Has anyone heard of the name Childent? My 3rd greatgrandmother was Elizabeth
(another one) married to Ezekiel Staggs. She was in Pontotoc Co., MS in the
1850 census, age 57, born in S.C. Ezekiel's 2nd wife, in her claim for a
widow's pension, gave Ezekiel's 1st wife's name as Elizabeth Childen or
Childent.

Ohio
IWR = Ironton Weekly Republican
Note: The old newspapers gave a list almost weekly of the names for whom
marriage licenses were issued. These could have been issued the prior week
or the prior month - I have found both instances. These were issued in
Lawrence county, Ohio. You did not have to be a resident of Lawrence county
to be married here. Also, you will find the ones that were "married" as just
having advertised that fact in this paper and may have been from Ripley,
Ohio, Scioto county, or other areas along with Lawrence county couples. When
stated as issued - that is all the paper gives. When it says married, please
look up the source, also wedding - these give more details of where they
were from.

Sorry no connection that I can find, although my Grand Father was born in
north west Arkansas and he married Nancy Jane Tencher from parts unknown. His
name was George Washington Childress, my great Grand Father's name was John W.
Childress and he had a sister named Nancy born in 1859 some where in Missouri.
John W. Childress and Nancy were children of Major L. Childress.

Petition to Form Russell County - December 1785
The petition of sundry inhabitants of Clinch River, Moccasin Creek,
Powells Valley, and others, citizens of Washington County humbly
represent that your petitioners are situated from the line of Montgomery
as it crosses near the source of the Clinch River, down the same eight
miles; thence to the extreme settlements of Powells Valley forty
more.
The greatest portion of your petitioners have to travel from twenty five
miles and some eighty or an hundred; moreover are generally interrupted
by Clinch Mountain and the north branch of the Holstein River; the
former affording very difficult passes; the latter much danger and
difficulty in crossing it in spring and after considerable rains;
continuous to its southern bank, a chain of hills almost as difficult as
Clinch Mountain; so that great difficulty arises to your Petitioners not
only in attending Courts, but Courts Martial. And from the extent of
schism between our small settlements make it exceedingly difficult to
arrange companies without subjecting some to travel 15 and 20 miles to
private mustery. There are two difficulties in the militia law that
principally affect your Petitioners. There are evils small indeed to
the feelings we constantly undergo when obliged to leave our helpless
families exposed at so very greast distances to obey the laws of our
country. And however evident the danger may appear to us will not
certainly on our failure of duty plead our excuse. Circumstance alone
is sufficient to claim the human respect of the Legislature to remove
the grievance. We therefore pray your Honorable House will take our
case into consideration and divide the county. We further pray a line
may be fixed along Clinch Mountain to the Carolina line; or with the
line at present dividing the county into two regiments to the aforesaid
Carolina line; then with the said line to Cumberland Mountain including
taht existing county between Cumberland Mountain and Montgomery line and
Clinch Mountain, or the aforesaid regimental line for the new county and
southeast of the said Clinch Mountain remain Washington County; and we
your Petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.

Rock Springs Cemetery
Contributed by Don Condra
Rock Springs Primitive Baptist Church and cemetery are located in
Southeast Township (Sec. 11, T.1S,R1E). This is approximately 1 1/2 miles
east of Valeene, Indiana. The church was constituted in 1826 in Stampers
Creek Township at the home of Charles Vandeveer. A house for worship was
built in 1841 at the described location at a cost of $500. First members
of the church were: John, Joel, Aaron, Charles, and George Vandeveer with
their wives; _____ Phillips and wife, Abraham Pierson and wife, Cole
Pierson, Nancy Pierson, William Pierson, John Pierson, Abraham Noblitt,
Woodson Noblitt, Amelia Noblitt, and William Noblitt. The first minister
was Aaron Vandever and since him have been Charles Vandeveer, Jonathan
Jones, William Robertson, T. N. Robertson, and Samuel McMahan(this up to
about 1880). Elder T. N. Robertson held an interesting revival in 1876,
and succeeded in gaining about a dozen converts to the church. The
cemetery has several old and unmarked graves. Nearly all those buried
here are inter-related. Most of the inscriptions here were copied by
unknown parties in 1946. Some updating has occurred, however, more needs
to be done to bring it up to the current date (1996).

This information came through a book titled "Barren County Kentucky Cemetery
Records." Take 1297 Old Bowling Green road west from the by-pass .9 mile.
Turn left and follow a lane .2 to the first house on the left. The cemetery
is located behind this house on a bank overlooking the Cumberland Parkway.

Hello all- I was wondering if any of you had knowledge of the following
Childress family :
1850 Jackson Co, Alabama census.
Family No. 66
CHILDRESS, JOEL age 52, born TN
NANCY 45, born VA
JOHN 18, born AL (actually
living nextdoor with James Clark)
LORRY ( Laura) 14, born AL (married John M Burgess in Jackson
Co )
Sarah 12, born AL
NANCY (Ann) 10, born AL (married V.E.Scott in Jackson Co
)
JOSEPH 6, born AL
CALDONIA 3, born AL (married ??Shook )
Joel and Nancy Childress sold their land in Jackson Co, AL and moved West . I
am descended from Laura Childress and John M Burgess. They were married Dec
31, 1857 in Jackson Co.Laura came to TX in 1874 according to her confederate
pension application. I know that John M Burgess and Laura Childress Burgess
lived in AR for a period of time as their children were born there, and he
died there during the Civil War in Ft Smith AR. They also at some point lived
with Laura's sister Nancy Childress Jones in Wood Co TX . Her grandson Charlie
Edward Burgess (my grandfather ) was born in Wood Co. on April 22, 1893. Any
help you might be able to give would be greatly appreciated !!

Hello fellow researchers, genealogists and family historians!
I'm searching for information about Henry D. Childs, an 1850's resident of

Searching for information on William Childers.
Known: William Childers born 1797/8 in TN or possibly NC
resided in Hamilton Co. TN in 1850 and 1860.
Married Esther Bennett, probably in TN.
Children (most of whom migrated to southern Illinois)

William may have had a brother Matthew born ca 1803 in Knox Co. TN.
Any help greatly appreciated, I have such a headache from banging it against
that brick wall

Searching for help or even hunches, about Lavina (or Donia*) CHILDS who
married Hezekiah (or Hesikiah) Nichols. Lavina would have been born no
earlier than 1815, possibly in Connecticut.
Lavina was also the mother of the following children:
Philura Nichols 1830-1920 Orange Co., NY (or VT?) > Tuscola Co., MI, m.
Isaac B. Smith 1850 in Chester Twp., Geauga Co., Ohio
Carlos Nichols 1827-1902 Cornish Cr., VT > Allegan Co., MI, m. Malvina
Unknown
Susan Nichols 1825-1912 Cornish Cr., VT > Allegan Co., MI, m. Volney
Hilbert
(Orville Nichols 1817-1901 Chester, VT > Geauga Co., OH * "Donia? CHILDS"
is listed as Orville's mother, could it actually be Lavina?
There are probably others that I am not aware of.
Since Lavina's husband, Hezekiah died in Geauga Co., OH in 1853, it's
possible that Lavina made it that far west (?).
Thanks!

Everyone,
The file gets garbled when I send it even though it was composed in
Netscape Navigator. Sorry. I re-arranged things a little and resent to
make it easier to follow. It contains the first and/or middle names of
the Childers, the year they were born, the name of their spouse and in
two cases the place of the Childers birth.
