Subject: Re: Childers!!
Hi to all --
I have no 100% proof that Joshua was born in Ms. or ARK. More of the
census' say MS. I do not know anything about his parents or siblings.
Family "rumor mill says MS" and that he mustered out of MS. but he ended up
in NC at the end of the war and married so fast.
I've started looking in other states now. Dora Lee Childers (dres) one of
his children - was my
GG Grandma. She told my Mother (when she was 9 yrs. old) that they crossed
the Mississippi River on a big barge. They went to stay with family for a
time and then come back to NC for good.
I could use all the help I can get. I believe that he was
born in MS. His child - Fannie Childers married someone from ARK.
Wilkerson. So I may
have ARK and or MS connections. They may have been real close to the ARK/MS
line. I just don't know.

I just have this gut feeling that Jane and Joshua knew each other long
before they married. The Sellers have several families that moved back and
forth across the south
--this is just a guess but maybe some of the
Sellers and the Childers knew each other before the Civil War. Their were
several Sellers in NC and Ga. and Al. area. Maybe they -- Jane's family
decided to stay after the war or they moved between 1840-1844. I did not
see either
this family of Sellers or a Childers until the 1850 census. in the Johnston
County area of NC.
My reason for saying this is Joshua married Jane Anne Sellers almost as
soon as the war ended (Johnston Co., NC).
All of Jane's siblings and family are found on the 1850,1860, and Joshua
with his new family is present in al the census up to 1920... and Mom lived
with them as a baby in the 1930 census.
note about Jane Sellers whom Joshua Married:
I have been looking at the Sellers going back and forth from state to state.
I am looking for Alsey Sellers (Jane's Father) , I do not know where he was
born. The date from census is about 1824-25. I do not know who his mother,
father, or siblings are. I can't seem to
find any NC connections before 1840 for either Jane's mother or father or
Joshua. Please pass the word to your friends.
I have already contacted the Sellers List several times without any success.
I am including the Sellers info incase you have run into Alsey Sellers kin.
Sincerely, Charlene Nix

FROM___ (Official Records, Series I, Vol XXVII. pt. 2. pp. 666-667):
General Lane reported the assault as follows--Now in command of my own
brigade, I moved forward to the support of Pettigrew's right, through the
woods in which our batteries were planted, and through an open field about a
mile in full view of the enemy's fortified position, and under a murderous
artillery. and infantry fire.
As soon as Pettigrew's command gave back, [W. L. J.] Lowrance's brigade and
my own, without ever having halted, took position on the left of the troops
which were still contesting the ground with the enemy. My command never moved
forward more handsomely. The men reserved their fire, in accordance with
orders, until within good range of the enemy, and then opened with telling
effect, repeatedly driving the cannoneers from their pieces, completely
silencing the guns in our immediate front, and breaking the line of infantry
which was formed on the crest of the hill. We advanced to within a few yards
of the stone wall, exposed all the while to a heavy, raking artillery fire
from the right. My left was here very much exposed. and a column of the
enemy's infantry was thrown forward in that direction, which enfiladed my
whole line. This forced me to withdraw my brigade, the troops on my right
having already done so. We fell back as well as could be expected, reformed
immediately in rear of the artillery, as directed by General Trimble, and
remained there until the following morning.
Following the failure of the Pickett-Pettigrew Charge on July 3, Lee held his
army in position to receive an expected attack. On the night of July 4 the
army began its retreat, and Pender's division, once more under the command of
Lane after Trimble was wounded and captured on July 3, fell back toward
Hagerstown by way of Fairfield.

Do any of our fine southern ladies belong to the UDC and would have
access to the graves registration books of Confederate veterans. Also, could
you possibly copy some of the pages for me of the Childers/Childress men's
burial sites that I could use to create a web site, to honor these men as
well as providing a reference site to help others to find their lost
ancestors. I believe that this was a state by state project. That and I
don't belive they let a yankee like me to have access to material of this
nature.

AN INTERESTING FIND!!!!
>From the the cemetery records of Brown Twn., Washington County, Indiana:
"The only known Confederate veteran buried in the township was Paton F.
Childress, buried at Mount Carmel. He was probably related to the Childers
family of Brown Township and is buried next to William Childers, a soldier
for the union. Childress (the name is spelled Childers in Union records)
enlisted for one year at Nashville, Tennesse on July 8, 1861 in Company H,
26th Regiment Tennesse Infantry. On July 2, 1862 he reenlisted for the
duration of the war in Captain Bradshaws Independant Company of Rangers at
Ringgold, Georgia. By order of General Bragg, he was transfered to Company I
1st, Confederate Regiment on December 1, 1862. Promoted to Corporal Feburary
20, 1864, he was captured near Atlanta, Georgia July 20, 1864.
Sometime later, he was sent to the militery prison (*first to Louisville,
Ky. my note--jack) Camp Douglass, Illinois where, on March 25 1865, he took
the oath of allegiance to the United States and enlisted Company E, U.S.
Volunteers. At this time, he claimed he had always been a loyal citizen, and
enlisted in the rebel army only to avoid conscription, and that he did not
desire to return south to be exchanged. He died in 1885.
*I have a photo of his military grave marker and copies of his military
prison records, along with a copy of his oath of allegiance with his
signature. for anyone who wants it!--jack
I'd be happy to help if you need any picture taken around Manassas, VA.

Major changes upcoming, in my website more men, more notes and
information, along with regimental histories. AND I hope to get a new address
for my site that works a bit better! This will be coming along in the next
month or so. Once more I will try to help with civil war questions and
"problems". I would like some help as well, if any one has any information
or letters, pictures, family stories etc., etc., send it along my way. A new
feature that I would like to work on is a virtual memorial with photos of
grave stones or other memorial sites with our family surname. However!!! I
can't travel everywhere in the nation! (golly I sur wish I could!!!)
I'm going to need some help from ALL MY COUSINS! If any one is out and
about this summer and could take a snap shot near their home or on vacation,
get in touch with me. I'll point or try to point you towards a cemetery or
