Hi Lewis,
Thanks for that Childress link. I keep forgetting the spelling evolved to Childers, Childress, Childrey, etc.
I keep seeing Milner Childers who died 1741 listed as a son of John Childers born 1795 (son of Thomas Childers and Mary Milner). This Milner Childers witnessed a deed in 1733 which suggests a birthdate of 1712 (if he was "of age" in 1733). I suspect he was either John's brother or he descends from Elizabeth Pugh - Abraham Childers. Or, maybe Elizabeth Milner if she married a Childers (no details).
Thanks again,
Gary
Susan,
Were your relatives in Albemarle County, specifically, near the Southwest
mountains or Keswick/Shadwell/Stony Point area? I have some distant cousins
who married Thomas's. John Thomas b. abt 1785 m. Charlotte ??? Children:
Harriet, Peggy, James, John, Tazewell, Cornelia and Virginia Thomas.
Cornelia married Gideon Sprouse, Virginia married Colby Sprouse, Harriet
married John Sprouse, all brothers as well.
Regards,
Steve Stevens

Hi Susan,
I suspect that Abraham Childers (wife Frances) in Albemarle VA was a son of the Abraham married to Lucy. So far I haven't delved into that yet and the e various other names that popped
These findings are of interest to my research because
1) Albemarle VA is where Alexander Wilkey married Susannah Mourning Stockton c1770.
2) My ancestor David Wilkey born 1784, son of Alexander Wilkey and Susannah Mourning Stockton, married wife Catherine (Childers) c1815 in Wilkes NC (David's mother was a widow there c1787). This indicates a geographic proximity back in VA between the two families prior to NC.
3) A Willis Childers witnessed a deed in Albemarle VA (forgot to copy that one), and a Willis Childers shows up in Wilkes NC with Milner Childers 1790s. Milner Childers born c1760 is believed to be Catherine's father because findings in Wilkes NC and Hall GA support Milner as her father over Willis although Willis and Milner appear to be related. Also, the first name Willis appears in later generations of these Childers lines and in my David Wilkey-Catherine Childers line.
4) This suggests that some of the Henrico VA Childers went west to Albemarle VA then some then went south to Wilkes NC.

Gary,
Thanks for the great notes!
A lot of this information I did not have. VERY interesting.
You may have read about Lucy Thomas. According to what I have found out, her maiden name could have been Thomas.
She had at least two children prior to her marrying James Neville, and later Abraham Childress. Her brother is mentioned as Michael Thomas on some records, so it would seem that her maiden name was Thomas. I descend from her son James Thomas (or whatever his last name was).
You mentioned an Abraham Childers and wife Francess of Albemarle in 1773. Do you have any idea if this was Abraham Childers IV? I have not found a wife for him so far.....
Also, I did not have a Joseph Childers in my notes.
Thanks again,
Susan

Hi again Susan,
I did some research at the genealogy library today. You may have all of this already on the Thomas, Childers, Nevil, Cannon and other links in Albemarle VA. That's the area where my Wilkey line came from who later married Childers in Wilkes NC c1817.
Let me know if this is redundant, etc.
Thanks,
Gary
Abraham Childers who married Lucy Thomas Neville administered James Nevill's estate c1754 in Albemarle VA. Abraham Childers died in Albemarle Co VA 1765 or 1766. There are several pages of 1766 records where James Neville (now of age...Jr) went to court to get property he said was promised to him Abraham Childers now deceased (married to Lucy, James mother), with James Thomas and Elizabeth his wife plaintiffs (apparently with James Neville). He mentions that Abraham asked him (James Neville) if he had heard that James Thomas was going to be married. Then Abraham said that James Thomas was going to marry his daughter Bett (Elizabeth) and that Abraham and Lucy were agreed to give his daughter Elizabeth 50lbs or a negro and LUcy agreed to give her son James 50lbs or a negro and Abraham said that the rest of Lucy's children were already provided for. John Cannon age 56, Michael Thomas age 52, Samuel Taylor (of lawful age), Hezekiah Davidson (of lawful age..of Cumberland Cou!
nty) also gave depositions. In particular, the deposition of Samuel Taylor, of lawful age, says "James Thomas purchased from him a piece of land and told him his mother was in debt to him 50lbs which he was to be paid for the land. Said James's mother gave her bond for 50lbs."
Other findings:
Abraham Childers witnessed a Drury Tucker to Ezekiah Davison deed 1750 (Albemarle Co VA)
Ezekiah Davison witnessed a Drury Tucker to Abraham Childers deed.
A Drury Tucker to Abraham Childers deed 1752 is adj William Cannon.
John Boling/Bolling (Colo. or Coronel) and John Childers had land adjacent to a Sacheverall Whitebread to William Marsal deed in Albemarle VA. A John Bolling in Henrico 1740s was involved in estates and other records of Milner Childers, Henry Pew and some others in Henrico VA. John Bolling was a descendant of John Rolfe and Pocahontas.
John Childers (Childrey) in Albemarle deeds to son Francis Childers land next to Colo. Bolling 1751.
A Robert Thompson (of Cumberland) deed 1752 to William Childers mentions Moses Childers a brother.
Joseph Childers and wife Mary in 1763 (of Amherts) deed Albemarle land to Alex. McCaul.
Abraham Childers and wife Frances of Albemarle in 1773 deed to Alexander McCaul of Henrico 100a in Albemarle; witnesses include Jno Childers Jr.

Hi Susan,
Thanks for the reply. I'll keep my eye open for Thomas findings while doing Childers research.
I've researched the Childers/Childress website and some other good sources. I guess I first need to determine if the Milner Childers line originates with Thomas Childers - Mary Milner, and if she was actually a Milner, or if Elizabeth Milner married a Childers and started this line. The estate of John Milner mentioned Will Parker and Mary Parker, now married to Easly, as his stepchildren. James Babicom mentions Elizabeth, Martha and Mary Milner and Will Parker as step-children (in-laws) in his 1692 will. If this was Mary Milner, then the Thomas Childers origin works. If Elizabeth also married a Childers, that one works too. Or, Mary Milner who married Thomas Childers might also be Mary Parker Easly Milner, sister of Will Parker.
Thanks,
Gary

I did receive some of my information from Bill Davidson, so you may want to ask him about some of this. You will find him on the Message Boards. I do not assume all the information I get from other researchers is accurate, but make notes on who and where the information came from. I do know a lot about the Thomas's and their closer relatives, but the other surnames I am not positive about.....
Since my main concern was with finding out more on the Thomas line, I have not researched a great deal on the Childers and their other relatives.
As you know there is confusion(for me anyway) on some of the information on the Philemon Childers and the Abraham childers. There were too many of them!!!!
I guess you have been on the message boards and seen the Childress/Childers website?
Susan

Hi Susan,
The ancestors of Milner Childers who died 1741 Henrico VA seem to be Thomas Childers Sr. and second wife Mary Milner, daughter of John Milner and Mrs. Katherine Parker. Or, one researcher posted that another daughter Elizabeth Milner born c1680 also married a Childers (no details on her spouse). A John and Philemon (sons of Abraham married wives named Elizabeth, but I can't assume anything yet). Below are some findings, some from other researchers and some mine. Please let me know if you see any hints on clearing up Milner's lineage (the elder Philemon or Abraham). A younger Milner Childers born 1760 who moved to Wilkes NC by 1790 descends from this Henrico Childers-Milner connection.
Thanks,
Gary
Thomas Childers Sr. who married Mary Milner was a son of Philemon 1655-1698).
PHILEMON CHILDERS (ca. 1655-1698)of Henrico VA. Philemon married Mary, possibly Mary Howard, daughter or sister of John Howard. Or, she might have been a daughter of Griffin Evans. In his will 15 May 1681, he gave to "Mary Childers, daughter of Philemon," to "Philemon Childers, son of Philemon," and to Philemon, Sr.
Philemon Childers, Sen., made his will, which was proved 3 May 1717. The known children of Philemon and Mary Childers were:
Daughter, married ca. 1681/2 James Horton, Sr., and had one son James.
Thomas, married Ist Mary Holmes and 2nd Mary Milner.
Abraham, married Esther or Hester Pledge Cannon, widow of John Cannon.
Philemon, married Margaret __.
Mary, married Humphrey Smith, Sr. The only time Mary is named as Mary Smith is in her father's will.
THOMAS CHILDERS,(ca. 1671-1735 Henrico VA) married twice, first to Mary Holmes and second to Mary Milner. Mary Milner was the daughter of John Milner and Mrs. Katherine Parker (a widow). Katherine married a third time to James Babbicom for on 23 May 1692 James Babbicom made his will, proved 1 Dec. 1692, naming his stepchildren (calling them -in-laws) Elizabeth, Martha and Mary Milner and William Parker. His land adjoined Abraham Childers, Henry Sharp, William Parker and William Parker.
On 1 Jan. 1727/8 Thomas executed two deeds to sons Thomas (Jr.) and John for "good will and tender love," each receiving 75 acres. Witnesses to both deeds were Benjamin Childers, John Good, Jr., and Robert Bowman. Thomas Childers made his will on 15 Nov. 1734 and it was proved a year later on 3 Nov. 1735. He gave to sons Phelemon and James his remaining land, Philemon's trace being on the west side of the land of son Thomas, Jr., and the south side of Benjamin Childers' land near Amos Liptroop, running to the Spring Branch, and James' tract being the home plantation bounded by the Spring Branch, son Phelemon, son John, and Thomas Matthews. His wife Mary was to have the remainder of the estate. Witnesses were Thomas Matthews, Thomas Matthews, Jr., Henry Roe and Charles Woodson.42
Thomas Childers' children were:
Thomas born 1790s, married Elizabeth Hatcher.
John born c1795, married __.
Phillemon born?, marrled __'
James born?
