Dear Listmates,
The following is with regards to one of the most touching events in
the history of the Childress families who settled in Eastern Tennessee.
Five years ago I walked for the first time onto the grounds of the
cemetery adjoining Mt. Harmony Baptist Church off Raccoon Valley Rd in
North Knox County. The largest and most imposing monument is located at
the lower end of a long row of Childress graves. It must be 3 x 3 feet
at the base rising to a height of about 10 feet. On each of the 4
sides of the monument there is listed a name of a member of a single
Childress family. There was P.C , W.L., John C. and James C.
Childress. The date of the loss of the individuals was all on the same
date and I left wondering what disaster has befallen this family.
As I learned more about my line of Childress, descending from John
Childress b 1759 who was a young solider in the War of American
Independence, and especially as I learned of the naming patterns. I
realized these names on the monument must have been part of this same
family line. The first name of Peter, James, John, and William, not
unlike other Childress families, were very common, but the second name
of Lindsay and Carter was a tip off of being a probable part of the John
Childress family line. I strongly suspect that that is what we have
here.
The 1900 census of Anderson County I found this family listed as
following: Peter C. Childress b 9/1853 in TN, wife Lizia b Aug. 1866,
married 18 years, son William L. 3/1884, son James C 6/1886, son John C.
8/1889, Charlie 3/1890, Hattie J. 7/1892, Albert 7/1895, Jesse 12/1896,
and Laura E 11/1898. Peter C. was listed as a coal miner and the first
four of the names matched the names on the large monument in the
cemetery. They all died the same day May 19, 1902.
The death of a family group such as this would be big news except
that is was part of a total of 184 souls who lost their life in a mining
accident known as The Fraterville Mine Explosion. From a story by Jesse
Fox Mayshark reprinted in the Metro Pulse of Knoxville Tennessee,.
"Jacob Vowell was lying in the damp darkness, straining to breathe. His
brother Elbert was next to him. All around them were other men and
boys, most of the dead. Jacob and Elbert would die soon too, and they
knew it. By the light of an oil lamp that was competing with his own
lungs for what little oxygen was left, Jacob wrote a letter to his wife
and children.
'Ellen, darling, goodbye for us both, Elbert said the Lord has saved
him. Do the best you can with the children. We are all praying for air
to support us, but it is getting so bad without any air. Horace, Elbert
said for you to wear his shoes and clothing. It is now 1/2 past 1.
Powell Harmons's watch is in Andy Woods hand.
Ellen, I want you to live right and come to heaven. Raise the
children as best you can.
Oh how I wish to be with you. Good Bye all of you, goodbye. Bury me
and Elbert in the same grave by little Eddy. Goodbye Ellen. Goodbye
Lily. Goodbye Jimmy. Goodbye Horace. Is 25 minutes after Two. There is
a few of us alive yet. Oh God for one more breath. Ellen remember me
for as long as you live. Goodbye darling.' "
Others wrote notes that were found beside their bodies, still others
may have been the lucky ones and died in the explosions. This may have
been the case with the Childress family as I saw no indication of a
letter being left behind by any of them. It must have been quite a
shock to the Childress clan as this large monument was placed as a
tribute to the love and respect they must have had for their family
member. They died in was is to this day the worst mining disaster in the
history of Tennessee and the 8th worst in the nation.
I have been attempting to discover who this Peter Carter Childress
was. He was born in 1853 and I have found a few candidates, but nothing
for sure. If one of my cousin want to chime in and give me a clue it
would be appreciated.
Jay Childress
