John Childress b 1735 VA d. 1811 TN M 1st Elizabeth Armstrong 2nd
Nancy Hickman. Trying to trace his son William. Is he the William in
1790 Census Stokes Co NC second hous from Mary Childress and John
Farmer. Could this be the William Childress b 1760/70 in Madison Co
Al mid 1800s to 1830 or so ? Would like to exchange info on this
family. Fran Aaron YVWK47A(a)prodigy.com
The family story was that Thomas Cameron CHILDRESS, b. 12 Jan
1869/1872/1876, Alabama, m. Antonio Belle HOCK, 1 Jan 1890, d. 24 Nov 1947,
Valley Mills, Bosque Co., Texas was an orphan who ran way to be a horse
jockey. Recent contact with another branch of the family told more of the
story. About 1880, Thomas and his parents were on the way west. Near Fort
Griffin, Texas, the mother died in childbirth. The father turned back to
live with relatives in Milam County, Texas. The relatives were Dr.
William TREADWELL and his wife Cynthia. Sometime later, Thomas father died
suddenly of a heart attack. Dr. Treadwell had promised Thomas a horse when
he turned twelve years old, but reneged on the promise. Thomas ran away
from home.
Dr. William TREADWELL registered as a physician in Milam County, Texas in
1878 on the authority the Medical College of Georgia. The Treadwells were
in Benton, AL in 1850; Cherokee, AL in 1860; St. Clare, AL in 1870; and
Milam, TX in 1880. In 1870, next door in St.Clare, AL was R.D. TREADWELL,
with a 22 year old single man living in the household named TALOR CHILDRESS.
Was Dr. TREADWELL Thomas grandfather? Was TALOR CHILDRESS his father? Or
was Cynthia TREADWELL a CHILDRESS and Talor her brother?
Any CHILDRESS / TREADWELL connections?

Class Designations for Settlers of the Republic
During the period of the Republic of Texas, the Texas government
granted over 50 million acres of public land to attract new settlers.
The amount of land and the conditions of the grants were based
primarily on the settler's "class", which was determined by their date
arrival in Texas (see chart below). Refer to our section on Texas Land
Records for a more detailed discussion of Texas land grants and the
process for obtaining them.
Qualifying Amount of Land Granted
Class Date of Arrival Families Singles Privileges(1)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
1 Before 2 Mar 1836 1 league 1/3 league Unconditional
+ 1 labor
2 2 Mar 1836 thru 1280 acres 640 acres Conditional
1 Oct 1837
2M(2) 2 Mar 1836 thru 1 league 1/3 league Unconditional
1 Aug 1836 + 1 labor
3 1 Oct 1837 thru 640 acres 320 acres Conditional
1 Jan 1840(3)
4 1 Jan 1840 thru 640 acres 320 acres Conditional(3)
1 Jan 1842(3)
Notes:
(1) Unconditional grantees could sell or transfer their rights
immediately; conditional grantees were required to establish
residency in Texas for three years before an unconditional
certificate was issued.
(2) Not an official designation; generally referred to as Class 2;
reserved for volunteers for military service; the date of arrival
requirements fell within that of Class 2 but the grantee received
the amount of land and privileges of Class 1.
(3) In addition to the conditions imposed for classes 2 and 3, the
class 4 grantee was required to cultivate 10 acres of the land on
which he settled.

Distance and Area Measurements
Used in Early Texas Land Transactions
Land measurements used in early Texas were based on the Spanish system
of the period. They were keyed to two primary units of distance: a vara
and a league. Conversions to the more familiar measures that we know
today are shown below. The graphics depict the relations among the
various units of distance and area.
Distance (Linear) Measurements
1 Vara = approximately 33-1/3 inches = 0.93 yards
1 League = 5000 varas = approximately 2.6 miles
Vara Mile League

Area Measurements
1 Labor (lah-bor') = 1,000,000 square varas
= 177.1 acres
1 League = 1 square linear league
= 6.8 square miles
= 25 labors
= 4428 acres
1 Square Mile = 0.145 leagues
= approximately 3.6 labors
= 640 acres

The sitio, another term sometimes used to describe land area in colonial
Texas, was somewhat more loosely defined. Roughly translated from
Spanish, the term meant space or parcel. In early Texas, the term
referred to the amount of land required for ranching horses, mules and
cattle. It was often used to designate the equivalent of one league of
land.
Occasionally, in documents recorded later in the Republic, early State-
hood, and beyond, the researcher may run across the more modern term
"section" to apply to land area. A section is 15 square miles, or a
little more than two leagues.

Hello,
I am searching for information on Stephen Childress who died 1811 in
Montgomery Co, VA. His wife's name was Elizabeth but I do not know her
maiden name. Their daughter Elizabeth married Lt. Robert Elliott in 1793
Montgomery Co and another child was named Boling Childress. Does anyone
know if Boling was a maiden name of a mother or something like that? I
know there was a cluster of Childers/Childress in Henrico Co, Va in the
early 1700s, along with some Bolings.
If anyone has info on Stephen's parents or his wife Elizabeth's family, I
would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Mary

Ed,
Several years ago I wrote to the Pike County Historical Society concerning
the Childers family. At
that time, I did not know beyond Nathaniel. A very nice lady, Dorcas M.
Hobbs, wrote me back
stating that Nathaniel was a son of Fleming, the son of Pleasant. She
enclosed copies of compiled
Childers information, including marriage records, which state that
Nathaniel was the son of Flemon, and
that Serena was the daughter of Boyd Taylor. She enclosed a copy of
"Appalachian Notebook"
article on Pleasant Childers. This was written by Henry P. Scalf. Another
article included was
"Revolutionary War Service" and was copied from the Pike County Court
Order Book B. Page 374.
October 1839. This tells about Sarah Jeffries Childress applying for
pension. Ms. Hobbs also sent
a copy of a group family sheet by Carrol Ward of Anandale, VA. This is
just Pleasant and Sarah and
their children. I have never contacted Carrol Ward. This person used the
following as referances:
"Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky" by Kozee
She states "My evaluation on marriage, and my direct line"
#6 Adv. of David McClanahan
I had forgot I had all of this until I saw your request. I knew there was
some documented place I had
used for the Nathaniel/Flemon(Fleming)/Pleasant connection.
This is something else I plan to scan in when I can. Or, if you would
rather, I will snail mail copies of
this to you if you will send me the address. Getting to my scanning seems
to not be progressing very quickly.
Patricia Christian
Can anyone on the list provide me with any documented evidence that
supports the relationship between Nathaniel and Flemon (Fleming)
Childers. All information I have at this time points toward Fleming as
the father of Nathaniel. However, I can't verify it at this time. I have
found Nathaniel (68) with his wife Salenia Taylor (63) in the 1900
Tazewell County, VA census with George and Solinna, his children, as
well as some of his grandchildren, but a connection to his parents has
eluded me. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks so very much to everyone who responded to my question about
Fleming (Flemmon) Childers, Childresses. I have a good start on
finding how each one fits into the families. I just keep thinking that
at some time "my Fleming" will be discovered somewhere in the family
connections! Again, I appreciate everyone's thoughtfulness. Marilyn
