Hi Barbara,
That was quick!! You must be as frustrated as I am (LOL). I will take the
time to read and digest your info a little later, but I do have a note on the
1850 Polk County census that John Childers 26 NC turned up on the 1870
Rutherford County NC census, Green Hill twp. This may or may not be the John
you are looking for, but it will have the children's names. One side of my
family (paternal) moved around between Polk/Rutherford/Henderson, NC and
Spartanburg County SC. My maternal side of the family moved around between
Henderson/Transylvania NC and Pickens/Greenville SC. So, if you look at the
map you can see I cover those NC/SC borders pretty well. Polk County is my
brick wall for my ggrandfather, Samuel Pack b1799. At least I am assuming he
was born and not dropped off a space ship! I am in touch with a couple of
people that do research in this area, and I will ask around. Where was your
grandmother raised by her Uncle Logan Childers? in NC or SC? I have found
most of my information on children in wills. If Louisa preceded her father in
death, then he may have provided for her child. This is how I made a
breakthrough in my Pack family. Good luck, and yes, I agree we should stay in
touch.
Regards,
Patricia

I don't have any further information. But, I am trying to find a John & Betti
Childers in the same areas. I found him for sure in the 1880 census in the
Campobello area of Spartanburg (just over the hill from Polk County). I then
found a wedding license for my Great-grandmother Louisa Childers (John's
daughter) in Polk County - White Oak area for March 10, 1874. They must have
then moved to SC. My Great-grandfather James Gibbs then died in the
Rutherford County area on 15 Oct 1884. The mystery for our family is what
happened to Louisa Childers Gibbs? Her daughter my Grandmother Annie Lee
Gibbs was raised by her Uncle Logan Childers. We should stay in touch. Our
families might be related. Barbara Channell Census Place:

Looking for information on MARGARET CHILDERS b abt 1855. She was listed on
the 1860 Polk County NC census as follows:
William Childers 26 NC
Margaret 21 NC
MARGARET 3 NC
Sarah J. 2 NC
On the 1850 Polk County NC census William's family was listed as follows:
Robert Childers 52 Laborer GA
Tempe 50 NC
John 26 NC
David 23 NC
WILLIAM 19 NC
Tench (m) 14 NC
Rebecca 9 NC
Martha 6 NC
I have reason to believe that MARGARET was my great grandmother, Margaret
Matilda Childers Thomas. She married Alfred Lewis Thomas Feb .21, 1872 in
Transylvania County, NC. After his death in abt 1883-1885 she moved to
Henderson County with her three sons and two daughters. In trying to
establish why she left Transylvania County and all the Thomas connections and
went to Henderson County, I found in the 1870 Henderson County census that
her father's brother, Tench Childers, had established his family there.
Apparently the rest of the family stayed in the Polk/Rutherford NC area.
I am trying to definitely establish that this MARGARET in Polk County is my
great grandmother. Any information on this family will be greatly
appreciated.
I must give grateful credit to Wade Motsinger who answered my query on Rowan
Roots web site for this census information.
