By tradition my Childers (Childress) family came from Rockingham Co. Va.
to Lewis Co. Va. (now WV) befpre 1850, when William Childers shows in
the census records. He was married to a Martha Ferrell of Albemarle Co.
Va.
One family member gave me the tradition that his parents were William
Childers and Susannah Golf and he had a brother Thomas. I have no idea
if this is correct or not.
I did find that William Childers was born 26 Aug 1819 and married in
Albemarle Co 16 Jan 1841 to Martha Ferrell. There are some middle names
of their children that sound like last names that might be a clue to
their ancestors. They used Patterson, Williamson, Lewis, Lee, Ashley and
Lovington.
Any help in attaching William to his forebears would be great
appreciated.

Today as I was in my garden, I seen that the my peach trees were blooming.
Although the thought of fresh home grow peaches crossed my mind, I could not
but think of the peach orchard at Shiloh when the gun fire made the blossoms
"fall like snow."
Shiloh was 140 years ago this last week, many of our Childers/Childress
fought in this battle. I've comprised a list of the men that more than likely
were there. I cannot say it's 100% correct, if one wants to check on an
ancestor that might have been there, we can track that down a little tighter.

If only these men could speak!
>From the the cemetery records of Brown Twn., Washington County, Indiana:"The
only known Confederate veteran buried in the township was Paton F. Childress,
buried at Mount Carmel. He was probably related to the Childers family of
Brown Township and is buried next to William Childers, a soldier for the
union. Childress (the name is spelled Childers in Union records)enlisted for
one year at Nashville, Tennesse on July 8, 1861 in Company H, 26th Regiment
Tennesse Infantry. On July 2, 1862 he reenlisted for the duration of the war
in Captain Bradshaws Independant Company of Rangers at Ringgold, Georgia. By
order of General Bragg, he was transfered to Company I 1st, Confederate
Regiment on December 1, 1862. Promoted to Corporal Feburary 20, 1864, he was
captured near Atlanta, Georgia July 20, 1864. Sometime later, he was sent to
the militery prison (*first to Louisville, Ky. my note--jack) Camp Douglass,
Illinois where, on March 25 1865, he took the oath of allegiance to the
United States and enlisted Company E, U.S. Volunteers. At this time, he
claimed he had always been a loyal citizen, and enlisted in the rebel army
only to avoid conscription, and that he did not desire to return south to be
exchanged. He died in 1885.

I know the title had everybody wondering what was going on. Just a hint on
what to do with an old refrigerator. It's a great place to store all those
important files and photos. We took all our photos, important records,
genealogy files and put them in archive boxes for storage in a junk
refrigerator on the back porch locked up. I know the refrigerator sounds
crazy but, they are more fireproof than the fireproof boxes you can buy. An
old fridge will go through any house fire and still protect the contents.
Their bigger and they keep every thing dry and with a good hasp and padlock
they'll even stand up to a tornado with out opening.
