Prominent Creek Woman Is Dead
BROKEN ARROW, Jan.15 -(AP)-
Funeral services were held Tuesday for Mrs Lydia Childers,
78 years old prominent fullblood Creek Indian woman, who
died Sunday of burns suffered Saturday when her clothing
caught fire while she was at work about an open fire in the
yard of her home.
Mrs Childers, a graduate of the Carlisle Indian school of
Pennsylvania was born in Broken Arrow, the daughter of a
Creek Indian who rode into the territory with the Reverend
Louchridge, pioneer Presbyterian Indian missonary, on the
back of a mule when the Creek nation was transferred from
Alabama to Oklahoma. Her family was one of the oldest and
most prominent of the Creek nation. Mrs Childers was a
close friend to Miss Alice Robertson, the only woman who
ever respresented Oklahoma in congress.

It's usually said to be English. However, the Dutch have a surname, Shilders, that could be one of the origins as well.

Does anyone know the origins of our surname? I looked on ancestry.com and it was not very specific. How far back does it go?

Clell Childers was the son of Elgie Pedro Childers and Flossing Skaggs. Elgie Pedro was born 10/21/1877 and died 1/8/1972. Pedro's father was John Allen Childers, born in Butler County KY, 10/19/1850, mother Elvira or Melvira McVey, his third wife. John Allen's father was Samuel Childers III, born in Warren County,KY about 1811; Samuel II, born in Goochland Cou. VA, I think was his father; however, I am getting stuck in this area. I think Abraham Childers was his father, but this I am still searching for. I am the granddaughter of Elgie Pedro and Mark Childers.

I am sorry to read about your loss. I am the editor of the Childers/Childress Family Association Newsletter and would like to put this obituary into it but I need the original newspaper where it was published. Your Obit did not say where Ozark is located. Thank you and my condolences go with you.
Martha

sorry, hoped we could help each other, however they are not the same person. Most Childers/Childress are related somewhere in time. To see for yourself visit the link and see the DNA evidence.
