Hello Darlene,
I found your post and I think you're looking for my family!
My ancestors were Ayers Childress and his wife Margaret Bruce Childress. Their daughter was Malinda Parazadia Childress who married Williamson G. Clemmons in Tishomingo County in Mississippi in 1849. I have more information on them if you'd like.
It appears that the names Childers and Childress are frequently confused. In my family records, it's always been Childress, but it makes me wonder...
Hope to hear from you,
Julie Lovejoy

Hi there. I am a decendant of Goldsby Childers also, thru my mom's tree. I am researching and have been told that it ties to the Weathersbee line. Goldsby Childers is my greatx4 grandfather. The Belton, TX museum is full of info on him, including slave chronicles in the slave venacular. I plan on going to Belton soon to check it out. When I lived in Bell County, a brochure I picked up said that Goldsby is the first recorded settler in Bell County. I was living there at the time and got so excited. I hope you get my message. Feel free to write back.

Good afternoon:
Sarah Childress is stated to have been married to Nicholas Perkins during
the latter 1600's in Charles City County, Virginia or in Henrico County
Virginia???? The Perkins, Childers and Ellis surnames show up on a number of
documents. Any assistance with primary or secondary documentation of this
marriage and these lines greatly appreciated. Always happy to swap files.
Walt

Re-think on the birth ages of John CHILDERS and wife Mary GARRETT!
Ages per census vary at times for individuals such as an individual who was 30 in 1800 may not list his age in 1810 as 40. I have seen similar examples before that can create wide variances. To my knowledge, Jonathan "John" CHILDERS did not appear in any census where his age was specifically listed. The granddaughter's letter specifically said he died in 1834 at age 84. This sets his birth in 1750 per oral family history. The 1850 census does state that Mary (GARRETT) CHILDERS is 87 years old. This places her birth at 1763. What if Mary's age was off a few years when she stated her age and or what if her written age in 1850 was misinterpreted later to read 87 when it was actually something else? What if the oral family history of Jonathan's age at death was wrong? Per the indicated birth dates, Jonathan died at age 84 and Mary died at age 96. These ages are impressive for the times.
Per the indicated birth dates of Jonathan and Mary, they would have been ages 43 and 30 when their son Henry W. CHILDERS was born in 1793. They would have been ages 60 and 47 when their youngest child Joseph CHILDERS was born in 1810. Add in the plantation purchase in 1805 when Jonathan was 55 and Mary 42 and "things" simply do not add up on ages! Another factor associated with this thought is that we have not been able to connect Jonathan CHILDERS and Mary GARRETT to other families per their indicated birth years.
If I did not know the birth years of Jonathan CHILDERS and his wife Mary GARRETT, but had the birth years of their children, I would apply the following logic. The first son named Henry was born 1793 in SC and had a sister Mary of unknown birth year. Additional siblings followed with Elizabeth in 1801, John 1804, William 1809 and Joseph 1810. Oral family history states that Jonathan and Mary had 10 sons and two daughters, but that some of the boys had died. Based on the known births in the family, gaps in children in 1797, 1799, 1800, 1806, and 1808 could explain the boys that died per oral family history. Based on the known birth years of the children, I would then assume that Jonathan and Mary married around 1792. I would further estimate the birth year of Jonathan CHILDERS per his son Henry's birth as 1768. I would then estimate Mary GARRETT's birth year as 1772. Apply these estimated birth years to the 1805 plantation purchase in Fairfield County and we have Jonathan age!
37, Mary age 33 and son Henry age 12. These ages would place Jonathan's death in 1834 at 66 and Mary's in 1859 at age 87.
If John "Jonathan" CHILDERS was born about 1768, then his father would have been born around 1738. John and Mary CHILDERS were married with children in the 1790s within South Carolina. Where were they? By 1805, through savings or inheritance, they purchased a plantation in Fairfield County.
The American Revolutionary War occurred between 1775 and 1784. John CHILDERS per my new thinking would have been 7 to 16 years old during this time period. His young age during the war would explain why he is not listed as a South Carolina Patriot during the war.
Mary GARRETT of Virginia may not have come to SC until after the war ended in 1784???? For that matter, John Jonathan CHILDERS may not as well????????????
We need some brain power on this subject and some new direction....
Questions:
Has anyone in our family branch ever been told where our line of CHILDERS came from????
