Does anyone know anything about this Logan Childers? He was my
Great-granduncle and he lived around the Landrum - Spartanburg, SC area. A SUNDAY FIGHT
The usual Sunday amusements of North Carolina are sliding down on this
side of the line. Monday morning Sheriff Nicholls received a dispatch from
Landrum to go there with a posse to make arrests and that two FISHERS were
shot.
Dr. Landrum came down on the accommodation train and stated that Pet and Bob
GIBBES, white men, had abused and shot a young negro, Uriah GRAY, near
Collinsville. The case seemed to be a very aggravated one and trial justice
Lambright issued a warrant for the two men and sent for his constable, Jack
Fisher to
make the arrest. Fisher brought his brother Lee with him and at Landrum he
summoned Belton Landrum and another party to go with him. Reuben BALLEW, the
former constable, was dead and Fisher had been appointed in his place. When
they went to GIBBESs house Pet and Bob were hiding out, but Joe, Tom Jim and
the
old man and some visitors were on hand. It was nearly midnight. It must be
remembered that the GIBBES family and the FISHERS have a quarrel of long
standing. While talking in the house they got into a general fight. The two
FISHERS were severely cut and bruised on their heads. The old man and Joe
were
considerably punished. Dr. Landrum was sent for. He met Lee FISHER on the
road
and asked him to go and see Jack as he thought he was nearly dead. The
doctor
could not find him, but dressed the wounds of the GIBBS family. Jack FISHER
escaped and reached the house of Lafayette PRINCE and sent for Dr. Landrum.
He
found him with several severe and deep gashes on the head. It took him two
hours to dress the wounds. Lee FISHER was also severely wounded in the
head.
It was thought by Dr. Landrum, Monday that they would recover. Trial Justice
Lambright caused the arrest of A.W. GIBBES, the old man, and his sons Joe,
Jim
and Tom, and Logan CHILDERS and Arthur BURTON, Monday. They were sent down
to jail on the 5:30 train. The old man was released on a $500 bond. The
others will have a hearing this Tuesday afternoon.
