I have a James Franklin Childers in my tree. He was the son of Thomas J. Childers and husband of Fleta E. Blocker. I'm not sure about the Lake Gem location but James Franklin died 4 Sep 1973 in Pasco Co, FL. I believe that Lake Gem is in that area.

Hi cousins,
I just rejoined after about 8 years of frustration of not knowing
where my great-great-grandfather, Charles Louis Childers, came from
before he moved to Parkersburg, WV. All I could find about him was
that he was born in December 1854, and my dad had said that the family
line was that he had "left his family, and moved to Parkersburg to
start our line". He also thought that Charles had moved from St.
Mary's, WV.
Well, a couple nights ago, I found that the only record of a Charles
L. Childers from western Virginia that year was from New Milton, in
Doddridge County. Seemingly, he came from a big family in New Milton,
and was the son of Joseph K. and Alice (née Jones) Childers. Does
anyone have any info on this family? I'm looking to go to New Milton
during Memorial Week on the way to visit cousins in Keyser. I have
read that there is a Childers cemetery in New Milton.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks much.
Sincerely,
Jason Childers

Now that you mention it, I found a record for John Childers in the 12th Infantry, Co. C. It listed him as "wounded slightly in hand" during the battle for Hewlett's/Clay's Farm, Va. However, it listed him as KIA on 5/20/64. The 1907 Confederate Pensioners list has "Lutitia" Childers on its list for the 12th Infantry, Company C. and again in 1917, entered on roll in 1901.
Dont forget that the 1870 and 1880 census for Cocke Co., Tenn lists both John and his wife. I think the KIA report for my gg-grandfather was a mistake. Depending upon when the other John died, they may have confused the two.
Anyway, my gg-grandmother had moved back to York Co. by 1900 with her son Samuel, my great grandfather.

After looking over what Wanda has furnished and looking back into the records that I have. I believe that Wanda has the right parents to John Childers.
I had always had this son, John, married to a Sarah Unknown Childers with (5) children, George Washington Childers, abt 1865, Sarah Childers abt 1867, Nancy Childers abt 1869, Thomas W. Childers abt 1874 and John Childers abt 1876. Looks like I need to re-research this.
There is als a John Childers, born abt 1843 to Jacob "Little Jake" Childers. He was reportably died of disease in Charleston, S.C. during the Civil War.

I think you have the right family, Wanda. When I searched for William Childers I found that he was living in the Hickory Grove area according to the census image. This is the same area as the family of John's wife, Luticia Westmoreland daughter of Peterson Westmoreland. I dont know why only the other John of the right age appeared when I searched before.
Thank you for the help and information.

Im looking for information on the parents of my gg-grandfather, John Childers. He was born between 1835 and 1844 in South Carolina. He moved to Cocke Co., Tenn sometime in the 1860's. He is listed in the 1870 census as being 26 years old and in the 1880 census as being 45 years old. The same problem with listed age exists for his wife, Putilia Luticia Westmoreland. In 1870 she is listed as 25 years old and in 1880 she is listed as 22 years old. Both John and Luticia are listed as being born in South Carolina. I found Luticia in the 1860 census living in Hickory Grove, SC, but the only John Childers I found (age 16) was an apprentice to a wagon maker. This doesnt help me with who his parents were. Any help would be appreciated.
