I agree with you about recording all the variations of the Childers name. I note each spelling I find and a where I found it. Many of my early families have 4 or 5 alternate names.
I have spent years looking for Isom/Isam/Isham's roots and still have never located a birth record, marriage record,a family bible, not even a deed in Virginia. I probably won't live long enough to figure it out either, but it won't be from lack of trying. One of these days I'll convince my brother to do one of those DNA tests. I don't think I've ever seen a descendant of Isom Childers in the Childers DNA Project. It might take awhile, he's the type that won't fill out a census because it's nobodys business.

Wow!
What an awesome collection of original records form the Scott or Russell Co. VA area!!
An amazing number of Childers/Childress Revolutionary War soldiers seem to trace back to near Albemarle and Buckingham Counties in VA ca 1760 (before Amherst Co. was split off)
Even though I can show no family ties among them, those Rev. War vets seem to hang together in a grouping worth keeping track of together; so I've done that at

I don't expect to live long enough to solve much of the mystery of how those Rev War vets might, or might not be connected in Albemarle and Buckingham County areas ca 1760 in VA--
But you certainly area showing one huge step forward in extracting so many more original records about their kin.
-
Maybe we'll soon be compiling more of our trees
where the spelling flexibility is nearly ideal--for instance
on the www.familysearch.org system that always says it's a few months form opening up those trees to the general public.
--
But until then, I feel forced to compile spelling variations explicitly, so that all of us who arrive with different pre-conceptions of proper spelling--
have the chance to see the available compilations under other people's compiled spelling variations.
~~Keep up the GREAT work, Warren Forsythe

Message Board Post:
Hello,
Thank you for posting, I'm set up to receive a notification whenever a post is made to the Childers board, so I have seen your Childers updates. But I'm having a bit of trouble following it.
For the sake of simplicity
Childers could be Childers, Childress, Childris, Childreys etc
Isom counld be Isom, Isam, Isham, and I've even seen Isaac
Am I reading this right?
Abraham Childers born 1710 of Henrico county (son of John born 1689) maybe married Elizabeth Mosby
Child:
Unknown Childers of Albemarle or Buckingham Co born abt 1740 m Ann
Child:
Abraham Childers Rev Vet #R1922 born 1750 m Elizabeth Roberts
Child:
Unknown Childers of Russell Co also born 1750. married another Elizabeth Roberts.
And these are the parents of Isom Childers ???
If so there are some problems here.
So, "hoping to promote more response and searching" (me too):

Also Isom died after 1850, he and Mary can be found in Spring River Twp, Lawrence Co,
D 554 F 554 (next door to son Esquire)
L34 Isom Childress, 65, M, Farmer, $750, VA
L35 Mary, 60, F, VA
So there is:
Abraham (Rev War #R1922) and Elizabeth (Roberts) Childers daughter of Mary and Cornelius Roberts
Abraham & Lucy Blair Childris (Maiden Name unknown) who was the widow of Joseph Blair. Married before 1798 probably in Lee, Russell or Washington Co. I found information that Joseph Blair died 1795 in many public family trees (Unsourced - I really wish there weren't so many trees that have as their only source - somebody else's tree.) . If its accurate, Lucy isn't Isom's parent.
Would like to learn more about Lucy (Unk) Blair Childers. Anybody have any idea about whether Elizabeth or Lucy was married to the constable who was the 2nd Abraham, first appeared on the tax record in 1797 and lived in the Lower Dist? And could this Abraham be Isom's brother? Sons of the Upper Dist Abraham?
And to Gayle: I've always thought the Isom Childers in IL, Rev Patriot was the one from North Carolina that married Patience Parker
Hopefully this will get the ball rolling

Thank you for your reply with which I agree. Shortly after I made that post, I deleted my tree above Isom because there just wasn't any supporting evidence.
Something that puzzles me is the existence of an Isom Childers in Illinois making application for a Revolutionary War pension, if I recall correctly, about 1818. I don't find him anywhere else and cannot connect him to our branch.
Childers/Childress folks were/are an adventuresome lot. I told my husband that his family was easy to trace. They moved from Germany to the Northampton/Lehigh area of eastern Pennsylvania in the 1600s and 1700s and never moved more than 10 miles from home. Most of the current generation are still there. I believe I called them boring and provincial. Tracking the patterns of my family is challenging and often frustrating beyond words, but never boring!

Parents of Isom Childers/Childress (1785 VA - 1841 AR) seem unknown;
So, hoping to promote more response and searching,
I posted a couple guesses at the following places on internet:
I married both records to the same spouse record
. Name: Mary Polly RITCHIE
. Sex: F
. Birth: 1794 in ,Botetourt,VA
. Death: 1851 in ,Lawrence,AR
The first record is posted under Isom Childers spelling:

and the second record posted under Isom Childress spelling:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&db=townsendthos&id...
BTW
Since I just uploaded to internet these new compilations, probably until late 19 Jan 2012, these would not be findable on the
overall rootsweb worldconnect family tree index at

My mother always talked about a grandma Childers. That is all I know about the name. How can I find the missing link.
The surnames in family so far are: Buckallew, Daniels, Cook, Sams, Vermillion, Pattee, Stice, Moffett, and Piper.
Does anyone have a clue as to how to start looking. They may be from Missouri, Kentucky or Tennessee

I don't have any answers yet, but your suggestion seems to have a discrepancy:
The dates for Mrs Lucy Nevil and Abrham Childers could be way off
It looks like Lucy Thomas had already become the widow of James Nevil in 1752 in Albemarle Co VA
--
So she probably was not the mother of Isom Childers/Childress born ca 1785

Hello Nora,
I have contacted you by email regarding some of this info. I have tentatively put Abraham V. Childers (1750-1849) and Lucy Thomas Neville (1765-1830) as Isom's parents, but have not confirmed it to complete satisfaction.
Not sure how Absalom Fortenberry Childers found his way to Alabama from Arkansas, but it could possibly have been during the Civil War, as he was attached to Tennessee and Arkansas regiments.
Something I did find that caused some confusion until I got it worked out was that Jennie Alabama's aunt, Esther Lucinda Bell, married John Daniel Burt. Jennie Alabama's mother, Elizabeth Bell, married Richard Moody Burt. The two sisters married two brothers and both had daughters named Jennie A.

Thank you for your reply. Your information agrees with what I have for the children of Isom and Mary (Ritchie) Childers. The post I made lists my line of descendancy from Isom and Mary, through James R on down. I've never found any more information on James R and Sarah (Carter) Childers son, Finley. And I keep hoping someday someone somewhere will finally figure out who were the parents of Isom Childers himself.
I do have a question for you. I've always wondered how Absalom and Jennie Alabama Burt got together. Any ideas why Absalom was in Alabama?
Still working on the Childers family after all these years,
Nora

--I have James R as one of Isom Childers' sons, but that is the only name I have that matches the children you listed. My family history does note that the older four of James R's five sons died fighting for the Confederacy. The oldest son, Hiram, was killed at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, where his cousin, our ancestor, Absolam Fortenberry Childers (1841-1913), was wounded. It is also said that James was a representative in the lower house of the Arkansas state legislature from 1846-48 and 1856-60 and died in 1863.

SHOT FOR DESERTION
Being citizen soilders in the best of American tradition, often men would
leave army life to return home to plant or harvest. Or perhaps they would
return home during times of family need. They would then return to Army life
when harvest was over or planting. It was a common practice early in the
war, more in the south than in the north. As the war progressed this
tradtion, was put to rest. Often ,like in this case, an example was made of men
who were found to be Awol. This is the account of what happened to P . F.
CHILDRESS of the 26th inf. 1st Co.I, Tenn. CSA from:
TUPELO BY REV. JOHN H. AUGHEY, A.M.,
CHICAGO:RHODES & McCLURE PUBLISHING CO.1905
"About 3 o'clock in the afternoon, I approached two prisoners who were
heavily ironed. They were handcuffed, had bands and chains upon their ankles,
similar to mine, and were also chained together and to a bolt in the floor.
I inquired for what offence they were incarcerated. The prisoner whom I
addressed was a tall gentleman with a very intellectual expression of
countenance and of prepossessing manners. He was pale and sad.
"We are charged with desertion."
"Did you desert?"
"I enlisted in the Confederate service for twelve months. At the
expiration of my term of service I asked permission to return home, stating that I
had learned from a trustworthy source that my family were suffering from a
lack of the necessaries of life; that they lived in Tennessee, which is
occupied by Federal troops. Confederate money there has no purchasing power,
not being worth the paper on which it is printed; that I desired to relieve
my family from their distress, and as my term of service had expired, I
demanded my discharge. This they refused, stating that the Confederate congress
had passed a law requiring all soldiers who had enlisted for any term,
however short, to be held to service during the war, and that all who left
before its close would be considered guilty of desertion, and if arrested would
be shot. Regarding the law as a tyrannical enactment, and of no binding
force, I attempted to return to my family, but was arrested and committed to
this prison."
"What will be your fate?"
"I don't know, but fear the worst. At our trial Gen. Bragg said some
salutary examples must be made to deter soldiers from deserting, or the army
would waste away as snow before the bright beams of the vernal sun. His bile
and bitterness overflowed in acrimonious invectives."
The other prisoner's statement was a perfect counterpart of his comrade's.
The first was named Melville Baillie, of Raleigh, Tennessee, and the other
Polk Childress, of Hickory Wythe, Tenn. Their friend, Parley Van Horn, of
Colliersville, Tenn., they left sick at the home of his cousin, Felix
Grundy Ayres, in Byhalia, Miss., who thus escaped. I left them and walked to the
opposite side of the prison, when I observed a file of soldiers drawn up
in front of the prison. Two officers entered, and walking up to the
prisoners with whom I had just been conversing, unfastened their chains, and
ordered them to follow. As the officers passed Capt. Bruce, he asked,
"What are you going to do with these men?"
"Going to shoot them," was the reply.
They then showed him the warrant for their execution, having written
across it in red letters, "condemned to death." When the prisoners reached the
door, the file of soldiers separated, received the prisoners into the space
in their midst, marched them across the railroad, and shot them.
Thus was perpetrated an act of cruel tyranny that cries loudly to heaven
for vengeance. Two families, helpless and destitute, were thus each deprived
of its head, upon whom they were dependent for support, and abandoned to
the cold charity of a selfish world. The wages earned by a year's service in
behalf of the wicked, cruel, and vindictive Confederate states, was an
ignominious death and a dishonored grave. The widow and the fatherless cry to
heaven for vengeance, and their cries have entered into the ears of the Lord
Of Sabaoth."
