Does anyone have the wills for Robert CHILDERS 1731, Thomas CHIDERS in
1735 and/or William CHILDERS 1727 in Henrico county, VA? I'm seeking the
name of the husband of Jane WARE.
I can't afford $30 per will at the Library of VA and surely hope someone
can share this info with me!!
Thanks so much,
Kay in NC
Debrett's TEXAS Peerage lists those known to have been at the Alamo. They do however admit that all known lists are probably incomplete due to the circumstances of the Alamo being burned by the Mexicans.
I have seen the Childers name spelled various ways. My own mother thought hers was Childress, but I find them in all census and vital records as Childers.
NO early settlers in Texas by the name of Childers is listed in this book
George Campbell Childess was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence . The document was written in his own hand. He had been editor of the Nashville Banner and Nashville Advertiser. He settled in Texas in 1834 after the death of his wife Margaret S. Nance
He was a friend of President Andrew Jackson. He was born in Nashville in 1804 and committed suicide 1841.
Childress County, Texas is named for him.

Article titled: "A Man Drowned"
On Tuesday, the 24th ult., James Childers was drowned near A. V. P. Jones', in this county. Mr. Childers, with other neighbors, had been helping Mr. Jones to repair his mill race, and in the evening started off on his mule, and after being gone about twenty minutes his mule was noticed not far from where he started, and as Childers had been drinking some before he left, it was thought that he had fallen from his horse and could not again mount it; so Mr. Jones, as we learn, went to his assistance, but on approaching the creek, which was only a few hundred yards from Mr. Jones house, he found, to his astonishment, Childers lying in the creek, still astride his saddle, dead. Others were called and efforts were made to restore him to life, but to no effect. It is thought that when his mule tried to drink the saddle turned and Childers fell and was not able to recover until strangulation had extinguished the vital spark.

Note: Contrary to the article, Jones Mill was actually in Pickens Co. GA in the Jerusalem district. The article may have originally been written for
the "Pickens County Progress", but that will have to be verified, providing a copy for that newspaper and date exists.
Note: James' brother Jacob was married to a Nancy Jones, so James may have been an In-law of sorts to Mr. Jones
Note: This article clearly disproves one of the several family's version of the story, where an automobile was involved in James' drowning. However, there would still be
the possibility that a neighbor with the last name of "Carr" was at the event.

My personal opinion is that there are other ways of finding/learning
about living people.
Also, at this time when personal identity theft is a problem, it may
furnish information to those who do steal identities -- one of the
articles included a street address plus other family members names. If
you have ever had this to happen to you or a family member, you do
become more aware of all possibilities that can be used.
I had much rather read about those Childers/Childress/Chidres who are
no longer around -- they may be that lost connection to my line who are
still unknown to me.

Dottie,
My family were listed in the 1830 census as living in Campbell County,
Tennessee. In the 1840 and 1850 censuses, they were listed as living in
Claiborne County. Campbell and Claiborne are in eastern Tennessee on the
northern border.
Knox and Jefferson counties are south of Campbell and Claiborne,
separated by one line of counties.
Please look at the link below:

Click on the Notes for Curtis Childers.
If you believe there is a connection, I would really like to look at
your tree. Is it online?

Richard

While it can be time consuming to read through these, the articles may furnish leads
to family members. Assuming the Gainesville article is from Gainsville, Texas, the
"Molly E. Childers" may be a relative of mine! See:
http://home.houston.rr.com/ursa/childers/pafg02.htm#39
In order for the articles to be useful, the newspaper's name, city, and state must be
included.
I used the "Control/F" function of Windows to search the articles for "Childers" where
only a small part of the article was pertinent.

S.F. Man Killed by Police Officer
Santa Fe police officer responding to a domestic-dispute call Monday shot and
killed a man armed with a knife or a baseball bat, police said.
Officer Joe Nieto shot 52-year-old Dennis Childers twice after he "came at
the officer with a weapon" inside the Childers house, said State Police Lt.
Robert Shilling. Childers wielded either a baseball bat or a knife, the state
police lieutenant said, but he would not specify which.
Authorities declined to comment about the weapon or indicate where the
bullets hit Childers. Nieto has been with the department since August 2000.
Nieto and two other officers responded to an emergency call at 3011 Avenida
Cordoniz - off Cerrillos Road - around 1:15 p.m. The call had come from one
of the man's relatives, who had phoned police 35 minutes earlier. Police
would not indicate who the caller was.
The family member reported Childers was arguing with his brother or his
mother. A neighbor said the brother's name is Bobby and the mother's name is
Bridgette. However, names in a residential directory indicate Carolyn and
Freddie Childers live at the home.
Dennis Childers lived with his parents at the house, where his mother had
invited over his brother, police said.
After relatives opened the front door for officers, police said, Dennis
Childers came at Nieto with a weapon. Nieto "felt endangered" by Dennis
Childers and shot him in the hallway near the front door, said State Police
Criminal Agent Frank Jacoby.
The Office of the Medical Investigator in Albuquerque reported Dennis
Childers died at the residence. He might have been drinking before the
shooting, Jacoby said.
Authorities guided family members out of the house after the shooting. Police
have responded to other domestic calls at the home, Jacoby said.
Nieto, who was "extremely shaken" by the shooting, was taken to St. Vincent
Hospital for an evaluation after the incident, said Santa Fe Police Chief
Beverly Lennen. Officers Gina Sandoval and Steve Ortiz, who responded to the
call with Nieto, will go through a post-trauma debriefing, she said.
Nieto, 36, is on paid administrative leave pending a state police
investigation into the shooting, Lennen said.
"I always thought they were nice people," said Roy Rhodes, 72, a neighbor of
the family. At around 4 p.m. Monday, Rhodes had driven past the home, which
was blocked off with a yellow police line.
In front of the house were four older cars. Dennis Childers "liked to work on
a variety of those vehicles, get them running and sell them," said Ed
Quintana, a neighbor. "He always had a smile. He smiled for me, and he smiled
for my dog, Becky." Dennis Childers also worked for the state of New Mexico
at one time, Jacoby said.
The last time an officer with the Santa Fe Police Department was involved in
a shooting was in April 1998. Officer Robert Hollingsworth was dispatched to
The Enclave apartments to check on a man with a bat who had been seen
standing by a car with a broken window.
When Hollingsworth arrived at the apartment complex, the man fired at him.
Hollingsworth returned fire, hitting the man in the head and killing him. The
officer was shot in the right forearm and left thigh.
Polar bears’ water ski at annual lake event
<A HREF="mailto:news@havasunews.com">by SHARON DUNHAM</A>
The winter months have flown by in Lake Havasu City. Seems like only
yesterday that boats cruised the lake, towing water skiers behind, with
spectators in swimsuits watching from the beach and cheering them on.
Wait a minute. That was yesterday, and according to the calendar it’s still
winter. But, obviously, that doesn’t apply to Lake Havasu City.
On Saturday, about 60 people gathered on London Bridge Beach to either watch
the brave — some would call crazy — souls water ski, or get out on the water
themselves.
This is the 33rd year people have celebrated Lake Havasu Polar Bear Day, an
event organized by the Havasu Boat and Ski Club as a counterpart to the
swimming polar bear events in other areas of the country.
At 77 years old, Lyman Childers was probably the oldest person to take on
this challenge, and he did it on the spur of the moment. He’d come down to
the lake with his wife, Arlene, to watch the thrills and chills, and when he
saw a 70-year-old man go out, he thought he should do it, too.
He wasn’t dissuaded by the fact that that he was wearing blue jeans, and didn’
t have a swimsuit anywhere near. Sure, he could have gone back for one to the
Crazy Horse Campground, where he spends the winter as a snowbird from Ely,
Minn. But then he might lose his nerve.
So he got up on the skis and took a turn around the lake, coming back with
sopping wet, freezing cold jeans sticking to his legs. But the huge smile he
wore was warm and satisfied.
“It’s hard on the legs for an old buck like me,” he said. “I never had the
nerve to do this before. It must be my second childhood.”
Spooning down some hot soup after his ordeal, he said he wouldn’t tell his
children about the adventure. “They’d try to put me in a nursing home,” he
joked.
Lynn Tyree, 45, vacationing here from East Wenatchee, Wash., knows how that
rush feels from skiing in January water that reached only 51-degrees a couple
of feet from the shore. She, too, hadn’t planned to water ski Saturday, but
couldn’t resist once she felt the sand underfoot and the warm sun overhead.
But unlike Childers she took the time to go back to the campground for her
swimsuit, and then stood up on the skis on her first attempt, even though she
hadn’t skied for five years.
Excitement, fear build
Emotions run high as troops come off holiday leave and prepare to head for
the gulf in a mission that could turn into a war with Iraq. By BILL RAMS and

The Marine platoonmates returned from 15 days in Seattle with their families,
from Christmas and New Year's Eve, from the peaceful opening of presents and
the sipping of champagne.Lance Cpls. Phillip Camp, 20, and Brian Shouse, 21,
returned to Camp Pendleton on Friday to learn that they are probably leaving
again, this time for the Persian Gulf and the growing like li hood of
war.Like other Marines who returned this week from holiday leave, the "tank
snipers," both from Seattle, contemplated their role in what could be the
largest deployment of Camp Pendleton Marines since the Persian Gulf
War."We're very confident in our ability and the ability of our senior
Marines," Camp said. "I'm kind of excited to go - to get some experience."The
orders are in. More units of the 45,000-member U.S. 1st Marine Expeditionary
Force will head to the Persian Gulf, although nobody would say how many will
go. The news led one Marine to lecture his children on the realities of war,
brought a mother to tears and left two business operators worried about how a
mass deployment would affect the local economy.Preparing to depart In
interviews outside a San Clemente barber shop that specializes in the Marine
buzz cut, Marines from four different Camp Pendleton divisions said their
supervisors have told them in the past few days to prepare to leave."We're
hearing the end of January, early February," said artillery officer 1st Lt.
Frank Grecco, 26, of San Clemente. He and others believe the entire
45,000-member force will likely deploy to support a possible war with
Iraq. The news comes as the 2,200-member 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit at
Pendleton prepares for Monday's deployment aboard the Tarawa amphibious
assault ship. Amanda Graybill wept Friday as she thought about the departure
of her son, Cpl. Brandon Childers. She knew for weeks that his unit was to
leave in January. She had delayed the family Christmas celebration until this
weekend, the only time everyone could get together during the holiday
season."We put it off so we could be together, but now it looks like he won't
be around," Graybill said. "This has kind of dampened our spirits."Childers,
24, an electronics communications specialist, had planned to leave the
Marines in April when his four- year hitch ended, his mother said. But his
tour of duty will last at least six months."He wanted to go back to school,"
she said. "Now he's in God's hands."
