES,
and mother AGATHA. ELIZABETH had one brother named BOLING CHILDRES, (The
name spelling here is as they used it.) The home was in Montgomery County,
VA., some 35 miles due west of the city of Roanoke, VA. Today, on ELLICT's
Creek, named after Lt. ELLIOTT, and it forms the S.Fork of the ROANOKE River.
There are places near there named CHILDRESS, VA.
I had to guess at a lot of ideas they came from AMHERST Co, VA., some 100
miles due east. There were CHILDRES, BOLLING, and my own ancestor WILLIAM
BONES lived there until 1798, and his family seemed to have moved on over
into MONTGOMERY CO by 1781, after the Revolutionary War, but his son WILLIAM
BONES served as a Wagon Master in the final battle at Yorktown in 1781.
I had some correspondence with a genealogist named CHARLES BURTON in
Botetourt Co., who said his wife was a CHILDRESS, but couldn't trace her
family tree because many records were lost in Virginia due to fires in
Williamsburg and Richmond. Most people seem to think the first was a COL.
GRACEY CHILDRESS in early Virginia, and the wife of Pres. James POLK was a
CHILDRESS." end

Hi,
I just joined your list about five minutes ago...I am researching my four
family surnames of GILPIN/CUPP my Father and GILLOCK/Bonstein my Mother.
The CHILDRESS surname is connected to my GILLOCK surname. I am doing
complete colaterial lineages and Childress is one of these lines. Here is
what I have I hope I connect with some one and that this helps, but I also
hope someone can help me fill in the empty places...Thank You. I do keep the
information on an open web site at:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/8731
if you allow me to use the information you exchange with me I would also
like permission to put your email addy/website as a point of contact for
that family lineage, and I would hope you would put my web site addy as a
point of contact for the information we exchange, not my email addy because
the info may have come from another whose addy will be with it..
Now here is what I have...

If You Could See Your Ancestors
A Poem by Nellie Winslow Simmons Randall
If you could see your ancestors
All standing in a row,
Would you be proud of them or not?
Or don't you really know?
Some strange discoveries are made
In climbing family trees.
And some of them, you know,
Do not particularly please.
If you could see your ancestors
All standing in a row,
There might be some of them perhaps
You shouldn't care to know.
But here's another question
Which requires a different view -
If you could meet your ancestors
Would they be proud of you

Flags under which the soldiers fought including a rare infantry flank
marker and a cavalry guidon, will be on display. These banners, often
emblazoned with the names of the battles in which they were carried,
gave the soldiers a sense of unity and esprit de corps, and served as
rallying points in battle. "Soldiers love their colors with such
devotion," wrote John Casler, "that they will die in defending them."
"Maw I have lurned to write in Camp well a nuf to write letters my
self," wrote a North Carolina soldier, struggling with his newly
acquired skill. It is from the letters and diaries of the soldiers that
we gain insight into their war. They wrote honestly, recording direct
and unaffectedly personal impressions of their experiences. Compared to
the complicated rhetoric of politicians and high ranking officers, the
common soldier's view of the war was often startlingly simple: "John
Childress fell," wrote Edmund Patterson, "shot through, he said 'I am
killed, tell Ma and Pa goodbye for me.'"

OBITUARIES OF LT. HUGH MARTIN CHILDRESS AND SGT. GEORGE B. CHILDRESS
From The Texas Christian Advocate:
"Lt. Hugh M. Childress, the brave, gallant and patriotic, fell
mortally wounded at the Battle of Baton Rouge, Aug. 5th, 1862 and died
in a few hours, with that cheerfulness that ever adorned his brow
sending a final farewell to his parents and friends, and requesting them
to meet him in Heaven. Parents and friends should be cheered at such
noble sentiments when uttered by the dying. He enlisted in Capt. John N.
Gardner's company of Joe Bradley Rebels, the 15th of January, 1862 as
fifth sergeant of the company; fought through the Battle of Shiloh,
afterwards was promoted to Orderly Sergeant of the company and, at its
reorganization under the conscript act he was promoted to Second
Lieutenant. none scare rose so fast. he was liked by all and loved by
many."
"In a recent number of the Advocate you recorded the death of gallant
Lt. Hugh M. Childress, who fell at Baton Rouge, La. It now becomes my
melancholy duty to announce that his twin brother, Second Sergeant
George B. Childress, was killed early in the action before Corinth, Oct.
3, 1862. The deceased was present at the Battle of Shiloh, where he
greatly distinguished himself by his cool and soldierly bearing, and was
most severely wounded by a spent ball. Since that time he had suffered
severely from continued illness, and had joined the army from sick
furlough just previous to the battle. Against the advice of his officers
and friends, worn and feeble as he was, he went into the action and gave
up his gallant spirit in defense of his country."
Robert Uel Childress and Temperance Connally Childress are buried in
Jenkins Cemetery, located on Big Cove Road, West of the Flint River, in
Madison County, Alabama....There are CSA Markers there for Hugh and
George.....
George Burton Childress and Hugh Martin Childress were twin sons of
Robert U. Childress and Temperance Connally Childress. They were born
November 22, 1833 in Madison County, Alabama, the 12th and 13th child of
17 siblings.

REFERENCE GREG WHITLOCKS QUESTION CONCERNING THE MARRIAGE OF AGNES
CHILDRESS AND MR Thomas TURLEY 1799 IN AMELIA CO VA AND IN PITTSYLVANIA
CO,VA
My only thoughts on this is that it is a CLERK'S error, a present day
researcher's error or a HISTORIAN's, from Amelia Co or Pittsylvania Co,
error. Does anyone else have a thought as to why the marriage above is
listed in two different Counties? They are at least 4 counties apart.
Amelia co being somewhat northeast to Pittsylvania Co.,which lies closer
to the NC border, so proximity is not an option.

The Handbook of Texas Online
CHILDRESS, HUGH MARTIN, JR. (1835-1897). Hugh Martin (Mart) Childress,
Jr., cattle dealer and traildriver, son of Rev. Hugh Martin and Susannah
(Watters) Childress, Sr., was born in Bastrop County, Texas, on May 24,
1835. He was the third of four children of a Methodist minister; the
eldest son, Lemuel, was killed accidentally at the Alamo before the
siege. His parents, both Tennesseans, had migrated in 1832 from Alabama
to Bastrop County; the elder Childress served as a militiaman and ranger
there and later fought under Edward Burlesonqv at the battle of Salado
Creek.qv By 1856 the family had settled near Camp Colorado in Coleman
County. Hugh, Jr., entered the stock business in Lampasas and Brown
counties and in 1859-60 won contracts to supply beef to Camp Colorado.
In 1861 he started a ranch at Post Oak Springs in western Coleman County
and was taxed for 400 cattle valued at $2,000. During the Civil Warqv
Childress served with J. J. Callan's minutemen and in Company B under
Henry Fossett at Camp Colorado. In January 1865 he fought in the battle
of Dove Creekqv against Kickapoo Indians bound for Mexico. In April he
collected cattle to drive to northern markets but lost his horse herd to
Comanche raiders. A year later, with his holdings increased to over
8,000 head through purchase and consignment, Childress piloted a small
herd from Coleman County to central Iowa. In June 1866 he started 2,500
cattle to Colorado over what became the Goodnight-Loving Trail,qv but
lost both cattle and horses to Indians before reaching the Pecos.
He regularly sent herds to Kansas between 1867 and 1869 and in 1870 was
a preeminent drover in West Texas. He trailed more cattle than John
Hittson, John Chisum, or Charles Goodnight.qqv By this time he also had
suffered $42,680 in stock losses. In 1872 Childress joined Hittson and
others in sweeping the ranches along the Pecos near Las Vegas, New
Mexico, and recovered 11,000 stolen cattle and 300 horses. The next year
in several drives he took 10,000 head to Kansas, found no market, and
turned his herds loose to graze with wandering buffaloqv herds; he later
hired hunters to round them up. "There are few more widely known and
persistent drovers tha[n] H. M. Childress," wrote cattle entrepreneur
Joseph G. McCoy in his classic Historic Sketches (1874). But times were
changing. When the Comanches burned his headquarters in 1874 in Coleman
County, Childress left the trail and settled on a small ranch in
Throckmorton County.
He pioneered in driving herds from west central Texas to Kansas markets
as early as 1866 and was a major cattle dealer and drover for more than
a decade after the Civil War. He dealt regularly with other stalwarts of
the trade, and like many of them he abandoned the trail by the
mid-1870s. He was never active in church work or politics. He married
Hulda Ann Cox in Bell County in 1853, and the couple had four children.
In 1888 Childress left Texas, settled on a small ranch in Grant County,
New Mexico, and pursued his Indian-depredation claims, most of which
were later paid. After he was accused of murdering ranchman Ed Moss, he
fled into the Gila wilderness. He was killed by a sheriff's posse on the
White House Ranch near Cliff on September 23, 1897.

Hi Kay,
Thank you very much for posting this important information ref the UK
Document. I have sent this information to a relative in the UK ...will
keep you and our listers up to date concerning that information.

NOTE: Cindy Childrey sent me the Magazine of Virginia Genealogy. I have
enjoyed reading it. If you have any other questions or if I can do a name
search for this list, let me know. As you can see from the lists, there are
many names who married into the Childress family or who were connected thru
other lines...also thru legal records, such as deeds, witnesses and etc.
Also according to PAGE 219, they say the list was continued from Volume 38,
No. 2...So, there were probably other names listed prior to these. I have
not seen those.
I have been to the site address shown above and enjoyed seeing the original
documents!
Thank you for writing!
