I am looking for info on James Childers from McNairy or Hardin County, TN. I know that he was married to a Susan Mcafee and they had two children John B. and Nancy. James was enlisted in the 7th TN Cavalry in 1863 and died during war in 1864 at Mobile, AL (he was captured by forrest I believe). He was either 33 or 35 when he enlisted. I'm trying to get together our family history for a gift to my dad and I can't get past James, I don't know where to find his parents names if anyone can help it would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi Judy,
The "BM" listed for NC marriages means "bondsman" rather than Baptist minister. If they were a minister, they are listed as MG (Minister of the Gospel).
Our David Wilkey who was listed as the BM or bondsman for the marriages of Willis and John Childers was not a minister. As mentioned in my earlier posting, the bondsman was usually related to the groom, either directly or by marriage.

Judy,
I agree that your Willis is likely Millner's son. Sometimes, circumstantial evidence can be sufficient. I'm also convinced that my David Wilkey's wife Catherine born c1795 was a Childers and a sister of your Willis. Other siblings were Wiley, Sarah and probably John Childers. There was an older Willis Childers in Wilkes NC (he obtained land in 1805) that may be a brother or cousin of Millner.
Among the supporting evidence for these theories --- the names Wiley and Willis began to appear in David and Catherine's descendants repeatedly for generations, and the names had to come from Catherine's side (suggesting Willis was her brother). David and Catherine moved to Hall GA when Millner moved c1838 and lived near a Wiley and Willis and Henry Childers. Also, my David Wilkey (misspelled Wilkins in some records) was bondsman for your Willis and for John Childers marriages and two other marriages (possibly related somehow) in Wilkes NC. Bondsman, I understand, were usually related to the groom.
Daniel Johnson - Fanny Pig, March 24, 1819 bondsman David Wilkey/Wilkins
Willis Childers – Salley (Sarah) Fields, Feb. 21, 1820 bondsman David Wilkey/Wilkins
George Higgins - Elizabeth Rhods (Rhodes), Aug. 31, 1821 bondsman David Wilkey/Wilkins
John Childers - Nancy Brooks, Jan. 1, 1822 bondsman David Wilkey/Wilkins

Aug 7, 1822 Gabriel Childers of Wilkes NC was wit for Millner Childers on Pension App saying he knew Millner to be a soldier sho served in the Revolution.
I also wanted to add another tidbit to contribute circumstantial evidence supporting my belief that Millner Childers was probably father to my Willis Childers, b. 1795....
My Great Grandmother Elisabeth D. Childers (1832 NC- 1902 Winston CO AL) lost her first husband AJ HUNTER about 1863 as he was killed in the War Between the States. When she married 2nd to Levi WATTS in Dec 1867 in Blount County, Alabama, Elisabeth brought her two HUNTER children into this second marriage. Elisabeth CHILDERS HUNTER WATTS's son John Lewis HUNTER told his grandchildren how the only father-figure he ever knew was Levi Watts . John Lewis named a son Millner HUNTER....and I think "Millner" is such an unusual given name, that he must have named a son to honor his ancestor.
Of course, I can't PROVE it!

I really don't have any thing additional to add on James Edmonston other than the tidbits of his WILL that I posted naming John Childers in sale of estate items.
BTW. You mentioned in your previous post Harbard Childers listed in the 1830 Wilkes County, NC census. I'm thinking this is probably another way of spelling "Herbert" .
I show "a" Herbert Childers married 1827 in Wilkes County, NC, as listed below.
There are at least three additional Herbert CHILDERS in my data bank--one is a great grandson to Willis Childers, Jr ., with Willis Jr. b. 1826 Wilkes CO NC, d. 1919 buried Childers Cem, Ogden Ridge, Morgan County, Alabama. This Willis, Jr is an older brother to my Great Grandma Elisabeth D. Childers buried Moreland, Winston CO AL.
The 2nd Herbert I list as being a son to a younger James Wiley Childers b. 1863 who settled in Spring Place, Georgia and this James Wiley Childers is son of John Asbury Childers. I'm pretty sure this John Asbury is related to "MY" Childers, probably a brother who didn't move with the clan into Alabama, though he named a son after James Wiley Childers (1822 NC- 1905 bur Ebenezer Cem. Oden, Morgan County, AL)...a brother to Willis, Jr. above and to my gr-grandma Elisabeth.
The 3rd Herbert Childers I have listed in 1850 Marengo Co, AL as being age 19, b. AL and probabaly the son of a Thomas B. Childers (by 1850 listed as deceased) and wife Maria A. of VA.
Research by Ben Bradford- Wedding entried in North Carolina, which may or may not have anything to do with our Willis, or even our Childers family, follow:
Wilkes County, North Carlina-
*Childers, James m. Milia Alexander. Rites by Willis Childers, Baptist Minister.
*John E., son of Willis and Carolina Childers, m. Phebe Darnall, d/o Wade & *Nancy Darnall, on Dec 22 1867, by W. F. Adams, Baptist Minister.
*Childers, Henry, to Elizabeth Johnson 23 Oct 1833 by Hamilton Childers, Baptist Minister.
*Childers, Herbert, to Nancy Gregory, 10 Oct 1827 by William Billings, Baptist Minister.
I f you will send me your snail mail, I will send you the part I copied from NARA of Milner Childers's Pension file. It was in SAD-SAD shape and some pages were too faded to photcopy. In this file, in 1838 Milner CHILDERS stated he thought their address was Hall County, Georgia though he explained they hadn't lay out the chains yet to determine the boundaries of the county lines. Explaining he moved there from Wilkes County, Georgia, asking to have his Revolutionary Pension changed to Hall County, Georgia. Revolutionary Soldier Milner Childers, age 77, is listed in the 1840 Hall Co GA Census living with "a" much younger James Childers (possibly grandson James Wiley Childers?)....living nearby is Willis Childers, Sr. b. 1795 VA. By 1850 Willis and wife Sarah had left the older children to be enumerated in Murray Co GA while he and Sarah slipped across the border into Cherokee CO NC and are enumerated there. By 1880, wife Sarah, age 73, widowed, was found living in M!
organ County, AL with her daughter Nancy who was the post master and one of few women in her time to owned land there in what became Winston Co AL.

Hi Judy,
Do you happen have additional info on James Edmonston? I have searched everything I know and can't find anything. I am assuming that the John Childers in this will is married to Hannah Edmonston. We know that this John had to be born before 1765 because he was at least 21 in 1785. He may be even older,,unfortunately with the name John there could be several genarations of John's and cousins in the County. But it would help to know how old James is on any Tax list. It may be helfpul to know the ages marraiges ect,.. of the Edmonston clan.
Who was Edwards father?

Whoever posted the message did so on the message board and is not
necessarily on the mailing list. They started this a while back - sending a
copy of all newly posted messages to the mailing list.
I gave someone a ton of information about her/my family and she didn't even
bother to say thank you or acknowledge my reply to her. About a month later
I figured it out - she never saw the message.

Hi Cass,
Thanks for the reply. Below are some Childers library findings from Wilkes Co NC (including an abstract of Willis Childers' will in 1897). There are some GA findings listed. I think Millner Childer's first name came from a maternal ancestor. I saw a family tree somewhere, but I'll have to find in my notes.
Let me know if you see anything of interest below.
