This coming July, my father will be spending time with his aunt, my great aunt Viva. She is the sole surviving grand daughter of John Branlow Childers! She is an active woman, with a sharp memory. I have never met her, and just recently realized the relationship. I am so excited that we may finaly get first hand information on the missing family links that we have all been searching for!

I was in Clarksville, TX at the "annex" of the courthouse doing some research. I came across a Holman Childers. I didn't look up every reference to Holman, but in many of the ones I saw, the name Bagby was associated with Holman Childers.

It sounds as if we have a connection. I am so excited about that!
My email is jmas8320(a)aol.com Please let me have yours and if you are no longer on ancestry we can communicate.
Family stories are that Elvira was a full blood Indian. I think that she is Elvira Denton born in TN and raised in MS. Married Holman F. Childers, JR. in MS. The Holman jr. Childers family have in their family records that Holman and Elvira died in MS. But I think they went to AR and then to TX, if not him, then Elvira and her children.
My great grandmother, Sallie's first daughter, Edna Turner moved to Oklahoma in the 1920's looking for her Indian relatives.
If I have an email or snail mail, I can keep you updated on my progress with the Indian search on this side of the family!

Thank you for the prompt reply. You know much more than I do.
The John D that I am researching is my paternal grandfather. Due to a bitter divorce when I was an infant, I know very little about him. Since there seems to be several John Ds I'm having some difficulty in confirming the accuracy of the information I have gained through research and family stories.
I believe the John D you are researching is my great grandfather. I believe he was born around 1854. I believe he died in 1935 and is buried in New Mexico. My father was John Duaine. His father was John David. From what I know John David (my grandfather) was born in 1901 and lived in New Mexico and later moved to Arizona. One of his siblings was Mabel (or Mable). I know nothing about sheep herding. My grandfather was a sign maker/painter. I believe his parents were John D. (middle name unknown) and Julia Watson. I believe John Ds parents were Holman Childers and Elvira Frasier (although it sounds like you came up with Elvira Royal).
I know that as an adult my grandfather was very active with the Navajo tribe and did a lot of work on the reservation. He spoke fluent Navajo (?) and was even taught some tribal dances. We have been told that he was raised on the reservation for a significant part of his childhood and that he was half Indian, which is what I am trying to research. So far I've found nothing to substantiate this.
On a side note, I don't know how much longer I will be a member of ancestry, so if I don't respond, it is most likely because I am no longer a member.

The John D. Childers in my tree was born in 1853 in AR.
He was a half brother to my great grandmother Sallie Royal Wood. He had two sisters, Amanda M Childers b. 1851 in MS and Martha K. Childers b. 01 Feb 1855 in AR d.23 Nov 1931, TX. His mother was Elvira Denton(supposition)Childers Royal Busby Frazier.
Elvira Royal and her daughter Sallie Poole and Sallie's daughter Edna Poole were traveling with John D. abt. 1880 to New Mexico or Arizona to herd sheep and start a new life (family story). Near Colorado City, TX Sallie met and married W.A. Wood and the Wood couple, Edna Poole, and Elvira returned to Coryell county, Tx. to farm. John D. continued his journey to the west and settled in New Mexico (according to family stories my greatgrandmother Sallie told to her children)
I have never been able to find him in New Mexico.
Kindly reply and tell me if we could possibly be connected.

Thank you for the contact. I have not been able to come up with any dates in or near 1845, so I doubt this is the same person.
