Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901,
reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society.
W. H. CHILDERS. There are few better known men in Grant county than
"Billy" Childers, as he is called. He is a native of Grant county and
"to the manner born." He is a son of Wesley Childers and Lucy Childers,
and was born in Grant county near Dry Ridge April 22d 1840. In his father's
family there were three children, one boy and two girls, all of whom are
dead but W. H. Childers. When only a lad his father died and left him an
orphan. He was raised in Williamstown by Squire Lucas, attended the common
schools. He began life for himself as a clerk in Lucas' store. While
serving in the store as a clerk he was elected a constable of the district
and served for seven years. Later in life he served as Deputy Sheriff for
six years under E. K. Green and Ezra D. Webster.
At the breaking out of the Civil War, Mr. Childers joined his forces
to the "Lost Cause." He enlisted in Company G, Fifth Kentucky Volunteer
Cavalry, and was elected third lieutenant in Captain Coombs' company.
He and his company took a prominent part in the battle of Lebanon Junction
and Green River, and he was in many other engagements of minor importance.
For two years his company was part of John Morgan's cavalry, and was
captured with the command at Buffington's Island on September 1863. He
was taken as a prisoner to Camp Douglas and there kept in close
confinement for twenty-two months, when he was exchanged and returned to
his home in Kentucky. The war over, he returned to Williamstown and took
up his life where he had left off, as clerk in the store.
In politics he has been a Democrat all of his life, and has served
his party long and well. He has never asked for office though often
solicited to do so.
He married Miss Louisa Simon, daughter of Francis Simon, shortly
after the close of the war, and to their union five children have been
born, two boys and three girls, all of whom are now living. They are:
Mrs. Lutie Alcoke, wife of E. J. Alcoke, of Corinth; Mrs. Etta Fletcher,
wife of Robert V. Fletcher, a prominent young lawyer at Pontotoc, Miss.;
Frank W. Childers, bookkeeper for the Mining Gazette Company at Houghton,
Mich.; Willie Childers, on the farm with his father, and Miss Mabel,
now ten years old.
Mr. Childers and his wife are each members of the Christian Church.
They own between them over 500 acres of the best hill land in Grant county,
much of which is in timber, in which the woodman's axe has yet made no
impression. Mr. Childers is a large farmer and stock raiser. He
cultivates and grows to perfection all of the staple cereals of this
latitude. Stock raising is his "long suit." His fine herd of Black Angus
cattle are farmed far and near. He has given all of his children a good
education, and started them in life and is a deserving, excellent citizen.

I am looking for John Childress born abt 1790 in Laurens County, SC He
married Sarah (Sallie) Massey, daughter to Nathan Massey and Sarah Work.

Rutherford County, TN.

Sorry, folks,
When I changed the subject line, I also obliterated what denomination the
church was. It was a Baptist congregation in Barren County, Kentucky.
Sara Tarpley
>From the South Central Kentucky list:
Peters Creek was formed in 1830 with Fleming C CHILDRESS the first pastor -
his name often spelled CHILDERS. He was followed by W G W GILLOCK and later
by Wm. K. MORGAN.
Thought this might be of interest to someone.

J. Samuel Childers
J. SAMUEL CHILDERS, wholesale and retail dealer in groceries, was born in
Pulaski, Tenn., April 28, 1846, son of J. B. and Susan (Ezell) Childers, and
is of Scotch-Irish and English descent. The parents were natives of Virginia
and Tennessee, respectively. The former was born August 29, 1815, and the
latter was born October 1825, and died in Giles County in 1865. The Childers
family immigrated to Tennessee in 1819, and settled in Giles County. They
have for many years been one of the leading families of this county. Our
subject, one of the prominent businessmen of this city, is the eldest of five
living children. He was educated at Giles College in Pulaski, and in 1864
enlisted in Company K, First Tennessee Cavalry, and remained in the
Confederate service until the close of the war. In 1865 he engaged in the
merchandise business in Pulaski, and in 1868 he was joined In marriage to
Miss Ada Pullen, of Giles County. This union was blessed by the birth of one
child, Ben. From 1869 to 1874 Mr. Childers was in the dry goods business at
Wales Station, this county, but in the latter year he returned to Pulaski,
where he continued the dry goods business for two years, and then for four
years was connected with a cotton factory. In 1874 he began the grocery
business in this city, and has since continued that occupation. Mr. Childers
is an enterprising man and a Democrat in politics. He is a Knight Templar,
Pulaski Commandery, No. 12, and he and wife are members of the Methodist
Episcopal Church South.

interesting quote found by my son
Take a step forward, lads. It will be easier that way.
Executed by firing squad.
~~ Erskine Childers, Irish patriot, d. November 24, 1922
I could not pass this up without sharing with my kin and fellow researchers.
from TUPELO by REV. JOHN H. AUGHEY, A.M.,
This is the account of what happened to I believe was
P . F. CHILDRESS of the 26th inf. 1st co. i , Tenn. CSA
About 3 o'clock in the afternoon, I approached two prisoners who were heavily
ironed. They were handcuffed, had bands and chains upon their ankles, similar
to mine, and were also chained together and to a bolt in the floor. I
inquired for what offence they were incarcerated. The prisoner whom I
addressed was a tall gentleman with a very intellectual expression of
countenance and of prepossessing manners. He was pale and sad.
Page 176
"We are charged with desertion."
"Did you desert?"
"I enlisted in the Confederate service for twelve months. At the expiration
of my term of service I asked permission to return home, stating that I had
learned from a trustworthy source that my family were suffering from a lack
of the necessaries of life; that they lived in Tennessee, which is occupied
by Federal troops. Confederate money there has no purchasing power, not being
worth the paper on which it is printed; that I desired to relieve my family
from their distress, and as my term of service had expired, I demanded my
discharge. This they refused, stating that the Confederate congress had
passed a law requiring all soldiers who had enlisted for any term, however
short, to be held to service during the war, and that all who left before its
close would be considered guilty of desertion, and if arrested would be shot.
Regarding the law as a tyrannical enactment, and of no binding force, I
attempted to return to my family, but was arrested and committed to this
prison."
"What will be your fate?"
"I don't know, but fear the worst. At our trial Gen. Bragg said some salutary
examples must be made to deter soldiers from deserting, or the army would
waste away as snow before the bright beams of the vernal sun. His bile and
bitterness overflowed in acrimonious invectives."
The other prisoner's statement was a perfect counterpart of his comrade's.
Page 177
The first was named Melville Baillie, of Raleigh, Tennessee, and the other
Polk Childress, of Hickory Wythe, Tenn. Their friend, Parley Van Horn, of
Colliersville, Tenn., they left sick at the home of his cousin, Felix Grundy
Ayres, in Byhalia, Miss., who thus escaped. I left them and walked to the
opposite side of the prison, when I observed a file of soldiers drawn up in
front of the prison. Two officers entered, and walking up to the prisoners
with whom I had just been conversing, unfastened their chains, and ordered
them to follow. As the officers passed Capt. Bruce, he asked, "What are you
going to do with these men?" "Going to shoot them," was the reply. They then
showed him the warrant for their execution, having written across it in red
letters, "condemned to death." When the prisoners reached the door, the file
of soldiers separated, received the prisoners into the space in their midst,
marched them across the railroad, and shot them.
Thus was perpetrated an act of cruel tyranny that cries loudly to heaven for
vengeance. Two families, helpless and destitute, were thus each deprived of
its head, upon whom they were dependent for support, and abandoned to the
cold charity of a selfish world. The wages earned by a year's service in
behalf of the wicked, cruel, and vindictive Confederate states, was an
ignominious death and a dishonored grave. The widow and the fatherless cry to
heaven for vengeance, and their cries have entered into the ears of the Lord
Of Sabaoth.
A couple of stories, only have 1/4 of page, but figured it is my turn to give
something to ya'll. This person is related to my Chiders line, we have to
live with all the skeletons... Msongy

IRATE HUSBAND KILLS WIFE-
Mendenhall, Miss., April 9-
Enraged by his wife's taunts that she had been out having a good time with
some other man, Homer Childress, 35, logger, murdered her with an ax as she
lay sleeping, and then attempted suicide by slashing his throat at their
home, 13 miles west of here, at an early hour Saturday morning.
Childress will recover, according to physicians, who have attended him here
in the county jail, where he sits, not remorseful for slaying his mate, but
remorseful because he failed in his attempt at suicide. He surrendered to
officers after he lost his nerve and could not finish his self destruction.
According to Childress, his wife came home last night, and when he asked her
where she had been, she told him, "That she had been out having a good time
with another man." He says that he had known that his wife was frequently
going out with other men, and that they had quarreled many times about the
matter. The usual quarrel followed her return last night, and after she had
gone to sleep he crushed her skull with an ax. Her body was found lying in
the bed. Childress says that after killing his wife, he thought of killing
himself, and he then slashed his throat with his razor. When his first slash
was not deep enough to be fatal he lost his nerve and could not complete the
job. He called to neighbors and told them what he had done and waited for
the officers.
Childress and his wife were living at the Southern Lumber Company logging
camp near Pinola.
NOTE: This was my great uncle, brother of my mother's mother, Alice Mildred
Childers. He was most angry because his children had been left alone at home
with nothing to eat, (according to my mother).
Homer was sentenced to life in prison, and his two/three children were taken
in by his dead wife's sister who lived in California. Several years later,
the sister murdered her husband, and the children appealed to the MS prison
system to pardon their father, which they did. The children and father moved
to LA and lived with another relative.

WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON CLUB -
The Wednesday Afternoon Club met last week with Mrs. George Berry. The home
was beautifully decorated with pink roses and ferns. All members of the club
were present except one. Mrs. O. C. LUPER, Mrs. B. H. POLK, Misses ANNA EVA
POLK and MARY LENA WILLIAMS were visitors. A very interesting program was
carried out. The hostess served an ice and salad course. The meeting this
week will be held with Mrs. CLYDE SMITH.

COUNTY AGENT RESIGNS -
CLYDE SMITH, county farm agent of Jefferson Davis County, resigns his work in
this county May 1, to accept a similar position in Covington County. Mr.
Smith hesitated considerably in leaving our county which has backed his work
to a unit, but the Covington board of supervisors made a very attractive
offer and Mr. Smith has decided to accept. He has been on this job for eight
years in our county and has accomplished phenomenal work during that time.
His organization of the Farm Bureau and work in cotton marketing association,
and club work among the boys are outstanding. His work during these eight
years has carried him into all sections of the county, and he is as well
known over the entire county as anybody, and not only the citizens of
Prentiss, but of the entire county regret very much to lose him and his wife
from our midst.

MISSISSIPPI BREVITIES -
CRAVE CANDY -
Sweet toothed McComb youngsters looking expectantly to their papas for
necessary nickels, were overjoyed last week to learn that a candy factory had
opened in their town. Already demand has exceeded the new plant's production
limit.
NICE JAILBIRD -
Irked at the idea of sitting idle and waxing fat on prison fare, while he
finished a liquor sentence, JAMES MANSFIELD is painting the Yazoo County jail
and court house. Proud Yazooans proclaim him the state's most profitable
prisoner.
U.S. SLAP STICKS-
Ticks that suck themselves tight on blood of Mississippi cows will henceforth
be given no chance to change their diet to cow blood of other states. After
May 1 the federal government will prohibit interstate shipment of ticky cows,
even for immediate slaughter.
STILL ON MAP -
Men of Laurel shook their heads vigorously to make sure they were alive last
week when into their city form over the South poured inquires asking if they
were "still there." In Mobile, New Orleans, Houston, reports circulated that
Laurel had been annihilated by a cyclone.
OFFICIAL SOP -
On the floor of a Negro cabin in Laurel last week knelt Officer C. W.
VALENTINE, dishcloth in hand, sopping up whiskey. Raided, the cabin's
occupant had broken bottles containing... (sorry, cut off here).
I've enclosed a listing of Childers/Childress men I've found listed as have

Subject: Re: [PACE-L] Pace Lineage, need some help, Please...
To: MSongy7777(a)aol.com
Dear Marguerite,
I must have been smart as a brick. When I first got started 20 years ago I
didn't keep good records of my documentation so I'm having to retrace my
steps. I have in my records that William M PACE and Zebedee F PACE 1810
Ala were sons of John and Abagail PACE both born abt 1784 in North Carolina.
Most of my research on the Paces has been looking at Marion, Clarke and Wayne
co, Mississippi census records and Jean Stricklands "Who Married Whom in
Marion Co Mississippi",and "Who married Whom in Wayne Co. Mississippi." I
also don't know how to respond to the Pace-L list. Computer illiterate I
guess. If you find any more I'd like to hear from you. Happy digging!!!
Bonnie
Not sure how Bonnie is related to the Pace's, she doesn't give that info,
guess I will write and ask her. M

After taking Vicksburg, Grant did not have the ability to transfer or feed
all of the confederate prisoners, so they were paroled. Being paroled was an
honor system that the men would return home and not fight again until
exchanged on paper for Union men.
