Hi List
FYI
This post is in reference to "Deeds of Amherst & Albemarle Co's Virginia"
which were dated October 24, 2000. I made reference to the Stinnett-L
archives and the suggestion that John CHILDRESS of Knox Co, TN was possibly
the one mentioned as having married a STINNETT. According to VA
deeds/marriages between two Stinnetts & CHILDRESS's. & After looking at the
date of birth for John CHILDRESS Jr. who was born 1759, he would have been
too young to have been married to the STINNETT daughter.
A noted Childress researcher said this: "I think that ARW veteran John
CHILDRESS Jr., born December 9, 1759, was too young to have been Benjamin
Stinnett's son-in-law. Benjamin Stinnett's WILL was probated July 5, 1773,
and this John CHILDRESS Jr. would have been only 13 years old at that time."
I agree with that statement. The information from the Stinnett-L has two
CHILDRESS marriages. Henry and John CHILDRESS. For further information
reference this family, go to www. rootsweb.com (Lists) and go to the Stinnett
archives. Type in CHILDRESS. If anyone has anything to add to this please
let
us hear from you! Thanks.

Calvert County, MD d. July 5, 1773 Amherst Co, VA married Elizabeth SANDERS,
daughter of William SANDERS and Alice FAULKNER. Two of the daughters from
this marriage married CHILDRESS's, JOHN and HENRY. For further information,
check the Stinnett-L archives and type in CHILDRESS. It is suggested from
the posts on the Stinnett-L archives, that from the STINNETT - CHILDRESS
marriages, a JOHN CHILDRESS in Knox Co, TN, who was b.1759 & a ARW Soldier,
could very well be of this CHILDRESS marriage.
There is also a 1773 Amherst County, VA deed where John WEBB bought 180 acres
on Threshers Creek and was a neighbor of JOHN and HENRY CHILDRESS. Other
neighbors whose families are connected to CHILDRESS were, Peter CARTER and
JOHN STINNETT. MITCHELL CHILDRESS SR lived near JOHN WEBB at the time of the
Tax List for 1787 Wilkes Co, NC. MITCHELL CHILDRESS Sr, it was said, moved
to TN in 1793 and on to Knox CO, TN in 1794.

Abraham CHILDERS, Sr. (c.1625 - bef. Nov. 1680)
The origin of the name is undoubtedly English, for it has not been found
in early records of either Ireland or Scotland. In 1601, the name
"Childers" appears in the records of Padiham Parish, Lancashire; and as
"Chylders" in the records of St Michael le Belfry Parish in Yorkshire.
In early Henrico County records it is spelled Childers, Childres,
Childress,Childrey, and even Childrs.
He was living in the Virginia Colony, in Henrico County, prior to 1656.
On 28 February 1656/7 William Harris of Curles sold for "one bill" to
Abrah Childres "the parcel of land he now lives on". No amount of
acreage was mentioned but the land and his house was located "by the
(James) river on the lower side of Morgan's Landing and was bounded by
the river, Morgan's, a meadow, a swamp, and Clarke's path". The name of
his wife, whom he probably married in England, has never been learned.

3.James Wesley.
It was Jim, who helped John George to make his escape from jail and
hanging for the murder of Hosea Towry. Jim hid George over night in a
hollow chestnut log, then rode him to safety by horseback.John George
disappeared for six years, but in 1874 he was captured in Jackson
County, Alabama and brought to Fayetteville for trial. Judge Hickerson
presided. The Widow Towry and others testified. On Wednesday, July 15, a
jury found George guilty of murder in the first degree.
George escape escaped.Captain Jim Davis was a tough character a
successful lawman. It did not take him long to find George and take him
into custody. George's friends decided to disguise themselves as
Indians, then murder Davis. A simple scheme. But, after getting the drop
on Davis, they changed their mind. In exchange for his life, Davis
promised to leave and never bother George again. And we know nothing
further of John Coleman George.

JACKSON SUN VOL.III NO.32 APRIL 27,1877 JACKSON,TN
ALMOST A TRAGEDY
On Friday evening of last week, near Spring Creek in this co,Preston
CHILDRESS was accidently shot through the rt hand by Vivian
HILLIARD,the wound inflicted necessitating the amputation of the hand
near the elbow. At the time,HILLIARD was standing some six feet
from CHILDRESS,carelessly handling a shotgun loades with turkey
shot, when one barrel was accidently discharged, the shot crushing through
CHILDRESS hand and instantly killing a dog standing some ten feet from
him. Both parties are mere boys, hardly in their teens, and this is
another sad lesson of the peril of deadly weapons in youthful and
inexperienced hands.Young CHILDRESS,we learn,is the main support and
hope of a widowed mother.
