Mrs. Haniks was able to answer most of your questions about Benjamin Childers/Childress who died Amherst Co VA 1775
She provided 2 alternative family group sheets from 2 different compilers over the years. The questions you asked had similar answers on both sheets
I posted first family group version on internet at
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=townsendthos&id=I2117
I posted 2nd version on internet at
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=townsendthos&id=I2122
if it's inconvenient to look at internet I copy current cersion here (you should eventually though, since updates and corrections will keep appearing on that version on itnernet)
FIRST VERSION:
ID: I2117
Name: Benjamin (maybeSonofThos) (perDanaMireles) CHILDERS
Sex: M
Birth: ABT 1735 in possibly either,(or b. ca 1710?),VA,Scotland
Death: 1775 in ,Amherst,VA

Note:
!-
Dec 2007 I, your computer compiler, Warren Forsythe received 2 DIFFERENT family
group sheets, concerning the same family, Benjamin and Ann (Joplin/Jopling) who
married ca 1758 probably in VA.
Both family sheets were provided by Virginia Childers Hanks, 908 Seattle Ave
Ellensburg WA 98926.
(1) first family sheet compiled 2002 by Carl E. Childers, 1023 County Road 105,
Kittsd hill OH 45645 . He descends from Thomas B. Childers, apparently
the son Thomas B, whom Carl lists a son of above Benj Childers. HOWEVER
IN THE 2ND SHEET, THOMAS B. CHILDERS IS NOT LISTED AS A CHILD OF BENJ & ANN;
=====================================
(2)
Second family sheet received Dec 2007 was by Dana (female) Mireless,done ca1992
1447 Hillside Drive, Glendale CA 91208 actually says "written 10 or 20 yrs ago"
References cited by her, Dana Mireless:
Amherst Co. VA Will Book 1: page 293.
"The CHILDRESS Family" by Oscar L. Childress.
"Amherst County In the Revolution" Mrs. Hanks thinks author named Sweeney.
[book] Marriages of Some Virginia Residents 1607-1800
Marriage Records of Amherst Co, Va 1763-1800.
A note stated that Benjamin Childers Sr. and his borhter Samuel both applied
for pensions while residents of Albemarle Co. VA. [since Benj. died before Rev
War, the pension might have been from 1755-1763 war or earlier?];
=======================================================================
(3) third source information provided by the above Virginia Hanks dec 2007:
" 'from Mark Childers, now deceased, in 2005, I read this twister:
Marjory (Powell) Childers/Childress was a first cousin by marriage to her
husband John Childers, Sr. Marjory's father, militia Captain Thomas Powell,
Sr. was an uncle to Edmund Powell of Amherst Co., VA. Edmund Powell's wife was
Lucy Jopling whose sister Ann Jopling was married to Benjamin Childers, Sr.,
the younger brother of Marjory's husband John Childers. Both the Powells and
Joplings were of Welsh descent.' "
-----------
[Mrs. Hanks continues] Mark [Childers] was a leader in the DNA project for
Childress/Childers/etc. descendants, and he divided us into three Categories --
one of which he claimed came to Virginia in 1745. This is the family of John
Childers Sr. who married Marjory Powell; and Benjamin Childers who married Ann
Jopling. These Childers said they were from Scotland, sailing from Glennock,
Scotland in 1744.
-------------------------------------------
[Mrs. Hanks continues] Unrelated to the above Childers, my [own] probable line
were the early arrivers, coming from England [Yorkshire] in the mid-1600s.
The emigrant ancestor of the Scots Childers was John Childers/Childress, age 45
on the 1745 crossing [from Scotland to Virginia].
Son Joseph, planter, lived on Rockhouse Creek, (I think in Albemarle Co. VA).
He was the father of John who married Marjory Powell and Benjamin who married
Ann Jopling. Joseph died 1763 at age 43.
A brother of John and Benjamin Childers was Joseph Childers of Amherst and
Kanawha Counties, VA [Kanawha Co. became WV after 1863]. Some of his
descendants were in grant Co., Ky. at the same time as my [Childers] tribe, and
also went to Missouri and Oregon at the same time as my tribe.
--------------------------------------------
[Mrs. Hanks continues about the above Mark Childers who died 2005] Now I don't
know Mark's documentation other than oral family histories form descendant sof
the Scots Childers/Childress in TN (Knox Co.). I studied the family of Joseph
Childers of Amherst [VA] and Kanawha [VA, now WV] Counties in order to separate
that family from mine, and I know of no records or etc. to dispute Mark's
findings;

Thanks for all that y'all have posted over the years about the Childers and Childress and related families!
This Spring 2007 a new compilation of the children of Abraham Childers (ca1681-1763) was published by J F Dorman etc in
page 723-724 of Vol. 3, 4th ed (vols. pub. Gen Pub
Co aprx2004-2007) of Adventurers of Purse and Person by John Frederick Dorman
Today I tried to post that particular compilation (the Va. Gen. vol 34-35 compilation is also very helpful, but I jusrt highlighting this new compilation in particular), in an attempt to estimate the vital records dates of Childers children more closely, using the documents cited by Mr. Dorman.
My initial effort is posted at
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=townsendthos&id=I1772
SURMAMES: Abraham Childers married (1) Elizabeth Cannon
--his mother-in-law was a Woodson [so Childers compilation listed above is part of a Woodson descendancy] (2) perhaps unknown wife ca 1743-1751 (3) Lucy (_____) THOMAS then widow of James Nevil d. 1752, then aft march 1752 married Abraham Childers b.ca1681
children from marriage (1) married spouses of surnames:
Pryor, Prior, Taylor, Tucker, James Taylor (a step-sibling) son of above Lucy.

Rita,
I've been out of town and I am catching up on my emails.
I am also a descendent of Jonathan and Rebecca. His son James Fremont
Childers is my gr-gr-grandfather.
I still do need info about them and their ancestors.
Let me know if I can provide any information to you.
Thanks,
Paul Childers

My 4 g grandfather was William Archibald Childers, almost surely born in Virginia, but perhaps (based on the name) he could have been a previous generation to Josiah? Archibald married Ruth/Rutha Rutledge, migrated from VA and wound up in Hardeman Co., TN. Two of his sons moved to Tippah Co., MS, one of them my3 g grandfather James Lee Childers. One researcher believes that Archibald was in the Montgomery, then the Wythe Co militias 1799 - 1810. We have no information, nor even any clues, about his parents or siblings. If you have further information that might connect this William Archibald to your Childers, I'd be very interested.
