Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I can't believe you are carrying on this fashion. Evidently you haven't
been doing anything except griping about the whole process. You didn't read
the information correctly and are now arguing about a moot point. The
gentleman moving the stone is preserving all information, putting up new
stones with information is not degrading. Most of them don't even have
stones iv they do they are being used on the grave.....don't you realize how
many have disingrated to nothing. Try arguing on something that is
worthwhile other than someone trying to do a good deed.
A relative down the line.

To Al Medcalf from Gary Childress:
I wanted to contact you regarding a concern I have about one of the
headstones under your supervision, the headstone of a "D. M. Childust
34th Mississippi Regt."
My understanding is that the old headstone will be changed to reflect
new information found during research of the name. I wince at the
thought of your across-the-board policy of "correcting" errors. You may
indeed be correct in some of your research.....but I wince because you
may also be wrong...and any policy based on "correcting errors" will at
some point also be enshrining "new errors".
Your policy, I contend, should be to preserve the original wording and
then add the new interpretation and make it clear to the reader that
there is a difference, a new amendment being added, and that if at some
future time, new data is unearthed, future genealogists are still able
to make amendments and utilize the original data on the headstone. I
don't have a problem with adding new researched information if it is
clearly stated as such, AND IF NO INFORMATION IN THE OLD INSCRIPTION IS
PERMANTLY REMOVED AND DESTROYED FOR ETERNITY. If the old headstone
name reads "D. M. Childust, 34th Mississippi Regt"....the new headstone
name should read "D.M. Childust, 34th Mississippi Regt." Inscribed 1864
Believed to be Lt. David M. Childress, Co. I, 34th Miss Infantry
Inscribed 2004.
Please don't discard the old information. You must preserve the original
inscription. It is original source data. Historians would not copy any
historical document, change and update spellings and attributions, and
then destroy the original data. Your job should be sensitive enough to
recognize that new information can always come to light and that you can
not guarantee the accuracy of your corrections. Please, let all
historians judge the correctness of the changes by seeing the raw,
original data. Please preserve the original data.
Thank you

from Mr. Al Medcalf to Indiana Jack
Thank You so much Indiana Jack !! I just got back from meeting with Mayor
Bell (who happens to be Barnesville’s 1st black mayor). He says that he fully
supports our project, thinks we have done an excellent job and a service to the
community and can tell it and I quote”is a labor of love”. But, I figure
the more people that email him supporting us the better off we are.
Again Thank You very much,
Al
Thank you Sir, The two that sent me the snotty email are the only ones who
haven’t been appreciative and supportive. Patrick Childress, the man I
originally wrote, said those two aren’t even related to Lt. Childress
according to
DNA tests that have been done. I had written Patrick because I had read his
postings on Rootsweb about D. M. Childress and I realized that they didn’t
know
what had happened to him. I usually check all the soldiers on Rootsweb for
this reason. Most people want to know where their family members are and
that
their graves are being cared for. You, Partick and a Ms. Mary Smithey have
all
been very nice and supportive. I will install Lt. Childress’ new headstone
when I have the stones for the other soldiers in his row. I do them by rows
so
I can do a neater job. I enjoyed your site and really liked the research
hint
section. I do a lot of recruiting for the SCV and do some of the same things.
Again, Thank you,
Al Medcalf

I'm just as much a relative as they are and if the man needs a new
headstone do it. I thank you for your effort sir. Yes, the Childust is a

done the research on the Childers/Childress family in the Civil War and I
know you are correct and if the headstone needs replaced do it. With my

Hi All,
I'm sorry to send this a group email but I don't have much time and I
NEED your help.
Two brothers, Mark and Gary Childress are trying to stop the work we
are doing on the Confederate cemetery. I had notified a Childress
family member that we had Lt. D. M. Childress of the 34th Miss. buried
here and that his name is mispelled on his old headstone. They didn't
know what had happened to him or where he is buried. The man I notified
was thankful and supporting . They evidently have some sort of
Childress family email group and he put it on there. Mark and Gary went
ballistic and have called me everything but a "child of God". They say
that I am destroying the old records, which I am not as I explained to
them that we are moving the old stones down to be footstones with the
full inscriptions visible. All other members of the Childress family
have been gracious and supportive including a lady in Texas who is the
closest living relatine of Lt. Childress. According to Patrick
Childress who runs the Childress family website , the male members of
the Childress family have done DNA tests and Gary and Mark are not even
related to Lt. Childress !!!
Gary has now contacted the Mayor of Barnesville with an email that
really degrades me and the work we have been doing. I have to meet with
Mayor Bell at the cemetery sometime today. Gary is asking the Mayor
that we be made to remove all 47 of the new stones that we have
installed. Mr.Ogden and Cain that means I would have to remove
Pvt.Ogden's stone and Pvt. Griffin's stone.
I need a big favor from yall since you are relatives of the men buried
here. It will only take a few minutes. Please email Barnesville City
Hall at nsappington(a)mindspring.com
Put the email attention of Mayor Bell and City Manager Kenny Roberts .
Please explain that you are relatives of soldiers here and approve of
what we are doing.
If you would like to see emails from the Childress family in support
of our efforts please advise me and I will forward them to you. They
are at my work email address.
Mr. Norwood and Kathy, I have Sgt. Black and Pvt. Duckworth's stones
at my house and will get them installed when I have their complete row
if I am not stopped on this project.
Please help and Thank you.

Sir,
We are in the process of ordering new headstones and installing the
for the Confederate soldiers buried in Greenwood Cemetery (Confederate
section) in Barnesville,Ga. The old stones were hard to read and had
many mistakes on them. After reading your information on David
Childress and his father , I believe David Childress is buried here.
One old stone reads "D. M. Childust 34th Mississippi Regt. There is
no such soldier in the 34th Miss. There is a David M. Childress 2nd
Lt. Co. I 34th Miss.Infantry "Bowen Rebels" Marshall Co. Ms. He
enlisted at Chattanooga Tn. On Aug.1,1862, Promoted to Orderly Sgt. Oct.
1862, Promoted to 2nd Lt. July-Aug 1863, Jan-Feb 1864 sent to hospital
by Brigade Surgeon on Dec.1, 1863. Wounded on July 22, 1864 and sent to
hospital near Atlanta. Died we believe on Aug. 19, 1864.
Barnesville is about 60 miles South of Atlanta and sick and wounded
soldiers were brought to the area Confederate hospitals by train. I
have the new headstone for Lt. Childress in my yard and it will be
installed when we have received all the stones needed to complete the
row that he is buried in.
Thank you,
Al Medcalf

Mr. Medcalf is correct and the name is wrong. It appears once again to be
a case of "ya ain't got to be no english major to be a census clerk"
syndrome. What has happened it appears is that the original was drawn off a faulty
muster roll ( i.e. misspelled ) wrote by a company clerk that became such by
holding up his hand when a group of men were asked " Who all can 'reed and
'rite" All of my research, over the last 10 years on the subject of the
Childers/ Childress family in the Civil War backs Mr. Medcalf,. I commend his effort
and thank him for his thoughtfulness. There is no such "Childust" man in any
Mississppi Confederate unit , I have spend years doing Childers/ Childress
Civil War research. I believe that if anybody can claim to be an "expert" on the
subject, I can. I back Mr. Medcalf and give him my blessing. We should be
thankful to him and his respected organization on their efforts, rather than
threating and condemning him.
