Does anyone know if there is a connection between Goolsby CHILDERS, c1803
VA-1872 Carter Co., KY who m. Nancy MCCLANAHAN, b c1814 VA (they were
listed in the 1870 Carter Co., KY census) and Goolsby/Goolsbury
CHILDERS/CHILDRESS (1757 Amherst, VA-25 May 1842) Garrard Co., KY & m. Nancy
SWEENEY?
The name Goolsby came from the maiden name of Goolsby CHILDERS/CHILDRESS'
(1757-1842) mother Susanna GOOLSBY.
Info on Goolsby CHILDERS & Nancy MCCLANAHAN has been printed in the last 2
issues of the Childers-Childress Clearinghouse Newsletter. I wrote to the
submitter of the info, but she does not know the connection between the two
Goolsby's, if any.
The info in the newsletter states Nancy McClanahan Childers died 1890 in
Boyd Co. Infirmary (listed as a pauper).
Does anyone know if there is a connection between these 2 Goolsby's? The
name Nancy McClanahan sounds very familiar to me but I have nothing on her
or her husband in my database.

from "the heroes of the battle of kings mountain, a history of the battle of

Of the Wilkes and Surry men, under Cleveland and Winston, we have only the
names of two men killed--Thomas Bicknell, and Daniel Siske, of Wilkes County;
Major Lewis, Captains Lewis, Smith, and Lenoir, Lieutenants Johnson and J. M.
Smith, Charles Gordon, and John Childers wounded--the latter badly. Where so
many officers were disabled, there must have been several others of this
gallant regiment killed and wounded.
Trying to locate any info on TOM THOMPSON married to RACHEAL CHILDERS, from
Blacksburg area. To date I have been unable to locate my Tom on any SC.
Census or land records. They had 4 children born 1888-1897, names were Watt
Austin, Raymond Heywood, James Rolland and Grace. The only thing I can
think of is I have the name incorrect. Maybe Tom was a nickname.
If you have a Racheal Childers connected to ANY Thompson would you please
contact me.
Thanks So Much,

Hi Ann Phillips!
Welcome to the CHILDERS list. My wife's dad is William Leonard
CHILDERS. His dad was William Chesley CHILDERS and his mother
was Dovie Mae PHILLIPS.
William Chesley's parents were John William CHILDERS and Ruby Aves
JONES. So, in two generations, we pick up three of the surnames
you are looking for and all in Alabama. (I noticed in your
subscription request you were also subscribing to JONES and the
ALABAMA lists among a number of others).
John William's parents were John Thomas CHILDERS and Mary Elizabeth
unknown (Cherokee Indian). John Thomas was a trail boss on the
Trail of Tears. He met her on one of his excursions moving the
Cherokees from GA/AL to OK.
Dovie Mae PHILLIPS' parents were John Lewis PHILLIPS, Jr. and
Minnie Mae MURPHY (widow of PILGREEN). John Lewis' parents were
John Lewis PHILLIPS, Sr. & Emily unknown. Both were born in SC,
but married in Anniston, AL.
Ruby Aves JONES' parents were James L. JONES and Delilah (Diblah?)
Clementine unknown. Both were born in GA and died in AL. James'
parents were John J. JONES and an unknown woman, both of which
were also born in GA.
Let me know if you have any connections here.

Hello All CHILDERS/CHILDRESS researchers,
I AM SO HAPPY! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
A DOOR TO MY ANCESTORS WAS OPENED BY A VERY NICE LADY, YESTERDAY! ! ! ! !
I had gone into the mailing list archives and had entered an ancestor's name
that I was fairly sure of, on the request line and looked back at postings of
1998.
I opened a couple, and read them, but no connection that I could find.
Then, I came across a posting dated 31 Aug 1998 and even though the ancestor
she was looking for was not familiar to me, she had listed his descendants. I
scrolled down the list, not really expecting to find any connection, when all
of a sudden I saw the name I was looking for. I scrolled the rest and then
went back to the list, where I had seen my possible connection.
My Samuel G. CHILDERS b. 1813 and m. Elizabeth Ann SMITH, who I believed to be
my paternal g. grandfather, was shown as a grandson of Robert Childress Sr.
I wrote privately to the subscriber, not knowing if she was still
online or doing research since her posting was so old, as well as sent a copy
by snail mail, * to cover my bases.*
Then she responded. She had my Samuel, and she had my grandfather also
shown, with his brothers and sisters, children of Samuel and Elizabeth. She
confirmed what I had been told about the burial location of Samuel, and stated
that he is buried in an unmarked gravesite.
She also stated that she was in contact with an even closer kinfolk that
had known my grandfather and his brothers. (One of whom changed the spelling
of the name to CHILDRES. That is the information he gave on his older
brother's death certificate - my grandfather.) She gave this cousin my name
and address, which was allright to do so, and promises to write me.
Boy, do I have my work cut out for me now. But, that is OKAY by me.
Now to write my elderly aunt about my findings. She is in a nursing home
in Waynesboro, Ms. She is my dad's oldest sister.
Old postings do work! I had been against a brick wall with this one for a
long, long time. Unable to locate name or connection.
Just wanted to share this good news! ! ! ! I am related to even more now!

Jack,
How exciting for you to finally find your half-brother after all these
years!!! This makes all the years of searching worthwhile, and gives us all
hope of finding living family members, as well as pieces of our family
history. Thanks for sharing this good news with us! We share your joy with

Subj: Albert B.(Bee?) Childers

From: burdge(a)w-link.net (Burdge)
To: EUSDA05(a)Aol.com
I am seeking information on the subject, Albert B. Childers, on
behalf of my coworker, Peggy Sword, who does not have web access. We
are located in western Washington, near Seattle.
Peggy is the daughter of Albert. She knows almost nothing about him and
would like to learn more. Her parents divorced when she was an infant
and she has no recollection of him. This much is known:
Albert B. Childers
SSN 562-24-2828
D.O.B. 12/22/26
D.O.D. 7/1/69 (apparently murdered then thrown in front of a moving
train)
Buried at Lovelock, Nevada
Served in the military, beginning somewhere around 1943
In both Navy & Marine Corp. Thought to have served 2 hitches in the
Navy but not necessarily consecutive hitches.
May have been born in California.
Had twin brothers or half brothers, one of whom was apparently also
murdered.
I know nothing about researching a personal history or genealogy on
the web. I could use some suggestions. If you have any ideas that
could point me in the right direction, they will be gratefully received.
Thank's for your consideration.

First off, the most important question: "When?"
If someone was in the Revolutionary War, there is a good chance that he will
be listed in several large books on the subject. Other wars become a little
more difficult. For instance, AFAIK, there is no single source that lists
all Union soldiers in the Civil War (ACW). However, there is one set of
microfilm from the National Archives that lists all KNOWN Confederate
soldiers. There are CD-ROMs that list all soldiers who died in Korean and
Vietnam Wars but I don't know of any website that has a list of everyone who
ever served in the military. Most of these records are in paper or microform
and there are privacy issues.

Forty-one years ago I was told I had a half-brother. I never knew much about
him due to a conpiracy on the part of my family. They didn't think it a
worthy situation for supper talk and clammed up on me about whenever I asked
about him. All I could ever find out about him was his mother's name. But I
kept searching for 41 years.
Today I talked with him over the telephone !!!!! Well, we talked and cried,
mostly cried but we got said what we wanted to. I am on top of the world.
I owe a big debt of appreciation to Minniesoda, the web=page mistress for the
BlackSheep List, who helped me ever so much. It was she who actually found my
brother.
The best I can say is to never give up in your searches. It can pay off big
time !!!

Hi Gang,
I just learned from a very wise person names Ceya some neat tricks in
searching and she asked that it be passed on, so here goes.

When searching Bureau of Land Management
Once you get your ancestor's (or the one you think is your ancestor) land
description, go back to the start and erase all christian names and
surnames and have all the blanks empty except the land description. Enter
the entire land description in the blanks and then wait...........Surprise!
You can see all the neighborhood for that piece of land!
When you do a telephone search on the Internet and just put in someone's
street name and city and town--don't put in any kind of name, you can see
who all the neighbors are that have a "listed" phone. My son has just
moved to Duluth, Georgia and I decided to see who lived in his
neighborhood--in case I ever needed to call anyone and low and behold, I
got the whole neighborhood. Some people aren't listed because they have
"unlisted" telephone numbers.
